When I tried a bagel from this place, it tasted like bread my mom used to make by hand 40 years ago. I come here at least once a week! My go to is usually a bagel! The bagels are always the most tastiest. I also have a weakness for their delicious pastries. This little bread shop on the corner of 35th NE and 70th is one of Seattle's hidden gems. From fresh loaves to sandwiches to pastries and even cookies, they will give you whatever your carb-hungry self desires. Did I mention it's organic? Who would've thought something as simple as a butter croissant can taste so good?! I was literally "mmm"-ing the entire time I was eating it and ate it as slow as I can, similar to those exaggerated commercials of people enjoying their food. I'm hooked. I wish I would have bought more for the road because I'm actually craving some more as I write this review. Delicious ass bread, I would definitely come back for more! Their double baked almond croissants are ama-za-zing! I'd come here just to order that. I got 2 turkey melt paninis. Not sure what happened here but they ended up using their focaccia bread on that panini (I told them to remove the 2 previous sandwich order, but maybe I needed to be clear that I didn't want to use thick bread on a panini). I was a bit disappointed that they used thick bread because the whole point of a panini is to bite into a crispy sandwich. I am most grateful for the Grateful Bread. Their breads and pastries are delicious (the mint brownies!), and they have the best challah (on Fridays). Also great soups, salads, sandwiches. I am sure their coffee is good also, but haven't tried it. Nice, down-home place. Chris, one of the owners, also is the awesome baker. I used to live in the neighborhood and would frequent this spot for their fantastic breads and pastries. Even now, having moved, this is still my go to bagel spot, which I happily drive out of my way for. Honestly, I think they have the best bagels in Seattle. Or at least the best that aren't exorbitantly priced. They have the absolute perfect chewy (but not in a way that hurts your jaw) yet soft texture. I do probably bi-monthly bagel runs, eating them fresh the first couple days and then freezing the rest and heating them up when I want one (usually every morning tbh). They heat up phenomenally well! Their challah is also amazing, which I feel like is hard to find here. I've had ones from other bakeries here (*cough* grand central *cough*) that just taste like normal white bread and are extremely dry. Grateful Bread's challah has the sweet, eggy flavor challah is supposed to have, and is always soft and moist. It also makes great french toast if you manage to have any leftover the next day, but I usually don't. I haven't had too many of their pastries, but they do a cinnamon roll made of croissant dough that is to die for. My boyfriend also really likes their chocolate croissants, so I'm gonna guess anything they make with that croissant dough is a winner. read more

