Mattakeese Wharf... mmhmm! A destination and one we frequent on a whim; we will drive from WeBe to Barnstable just for a dinner. Everything is top shelf, fresh and prepared exceptionally well. Prices are just right. Staff is friendly and very professional. The menu is large and the facility is large, nautical themed, and also very clean. A darn fine two pound boiled lobster. Seasonal. Valet parking. It's like visiting an old friend at the North River House or Justin's Hearthside... you know it's going to be good. No negatives whatsoever. A must visit when on the Cape. read more

We had been a couple years ago and loved it! Just went last Tuesday at lunchtime and very disappointed! I had stuffed lobster...bill was over $141.00... Husband had the smallest fried clams ever seen and not good! My lobster consisted of the claws...looked like they scraped the inside of the lobster and filled with scallops! The potato salad was awful as,well as the green beans! The waiter was useless and couldn't be found most of the time! Our bus boy was at least helpful! He dropped our food off and it took me till I was almost done before I got the melted butter! We never would go again!! read more

1. Not a single clam in 2 bowls of their "award winning" chowdah. Sand was free. 2. Their broiled scallops were drowning in an unidentifiable liquid, what should have been Ritz topping was an orange mush. Green beans were nicely al dente but unfortunately served my least fav way: brushed with whatever oil the kitchen uses. 3. Their drinks SUCK. Had a manhattan and a Hugo spritz. Barely tasted any bourbon and the Hugo spritz was all club soda, not a drop of champagne or st germain. 4. Lobster bisque was very sherry forward 5. My kids burgers were medium when medium rare was ordered. The positive was the wedge salad had a TON of blue cheese. I suspect this place stays in business bc of all the whale watchers exiting the boat. Sad to leave such a negative review but if you're reading this, find another place. My 2lb baked stuffed lobster was raw. The claws were ok, but when I got to the lobster body, the tail and body were raw. To "make it right". The manager comped our drinks--- a martini and a water, and a bowl of soup. Really? My dinner was $78. The manager refused to come talk to us. And while we were eating, they decided it was a great time to vacuum and wash the windows. The windows were open, so we were sprayed with Windex while eating. Well, only one of us was eating, I was looking at a raw lobster on a plate. I've never left a restaurant hungrier than when I came in before, this was a first , and last. I will definitely not be returning to this establishment. I don't mind paying the price for good food, but I definitely did not get that here. I'll spend my hard earned money elsewhere. read more

Tonight was the first time I went to this establishment for dinner. At first it was going well until I asked for a change to the chicken Milanese. I asked for a replacement of risotto instead of the items they put under the chicken. The waitress said it would be an up charge, I agreed thinking it was a few extra dollars. Once I got the bill it was a $28 up charge for the risotto. My chicken was a cutlet not Milanese. As I mentioned it was my first visit. I will not return but more importantly service staff needs to be trained better and learn how to communicate to the customer what an up charge is for this restaurant. An adjusted bill came before I asked which I thought was not appropriate. I was already upset by the first bill. Overall, I was disappointed. read more

Went for lunch on our way to the hotel. Not a fancy place but Nice dining by the water. Parking is valet.. we felt a little odd just leaving our keys with the attendant with no parking ticket in return. Food was so so.. didn't really stand out as compared to a few places we tried at the Cape. Had the lobster roll ($48 MP) which was so so and the creamy clam chowder. It was tasty but I wish it had more clams. The restaurant was near a whale watching tour boat so it's convenient if you're hungry after whale watching, Drinks were ok too. Had spicy margarita which was good and the 'wharf' which was meh. Overall, we agree.. this restaurant is a solid 3 stars. read more

