Definitely make a reservation as wait times stretch to an hour or over at peak dinner time. We fortunately had one but after being seated, we waited 20 minutes for drinks and just over 60 minutes for our entrees. All four of the cheeseburgers we ordered were cooked over well done and were tough which was a shame because they could have been good burgers otherwise. The chili that we ordered as sides to the burgers however was delicious. Overall a frustrating dinner experience but you are a little bit at their mercy if you want to have a meal in the park. read more

I don't know why this place has such bad reviews - we had a great experience. My friend and I were ready for some carbs after hiking to the lakes that day and the veggie lasagna hit the spot. We both ended up ordering it and both loved it. The wine was very reasonably priced as well, plus they had a few wines we liked so choosing was easy. I would absolutely dine here again on my next trip (and I'll probably order the veggie lasagna again!). read more

We read the reviews about the newly completed restaurant at the Kings Canyon/ Grant Grove visitor center near the Park entrance. They have been building this new complex for over a year. Simple, modern, the usual but acceptable design and ambiance. They problem is the food. Bread dried out, fries tasting of old oil, and other symptoms of low volume. You should expect this if you travel there in the off season as we did. I had a simple burger and only the meat and the pickle were edible. Several parties next to us had the same experience, however several including my Wife had salads they seem to enjoy. Service was only fair as the few employees seemed a little frantic and overwhelmed. I don't live far from the Park so we will go back again in the summer. In the meantime keep it simple or maybe just settle for an ice cream bar from the little market. read more

I got the hummus (with cucumber, flat bread, tomatoes, and celery), Grant burger with side salad. The bread w the hummus had hair on it, the burger patty had hair in it, as well as my salad. Considering that the dining options are limited within the park, we reasoned that Grant Grove would churn out lazy, reliably subpar dishes. We were glad to be proven wrong. Who can reasonably expect fine dining in the forest? Come on, you dining snobs! We ordered a cobb salad and a hamburger. We were pleasantly surprised that they split the dishes on two plates for us. The huge salad was loaded with ham, turkey, and avocado. The hamburger, while cooked too well for my tastes, consisted of a handmade patty. The fries were thick cut and fairly crisp. Good job. The breakfast buffet was also a welcome surprise. The egg and ham scramble and roasted squashes tasted good. The berry muffin was very sweet and fluffy. Bacon was chewy but passable. Biscuit was no Popeyes biscuit but passable. Steer clear of the rubbery pancakes and the overcooked ham. Berries tasted pretty fresh. read more

Like the other review states, this is the only restaurant around for miles. Went here for both breakfast and dinner; and both times, we had terrible service, as it was both slow and complacent. They're scraping the bottom of the barrel with the servers they've got up there. The food was okay, dinner better than breakfast, as it seemed as if my egg and potatoes had been warmed up in the microwave, and DO NOT get the fruit, looked like it had been cut a few days ago. So... you're in the middle of the forest. And you're hungry. Where do you go? Well... here. It's kind of your only option, but that doesn't mean it's terrible. After wandering in the store for a while, I walked back to the restaurant and was seated within a few minutes. It was relatively crowded (about lunch time on a Saturday), but the service was great. My server brought me plenty of refills, checked on me often and never rushed me. I ordered the grilled eggplant sandwich which was pretty good. I remember it has a roasted red pepper tapenade that was basically heaven. The prices were reasonable, and seriously? You're in the middle of the forest. And hungry. read more

Been coming up to Kings Canyon for a few years and always stop for lunch here. They get Three STARS since the waitress (Ashley) seem to forgot she had customers in here area. Wow, I have never had such TERRIBLE SERVICE and inattention to food safety before. They were not busy, it is the off season. We waited 30 minutes to be seated and have drinks brought, then the waitress never brought over sugar for my iced tea, we had to go find it ourselves. Then another 45 minutes until we got our food, the Pork Tenderloin, which was the "special of the day". When it finally arrived, the pork was cold, raw, and bloody. I am not a chef, but shouldn't you learn in chef school that pork must be properly cooked? We sent the pork back for proper cooking, but the waitress said the chef claims the pork had already been cooked to "the proper temperature". THIS IS THE WORST RESTAURANT I HAVE BEEN TO IN AGES, and no one should visit it. It should be closed and padlocked as a public service. read more

