I rounded up and also graded on a national parks restaurant scale because I've been to a number and they always crush my soul with their poor dining options. This one is the best of the lot that I've experienced to date. The minus is that the service is slow seemingly because it's quite understaffed and often there is no host so don't be shy about going in and flagging down someone. I've come here for two breakfasts and two dinners. Each time the servers were friendly and kind as could be. And the food was decent. Breakfast: there is a buffet but I opted each time for the two egg special and found it satisfying though unseasoned. The over medium eggs were cooked as requested, the multigrain toast is quite tasty (though one day I got two, a little bit blackened but still tasty, the second day only one), the meat sausage is decent /standard diner fare, the vegan sausage had a good crunchiness on the outside but the flavor was a little wanting so I had to douse this in hot sauce, but the highlight is the perfectly crispy hash browns. It's done right, the potatoes tender. The granola here is fine though the yoghurt is sweetened with honey which I could do without. Onto dinner: the thinly sliced and breaded pork with a remolata (tomato based) sauce on top is quite crispy and delicious, a perfect post hike meal. The grilled veggies are forgettable and overly mushy but okay, and the scoop of rice that comes with it is over cooked and not worth eating. The personal pizza is quite nicely done and cheesy and thick yet crispy. Add whatever toppings: we were happy with pepperoni, olive, and mushrooms. Note that the onions here are uncooked. The veggie burger is a little mushy so perhaps skip. The side salads and cups of chili are solid. The dining took itself is striking: floor to ceiling glass windows to look out onto a green forest and meadow. Just don't be in a rush because getting seated and getting food takes awhile. read more

This was the worst food I have ever had. We were hopeful with the menu selection that this would be a good place to eat. We had the plant based burger which arrived wrapped in paper and cold and tasteless, the bread was soggy. Really? You don't serve a burger cold and soggy. The "soup" was tomato sauce out of a can. We were actually shocked at how terrible this place was. We were looking forward to dining here for breakfast and dinner since we are staying in the nearby lodge for two days. You order from a teenager, three steps inside the door, behind a cash register, like a fast-food restaurant. No one greets you. It is cold and dark inside so I recommend eating outside. The person who delivered the food didn't speak English so we couldn't ask for mustard. Food was not served on plates. This was most unfortunate given we had paid a 18% tip when we ordered the food. You had to get up to get your own napkins and cutlery. We ordered the veggie burger, which was tasteless, dry and the bun seemed to have been stale or microwaved until it was tough. You had to eat it off of the paper wrapper it came on. The chopped salad was average in a to-go container that was likely made earlier in the day. There was no staff to be found to ask for extra dressing as the kid behind the cash register had a long line of people to take orders from. No way to ask for water. With no music in the large dining room, it would have been a dismal experience if we hadn't eaten outside with the ants and bird poop. We came here for breakfast. We got the yogurt, breakfast burrito with bacon, and breakfast bagel with sausage. It was easy to order and we quickly received our food. The Grant Grove Restaurant gets the job done - decent food, good service, nice location next to a meadow and close to the lodge/cabins. In the winter, it can be really dark at dinner time but it's only a 5-7 minute walk from the John Muir Lodge to the restaurant. Just make sure you bring your flashlight or phone. Dinner - We had to wait a bit to get seated but there was enough space in the entryway to wait and warm up from the freezing temps outside. Service was quick and warm. My ribs were chewy (and not really trimmed) and could've used more time in the oven, but the chili was quite good and having fresh asparagus in late November was nice. The others in my group liked their steak and burger, so maybe it's just the ribs that weren't cooked long enough. Prices are a bit high, but you're in a national park in the middle of nowhere so what do you expect? Breakfast - We did the breakfast buffet so we could eat fairly quickly and get outside. There was a full buffet of yogurt, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon/sausage, potatoes, muffins/bagels, and waffles. Since the waffles sat in a chafing dish the texture became sort of chewy. It was also a bit weird not to have a toaster for the bagels. I'm not sure anyone really wants cold bagels to start their day. I would rank this as average *** A-OKAY considering it's located in a National Park area and is one of the only local options for convenient dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food quality is okay and the portions are as well, depending upon what you order. The breakfasts seems like the least greatest (or let's say worst) of deals, but the dinner was a lot better. I saw others order the hamburger, steak and pizza, all looked like they represented to fulfill a hearty appetite well, especially the whole pizza, which looked shareable. The prices aren't gouging considering the location, being held captive in the area, but are also not that cheap either, but again, considering the location and situation as well as options, it's good enough and nothing to really truly complain about. The service can be a tad slow, even when the restaurant isn't full to capacity, I think maybe it's laid back and they want to give customers time to unwind, 'tho it's not super attentive and harder to get the bill as a proactive action on their part, so you usually have to get their attention to request your bill. That's not a complaint more than a comment, and it's better than feeling rushed out I guess, if you think of it that way. read more

