When a server isn't afraid to recommend a cheaper dish because the chefs "haven't quite perfected" my initial request, you really can't go wrong. The bf & I stopped by there on a busy Saturday. Found seats at the bar which the hostess kindly secured for us, otherwise it would have been an hr wait for a table. The bartender there was the sweetest, although I can't recall her name but I wish I did. Blonde, pretty, & very attentive. Food was good. We had an artichoke & goat cheese flagbread pizza which was perfect, loaded with lots of cheese & veggie goodness. The Thai beef salad however was very undercooked. Ordered med rare, came out less then rare. Hate to send a dish back but when we did it came back the steak was still barely cooked. I can eat that way & the whole salad was really yummy. Hunger might be the best sauce, but after my unfortunate experience at a nearby eatery.. I was just grateful that the kitchen was open and the beer on tap was decent. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised by both the quality and the taste of the food, as well as the friendliness of the bartenders. The bartenders were great, cheerful and making sure everyone was quickly taken care of... the atmosphere was interesting with the exposed brick and outdoors area. But the real star of the show was the food. The seafood chowder was everything I remember a New England chowdah to be... I used to live in Boston, so I've had more than my share. The bits of fish, clam, oyster, etc were plentiful, the broth savory and the potatoes scarce. While good, the chicken and waffles do not surpass the chowder. That said, the waffles were fluffy and the chicken crisp and we'll seasoned. The sweet syrup contrasted nicely with the savory chicken.. and the butter (something that many places forget or ignore) was a good touch. Healthy? No way. Delicious? Yes! Decent beer selection with ok food. I came here super hungry and had one of their UFO blonde beers on tap. For appetizers, we had the nachos, which used potato chips instead of nacho chips. Super unhealthy but not bad at all. I didn't feel guilty. We also had the baked brie which was not bad. I expected the burger to be amazing. It came with bacon and a fried egg. It was also huge, a big plus. But when I bit into the burger, it was just tasteless. Thank goodness for ketchup, I had to keep putting ketchup on my burger so that it would at least have some taste. I went to Granary Tavern for drinks and dinner last Thursday night, and it was an all-around negative experience. I'd give the service 1 star and the food 3 stars, hence the 2 star rating. To start with the service, our waitress was brusque, rude, and largely absent. She had purple hair, so if you're seated in her section, I would recommend moving. She didn't introduce herself, gave us hardly any time to look at the menu, and disappeared for 15+ minutes when we weren't ready to order 30 seconds after sitting down. It wasn't that busy, either. The night became irretrievable when our beers arrived. My friend had ordered a Sam Adams Octoberfest, which I do not like. I ordered a Lagunitas IPA. When our beers arrived, it was obvious that we were both given Octoberfests. After tasting it and comparing it to my friend's beer (definitely Octoberfest), I politely asked the waitress if she was sure my beer was Lagunitas IPA. Her response was "Yes, that's right." No offer to double check. No offer to get me something I actually liked. No offer to take it off the bill. No offer to grab a manager. I've never experienced anything like that in a restaurant, and honestly, I was pretty upset about it. I know the difference between Octoberfest and Lagunitas, and I just couldn't believe she denied it and didn't offer to do anything to fix the situation when I was clearly unhappy. Now on to the food. We ordered the pumpkin ale fondue. Neither of us tasted any pumpkin flavor. It was also bland, so we barely touched it. I don't think I need to tell you that our waitress didn't bother asking if we enjoyed it, regardless of the fact that we hardly ate any. My friend got the oyster po boy, which she reported as "eh." I got the Farmers Market salad, which was supposed to include "seasonal vegetables" and "farmhouse cheese." It was lettuce, a few green beans, topped with a sprinkling of feta cheese. Huh? The waitress reappeared at the end of the night to drop off the check. She never asked if we wanted another round. Never asked if we were interested in a dessert menu. It was like she decided that she was going to give us her bare minimum and stuck with that theme for the whole night. At the end of the evening, my friend and I both felt like we overpaid for mediocre food and very disappointing service. Needless to say, I will never be returning to Granary Tavern, even though my company is soon moving to a building nearby. Don't put your Thursday night at risk; there are plenty of other great restaurants with friendly service and impressive beer lists that deserve your money. read more

Went here with my parents while they were in town. I ordered the Salmon BLAT sandwich. My mom ordered the beet salad, and my dad ordered the fish and chips. I normally don't order sandwiches because most the time, the quality ordered at a restaurant can be achieved at home (are quite simple). So I am critical about sandwiches. Needless to say, it was a delicious quality sandwich, in which all aspects fell together beautifully. It was on a multigrain bread perfectly toasted and buttered. Salmon was cooked well, and it all paired great with bacon, avocado and tomatoe. I really appreciated the decor of the restaurant, as well. So I actually live next door to this place and it has quickly become one of my favorite hangouts. The decor is amazing. They took a lot of care to restore a lot of the old feel of the building with a lot of exposed brick and steel and a lot of cool restored items. The service is pretty good and friendly and the food is great! My favorite is the granary burger which has bacon and an egg (only during lunch). From other reviews, I went to the GT with eyes wide open about the potential for bad service but the reality was worse than expected. All of the employees, from the hostess to bartender to waiter/waitress, were completely uninterested in anything resembling 'customer service' and they seemed personally miserable. Inside is warm and comfy with exposed bricks and wood beams. I ordered the Granary burger medium rare. And like so many