The food is pretty decent, but the service is terrible. We had dinner here twice and breakfast once. For our first dinner I had the trout almondine ($18). It was really wonderful, on par with many I've had in good restaurants. My husband had linguine and meatballs ($15) which was pretty terrible. The pasta was overcooked and the sauce was watery and not covering the meatballs. We also had a chocolate layer cake ($4) that was really good. The service was really slow and inattentive, despite the fact that the restaurant was not crowded. Our meal took over an hour and we never received bread and butter like other tables. Our waitress had a bit of an attitude. Breakfast was pretty good for both of us. I had 2 eggs scrambled, toast and hashbrowns ($7). All the food was pretty good, although the toast came out dry and when I asked for butter, the waitress (the same one as the night before) looked at me like I had asked for foie gras. It took forever for her to bring it out and she said it was because it took the kitchen a long time to find some butter, which is bizarre to me - all the breakfast entrees come with toast so I can't imagine butter is an uncommon request. My husband had a fried egg, bacon, cheese and hashbrown sandwich on an English muffin ($6.50) that he really liked. Again, the place was fairly uncrowded but the service was terrible and our meal took over an hour with attitude. For our second dinner, I decided to order the trout again since it was so good the night before. It was much worse this time. The fish tasted very fishy - I guess they just reused the fish from the night before and it wasn't as fresh. The rice also tasted different and had a spiciness I didn't care for. I can't recall ever having the same meal from the same restaurant taste so different. My husband had pulled pork ($17), which he liked. The second dinner, we made the mistake of coming at 8 pm (they close at 9) and the place was mobbed. We had to wait forever to get seated and then it was at least 15 or 20 minutes before our waiter came over. All told, our meal took more than 1.5 hours. I fault our waiter less because, unlike our first waitress, he seemed extremely busy and frazzled and not just lazy. But they should hire more staff or something because it was pretty ridiculous. Come earlier for dinner if you can. I don't think the prices are as ridiculous as others do. Some things are pretty overpriced, like the $15 pasta and meatballs, but the breakfast foods and some of the dinner entrees are less than we'd pay in the bay area - and this is in the middle of a National Park so I would expect prices to be higher. read more

On a recent trip to SEKI, I had the opportunity to eat both dinner and breakfast here. We had a large group but they had no problem seating us immediately. The dinner menu is limited but they do have choices that satisfied both meat lovers and vegetarians. The dinner special was prime rib but unfortunately they were out of the special. I ordered NY Steak and was actually impressed with how good it really was. Other choices were pastas with meat or without and fried chicken. A few people ordered the Blackberry Pie with ice cream. Our server actually brought an extra bowl of ice cream just for 'the table'. As I mentioned, there was a large group and we each asked for our own check. This was not greeted with a roll of the eyes but a very pleasant 'not a problem'. Since service was so good we went back for breakfast. Again we had great food options, decent pricing, and wonderful service. Skip the oatmeal in camp if you are in the area and splurge on a hot fresh meal. This may be the only restaurant around, as mentioned by others, but the quality of the food and service is not mediocre or average as you might expect given the remoteness of the area. read more