Service was great. Food was served hot. We sat in the screened in area with a nice view of the boat dock and the view is very nice. Food was meh. My stuffed lobster- the stuffing/ scallop portion was generous and the scallops were very good. The lobster was not good. Waterlogged, mushy, just not right. Lobster risotto had a large amount of lobster and the risotto was ok but a bit watery. Drinks were good and again the staff were wonderful. The lobster bisque was very good. Sort of a mixed bag. I wish this was open year-round! We choose this restaurant based on past reviews, word-of-mouth info, and gut instincts. We were not disappointed at all. Right from the moment we puled up, the valet took the car and made us feel immediately at home. The hostesses were wonderful and extremely accommodating in seating us without a reservation. We had a gorgeous table by the window. The service/support staff are more than courteous, and jump at the opportunity to help guests. Our server Alison (please forgive if this is the incorrect spelling) was the cherry on top of the experience. She is informative, funny, and so personable! We began our dining experience with the Yellow Bikini and Sandy Neck Light Punch cocktails. They were delicious, and perfectly refreshing on a hot day. We had oysters that were so fresh. To follow, we each had a glass of wine, which accompanied our seafood very well. My partner ordered the clam strip roll, as they had never had one before. It was exactly how the roll should be, except Mattakeese gives so many clam strips! We had to take some home, as it was easily enough for a second sandwich. I had the baked haddock. It was so buttery and flavorful, and the veggies on the side tasted good as well. This restaurant is a wonderful all-around experience. The location through the staff, service, and food is all exemplary! I wish this restaurant was open year round. I can picture having a beautiful Christmas dinner here. I had an incredibly disappointing experience at Mattakeese Wharf Waterfront Seafood Restaurant a few days ago, and I feel compelled to share it. I arrived around 3:50 p.m. with a group of 9 adults and 2 young children (both under the age of 2). As I stood near the hostess stand, I witnessed an older woman--who later identified herself as the owner--speaking harshly to a young hostess, questioning why she would seat a party of 11. This made me hesitate, but I approached and politely explained that we were a group of 9 adults and 2 toddlers. I acknowledged that it was a large party and offered to split into smaller groups. Her immediate response was, "No, we will not take you." As I walked away, I heard her taking two reservations: one for a party of 5 and another for 4. Confused, I returned to the stand--by then the older woman had walked away--and spoke to the young hostess. I reiterated that we were three separate families, willing to be seated at separate tables, far apart if needed. She agreed and took our names down for three tables: one of 4, one of 3, and another of 4. The restaurant was closed to transition for, and will be opening at 4:30pm (it was mostly empty, and only a few reservations ahead of us). Shortly after, the older woman returned, saw me, and rushed over, saying, "I'm the owner, and we will not seat you." The young hostess attempted to explain that we were splitting into smaller parties and understood we would not be seated together, but the owner began yelling at her again. The hostess, clearly frustrated and upset, asked for a moment and walked away. At that point, it became painfully clear that the refusal to seat us was not about the party size--but about who we were. I believe, without question, that we were being discriminated against because we are people of color. I was deeply disappointed and told the owner I no longer wished to dine there. If she truly is the owner, it is even more disheartening to know such discriminatory behavior is coming from leadership. No one should be made to feel unwelcome or inferior, especially in a place that claims to offer hospitality. read more