places in the world it was cooked to a medium well. There was no salt, pepper, ketchup or mustard brought or offered. Only a small cup of ketchup to accommodate my absolutely salt less fries. The meat was good in the burger but again, it was over cooked. It came with lettuce tomato and onion. Red onions, so they were useless. Those shouldn't be used on a burger. The quality of lettuce was poor, white slab of iceberg. Some fresh greens, GREENS, would be nice. I was so excited for the fried egg on top. But, just like my burger it was over cooked. Sigh, why even have it if your going to over cook it? This place has potential to be great. Get a few better chefs that pay more attention to detail. Besides a patio along the Greenway, this place doesn't have much going for them. Their menu has nothing out of the ordinary -- I ordered the Beet Salad with dressing on the side, and of course the server comes back with a mountain of greens, sopping wet with dressing. UGH. The beets were good, but the salad was almost ruined by how much dressing was on it. My boyfriend got the Fish n' Chips, and didn't think it was anything special. I celebrated my birthday here last night and it was fabulous! I had the hardest time deciding on what to order because everything sounded so great and at a great price too! My party ended up ordering 4 appetizers (couldn't pick just one!) and I ordered chicken and waffles for my entre. IT WAS THE BEST CHICKEN AND WAFFLES I'VE EVER HAD! And I grew up in the south! I also had an Angry Pumpkin cocktail - it was delicious! And the creme brulee was amazing! I can't wait to go back again and try more! Our server was perfect as well! Just okay. Nothing super special but not terrible. If you are a vegetarian beware only two options on the menu. I didn't want either option-I asked if I could have a grilled cheese and fries. The woman who was our waitress said "no that's on the children's menu for under 10". Typically when that happens or the restaurant is super strict on their menu they will offer to charge me for something more expensive and give me a "souped" up grilled cheese with like tomato or something. Nope, nothing. So I went online to their website and placed an order for a grilled cheese which I was able to do without any weird age restrictions. I mean seriously, it was a huge grilled cheese- not something a kid could eat and who really cares if I'm an adult, just sell it to me and upcharge me. The table next to us was sharing a meal. How is that any different. So in the end I ordered my meal online and got it. Sadly the waitress missed out on the added tip for my meal and the restaurant left a bad impression on me. Strange to see restaurants nowadays without many options for vegetarians-either make some more options available or let me order off the kids menu. It's not killing anyone. Oh what? I haven't reviewed Granary Tavern? I am the worst. I really enjoy this place. Every person I've interacted with on the waitstaff has been an absolute delight. This includes me coming in there randomly with a group of 15 people, me coming in slightly (okay, a lot) intoxicated at 11 and demanding food, and everything in between. They are very quick to check on you, see if you need another drink/more food, and are just super helpful with the menu. I've had a ton of things off of the menu, but mostly from the snacks/appetizers/flatbread section. All of the entrees look great, but I'm that person that enjoys trying a bunch of little things, which is why I tend to stay away from the entrees. I can't think of anything that I've tried that I have not enjoyed there. Some of the big hits for me are: the brussels sprouts chips (brussels sprouts leaves separated, flash fried, and tossed with garlic and delicious), the garlic chips and dip (house made potato chips, liberally scattered with thinly sliced garlic, tossed with garlic infused oil, and served with a dipping sauce), and the bbq pork "nachos" (the house made chips topped with pulled pork, garlic aioli, and some other stuff that I don't see because I'm too busy stuffing it into my face). The drinks are really well made, as well. I am in LOVE with the Tavern Sling, which should be a surprise to no one since it's Hendricks + elderflower, which is basically my kryptonite. They also have a good selection of beer, although their wine list feels a bit limited. The prices are on point with what you'd expect from the area. I just ate what was probably the Saddest Turkey Sandwich In The World. It was so dry and unadorned that I could have poured my beer on it and the plank it was served on wouldn't have seen a drop. (Sidenote: What happened to good ol' fashioned plates? Charcuterie or cheese? Fine. Sandwich with fries and condiment vessels? Plate.) The bread was stale (or just bad -- hard to tell), and the only accompaniments were some lettuce and a couple slices of tomato. When you pay $12 for a turkey sandwich, you expect at least expertly prepared, juicy turkey. I used the supplied mini-pot of mustard to give it some life, but a gallon wouldn't have been enough. Decent beer selection, but nothing to write home about, and the service was fine at the bar. One shriveled, desiccated star for the sandwich, and a pity star for opening jitters and nice atmosphere. I had mentioned it to the waitress Aliza G but she never offered to replace it. Then, my grandson threw up and not one of the servers came over to offer to help. Okay, so we moved to a table closer to the bar since the bar was occupied before we were sharply reprimanded and told ALL tables are for waiter based serving. Having dined here on both a gorgeous, warm summer day on the patio and a freezing, blustery winter day in the warm, cozy and inviting dining room - I would definitely say this is as good as it gets as far as lunch in the area. On both occasions my group received attentive and friendly service (during a lunch rush that meant a packed restaurant) and the food was fantastic. I have only had lunch here (I always seem to forget about this place), but will definitely try drinks after work. The clam chowder is rich, smoky (mmm bacon..) and lick your bowl delicious, the flat breads are fantastic (crust is awesome), the sandwiches are huge and filling and I am also a huge fan of the fish tacos (Friday's special). It was presented nicely and overall I was alright with the meal. The bun was excellent and the fish cooked well enough. Despite the mango salsa, it still lacked a little flavor.
