Shocked by the bad reviews! This place is my guilty pleasure. I have been here at least a dozen times. Their pastries are delicious, they have the best coffee cake I have literally ever had. Used to visit the NE location so when I was driving through Cedar Mills, I stopped in to get some bread and a pastry. Both were as good as I remember. I didn't try any of their sandwiches or menu items so can't comment on them. Was there during lunch hour and it was crowded so expect to wait in line if you go during prime time. otherwise go early or mid afternoon, but recognize they may be out if items if you go later in the day. read more

My husband and I regularly go to Grand Central Bakery because we like the freshly baked loaves of bread. We usually get the Sourdough (5 stars) and Sourdough Potato (5 stars). They have a crusty exterior with a soft interior that's perfect for sandwiches or as is. We also like the Goldendale Whole Wheat (5 stars). When I want something sweet, I usually get the Chocolate Chip Cookie (5 stars). The cookie has that nostalgic homemade flavor and texture that is simply satisfying. I also like the Blueberry Muffin (4 stars), Chocolate Croissant (4 stars), and Blueberry Scone (4 stars). I once tried the Sausage Egg Biscuit (3 stars). Went here for breakfast/brunch. There was a little bit of a line which went out the door but it moved fairly quick. Once inside, pastry orders first then register for the rest. I got a BLT since #itsback. That sandwich was amazing my goodness. Big ol stack of lettuce, juicy tomato's, plenty of bacon. Mayo was great, bread was amazing. Very solid spot. I've been here so many times and always look forward to my next visit. The staff are always so friendly, and the pastries are AMAZING. We've never had a bad pastry here - all have been flavorful, fresh, have perfect texture (flaky/soft/smooth, etc), and SO delicious. Our family favorites are the pecan pull apart and the cheese danish. The bread options are also wonderful! My favorite loaf is the sour rye, which is really affordable (~$5.50) and makes awesome sandwiches or toast. HIGHLY recommend coming here! read more

I had to make time for this review because this place has the best customer service ever. It was like being at Disneyland. That is how nice each person was. I must have encountered 4 service people. Each one as nice as the next. I enjoyed them, They were kind, helpful, sweet. I mean this is the model example of how great they made me feel just picking up an order to go. Abby was as nice on the phone as in person. This is a happy place and those people are making it happen. I have had such opposite experiences at other Bakeries in town ...like Hillsdale. Awesome. I was really craving for some good sourdough and tried this place on a weekend. Got my hands on the sourdough bread along with coffee and a plain biscuit. Not sure why this bakery has less than 4 stars. One of the best cinnamon buns I've had! The staff was friendly. The bread and sugar and coffee smells automatically take away all your worries when you walk in the doors. The vibes are warm and chill. I got the traditional cinnamon bun 9/10 and a sourdough loaf sliced to-go. Very excited to come back and try all the additional pastries and maybe splurge on a specialty coffee. The only thing is parking is a bit tricky as it's a small lot with designated spots for neighboring businesses. Just a couple loops around the lot and I snagged a spot. Hopeful to return soon. It is a great place to get some bakery items and freshly made food. I had a craving for a grilled cheese sandwich and also a turkey deluxe sandwich. I was pretty hungry during this visit. I liked that the lines go by pretty quickly, and you also get your food fast. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. Came to grab breakfast with a friend and it was such a treat! The staff were so hip and friendly. My biscuit breakfast sandwich was tasty. My friend and I both got a seasonal mint mocha which was a bit pricey but homey and fun. I also brought two danishes home with me that were delicious. In terms of ambiance, the store was definitely very busy, even on Christmas Eve. The parking lot is a nightmare so beware if you drive a larger car. read more

Not a nice staff. I have tried on multiple occasions to get good service here hoping it was just a certain day or time. Unfortunately, it never seems to get better. I will not go back and neither will my friends and family. The odd thing is I can't shake the feeling that it's my sis white male presentation because it always seems like the women next to me in line get significantly better treatment. They walk up to the counter and get asked what they want right away but then come up and I watch as multiple staff members mull about and ignore me, only taking my order when theres 10 people behind me. IDK maybe the reverse bigotry is only in my head but then why do they snap at me rudely and give me a mean tone. I don't do anything to deserve this other than show up to spend big money on a pastry that isn't the best but at least scratches an itch for a decent french pastry. The decor is fine, nothing too bad or good in my opinion. I have been to several other bakeries in town and gotten way friendlier service. Passing through and looking for a decent, sit down breakfast. The croissant sandwich with bacon and egg was SO delicious! And not greasy like one might expect. The croissant was fluffy and the bacon just crispy enough while maintaining texture to bite into. I added cheese and a small glass of milk. I made it all the way home (4 1/2 hours later) without my tummy growling. I fly through PDX frequently and this is a stop to repeat!!!! read more