Food could not have been better!!! Clam chowder was thick, tasty and hot. My wife loved the Chicken Parm and my Halibut was outstanding. Sides were hot and tasty. Green beans were perfect. Service was the best!! Lots of smiles and pleasantness. The server was knowledgeable and attentive. The bussers were hustling, very polite and helpful. The restaurant was clean and neat. Work stations were organized. Great harbor views. Valet parking was a lifesaver. The husband took me out for an airing today as I can't drive due to knee replacement surgery. Anyway, we decided to go to Barnstable Village for a bite at a neat old style Cape Cod restaurant. Not fancy, not a shack, but just enough 'color' with the whale watch boats and pleasure crafters in the harbor. We weren't especially hungry but thought we'd split a few things. Hubby chose the fish tacos and I chose the codfish bites. I know.. cod/cod, but the fish was so fresh and tasty we couldn't resist. The codfish bites were perfectly fried and served with a dill pickle tartar sauce. Absolutely delicious and plenty for 2. There were two fish tacos that had a generous portion of fried cod with black bean and corn salsa, coleslaw and garlic crema. The slaw was a non-mayonnaise slaw so it was nice and crunch with the fish. Terrific! We also shared an order to truffle fries without the truffle oil. (I think a little truffle oil once in a while, is OK but everyone overdoes it...) The fries were seasoned with sea salt, fresh pepper and parmigiana. There were two things that were just out of whack. The server asked if we would like plates to share our food and she brought us two bread and butter plates that were just big enough to move an aspirin around on. I could put one fry or one cod bite on the plate, but forget about eating a taco on it. Fortunately someone saw me signaling the server to ask for a larger plate and she came by shortly with warm plates for our 'shares'. The other thing was that when I order unsweetened iced tea, It's because I like unsweetened black tea. I really don't like it when a restaurant says they have iced tea and it is some indefinable mint/herb/fruit tea. Warn your patrons of this when they order it, or simply stick with the black tea that everyone likes. IMHO Will we go back? Do you see 5 stars up there ^ ? We stopped in here for dinner at the recommendation of a local. The first thing we noticed was there is no air conditioning! Ugh it was so humid, I was sweating trying to enjoy my meal. On top of that, the tables are extremely close so you could easily hear the conversation of fellow diners. The restaurant is located on the bay but it's hard to see anything unless you're near the edge. We also thought valet parking only was ridiculous. Onto the food! I enjoyed the bang bang shrimp appetizer and fried calamari. The rolls were very hard. I got the baked seafood platter which consisted of half a lobster, one stuffed shrimp, three scallops and a piece of haddock. Not much lobster but the claw was meaty. I doubt the shrimp was made with any crabmeat as it was a pile of mushy breading. Haddock had no taste. Scallops were decent although a bit overcooked. Came with two small baked potatoes and 4 spears of asparagus. My companion got the lobster roll which came on a hot dog bun. He said it was ok. Came with fries and dry coleslaw for $48! The service was exceptional! We didn't drink and the bill came to $150. read more

Went here on a Wednesday night for dinner Our hotel highly recommended it. Didn't understand the valet parking when the lot was small and easy in/out during off season. But attended very kind. Seated quick table for 2 in back room view of harbor. Nice views. Weather outside was somewhat chilly for end of May and unfortunately that room had a cold draft. Waitress was very nice and service great. 2 martinis very good however pricy, $15-17 ea. Smoked salmon appetizer was superb, quality amazing, highly recommend. Butter for rolls was not real butter, cheap kind In little plastic containers. Caesar salad was mediocre. Fresh shaved parm was unfortunately not used, and croutons tasted like the bagged kind. Grllled chicken on salad was chopped into small pieces and cold. Waitress told me ahead of time when I asked how t was prepared but wanted it regardless. I should have declined as it tasted like it was like a supermarket premade salad. Dressing was ok, in between a creamy and vinaigrette. I tend to prefer creamy. Salmon was great which topped another salad. Dinner was $115 not including tip, 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, 1 Caesar salad w salmon and the other w chicken. Expected a lot more from this restaurant. I love a good Caesar salad and they definitely don't know w to make one. Also, the bathroom odor was horrific, again expected more from a restaurant w entrees over $30. Last night, a group of me & my friends got a round of espresso martinis at Mattakeese. We enjoyed our drinks, paid our bill with tip, and had no issues. Only staying up the road, about an hour later we decided to walk back to have another drink. We ordered 7 lemon drop martinis. Our bartender (different from before) was Kelley, who was friendly at first, but had to double check our order multiple times. We do not want to make assumptions, but even other patrons around us commented something was 'off' with Kelley. After making us a round of terrible drinks, some of which were pure water, I put down my card to pay nonetheless. Kelley refused my card, insinuating it was on the house. Though we were not happy with our order, we were grateful the bill was apparently comp'd. Minutes later, we were handed a bill of about $90. At this point, due to not only the drinks but the strange service we received, we had questions. When asked for a manager, we were met with aggression from Kelley, as far as to say "you guys are all b*tches". To call us names is not only wrong but extremely unprofessional. We tried to explain our situation to our original bartender (who seemed to be "in charge" at the time), during which Kelley was jumping all around, yelling at us sarcastically to 'leave a yelp review' while calling us other explicatives...even going as far as to grab my friends arm from across the bar. At the end of it all, we had our bill comp'd by our original bartender yet still left a $20 tip for the other workers who were forced to mitigate the situation. We have been vacationing in Barnstable for years & have always gone to Mattakeese Wharf to have fun & a quick drink. However, this bartender Kelley has us questioning whether to return as long as she's employed. She was clearly UNWELL, rude, and threatening. We'd like to thank our original bartender (we never got her name unfortunately) for her help --it seemed as though she had been in a situation like this with Kelley before. Beware. read more