For dinner I had a burger two nights in a row due to the limited selection while my wife had a salad with chicken one night and the "gourmet grilled cheese" the next. Again, the burger was good, not great. The salad was surprisingly large and good while the grilled cheese was boring. The ordering system uses a kiosk and you pick up the food in a window. I am quite surprised at the low reviews of this place. We ate here because we were staying at Grant Grove cabins and it's walkable and very convenient. Also there's no other option of restaurant in this Kings Canyon area. We came here three times for dinner. My bf enjoyed the Tioga-Sequoia beers - Golden Ale and the Firefall. We had their Chicken wings, Grill cheese sandwich, Burger and Pizza. The toppings can add up. The food was actually pretty good, especially considering the place is in the middle of nowhere and located inside a national park. The service was ok but when they get busy, you have to get their attention. The price was decent. Definitely, sit outside on the patio overlooking the meadows. Twice we saw a deer and a family of squirrels are also out everyday. Enjoyed the dinner, fresh air and the view. read more

I went here with my fam for lunch while seeing the sights. They only had outdoor seating available which seemed alright. The food here tastes fine but it is a bit pricey, but the main problem is that there are so many bugs outside! They kept getting on our clothes and going on our food and especially in my salad and our water bottles, just everything! They're even small enough to crawl or get into our water containers so we had to empty and refill some of our bottles. Luckily the restroom area was open where it was clean and they had one of those water refill stations. I guess my family and I are not campy people but holy cow they were driving us insane! read more

As a person that likes to travel I am always on the look out to try new places outside of my local city. However, there's nothing much around and you can't expect too much from a national park restaurant. In addition, we were staying at the lodge so going anywhere else was not much of an option without making a trek. This place is at the most, okay. Just don't expect anything special. Service was slow but our waitress was nice. We just got the soup of the day and veggie pizza. The soup was actually pretty good and the veggie pizza was not good. It consisted of artichoke hearts, garlic, mushroom and olives. They just put way too much cheese so the dough was a little underdone and the garlic cloves were pretty crunchy still. They have good ingredients but I think they don't have a good chef/cook or whatever. We didn't like it so much, that we only ate about half of it and refused to take it to-go even though the waitress asked us literally 3 times if we wanted to take it to-go. Honestly, I just feel really bad for this place. If I were in a bad mood I would probably be giving this place a horrendous review. But I cannot be in a bad mood at such a beautiful place. This was a welcome retreat from the cold outside. We dined here twice and bought dinner to take home once during our recent vacation to Kings Canyon National Park. I chuckle as I read about all these negative reviews. This is not a place for fine dining. You're in the middle of a national park. Don't expect a fancy schmancy meal. The meals we ordered satisfied our hunger. I've tried their chicken wrap, Philly cheesesteak sandwich (a special that's not on the menu), pizza, chicken quesadilla, and street tacos. I would not recommend the chicken wrap. It was cold and sour because of the sauerkraut. Besides the sour, there wasn't any savory taste or anything to make the food taste good. It was cold and dry and hard to go down. The philly cheesesteak was the best thing we ordered! So delicious down to the last bite. I recommend getting their specials when they offer them. Their pizzas are pretty good too. Chewy hand-rolled crust! The chicken quesadilla was my second favorite. It was delicious! The kids loved it. And lastly, the street tacos were just alright. Nothing to write home about, really. We happened to visit during a non-busy season. So I didn't see the wait some people complained about. Despite some cons I mentioned above, I believe the pros far outweigh them! It's close to the entrance and Grant Grove. So you can enter the park, eat lunch, and be on your way for a hike at Grant Grove. This makes planning a trip with little ones so much easier! read more