Good part: I've loved Grateful Bread for the last decade. Their Ravenna loaf is some of the best sandwich bread in town, even with SeaWolf and others opening. Their muffins are a solid A-, particularly the Morning Glory which is like if you made a healthy carrot cake without frosting. Bummer part: Since they reopened the indoor dining after covid, the vibes have been pretty bad. There is one nice person out of the five or so working at a time. Other folks huff at you for asking for a plate. The bagels, while never the star, have gone downhill to flavorless bread. Was really disappointed with a club sandwich I ordered from here today. Advertised to come with turkey, ham, and bacon but I'm not sure there was anything more than ham on it? It was such a small amount of meat, too, that I couldn't really decipher. Giving it a 3-star because my wife's wrap looked substantial and I've had good sandwiches here before, but this isn't the first time I've been dissatisfied. Grateful Bread is consistently good at just about everything! I love the turkey sandwich and the pizza bagels. Also the regular bagels are amazing and so fresh they don't need to be toasted. We love the cream cheese so much we always buy extra to have at home. And the quiche is delicious. Try the mediterranean and the potato bacon. Not only are the flavors good but that crust is perfect! I often get a whole one for my family to have on a weekend. As for pastries, they have the very best pumpkin muffin in the world and a really damn good blueberry muffin. I've tried the cookies and other sweets and none disappointed but I keep going back to those two muffins. The coconut macaroon covered in chocolate is really good too. The coffee is excellent and always comes out piping hot and fast. I get a basic americano and the quality of the coffee really comes through. I enjoy the service here a lot. They're efficient and kind. One guy is super serious but perfectly nice and respectful. There is often a line at lunch but they handle it really well. Lastly, I'm a challah fanatic and this is the best I've ever tasted. It is not at all dry and has a great flavor. It stays fresh a long time too. We buy at least one loaf every week. The other breads are also good (especially slathered with butter and dipped in their tasty soups). Some, like the ravenna, have sort of a chewy quality that I like but others may not. What a great place! I stopped in when I was in the neighbourhood and picked up a baguette, a couple of cookies, and a ham + cheese croissant for my MIL. The counter help was very nice and patient as I made my choices (read: kept adding things to my order). We enjoyed the baguette as part of dinner and it was absolutely delicious. I warmed it for a few minutes in the oven and we ate it with some brie. Decadent! The cookies were disappointing. I got the vegan chocolate chip one for myself and the snickerdoodle for my husband. His cookie was hard, almost like it cooled on the baking sheet. My cookie was just dense and didn't have the best flavour. I don't know if I'd get those again. Cookie woes aside, I would return to try some of their other breads. Before the baguette caught my eye, some of the other loaves looked tempting. I might check out one of their macaroons and pick up a danish for my MIL who's fond of morning treats with black coffee. They have their own small parking lot that's consistently full but there are several spaces marked for 15 minutes only, conceivably for folks to hop out, grab their things, and then continue on. read more

Love this place so much. My favorite is the Rustic Italian loaf. Really appreciate that they will slice it for you, and a great price. Customer service is always quick and pleasant. The reason I gave it three stars is that some of the other items on the menu are hit or miss (if you aren't ordering a bagel or croissant). I have tried the molasses cookie on two different occasions and it has had a burnt flavor to it and is lacking in the molasses-ginger flavor. I got a cinnamon roll for the first time today and it was not good. The cream cheese frosting was flat and there was almost zero cinnamon flavoring and filling in the center of the cinnamon roll. I will definitely continue to come to the bakery but will stick to the bread and bagels. read more

Don't sleep on the Spinach Feta Croissant. I got one this morning for breakfast along with cinnamon as a treat for my coworker and I was so impressed with how tasty the croissant was! The spinach croissants have a satisfactory amount of filling. The corned beef reuben is good, but for $7.95, I expect more meat. This is a great bakery and cafe to get some studying done and to enjoy the nice weather. I bike here this past weekend and loved the outdoor seating area. It's open air, but covered, so since it was pretty warm and sunny outside, I appreciated the shade, but also the ability to enjoy the nice temperature. There's free wifi, which is awesome for studying, and it's also an xfinity hotspot, so if one doesn't work I could just switch to the other. The girl at the counter was quite friendly, although she seemed a little new, but the other person behind the counter was able to answer my question about one of the pastries. They also have a day-old section with 50% off pastries and 30% off breads. It's a bummer that the breads are only 30% off, since other places have everything that's a day old as 50% off, but I still got a baguette. It was a little chewy and dry, as is to be expected with being a day old, but still delicious! I also got a twice-baked almond croissant, and it was wonderful. Flaky and crispy with lots of almond flavor. I'll definitely be returning here! read more

I came in and spent a moment being confused as to what line to stand in. Then I figured out one was for coffee re-fills (only) and the other was for everything else. I decided to get an Italian Soda. By the time I got to the cashier, however, I had also been seduced by a fruity strudel. They had a lot of different cookies, croissants, other baked things, sandwiches, and I think some soups.... but that strudel was what caught my eye. Everything was served up very quickly. The Italian Soda was good.... pretty much like every other one I've ever had. The strudel was finger-licking-good. Mmmmm. This was my go-to spot while living in the Wedgwood neighborhood. It is the epitome of a cozy, local hangout with a tight-knit feel. You literally can't go wrong with whatever you end up choosing to eat- my partner and I would play a game where one of us would just say "sweet" or "savory" and we would go in and choose at random! The other key feature for us is the covered, heated indoor patio section where we could sit in a corner and bring our dog. I can't fathom trying to park in the lot on a busy weekend as I always walked but there is a ton of close by neighborhood parking if you're willing to walk an extra 3 minutes to earn that cinnamon roll ;) read more