I live nearby and has been a royal customer. But recently I visited two times, both time they forgot my latte orders. The blue ribbon sandwich I ordered yesterday was just so so. The French baguette was hard as rock. Even the scones were cold, dry, and hard. The quality as a bakery is going down. The food in the cafe of lifetime gym is much better quality than this supposedly professional bakery. Although the cashier and server are nice and can strike a friendly conversation, the bread and coffee need to be improved. And please remember the customer's order after the chit chat. read more

This place is right near my house, and when the morning really gets going between eight and ten o' clock, the line to order usually extends outside of the door. The tiny parking lot is always full, and it's easy to see why. The menagerie of improved household staples and tasty treats in the display case is impressively diverse, with cinnamon rolls, muffins, coffee cake, and cookies sitting next to quiche, baguettes, croissants, and como breads ready to be sliced for sandwiches and toast. They make a pretty good cup of coffee or tea, and you can also order their in-house variety of sandwiches, which are very nice, but this is a bakery and the bread is always the star of the show. I would say the people here understand that the key to great baking in the French tradition is texture, and that's where all of their products really shine. The outer coating of most breads is a paper-thin layer of crunchy goodness with fluffy and gooey in various degrees just beneath. I worked at a top local bakery in my twenties and we never got close to this level of perfection. Honestly, it's amazing that the staff is able to handle such a wide selection and I struggle to imagine just how much work must go into it when crowds aren't milling around. And speaking of crowds, "Grand Central Bakery" is an appropriate name, because the ambiance in this place is like a bustling train station, always packed, with people rushing here and there to get breakfast and a loaf of bread to take home. For the sheer volume of people moving through it, the staff is always fast while still managing to take the time to smile. Truly, this must be one of Portland's best culinary franchises, and perhaps the best bakery I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. read more

So... I definitely don't like to complain. At all. But, this experience might be worth sharing so you don't go spend $50 with tip on some sandwiches, coffee, an egg and be disappointed. This is just one experience, but the first, and the experience was not ideal. With gas prices being outrageous and widespread inflation, I suggest spending your money elsewhere. I will say that the people at counter and coffee area were polite. Being new to the area I was told I had to try this place. Stopped in around 11:30am on a Sunday for a quick bite with 2 yr old and her mom. The line was maybe 5 people from 2 different parties long. Not long at all and there was ample seating available. So my assumption is that it was not busy. First, our food took over 45 minutes to get at the counter. Order consisted of two veggie sandwiches and a scrambled egg for the little one. We already had our toddler's pastry from when we ordered at the counter. After about 30 mins of waiting patiently and seeing people behind us in line getting their food, I had to politely ask the sandwich maker where our food was. I was told "we're working on it." There was no ask of name, or order. I replied, "how do we know if you don't know which order is mine?" The order: Ordered a Happy Garden sandwich for the pregnant lady, and the sandwich consisted of bread and avocado. See picture. When we asked what veggies were in it since the menu read "seasonal veggies," we were told avocado. I am no horticulturist, but an avocado I thought was a fruit. To boot, the pickle looked like it sat out of it's jar for a good week or so. See pic. But back to the sandwich, how can you call a sandwich a "Happy Garden" if it has one ingredient which is avocado. There was no ask if we wanted to try something different after the inquiry and shared dissatisfaction. Simply, "there you go," with a smile. I also ordered a PLAIN scrambled egg for a 2.5 yr old. The egg came with pepper all over it. Doused in pepper. Now, in any situation like this, where the customer has now expressed dissatisfaction, it should be asked if the customer wants a new egg. No ask came from the staff. And, even if I did ask, did I really want to wait another 45 mins? Overall this experience just left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I've been a pretty regular customer at Grand Central bakery for the last few months. Today I entered the restaurant, placed my order and found out that their POS system was down. They demanded that I go to my car and get cash which I did. I paid for my order and I dropped a tip in the jar, baby telling everyone behind me because their POS system was down the food was on. Then proceeded to tell me they were out of what I had ordered , and make a substitution without asking if I was OK with it. I wound up, dumping my drink, and taking my pastry to go. Nuuummmm! This is my favorite place to stop for specialty baked goods for the office. They have incredible variety with savory and sweet available. My favorite items to snag include their buttery quiche, chocolate croissants and cinnamon sugar donut muffins. Food isn't bad but it takes around 20-30 minutes for them to prepare a sandwich and that's not even during peak hours. I'm honestly getting tired of it and provably will start going elsewhere. It's also a dufficult location to get to jfyi. Maybe management should hire another cook for a store as popular as this one. read more

We've tried a bunch of pastries from this bakery, and also breakfast and lunch. And everything's been pretty good. The pastries are not overly sweet, which I love! The sandwiches and salads are very fresh. The turkey & chutney and veggie grinder sandwiches and the southwest chicken salad are some of our favorites. Although I love the flavors in the veggie grinder and the flavor itself of the bread, the bread happens to be extremely chewy. I wish they would change that, although I still keep going back for it. They've been open for pick-up during the covid times. Just place the order upfront and after a wait of upto 10-15 minutes, pick it up from another window.