Honestly an underrated spot inside King's Canyon National Park! Prices are good and reasonable for being inside a national park!!! The restaurant is closed but there is quite a bit of outdoor seating. Side note: use the restaurant's bathrooms... much cleaner and nicer than the bathrooms next to the visitor center!!! I got the Chicken Sandwich with a side cup of chili for $12.95! Large, but thin piece of grilled chicken. There is also a really good pesto sauce! You can't go wrong with the chili either! Definitely a steal and really filled me up. My Dad got the Grant Burger 4oz for $8. Looked pretty good too. Definitely recommend this place for a quick lunch/bite to eat before hitting the lake or exploring the park! read more

My family has fond memories of it back in the day (20-30 years now), and my parents always looked forward to the Blackberry Pie. Unfortunately, that pie is no longer there. In fact, the restaurant is not really there either--indoor seating is not permitted, and the kiosk where we had to order (no wait staff) was broken, so the screen would not light up and display the menu. I will say, the service window had our Mixed Berry pies ready in less than ten seconds (because they were pre-cut and boxed), but when we sat down to eat them, the berries and other fruit were half-frozen. It said berry but there was only a strawberry and then either peach or apple slices. They were frozen and tasteless. What was worse is that the mixed berry pie didn't taste like berries at all, but instead, there was a strong taste of Jalapeño...NOT what we were expecting. The restaurant did not serve Jalapeños, according to the window staff, so that means that the bakery who provided the pie mixed two products, either in the mixing/baking process or when cutting slices. Staff was kind, but I would certainly recommend staying away from the 'mixed berry' pie, especially if you do not want a taco taste in your dessert. Also, I would say be wary if you have allergies or intolerances. read more

When in Rome, eat pizza. When in a National Park, eat pizza. My made-up aphorism (perhaps an afauxrism?) happens to be true when eating at Grant Grove Restaurant. I think they realize their short-comings since the gnocchi and schnitzel were removed from the dinner menu. I thought I was ordering conservatively with a diner favorite like meatloaf. The texture of the meatloaf was fine but oddly unidentifiable flavors from the gravy and smashed red potatoes was disturbing. Like the meatloaf, the char-grilled Grant burger had proper beef but the side of very cold pasta salad had a tinge of mystery flavor. The rule for dinner is to order salad and pizza. The simple Caesar salad and the enormous gorgonzola and pear salad were good bets. The four-cheese personal pizza with puffy crust was the "go to" item. Be sure to order the pizza and not the roughly assembled pesto flatbread appetizer. The wine was the best thing we had. The small wine list was full of unswerving California wines like the MacMurray pinot noir, William Hill cabernet sauvignon, and Louis Martini cabernet sauvignon. The low markup on the bottle prices were bargains. Spirits are not served but can be found in the neighboring building at the Grant Grove Market (also the post office). Dinner entree portions were on the small size and consequently overpriced while the breakfast plates were traditional American caloric overloads like the ham-heavy Western omelet with hash browns and generic fruit cup. So a 2 star for service and a 4 star for food. And to be honest, a lot of this has to do with comparison with a previous hotel near Yosemite. The food was good, a little pricy but it's not easy to get up there and I imagine that it's a little costly to get things to Grant Grove. I had a variety of dishes 3 dinners in a row and was not disappointed. They have a good variety and rotating specials each night. Now while the service staff was nice, it was painfully slow. I am not sure if it's understaffed or whatever, but it took 2 hours from sitting down to leaving 2 of our 3 nights. We heard people complain and a few people who left because the service was so slow. The hotel we stayed at near by said that after 630 there was often a wait due to popularity. And our first night we got there about 7pm. We did wait maybe 30min for a table but the service was quick and efficient. So our 2nd two nights we went around 530 to avoid the crowd. And while we got seated immediately, our time there was exponentially longer. Don't come starving, have something to read/games to play, and have the expectation you won't have a quick meal. With those things covered, you'll enjoy it. read more