One of the best things that came with moving to Ravenna was Grateful Bread!! Their bagels are one of the best in town, and staff are always nice and friendly. Here's what I'll tell you about Grateful Bread. The food is great. It's fresh, organic, and often local. They serve all of my favorite things: bread, bagels, salads, soups, and coffee. I haven't ordered anything I didn't like. Everything is really well made. There's not a place in Seattle I visit more often than GB. No, it's not the best service (not because they're rude, but maybe not particularly cheery). Yes, my order has been incorrect many times. And yes, because of that, I understand why people would be frustrated with GB. But I don't know. I'm pretty tired of this bizarre expectation we have of people in the service industry to insincerely treat customers like royalty. The more I've gone there, the more they have recognized me and the more we have built up a rapport - you know, like normal human beings would interact. I can appreciate that if a GB employee is asking me a question, it's because they genuinely want to know the answer. As far as my order being wrong, it's usually something small and it's when the place is packed and everyone is working hard to move people through the line. Again, they're human beings. Just check your order before you leave and they'll happily fix any mistake. Back to the food. It's always fresh and leaves me feeling good. The soups and salads are full of veggies. I recently started a new job nearby and drove by this place, noticing the colorful artwork. I scoped out the Yelp reviews and noticed the comments about a line often forming. So had to come check it out. First, no line. But the inside was warm and welcoming. It's a place you will want to linger at. I find most coffee and bakery places lack a living room type warmth, which I enjoy. I ordered the pizza bagel, smoked salmon quiche and ham and cheese croissant. The quiche was really good. Soft, creamy filling with a subtle salmon taste. And a crisp crust. Too often quiche crust is soggy. This crust was really good. Pizza bagel was delicious. Freshly made, still warm and such nice tomato and pizza taste. And the ham and cheese croissant was a great balance of generous ham and cheese. The puff pastry surrounding it was crisp and flaky. Again, hard to ma a good filling without the pastry becoming soft and doughy. This was really good. I'm embarrassed to say I only meant to eat one item and save the rest. I ate everything and was full for a long time. Want to come back to try their soup and more pastries and buy a loaf of bread. Not really a big baked goods fan, as so many are subpar. Thank god for fellow yelpers because I thought I was just overreacting to the pile that they call service here. After reading up here, this past morning was definitely my last trip to this place. The food and bread? The bagels and bread are decent like people say here, but it does not make up for the service. The quiches are cold and if you want them warmed up, they point you to the microwave (which does an awful job anyway). Want your bagel toasted? Sure, you get a free side of attitude to go with it. I really hope management gets a clue because I WANT to spend my money here. I live locally and I'd be here several times a week if not for the garbage service. For the love of Yelpers, please do NOT visit until management puts up a poster outside the shop reading, "We fired the orange haired girl with the pony tail." In response to Tracy and Christopher - no one is expecting 5 star service but customers don't deserve a scowl, a sigh, or a roll of the eyes for asking to get their bagels toasted. I love this place so much. I specifically go for their bagels. My favorite and what has me returning weekly is the onion bagel with extra cream cheese. I have been going to this place for quality years now and truly recommend to anyone to stop by at least once! I pay extra for the cream cheese and the only person who has ever given me what I ask for is Gil. I have even requested beforehand to just have a side if they can't put extra on it. But Gil really is the only one who continuously does it right and gets me what I paid for and him being kind about it helps even more! I usually have to go back in and buy a side of cream cheese when anyone else does it. The cream cheese is my favorite cream cheese and you should definitely try one of their bagels! read more
