I've eaten at this restaurant at least once a week every week since my last review. I've noticed a positive change in the service and the food is equally delicious. A few dishes I've tried that I recommend: The No Name The Happy Family Spicy Curry Vermicelli Noodles (#52) Lo Mein Coconut Curry Chicken Fingers, Wontons, and Dumplings I also love that their water is filtered. Back in 1996, I would have been super stoked on this place. But it's 17 years later and I'm not . The food is very reminiscent of "old-school" vegan fare. Super heavy on mock meat dishes. Not very creative or particularly healthy in my opinion. I got the hot n sour soup which was very good but had way too much fake pork type stuff in it. Other than that, it was delicious. I also got the shrimp lo-mien which was ok. I don't know why I ever order vegan seafood though. I guess I do so in hopes that it won't be the rubbery, squeaky, weird soy stuff that every place has but it always is. Got burned again. The portions are insanely large though so it is a good value for your money. The decor of the restaurant leaves much to be desired and also appears to be stuck in the mid-90's. There is plenty of room though so a large group would be accommodated well here. The service was good too. Friendly and efficient. One amusing that did happen on my visit here with friends though was that while we were eating, a picture fell off the wall next to us and landed in our food. One of the staff saw what happened and rushed over to take care of it. As he was rushing though, he knocked a glass off a table and shattered it all over the floor. Hahaha! We thought it was pretty funny and weren't put off that much by it. If fake meat type stuff is your thing, you'll probably be in to this place. If you're looking for more up to date, healthier vegan fare, skip this place and go to one of the many other vegan eateries in town. read more

One of my favorite restaurants has now disappointed twice! The last two times we ordered take out, they messed up and didn't give me the buckwheat noodles with tofu dish! Some lackluster dish with just vegetables showed up both times. My family got what they wanted, so that's the 2nd star. If they discontinued the dish, they should take it off the menu! read more

I bought a Groupon to try this place since it's a little out of my comfort zone - though it would be a little different. The place was spotless and comfortable. Service was impeccable. I asked for a recommendation since I was a little overwhelmed by the menu and the server's choice ended up being really good. There was a time when I would've given this place five stars. My friends and I kept the "Third Sunday" marked down, and I'd go there at least one other time per month. The no name is still good, but everything else has taken a turn for the worse. They pile on the veggies and sauce but skimp on the actual seitans. I am in love with this place!!!! I stumbled across Grasshopper several years ago when my nephew was in rehab at Franciscan Children's Hospital. So I had grabbed take out a couple times on my way home to the south shore because it is so good and couldn't resist bringing some home, even if for lunch the next day, since I don't live close by. Being a vegetarian, the one food I truly miss from when I used to eat meat is Chinese food. So imagine my excitement when I saw this vegan Chinese food restaurant. I talked about how good the food is to my non vegetarian sister so much that finally one day we decided to go there for lunch. Well, unbeknownst to me, the third Sunday of the month they have a buffet lunch and that happened to be the day we went. It turned out to be the perfect time to bring a non vegetarian out for vegan Chinese food because she was able to put a little bit of everything on her plate to see what she liked instead of ordering one plate off the menu. And I was happy to be able to try more than the "beef" and broccoli that I usually got from takeout. I find the prices to be great, the food delicious and I always feel happy and satisfied after eating. I only wish I lived closer so I could have it more frequently. I find the restaurant itself fairly outdated and drab inside. I think it would be a much better dining experience if it was updated, brighter, and maybe some music. read more

I think about the No Name more than is reasonable. A really tasty, crispy, chewy vegan dish (that even my fiance, who is very picky when it comes to vegan stuff, loves). The portions are really big - more than enough for sharing - and the prices are decent. The location is excellent, right off a couple bus routes and walkable from the B Line, with Fomu right next door if you want ice cream for dessert. One downside friends and I have noticed, though, is that they often don't give you all your food if you have a lot you want to take home. I think they only have one size box or something, so even if you have a ton of food left, you'll just get whatever fits into the box, which is a bummer. read more