I was actually shocked how bad this was. The menu at first seemed quite hopeful with some yummy-sounding bistro type items and lots of vegetarian choices. But the ordering was all on an automated touch screen, there was no staff to be found, the kitchen tucked away out of sight. Your food was called out by your order number and handed off to you by an anonymous black-clad staff member who then disappeared down their rabbit hole. The "plant-based burger" was actually a cold glob-patty of food-processed garbanzo beans (very bland in flavor, not falafel-like which would have been fine), pressed between two cold untoasted bun-halves, with a slice of tomato and a partial leaf of green lettuce and WAY too much sauce which had a weird sweet flavor to it. The "Chef's daily special vegetarian soup" could have been diced tomatoes out of a can heated up. Most of this food ended up in the trash, we only ate enough not to starve before our hike. read more

We waited about 10mins to sit down around 2:30pm. The dining room wasn't even half full and it took about 10mins before I asked a server passing by if we could order drinks. She told us our server "probably be right over". There were about 4 servers and 3 runners from what I saw came and went, while we waited. I saw her go tell a younger teenage guy something and he came over to us. He was our server and warned us that the kitchen was running behind about an hour for any entrees. If we had been told this by the host when they sat us, I would have chosen somewhere else to eat. Everyone just seemed to be moving in slow motion, he took our orders so we both ordered a garden salad and bowl of chilli, since he said that could be made quickly ( those two things were prepped). The salad was tiny as shown in the photo and the chilli beans were not cooked thoroughly. I kept getting raw beans in my bites. It was pretty tasteless and he forgot to put onions and cheese on the top like I requested. This wasn't lunch rush hour or dinner yet (started at 4:30pm), I can imagine how they would fail even harder then, than this slow time I was there. I must say, after reading the reviews for this restaurant, I was pretty shaken up. I mean it must be REALLY AWFUL for this place to have 2 stars right? But lemme give you the lowdown. My boyfriend and I stayed at the John Muir lodge last night and stopped here for breakfast before hitting the road. As many have said before us, this is the only spot in SEKI for food so your options are limited. Perhaps this is also why we decided to give it a shot despite these gut wrenching reviews. To our complete surprise, this place was NOTHING like the reviews said before us. Either new management has taken over, or we came at a good time, but our breakfast experience here was nothing short of warm & fuzzy feelings. The only server, Pamela, was attending to 5 tables all full of hungry campers effortlessly with a huge smile on her face the entire time. She was sweet, happy, and attentive - by that I mean our coffee cups were never empty, our food was hot, our check was fast, and our tummies, FULL! For breakfast, I ordered the potatoes and 2 eggs a la carte and my boyfriend ordered the vegetable ratatouille with 2 eggs sunny side up, as well as two orders of toast and jam. Our check came out to be 24 dollars total which is pretty affordable given our remote 7,000 ft location. SO THERE IT IS FOLKS. The best one could say about eating here is that the restaurant offers decent, hot, prepared food at 6500 feet (whether or not two feet of snow is on the ground), and when you walk outside afterward you'll be in the heart of perhaps the most beautiful forest in the state. The food could hardly be less interesting, and it's overpriced by any normal measure of things, but considering that you're supporting the parks system and no one has ever come here for the food, you won't actually be disappointed. *For Grant Grove Pizza Only* In the park, I was starving and options were limited. I would have eaten paper napkins if they'd give me some ketchup. But here it is guys, Grant Grove Pizza is actually really good. $8.75 for a small two topping pizza that was delicious, with lots of good cheese and chewy crust. The cheese garlic bread looked insanely good but the portion would have been gigantic. I inquired about getting a half order and the nice girl behind the counter made it for me and didn't even charge. Being in the pitiful state that I was in (with a camera battery charging behind me), that sort of kindness really felt good. This place being in a prime location to rip you a new asshole with bad food and high prices, choose not to do so. The pizza was great by any standard, service friendly, and everything is reasonably priced. read more

