I grew up in the neighborhood and my parents would take me to the Grateful Bread almost every weekend, with an excellent selection of delicious and healthy bagels and breakfast/lunch/brunch foods as well as the just-the-way-its-supposed-to-be Hot coffee, homey atmosphere, and beautiful art displayed, I have to say the Grateful Bread is by far one of the best cafe/bakery's I have ever been to. I'd planned to go to Top Pot, but by 10:30 they were pretty low on stock. Already hungry, and not wanting to travel too far, my boyfriend and I decided to travel across the street to Grateful Bread. We both ordered a couple of breakfast items and a couple of coffees. The coffees took a while... maybe because of the service, maybe because of the other orders, but just know you might be standing around for a bit. Taking in the clientele they seemed to be mostly a "granola" crowd. Perhaps the name, or the local, organic nature of the place led them here. If that's important to you, then maybe this place is for you. Me, I'm just about the taste. If I'm not making it then I rarely think about what's going into it. So on the subject of taste... I bit into my cheese danish, it was pretty delicious. Like cheesecake on a croissant delicious. Maybe a touch too much lemon in the drizzle, but that's picking nits. Then I taste my rooster comb (it's like a bear claw with almond paste they inform me) and it tastes just like the danish. They used the same croissanty base for both... and I can't taste the almond paste. My boyfriend bites into his cinnamon roll, and it tastes the same and is shockingly low on cinnamon filling. Thankfully, the quiche did not taste the same, but it wasn't anything special. If you go in for a pastry there is no need to buy more than one thing... and I would go with the danish, because at least the cream cheese was prominent. read more

They offer a variety of bagels, pastries, breads, sandwiches, rotating soups and even quiche. Service has always been fine and the breads have always been good. Overall, a solid place to stop by if you're looking for some carbs. They also have a half off shelf of day old breads. I really want to like Grateful Bread. Actually, I want to love it. But the only thing consistent about this place is how inconsistent it is. In my four visits, once it's been great, once good, and twice awful. The soup has always been tasty, and their muffins are great -- just the right moistness and not too sweet -- but it's the sandwiches where they fail. My first bad experience involved fake cheese (apologies to all those American cheese lovers, but when ads for cheese slices involve boasting about their milk-to-oil ratio, it's not actual cheese): I ordered swiss, my first bite tasted like rubber, I took it back to the counter and found out they had recently switched to swiss-flavored American. I said, "It tastes awful, like rubber." The response? "Huh, well, I'll pass that on." No offer to exchange or refund, nothing. I was too shocked to reply. I threw the sandwich away. The second time, a great sandwich (switched back to real cheese, yeah!) on wet, doughy bread, which the girl behind the counter remade immediately, with a smile and a free cookie (hence 3 stars instead of two). My hopes soared! Then a takeout sandwich on the way back from the airport: swiss, cucumber, lettuce, and mayo, on wheat. When I got home, I discovered havarti and cucumber on wheat. Make that a full 2 1/2 inches of layered cucumbers on wheat so wet from cuc juice it was falling apart. And once slice of the wrong cheese. One slice! Hey, when you're vegetarian, you need a good cheese/vege balance. No mayo. No lettuce. No wonder, when the girl put the box on the counter, she called out "Cucumber sandwich!" with such a superior smirk. I'd smirk at me too if I ordered that sandwich. So it seems to me that it totally depends on who happens to be working that day, if you'll get five slices of cheese or one, or if they'll fix your sandwich problem, or ignore you. Like the other reviewers, I find the parking to be a pain, and the line to be haphazard and a bit confusing, but I think it's worth it if you're lucky enough to happen upon a good sandwich day. read more

Service - They're efficient and quick. They're not overly friendly but polite. Food/coffee - their food is very tasty and their coffee is good. I always get drip and refills are 50 cents which I find very agreeable. Price - I think its very agreeable. My girlfriend thought their breakfast sandwich was a little expensive but we were talking 50 cents to a dollar more than she thought it was worth so it wasn't egregious. Based on my mediocre people watching skills I think the tall skinny guy with dreads is more of a manager and he seems to be on his game and is very customer service oriented. read more