Grasshopper has been my favorite Boston restaurant since high school. For many of us here on yelp, it was the place to go before a show on a Friday or Saturday night. As a vegan, this place is my dining mecca. I have often brought meat eaters here and they enjoyed the food saying they can tell its not meat, but its not bad and they would eat here again. My NYC friends like to say its sub-par because they have 20 or so restaurants just like Grasshopper, and although I agree some are better, Grasshopper is my favorite for sentimental reasons. For newbies and veterans alike, I recommend the chicken fingers. They are better than the real thing (or as my non vegan friends like to remind me, what I think chicken fingers tasted like.) The Delight soup is my favorite, although the hot and sour with wontons is most popular. With 70 something meal options plus a ton of soups and appetizers you can't go wrong with Grasshopper. Where else will you get vegan duck and shrimp? Exactly. Don't forget to get the cheesecake, its worth the bike ride in 98 degree summer heat and 20 degree winter lack thereof heat. read more

Extremely solid vegan restaurant with enough protein in their dishes to satisfy any carnivore. Yes, it's protein - not meat - it probably doesn't even need to be said, but reading the reviews it seems a lot of people are too keen to compare whether the dishes are sufficiently "meat-like" or not. They aren't, but that's not the point. There's a very rich Buddhist-inspired East Asian tradition of alternative protein menus and this restaurant stands excellently in that pedigree. If you don't like the culinary category, fine - but recognize that Grasshopper is at the top of the pack in doing what they do. Good food, good value, and pleasant service. Strange to think that the first time I went here was 10 years ago, I didn't know what vegan food was and I was still using MySpace. 10 years later and I just happens to live in the neighborhood. Grasshoppers are not in the food. (As far as I could tell, and I wasn't sure WHAT was in it.) I went in here with a friend and ordered the No-Name (imitation orange chicken in strips.) It was absolutely fantastic in taste! The texture was weird, but actually quite pleasing. I wouldn't necessarily say it tasted or felt "just like chicken," but it was delicious. The portion size was overwhelming. There were veggies galore under the towering heap of imitation meat. The meal was like $6.50 or $7, but I seriously should have shared it with someone else. At lunch I think the meal is even cheaper. SO MUCH FOOD! This place has startlingly strange, laughable decor. It doesn't matter, although the screaming bald eagle on our lamp was pretty great. Well it seems that there is not a need for another review of the Grasshopper but I'm gonna anyway. I'll keep it short and sweet. The food is all great and in itself worthy of my four star rating. The fresh vermicelli rolls are amazing and have been totally consistently amazing since I started going there 10 years ago. Nothing has changed. Which is why I am taking away a star from an otherwise perfect score. This place needs an overhaul. They tried to do some stick on tile thing to the floor themselves a couple of years ago and it did not work out. It looks like it's dirty now. The ceiling needs to be replaced. It's already been 12 years since we first met and I still love you as much as I did the first day. There is nothing I have ever found anywhere else in the world that compares to the absolutely huge menu of vegetarian delights. I recommend the - no name, sweet potato vermicelli, hot appetizer combination plate, the wonton soup... and everything else. If I lived next door I would go broke eating there three times a day. Fast and incredible service. I can call in an order and its ready as I drive by - or I can sit down, have a cup of tea and the food is already rolling out! The portions are huge! Choose your capacity choices carefully! An appetizer and soup are enough to make me take my entree home - which in itself is several meals for me! (Eat what will not reheat the best is my motto!) The soup prices are worth purchasing multiple for future lunches! The same waitress remembers me whether I was there twice in one week or not for a few months. She always know what I am going to order. I wish I knew her name. How uncomfortable to ask after all this time. For those of you who complain about the tofu... ITS TOFU - IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE TEXTURE OF TOFU, ORDER ANOTHER PROTEIN! THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER OPTIONS! Thank you for the grasshopper, I kinda realize how meats are great food at least for me. Even though I like the idea of cooking fake meats with using Tofu and beans, I want to enjoy each ingredient's with their best taste. For example, I don't need fake beef if it is used by beans or something smell bad. I want to eat that ingredient with best cooking way for that just like boiling beans. Pretty good vegan fare. Tries to not serve too much gluten meat, but fails; some of the items like Barbequed Pork is entirely unconvincing. A little too greasy and rich for me; you might wanna ask for the sauce on the side (for the most part) Inexpensive, huge portions. Try the "deliight" soup. I could barely smell the food over the pretensiousness and tight black clothing. Thankfully I wasn't sober, so it was tolerable, but the food was all wet. This place is good for what it is. We ordered a bunch of food, and everything I tried, I really liked. For me, I got the number 62, the seitan (beef style) with curry. It was great for me. The No Name is plentiful, but insanely sweet. I could only eat so much of it. The appetizer sampler was good, and the lo mein was delicious. Their juice drinks are epic. Grasshopper is hit or miss, I get it. But still, I think the food from this place is awesome. If you want to have an awesome eating experience from Grasshopper, here's what you do: 1) Order the "chicken" fingers for an appetizer (deep fried golden delicious tofu tenders that are sweet, crunchy, and mouth watering) with lots of sweet and sour sauce. 2) Order the No Name for dinner with brown rice (tiny tasty nuggests of deep friend gluten with veggies in a sweet sauce, oh my god I have dreams about this dish). 3) Take it all home to go and eat it in front of the TV in your underwear (eating in the restaurant blows, it's dirty, the decor is withered and dumpy, the seating is terrible, the waitstaff are unattentive and unfriendly, and I've seen bugs there on numerous occasions). read more