We went here after going on a whale watch right next door. We expected it to be packed, and while it was busy I think the wait was only like 20-25 minutes. We got the clam chowder, which tasted good but was honestly a little visibly off putting. As you'll see in the picture, it's almost chunky and looks more like a cup of mashed potatoes then chowder. The steamers were huge, but also quite sandy. The grilled salmon and baked stuffed shrimp were reportedly very good as was the chocolate cake for dessert. read more

First impression was....it's hot inside. When I sat down the chair felt heated from the previous woman that was sitting in it! Hard to enjoy your food when it's that warm inside. I ordered a Cesar Salad. Too warm to order any hot food. I asked for no croutons, anchovies and shrimp. They sent out a salad with just anchovies. So I asked where my shrimp was and they took my salad back. Then they brought out the salad with the shrimp but without the anchovies. This time they just brought out a plate of anchovies for me to add to it myself. The salad was good once they got it right. Maybe the heat is worse in the kitchen?? I dunno. read more

How many times have I been here, 40? 50? It's a mile from my house and my youngest, now 38, worked at Mattakeese one summer. The view is to die for, the service is excellent, the food is C- at best, my whole belly clams tonight tough and tasteless. Do yourself a favor: Stop for a drink then drive up 6A to the Old Yarmouth Inn or the Brewster Fish House, where they take food seriously. read more

This was the first place we visited during our trip to Hyannis. We had a party of 11 which apparently was unusual. We had to go through a bit of a frenzy in order to get them to put two tables together. Someone commented it was their first time having to do that. I'm sorry.. we didn't travel to have our first meal at separate tables. We didn't think our request was strange. The service was decent. In my opinion, the food wasn't anything spectacular. I can't recall what I had which is telling... my bf had some sort of seafood broil that he enjoyed. Others at the table didn't rave about the food, but didn't seem to have any real issues with it. I had heard great things about this place and I was very disappointed. Right as you get in, the table was very packed together and the chairs were very uncomfortable. Menu has a decent amount of options but the drinks took a long time to come out. Food took over an hour to come out but when it did the plate was soaked. Fish and chips were solid but not a lot of food on the plate. Barbecue burger was extremely overcooked and bland. Lots to unpack here. Last evening, a Tuesday night in the last week of August, the host stand was outstanding made us feel welcomed, and so did our server (a smart man who knew his job). The place was jumpin' but not ridiculously so. Ambiance was excellent and right on the water with an unobstructed view of a majestic sunset. The food was less than meh in two cases: the lobster bisque was well seasoned but overly thick where its texture and viscosity was more like a thick sauce than a hearty soup. While nicely seasoned with spices and sherry (though the quality of that was questionable, proving once again that if you won't sip it, don't cook with it), the heaviness was unpleasant despite being garnished with a generous portion of lobster meat. Generous lobster meat along with the scallops and shrimp were in our "Pasta Livorno," but the delicate shell fish ranged from slightly to definitely over cooked. Sadly, and with profound regret, so was the flavorless linguine (misspelled on the menu) what was overcooked in unsalted water. The chef needs to instruct their line cooks a little further about the concept of al dente. Faking a dish with a semblance of Italianesque flavors and calling it "Livorno" (an Italian city located in Tuscany) is amateurish, especially when it should've been "Pasta Livornese." In this case, though, neither name would suit the way this dish was presented to us. The host and server can do just so much for their parts, so the food has to shine as brightly as they did. That didn't happen so we won't be back. read more
