We are a non-profit organization staffed completely by volunteers. Concerts are held twice each month throughout the year. First Encounter provides a rare opportunity to listen to a variety of fine music in a smoke and alcohol free environment. We offer home-baked treats and hot and cold beverages. Children are welcome and admitted free, so it's a great place to go as a family. Here at our website you can find a schedule of our upcoming concerts, information on mailings and memberships and directions so you can find us." this place is famous, seriously it has had some big names in blues and folk. Its very cheap considering that you will get TWO shows in a row. the building is beautiful with amazing stain glass windows. the acoustics of the room are wonderful for music, amplifying it and holding the sound to perfection. Its intimate, and inviting; the perfect date place. The signers often involve you in the music and have you sing along. It will fill up fast, because this is where the locals go for music on cape cod. Id recommend for bigger shows showing up 20 min ahead of time. Of course they will fit you in, as you can always stand. visit website http://www.firstencounter.org/ for info and to see if there is a concert

For 5 bucks, I received a huge ego boost and a greater understanding of why Boston loves to dance! A word to dates: if you come here with a special someone, expect that you and your partner will dance with other people. Don't worry: it's nothing personal! After the lesson, the studio turned into an open dance featuring live music from Chelsea Reed and the Fairweather Five, an amazing swing band from Philadelphia! The floor was jumping and everyone was having a blast cutting a rug. I personally asked to dance with several people and was surprised to find how gracious and encouraging they were in accepting and subsequently dancing with my square self. The dancers here are very courteous and interested in the improvement of everyone in the club. The snacks and water were provided in copious amounts. The community is strong in this one. I'll be back, Blues Union, and I'll be bringing more people who are interested!

Wow! I can not recommend Jazz in the Air enough. We had them play for our wedding ceremony and…read morereception a couple days ago and they were absolutely perfect if you're looking for some live jazz. All of our guests raved about how great they were. They play both traditional jazz music and a mix of some popular jazz & Latin hits (Frank Sinatra, etc). If you're looking for Sir Mixalot and some Rihanna, you'll have to look elsewhere because these guys have class! First off, Bob was incredibly great to work with. I probably only sent 2-3 emails and a couple phone calls at most about a year out, and a week before the wedding - just indicating what songs we wanted and to confirm some deposits and details. We are pretty much "roll with it" people and gave them the reigns on this one, they showed up and played exactly what we had hoped for. They had a flute and keyboard for our outdoor ceremony with lovely classical music and were perfectly on cue. They even took a lot of requests for songs from our guests during the reception (except for Portuguese music, haha! What did you expect, Auntie-in-law??). Our guests were certainly up and dancing all evening. Also, they didn't have a song in their repertoire (we chose a Chuck Berry song for our first dance) and they actually learned it for us! Lastly, the price was very exceptionally reasonable for the quality, their presentation and their talent. Why need a DJ when you can get such sophistication from live musicians? Highly, highly recommend for your wedding. Thanks, Bob Sabourin & Jazz in the Air!!

The show was…read morefantastic; Emmett, his bass player and percussionist are top-notch jazz performers and anyone who likes jazz should rush to see them whenever they are in town. No photos since they announced "no photography" at the beginning of the show. I only saw one server working the lower level, and we had been seated for about 10 minutes before we even saw her, so we were concerned. That said, once she took our order for drinks they came pretty quickly I've been to Scullers many, MANY times and because there are so few jazz places in Boston I consider myself a regular. That said, as others have noted, there are a lot of tables packed together closely, and for me the best seats are on the left side of the room and near the stage where there is less crowding. The upper level of the room only works if you are in the front row of tables as those behind will likely have someone blocking the view of the stage. The seats at the very back of the room are high tables and better for viewing the stage, but you are at the mercy of fellow patrons if they are prone to chat instead of watching the show.

First and foremost, we are lucky to have Scullers because it is ridiculously hard to find a live…read moremusic jazz venue in Boston. That being said, the place COULD NOT BE MORE ANNOYING. Food service is offered for the entirety of the shows, so just as your favorite band is hitting stride near the end of their last set, large platters of French fries and steaming salmon entrees are still making their way through the concert hall (there is nothing like the smell of a fried fishy dinner being consumed at a dark cafe table on both sides of your table). The kitchen door swings open constantly to accommodate food delivery: the fluorescent light that strobes the mezzanine is Walmart parking lot bright. The drinks menu is uninspired, and in these days where alcohol free cocktails/beverages are often requested, Sculler's offers only Michelob (that's right, Michelob) Ultra Zero. This particular Hilton Doubletree has historically (going back 20 years) struggled with its parking system, their exit scanner often does not work, an attendant has to be called and the line backs up to the third level. My suggestion: get rid of pay for parking, improve your bar menu (charge more for drinks!) and shut down food service during performances out of respect for the performers. The place could also use a house band that can open for the main act and perform on off nightS (hello Berklee College of Music). In summary: YOU NEED A BETTER MANAGER. On a positive note, the waitstaff could not be nicer.

She sang standards and original compositions, and the vibe of the evening was warm as she interspersed her set with acknowledgements to her Cambridge family and friends in attendance, and the city where she grew up. The drinks were fine; the only complaint was our seats right by the door, which ordinarily wouldn't have been a problem except that the ceiling stage lighting to the left of the stage was in our eyes which made it impossible to see the performer unless she stepped away from the center of the stage, which she didn't do often. There are few jazz clubs in the Boston area so I will always return to the Regattabar if there is someone playing I want to see. I find it a cozy environment although there are a couple of structural pillars that create obstructed viewing that aren't acknowledged upon ticket purchase. I've seen folks seated in those areas; If I ever am placed behind one I will definitely ask to be moved or leave and request refund.

They sell overpriced bottled water ONLY (no tap water available to customers, I felt like I was being nickle and dimed), if you are drinking alcohol and trying to stay hydrated know that you'll be paying for overpriced bottled water AND contribute to consumer waste, I find that unacceptable. Boston has great jazz clubs that dont nickle and dime you, we are not coming back to regatta.