I used to go to Grasshopper aaaaall the time. Back in my vegetarian days, it was my favorite restaurant. The downfall is the lack of parking. We would circle Cambridge Street and the back roads for almost a half an hour to find a spot, so it's best to visit by bus or train. You'll get to the food faster. The Grasshopper experience - or my experience was always the same. We'd almost always get the same waitress. She never wrote a thing we ordered down, but to her credit, she'd get it right 95% of the time. I also learned early on not to stray from the basics. My friends and I would split the "chicken" fingers; I'd order the wonton soup and the No Name and my friend would get a coconut bean shake, the hot and sour soup and the vegetable lo mein. Order all of these things - you won't be disappointed. And everyone's right about the No Name - it's the best thing on the menu. I remember it used to be better though - the gluten chunks used to be a lot bigger. Then one day the pieces got smaller...I realize this is a moot point. It's still yummy. Those toasted sesame seeds really do the trick. If you bring a vegetarian food sceptic, for the love of god, don't allow them to order on their own! Next thing you know, they'll have a dish of cold buckwheat noodles covered in peanut sauce with a look on their face that says "I knew this wouldn't be any good." Check out what the grass-eaters are eating-it's good!!! 3.5 Feed; pretty fresh and fun. Atmosphere; a little shabby, scratched out seats and floor, kinda cold, no music; comical. Speedy service, good Allston people watching, casual quiet, and large fish tank with luscious goldfish almost make up for it. Workers yelling loudly in their native vegetarian tongue. Or is it? I recommend, on the reals, the fresh fresh seaweed salad, incredibly tasty, and naturally electric green sea goodness with not too much fuss. If you never had seaweed before, have no fear, the texture and flavor really isn't all that wierd-it's just good greens. You can feel your body's iron being replenished! I just had a feeling this place knew seaweed! Supposedly Grasshopper's seaweed is Japanese farm-raised-well, it tastes quality. It is served on a bed of iceberg-cute-sea meets land arrangement. But mark my words, slender vegans-there is Maria's Creamy Italian in the seaweed's bed of iceberg lettuce! I know because it is the dressing I grew up with in my L.I. home and ate exclusively for my first decades. I think the Creamy Ital, is a nice, absurd, yet shady touch-just wanted to let the Nayonaise crowd know! You're welcome! Can you believe it yelpers, that's partly why I don't go out to eat much these days; you can only trust yourself! I got the ginger onion tofu-nice job, pretty much just what I wanted! The tofu is so soft and sexy, the ginger and onion shine as the only and main flavor event, and sliced vegetable are lovely and satisfying. Maybe a little too much oil. I thought I had mistakenly ordered a noodle dish but it turns out it was some taro-like vegetable cut into udon noodle-like, super sauce absorbent threads! Yaye, vegetables! Love how you sneak em in, every which way, Grasshopper! My friend got the tofu curry-which he enjoyed, but I thought was kind of weird and off, with a sweet metallic aftertaste-it's just not a curry place! But that's ok. There is plenty to choose from! I think I will stay away from the highly featured "Satan" fake meat. Didn't I read that that fake meat stuff is full of nasty preservatives, sugar, and harmful chemicals, that are hard to process? Forget that, I'd rather kill animals, all due respect, oh Buddha belly, one love. Oh, tainted love... My boyfriend was confused by the pictures of animals above each table. He thought in this vegan restaurant it would be cool to order the animal in the picture above our table. We could get it in the Satan/Seitan version- baby and mamma hugging giraffes. I just wish they would advertise publicly (perhaps a shared advertisement with the other vegetarian/vegan restaurants around Greater Boston - in other locations) for special vegetarian events (e.g. Great American Meatout, World Vegetarian Day, International Vegan Day, National Heart Month, Gandhi's Birthday, etc. But perhaps they need no more customers, but the word could get out, and they could expand into 2, 3, or 5, or even 10 more locations. 617-254-8883 is programmed into my cellphone. My first few experiences with Grasshopper were very positive. Good food, cheap price, and very accommodating space; however, I advise against eating here if you prefer a healthy establishment. As a vegan, I am saddened to write this review because they are a staple in the vegetarian community but here goes: 5 weeks ago I ordered the vermicelli spring rolls and a wonton soup. I always order the rolls and this was my first time ordering the soup. I usually get hot and sour soup. The wonton soup was delicious. About four spoonfuls in, I noticed a little black critter floating in my soup. I returned the soup with the bug/fly in it and they removed it from my bill. About a week ago, I went back. I had been there about two times in between this moment and 5 weeks ago. As I ate my fried rice with shrimp, I noticed a metallic sliver in the rice. I removed it and told the waitress. She took it and went back into the kitchen. They removed it from the bill and told me it was a piece of the brush that cleans the wok. I hadn't eaten all day but I kept going until I found a few strands of hair wrapped around a few clumps of rice. I showed the waitress. She says, I'm sorry, and I can't believe it. Again, this is good, inexpensive food, but I don't know if I can eat here anymore. read more