I can't count how many times I've been to the grateful bread, but its definitely been enough to say that the other customers are the worst part. Obviously most of them have never worked in customer service and don't realize you get what you give. There's like a million people in and out of that place on the weekends and for some reason others don't realize how annoying it is to ask the wait staff if everything put on the counter is theirs. When they call an order for nancy and your name is scott, it's not hard to figure out it isnt yours. Honestly I avoid this place if I drive by and I see a line out the door. Obviously if you have to wait 20 minutes to order your not going to get everything quickly. I'm more of an evening customer because everyone is friendly, there's tables to sit at, (usually) no screaming babies, and I get my food quickly. My only suggestion for the managers is to not hire so many high school kids, they get way too overwhelmed when it's busy and tend to run around asking everyone else if they can help them instead of tending to growing line of hungry customers! read more

Wow...I don't know where to start with this place since I am absolutely in love with it. I happened to hear about Grateful Bread while picking up some sub-par scones at the Whole Foods on 63rd. The guy next to me listened to my lament and recommended this place. Needless to say in my never-ending quest for the perfect scone I decided to check it out. All I can say is thank heaven for this place. It is definitely a neighborhood joint and if you come and sit here in the early morning or afternoon you will be bombarded with school kids running about (personally doesn't bother me). The tables are great and the energy rocks in here. Now for the food... You must, must, must order some scones. I love all four varieties (currant, chocolate chip, apricot, and raspberry) but I always go for the currant first. The cookies are great and so are the bear claw-esque pastries. I haven't tried anything else but I'm sure it is all great. The caprese panini is heaven and all their soups are usually phenomenal. The bagels are just meh and I recommend the place on 55th for the closest to a NY style bagel in Seattle. Please come to Grateful Bread, bring the Times (b/c I can then live vicariously through you), and chill for awhile with a f-in awesome pastry and lunch. read more

We used to live near here and I worked in Wedgwood for years so I have been to GB several times. Mostly for a quick snack for the kids, in that regards it's great. We like their pastries and real fruit smoothies. But if you're wanting them to make you a sandwich? Think again! They take FOREVER...I went during what I thought would be an off-peak time (after the usual lunch crowd) but it was packed with the Eckstein crowd so not a good place to chill on your lunch break from a daycare center, lol. I ordered a sandwich and it took so long I had to scarf it before getting back to work, no fun, it was $8 for a sandwich not much better than you can buy up the street at Subway or Safeway for much less. So for sandwiches save you money and walk up to Subway for a $5 footlong! But I must say their Challah is very good! Much better than Noahs in U. Village! read more

i lived 2 blocks away for 15 years. it has changed over the years. the bagels used to have a distinctive 'so-fat-there's-barely-a-hole-in-the-middle' design. but the bread is always good and i've always loved the coffee. there were cute old people who would argue politics every sunday morning. occasionally they'd have good art on the walls. if they had live music it was rarely any good (imho). i spent many days working remotely from here, and never had a problem with the staff, but i'll say that it seems the staff has turned over a lot in the recent year. the thing i would very often get for a lunch is this: get the grilled chicken panini, but sub the tomato pesto for basil pesto. it used to be made that way and was heavenly. i'd avoid the quiches, they're a bit 'homely'. but practically everything else has been yummy. soups are awesome for a rainy day. read more

My favorite local place to grab coffee and a bite to eat. Everything is so fresh and delicious! There is not one time I have tried something here and not liked it..from their stacked turkey sandwiches, to their yummy homemade oatmeal raisin cookies. The baked goods are 4.5 stars but the service is so bad it takes them down to a 2 star store. Truly its too bad, to have such good spinach/feta croissants and yet have such sucky service. With the economy the way it is, buying a $4 baked good is really a luxury and if there not going to be courteous and polite, I'll go elsewhere. They also flaunt there political views a little too much at times. Let me drink my coffee and eat my bagel and get away from the rest of the city, not marinate in it. If I could give them zero stars, I would. I've been going to this place with friends after church nearly every week for several years. If not for the convenient location, I'm sure we would go elsewhere. The service is extremely slow, especially if you're foolish enough to order anything other than a simple baked good. Order a panini and you'll wait half an hour for it. Their salads, soups and sandwiches are also rather overpriced. Recently, my doctor diagnosed me as gluten sensitive. It is essentially impossible to eat anything resembling a real meal here if you can't eat gluten. On more than one occasion, I've had the audacity to ask whether that day's soup options contain gluten (because they were varieties which are normally made without gluten). Not only do they consistently reply that the soup contains gluten, but they are haughty about it, like I shouldn't even be there. You'd think I was besmirching their bakery with my filthy gluten-free self. It is quite clear that they not only don't give a f**k about GF people, but actively dislike us. I've resorted to bringing in food from home. I dare them to say something to me about it. read more