If you are staying in Grant Grove, I suggest you bring your own provisions, Grant Grove restaurant has horrible food at a really expensive price. If that's not possible, head straight to the pizza parlor in the back of the restaurant and order yourself a pizza and all you can eat salad bar. It's cheaper, tastier, and more satisfying than anything on the regular restaurant menu. Since this is basically the only real restaurant in the area, I guess they can charge what they want, but it's essentially huge portions of junky food that takes forever to come out! The first night in town, I ordered the trout amandine based on the recommendation from the waitress, thinking I would be getting fresh local trout. After I ordered, I asked her if the trout was local, and she told me it was farmed trout from Chile! Lame...To make matters worse, the fish was overcooked and dry, and the rice it came with was mushy and bland. A dish that was close to $17! Gimme a break. The only saving grace about the meal was the side of veggies which seemed to be fresh - sauteed zucchini, squash, mushrooms and onion. Since we didn't bring our own food to cook for the trip, we had no choice but to eat at this restaurant night after night, after the trout, I had a meat lasagna which was much better than the trout, but still, it was just average. By the 3rd night we finally wised up and hit the pizza parlor, and it was pizza every night from then on... However, my biggest beef, is that all of the meals on the kids menu are pure junk! Mac and cheese, pizza, PB&J, chicken nuggets, frozen fish sticks...?! Come on now...It was even worse than the regular menu! We are in the middle of a Sequoia forest celebrating mother nature, trying to teach our kids about a healthy active lifestyle and there isn't a single menu item for kids that has a fresh fruit, vegetable, or whole grain in it? Take this review with a grain of salt bit this place sucks. First when my groupe enters the restraunt are party had a autistic kid when we look at the menu it is expenceve. Then we are told are meal will be out in five minuts but the person incharge of our meals went on break, so he past the order to a diffrent person then it takes 30m to just realise that they had to take our meals, then they tell me "It will be 2m" but it was five. We stopped here on our way back down the mountain from a overnight back country hike. Starving. We were seated promptly however it took at least 10-15 minutes for anyone to even come take a drink order. The bus boy, Ron, was actually the one who brought us water after we flagged him down. Our server, I believe her name was Davina, didn't come to even take our order or acknowledge that we were sitting at her table for a good 15 min. You could see the annoyed look on the people dining next to us when she delivered their salads with their main course. The man asked for a glass of water and no joke, it took 10 min. Another family had come in shortly after us and they too wait d 15 min at the rave before they were even noticed. Another blonde waitress spend a very long time talking to other guests on the patio. She was out there for a good 15 min and when she came back in she apologized to her tables and offered them free dessert for her delay. Once we finally got our food, the bacon cheeseburger we had ordered arrived cold. The pizza was just ok. Do not go here expecting a fancy meal. We didn't expect that going in. But what we did expect is a place that had reliable service, where you aren't forgotten about. Overall, I'll give the food a 5 and the service an absolute zero. It was awful. If anything, Ron, the bus boy, should be promoted to server because he was the most prompt worker there. The rest of them, what a joke. There was 2 other girls who were serving on the other side of the room who seemed to have their act together. But the rest of the staff needs some serious training. Disappointed. read more

I had a ridiculously small and sad spinach salad with only a few spinach leaves (probably from a bag) and a few walnuts and berries for $12.95. I decided to stop the experience here, as the rest of the menu looked really boring and expensive. I left this place hungry and feeling like I have been robbed. Unfortunately this seems to be one of the only option in the park. The food is actually pretty good, especially considering the place is in the middle of nowhere with very few other options. However, the service was terrible (nice people, just sloooowwwww) - management needs to have more servers on staff when the lodge is booked! The check-in desk is literally 5 feet from the restaurant; they should know exactly how many guests to expect for meals, and staff accordingly. The place was packed, and there were only two very overworked waiters. Anyway, we got: "Appetizers" (in quotes because everything we ordered actually all came out at once): -A cup of the potato soup (soup of the day) - not great; thin broth + greasy -Garlic fries - they're not kidding about the "mile high" in the description! HUGE portion. Heavy on the garlic, which I loved. -Caesar salad - good Main dishes: -"Namastanzaa" (I may have misspelled that) pizza (white sauce, garlic, artichoke hearts, fresh spinach) - very good! SUPER garlicky, so avoid this if you're not a garlic fan! It was also great as leftovers the next day on our hike. -Burger + side of fries - good; nothing fancy, just a solid burger with fresh toppings. Hit the spot. read more

The rooms were clean, comfortable, and exactly what you should expect from a national park. How hard is it to make tomato soup that doesn't taste or look like paste . There are visitors from all over the world visiting this park . What a sad reflection that they can't get a decent meal.