Giving this place 5/5 stars because it was absolutely amazing after all the other restaurants/businesses I've had to deal with while visiting Sequoia and King's Canyon National Park. FOOD: Their food might not be somewhere I would crave or go out of the way to get, but honestly compared to all the places I've eaten this weekend, this place is gourmet! We grabbed the Burger and wings, and both were actually really great and the price was much lower than what we had grown accustomed to paying after this weekend. SERVICE: The service is probably the biggest reason I'm giving this place a 5/5. After spending time in Sequoia and Kings Canyon this weekend, I basically had to accept that because it was a national park and there was nowhere else to go, everyone would treat you like complete shit. Luckily and surprisingly, this was not at all the case here. Not only was the service at this restaurant great, they were extremely friendly and helpful and when I needed to get some work done they allowed me to stay at the table after I finish my meal and just utilize the free wifi. When they were finally closing down and turning off their lights (2 hours after their posted business hours) they even recommended a nearby location I could use to get some more work done. Super surprised and impressed by this location. Especially since I had a horrible experience with the affiliated housing/lodging office on the same day. read more

That's the best! That might be enough of a review on it's own! But no. there is also the food. And the service. The worst biscuits and gravy. EVER. I think it was a type of cement, not gravy. Poor Cook - BET you a million that s/he is forced to use a packet. Tasted like glop. Sure the bacon was good - but even charred, bacon is good! (ok, unless it's raw - that's not their problem!) Scrambled eggs HAD to have been rehydrated. They were dry and tough and tasteless. Waitresses and servers (seemed to be all female) have no direction, no management and with that yelling, angry woman "directing," who would? I Now, I know that blaming staff has a place, but I also know that poor management is what *really* kills service. Waiting for water, waiting for coffee, waiting for food, food coming out at different times...Gosh was there anything besides the bacon that was ok? Oh! The water. Once we got it, that is. The hot chocolate had whipped cream...ya think Cook made it? Ha, ha, ha, ha...did I make ya giggle? Prices ARE gouging (the Market doesn't gouge - it's just costly, as one would expect though). As many above me here have said - skip this place and get the pizza! WAY better for the cost and the taste and even the atmosphere...even though it's literally in the same "room" of sorts, it has a fun vibe. I will review that, later, separately. I hope. It too has its pros and cons. It's a shame that this isn't any better. It's taking advantage of the campers and it's tacky. It's the only negative thing about Grant's Grove. So avoid it. Bring food - it's not too hard to live out of an ice chest and have a pizza or a bit of a snack from the market. I just had an epiphany! Let's send the chef from Restaurant Impossible" in! This was our first trip back to Sequoia/Kings Canyon in nearly six years, so we were very excited AND hungry! The first night, it was a quiet night but the waitstaff was still on point. We were seated immediately and met our server right away. Not one but two servers played with our little one and helped her keep busy. The food came and it was good. My steak was cooked right and my wife loved her meatloaf. The prices were reasonable considering where we were at 6500 feet elevation! The next morning we returned for a buffet and despite the busy morning crowd we got another attentive and friendly server who even drew a Sequoia tree for our daughter to color since they had no coloring pages! My advice: take those other reviews with a grain of salt as there are SO MANY factors that affect service at a restaurant, especially one in such a busy tourist destination. read more

Sierra veggie combo pizza was good and the portion was huge (took some in a box to go). Not sure it is really the farm to table type food as described on their website. Seemed like a typical restaurant in a national park. Service was horrible! After a long day in the park, my friends and I were famished and were excited to find a place that served beyond chicken fingers and fries. We sat promptly and our waitress Liz was super helpful and friendly. We ordered chicken quesadillas to start. Before they came out we were provided with fresh bread. The quesadillas were good and tasted pretty standard for a quesadilla. I had the vegetarian burrito but added chicken. It was overall good but the combination of veggies inside was odd as it seemed they just threw any veggie they had in it. The kettle chips on the side were good. My friend had a turkey club and a salad and he enjoyed his meal. This place serves the purpose of filling your belly beyond standard fast food you will receive in most of these situations as you are in the mountains with miles and miles of cliffs highway between you and the nearest fine dining establishments. Don't come here looking for 5 star fancy food because that's not it's purpose. If you want something beyond the norm, this place does what it's supposed to. Plus it was very clean, too! read more