Unfortunately, decent coffee and croissant just don't make up for incredibly lousy (borderline offensive) service. After reading the reviews below, I guess I'm not the first person who's walked in an "inconvenienced" the staff by existing. Why take names for coffee orders if you're not going to use them? I ordered a tall americano and got BARKED at by the barista when I checked a cup for my name..."not yours" she sputtered. We love the vegan options, though wish there were more! Their breads and bagels are great, and the few vegan treats they sell are really yummy (though the buzz bar just got smaller and more expensive, which was disappointing)! Greatful bread is my go-to place for food it's almost always really good! Lately they have lowered quality sometimes my bagels have raw parts or are over cooked. I have been getting bagels for a while now and this is the worst it's been. Also the food is REALLY pricy so unless you have $20 with you it's hard to have a decent sized meal. A cookie is about $3 but Starbucks and Safeway just down the street are much cheaper and just a little lower quality. Usually on the weekends the lines are WAY TOO LONG and I have to wait for atleast 10 minutes because they don't use their second cash register (it works). Most workers seem satisfied with the job bust others don't and are very rude and disrespectful to the buyers. Most of the plastic wear is compostable but also very annoying because they melt snap and squeak. Overall it's a pretty good bakery if you have tolerance for food with impurities and have lots of money on hand, also aren't in a hurry because the workers definitely take their time. read more

In fact I'd say that Top Pot located there because people in the area have beaucoup bucks and are used to procuring bakery items at the corner of 35th and 70th. Ditto goes for Starbucks that moved into the neighborhood right about the same time just a block north on 35th. You can only eat so many donuts ... GB has yummy bagels, ok cookies, and really good bread. My family likes the struan. It is grainy with millet and poppy seeds but light too - perfect for sandwiches or toast. A typical order for us is sesame bagels with cream cheese not toasted, large loaf of struan sliced, and a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie. The brownie with mint frosting is very good too but maybe a little decadent and pricey for everyday. read more

Cute little bakery in Seattle. I ordered a vanilla steamer (yummy) and veggie quiche. I guess someone misplaced the veggie quiche, and I ended up getting the Mediterranean. I should add that I'm not a huge fan of artichokes. I do like how vegetable heavy the quiche was, making it seem healthier. The eggs were okay, and were well seasoned. It's not far from my work and I come here when I want a change in my coffee routine (they make an excellent latte) or when I'm in the mood for one of their fantastic sandwiches. They have good vegetarian options - various quiches, flat-breads, and a delicious hummus sandwich. Sandwiches are substantial and come with a pickle! The Grateful Bread is a fine bakery with quality breads and solid bagels. Coffee (Cafe Vita) is quite good and although the pastries aren't quite my style, other people seem to enjoy them just fine. I come here on Sunday mornings and it can get insanely busy in here. Lots of parents bring their tykes along and that sometimes adds to the chaos. Over the years the staff has turned over quite a bit and service has varied accordingly. At the time of this writing, I can say that I like the current crop; they're a little slow but generally quite friendly. That could change, however! Grateful bread also has bags set aside from their previous days' bakes for discounted prices which is nice if you cant satisfy your gluten fix with just one confectionary. ;) The only bad experience I've had was a couple times when I requested an alternative milk vs dairy, which just doesn't fly for someone with lactose intolerance. Been there many times and I am pleasantly surprised each time I go. Great sandwiches, soup, and cinnamon rolls. Hard to go wrong with the food, but they don't even pretend to offer service. Be prepared to bus your own table, and hope that the wrong employee doesn't get control of the music-not saying that it is bad music, just that one time I took my visiting parents there for an early breakfast, and they had the music at Night Club levels. When I asked about it, I was told it was some employee's birthday. Call me old, but loud house music at 7 am sounds like a horrible present. Pun intended. read more