The good thing about being a local in her thirties is that you remember the history of a neighborhood and it's attractions. Being a vegetarian, like so many other reviewers, I want this place to be good so that I have another resteraunt option with my limited diet. Unfortunately, I remember when this place opened.: The food was yummy and healthy, the waitstaff was friendly, the atmosphere was clean, peaceful, even zen-like. Each table had a green table cloth with chop sticks and a very smooth rock (in zen fashio). It must have changed hands over the years, because it has changed 180 degrees. The table clothes are gone, not particularly clean. Last time I went was with a friend. We orded 5 dishes between us. Soup, two appetizers and two entrees. They were all bland to just bad, with the exception of the pricy dish of gluten. I think it was one of the specials that night for like $11. Then, we were basically given the bum's rush. It was starting to get a little busy and we got the check before we were even done eating. Then, the oler woman there (owner, I guess), as if they weren't curt and rude before, just as we are giving her our money says "Are you done, because I NEEEEEEED!." I am not exaggerating. I wish I had a voice recording device on my phone so I could up load it for you all on a wav file. I am NEVER going there again. As rude as they are at Mai Thai, at least it looks clean, the food is descent. Buddha's Delight in China town is good. Once you get over how dirty and slimey the ex-porn theater is, it is warming to have friendly and polite people wait on you. The smoothies as Buddha's are good too. read more

I have 3 pieces of advice: 1. Get the "No Name" from the lunch special. Otherwise, it is too much food and you pay a lot extra for the gigantic serving. 2. Wear a blindfold before entering the restaurant. Its grimy-ness is extremely unappetizing. The green is tough to take but not as tough as the greasy, finger-printed front door, unwiped surfaces or piles of old boxes and bags behind their counter near the door. 3. Wait about 10 seconds between the server greeting you and ordering or even speaking. A woman from the kitchen will appear within that 10 second slot with a loud "HELLO" (and a smile) to ask what you want. She did it to me and to the 2 other customers who came in behind me. You will be greeted twice, so wait for it. read more

This was my first time going to a vegetarian restaurant, especially to a Buddhist-friendly one. There is only street parking offered so it may be hard to get here. When you walk in, it feels very small but intimate/romantic (I went here at night). The menu is huge so it is a bit overwhelming on what to eat, there is appetizers, noodles, seafood, beef/chicken(all fake) seitans, desserts, and their specials. Food: Tried the Vegi-Vietnamese Pizza, the No-name, and the Seitan. The vegi pizza tasted interesting, it was like a quesadilla with vegetables in-between. I would order it again. The no-name was something like general gao chicken and it tasted very good. The seitan was bought out in a black clay pot and it was very saucy. Service: The waitstaff is very nice and attentive. When we were ordering, they asked us if we wanted to take out ginger, garlic or scallions out ( which is one of few herbs some Buddhists can't really eat) so that was very considerate. I came here once years ago and thought it was amazing food across the board. Today, I ordered a spicy lemongrass beef plate that came with peppers and mushrooms. It was not spicy at all, but the flavors were all there and the beef was delicious (I wish there had been more!) The food came in less than 10 minutes, and complimentary tea and water, can it can any better than that!? Yes, yes it can. Since I like tofu I decided to try the deep fried tofu and I could not have been happier. The pastry was fluffy and thick, the tofu was cooked well, and the dish came with an apple flavored dipping that accentuated the deep fried tofu. My friend also ordered a fried rice dish and she really liked it. I wound up paying for the two dishes and one appetizer and the meal was less than $26, and we both had food to take back home. Will definitely be back here to check out their buffet the third Sunday of next month! read more

