Decided to walk over here while we waited for a table at a nearby establishment. We picked up a few baked goods and a coffee. They have drip coffee from Nossa coffee, one of my favorite places. Service was good. Quick and friendly. They are currently donating proceeds from their "Pride" shortbread cookies, so we had to buy some. The cashier thanked us for our donation. The shortbread cookies were my favorite and went well either way the coffee. We got an apple hand pie which was average. I didn't care much for the ham and cheese croissant but my wife enjoyed it. When it comes to artisan rustic bread Gran Central Bakery is by far my favorite in town. With its many locations throughout the Portland metro areas is very convenient for you. Their service is outstanding as well as their options in pastries too and not mentioning their coffee selections. The atmosphere that you'll experience will be that of when you're around someone's home when you feel very comfortable that you will comeback again and again. The location is cool but parking sucks. My food was not great at all. My biscuit was burnt & tasted almost gluten free or something with how dry and dense it was. My bacon was burnt & my over medium egg came over hard. The blue ribbon sandwich my husband got was better. Black drip coffee was pretty weak & the service was unfriendly. It's also not cheap for what you get. I think there enough quality coffee shops and bakeries and restaurants in PDX that this one doesn't match up with many others. read more

Food is so so overpriced even for Portland, but it's solid food, to be fair. I only let myself get smaller bakery items since they tend to be about $5ish, and because it's so close to my job and the service is quick. However, the two ladies at the front counter on weekday mornings are so incredibly rude. The girl with the ginger hair and bangs, tends to wear bandanas, and the other girl with dark long hair and is black. First time I encountered them I thought I caught them on an off day so I didn't think too much of it. My co worker also went later on, during his break and said they were rude to his as well, but again, maybe a rough day. I went in again today, however, it was the same two girls. So incredibly rude, dismissive, don't look at you and just say 'what do you want'. I understand not wanting small talk and just wanna get people in and out but a 'hey what can I get for ya' goes a long way. You don't even have to smile, just do the bare minimum!! The quality and range of offerings of this bakery is equivalent to Panera - edible mass produced soul less food masquerading as a neighborhood bakery- not sure how or why it's so busy- much of these baked items anyone could make at home or get a microwaved iteration from Trader Joe's. Been eyeing to come to this location for the longest time, glad to finally dropby. The iniside is modern but cozy with light wooden interior. It's pretty bustling with constant traffic all morning. We went specifically on a Friday to grab their Challah loaf that I've been thinking about for 5 months since I last had a taste. I love how fluffy the inside of the challah is. Also got a very solid crust on the outside. I ate a third of it straight and saving the rest for bread pudding. We also got some coffee and their Special Sasquatch Sausage Sandwich to share. The sandwich was AMAZING. Some of the best sandwiches I've had. Evenly toasted on both sides and filled with gooey gouda cheese, slices of well-roasted and sweet butternutsquash and a sausage patty. Disappointing experience visiting recently. I have not been to Grand Central Bakery in years and it was clear that this is not the same Grand Central that I grew up with. The pastries in the case looked day old and they did not offer the classic cinnamon roll with raisins which was the best thing on their menu. I Ordered a hot chocolate which was barely warm and about 1/3 of it was whipped cream. When I said thank you for my drink the girl behind the counter didn't even acknowledge me. I can get past this, but it is clear that corporate interests have taken over at Grand Central. Doing some research, Grand Central is now under the control of a Perpetual Purpose Trust which is essentially one step under private equity ownership. Great Job in ruining one of my favorite places from my childhood!! read more

The level of business they have tells everyone they're fabulous, this glowing review honestly will not add to their esteem. But truly and honestly this is my favorite place on earth. Grand pianos present phenomenal sounds for the many keys and strings that create beautiful noise. Grand central provides many different breads and pastries for your delight. In the last year, I have eaten their sandwiches, chocolate croissants, blueberry muffins, etc. Not only is this place consistent, but it's consistently good. It's definitely in the rotation for a good pastry. It's definitely a 4.5 out of 5, but I've rounded down due to expensive price tag. Another improvable could be to include an unique aspect that this bakery can bring to the table. In other words, I would love to see something that only grand central can do. Grand Central gave me food poisoning. I went to Grand Central at 12 pm on Thursday (1/2/25). I made a mistake in ordering the Frittata sandwich and an iced chai. I would not recommend coming here, it doesn't seem they put much care into preparing food, even my last few experiences the foods: cold, and it takes a long time to prepare just small inconvenience as such. I never thought I'd get food poisoning. I don't know if it's just this location that is the issue, or if Grand Central isn't as "grand" as their name suggests. Stay safe. read more

While I would have loved to try more, this was to be enjoyed later because I had no room for it at the time in my belly. Everything changes. I'm so glad Grand Central Bakery was able to survive throughout Covid. But I don't really feel comfortable at this location. I get the feeling that I'm in their way. I asked for PB&J with the bread toasted. I feel like this is a pretty basic ask. I got a PB&J but it was dripping with oil, it was grilled in a pan, with oil or butter. The three nice people working there all approached and were trying to understand what I needed. They literally didn't know what toast was, they looked puzzled. I finally said, "can you just toast a couple pieces of bread, put jam on one side and peanut butter on the other and hand it to me? Somebody finally mentioned that they don't have a toaster. So I said, "can you just put bread in a pan, dry, and just brown it?" And then make the sandwich with that? " It's called critical thinking. Somebody's asking for toast and you don't have a toaster, so what do you do.... It ended up being the most evenly toasted wonderful bread I've ever had. I guess they learned something. The chocolate croissant was not too sweet and denser than I thought it was gonna be but I would still order it again. We loved their cinnamon rolls. They were sold out the day before Thanksgiving of most bread options, but managed to grab a few items for our family Thanksgiving dinner. On our second visit, we had to have more cinnamon rolls and also enjoyed a delicious latte. Bonus to this location is the farmers market adjacent to it. A two for one deal.