I went to the Grasshopper with a vegan and a vegetarian, myself being the only carnivore of our group, and was at the very least happy that my veggie/vegan friends finally had a menu that they could order lots of stuff from. I wasn't *too* impressed, but my friends left happy, which was what really mattered to me. I thought that my soup and noodle dish were both equally bland, though the greens I ordered were delicious. The vegan dish my one friend ordered tasted pretty good, though he did comment that he certainly had plenty better elsewhere and that he felt the food was awfully chewy and somewhat hard to manage. The vegetarian dish apparently was the big winner - and the veggie out of the bunch has returned many, many times. All in all, a good experience. I don't go to Grasshopper all that much unless I am in that area already and want greens or veggies, but hey, nothing wrong with having a go-to for some sweet take-out vegetarian delights! read more

I've been here several times, and it's generally hopping. Some meals I've loved; others not so much. It's a decent place to get vegan food and has a fairly extensive menu. It's always nice to go into a restaurant and know you can order anything on the menu because it's all vegan. Omnivores don't get this. Alas, I've digressed. I've had the No Name, which I like, but it always ends up tasting so sweet to me that I swear I will never get it again. (And I stick to my word, ordering something salty on my next visit. But then I think that was way too salty, so I swear I won't get it again and on my next visit I'm back to sweet.) The No Name IS tasty, but I can only appreciate it's flavor up until the point where I go into a sugar coma. That's frustrating. I've also had the House Special Nest (Crispy Taro Nest with Assorted Vegetables, Veggie-Chicken, Beef, Seafood). It's really good, but salty to the max. The cheesecake is pretty good, as is the veggie pork chop appetizers, albeit a bit too salty for me. Are you seeing a pattern here? I recommend the avocado shake. Seriously. Sounds gross. The only draw here for meat eaters like Andrea B. and myself is the portion size. We came with our Living Social deal in tow and gorged on mountains of seitan and tofu that never quite hit the spot. Even the famous "No Name" failed to leave an impression. Still, I managed to eat comfortably for two days on my leftovers, and that, my friends, is no easy feat. You either love this place, or hate it. I don't think there is really any middle ground. As a rule, I WANT to love a vegan/vegetarian place.... I can't do that here. I went once, and haven't even wanted to give it a second chance.... I cringe at the thought. My dad, who tries to give vegan places a chance, because of my sister, bro-in-law, and myself..... REALLY hated this place. He said his meal tasted like dirty dish water.... it looked it too :( Yuck. For myself, my meal was unmemorable, for the most part. What I DO recall is stringy fake-meat that was tough and chewy, without much flavor. Not bad! I'll come back here for nice, greasy Chinese food that isn't factory farmed and unethically produced. The fried tofu dumpling appetizer is crispy and delicious, the skin of the dumpling was a little too thick for my liking but the filling was nice and crumbly, some combination of tofu, soy, and veggies. Entree-wise, I tried both the vermicelli with vegi-pork and spring roll, and the chicken seitan with mushrooms and scallions. I liked the chicken seitan a bit better; the sauce they used to saute the veggies and seitan together was more flavorful and tasted more "Chinese" than the vegi-pork in the vermicelli, which was a bit rubbery. Overall though, both entrees were quite good. Disclaimer: don't come here if you think the meat will taste like meat. It just tastes like more delicious tofu, which is a-ok in my book. The decor is certainly a little rundown, especially since the windows seem tinted on the outside as to make the inside seem incredibly dark and sketchy. Otherwise, I saw no problem with the venue - just a regular Chinese restaurant, a little greasy but that's how you feel most at home! Reasonably priced too, most entrees are less than $10. I'll be back for takeout or eat-in someday! read more
