Got rye bread from here for St Patrick's day (we made home made rubans) and the bread was DELICIOUS! Highly recommend!

Honestly fuck this place. Every time I have gone in to get a bagel or a coffee myself or one of my friends have gotten borderline verbally abused. They are a bunch of callous and pretentious hipsters who epitomize a shitty customer service experience. The workers all smell like incense and stale cigs and make even the most basic request (like getting a cup of ice water) seem like it's asking them to take a bullet for you. I recommend Grand Central Bakery 2 blocks up for a completely different vibe, great customer service, and better quality food. read more

Awesome for bread lovers, which I am. I like all types of bread. This place has great bread. I had a breakfast bagel sandwich (bagel, egg, cheese, bacon) that was delicious and unpretentious. I also had a cup of chicken and rice soup with a chunk of the most delicious sourdough I have ever had. It was really, really, really good. Coffee is also good. If I am in the area again, I will go back and pick up some bags of day-old bagels/pastries from the discount rack. This place is great. Good food, but when it gets busy the employees tend to forget an order or two. This has happened multiple times. It's a great place to come to bring guests and such, but there is a lot going on with not a lot of room to move around. Also, the price is a little high. I have lunch here every Sunday with friends. The staff is really nice. They have delicious food as well and the Tomato Bisque and Grilled Cheese are to DIE FOR. These guys make some good pastry. Their coffee is decent. They have a card holder on the counter that you can keep your frequent flyer punch card in. That's a good amenity, in my humble opinion. Went there today with my parents and the soup and sandwiches were the best I've had in Seattle and I've lived here over 30 years. But what really stood out was the incredible customer service on a busy Labor Day and busy order pickup day for Challah for the Jewish holiday. I was beyond impressed that the staff set up an extra table for us outside -- we did not even ask. Just nothing but incredibly friendly staff. Made my weekend. read more

Stopped in during a short stay in Seattle. Coffee was decent but definitely not the highlight. The cinnamon rolls here, however, are incredible. Worth a repeat visit for their superb baked goods. Came here on a Friday before hitting the trails for a morning hike. The places was crowded but staff worked through the line quickly. Ordered the bagel sandwich on a salt bagel and it was delish. This is a cool little coffee/bakery/sandwich spot in Wedgwood with a bit of a hippie vibe and an even greater vibe of community gathering spot. Lots of sandwich and quiche options...you'll wait a while if you order a hot sandwich or panini though. I was here with three friends, and the guy who ordered the hot sandwich was still waiting for his while the rest of us oinky pigs tore through our deli sammiches. I've walked past Grateful Bread plenty of times when going to the library and walking around the area, but had never been in before. On Sunday 11/6/16 I decided to finally try it out, and came in for lunch. Grateful Bread bakes bread (which you can buy by the loaf) and also bagels, pastries, cookies, and other treats. They also have deli sandwiches, soups, and quiche. I was a little confused when I entered Grateful Bread because there were two cash registers and no real line, just kind of an amorphous blob of people. It took me a few minutes to decide what I wanted, but it was not clear at first which register to go to. I wasn't sure if you had to order coffee and food at separate registers or not (the coffee bar area was off to the left and the food area off to the right) but it seems that you can order at either one. I had a "Hummus Special" sandwich ($7-ish) on multigrain bread, a coffee, and half of a molasses cookie. The Hummus Special sandwich included a thick layer of hummus, red onion, tomato, and baby spinach. The multigrain bread was a good match for this sandwich as it was firm enough to not get soggy. The cookies ($2.50) are huge! I shared the molasses cookie with my girlfriend. The cookie was delicious and soft (I prefer cookies on the softer side), though I think I would have preferred a bit more spice with the molasses. Overall, on a Sunday afternoon it was a bit chaotic in here, but lively, and the food was good and reasonably priced. I just discovered this place after moving here not too long ago. The service is really good every time I visit and the food is delicious. I had their caesar salad, loved it! The sandwiches are good also with a side of vegan chili (yum)! I have a toddler so it's perfect with the toys that they provide in the back for him to play with. There was one server who helped me a couple of times, Kendall who really stood out. I was buying cinnamon rolls and asked her to pick two with the most frosting since that's the best part, and she went in the back and gave me a little extra. She didn't have to do that, she was just so accommodating and so nice, it makes me want to go there even more! Thanks so much for your superb service Kendall!!!! Glad I moved here, it's so close to these delicious cinnamon rolls! Grace has also been so nice and always saves me some cinnamon rolls when I call her. So, now that I have been to GB a zillion times, I have much much more to complain about. If I were to give a straight-up bread, baked goods, soups and all review, the place would get much higher marks. But, unfortunately, you actually have to deal with the staff and the clusterfck that is the whole establishment. That takes away stars. Several of them. I believe this might be the first review I use many expletives in. I've been meaning to update my review for a while. After visiting twice in a as many days this past week, the update made it to the top of my to-do list. First, quit the f'ing attitude! There was a gaggle of girls behind the counter, who took their sweet-ass time turning the F around to acknowledge my presence and take my order. Which was, btw, one, single, solitary, plain bagel, to go. This was definitely not the first time I have had to wait while employees finish their GD conversations before deciding to do what they are presumably paid to do. Next - can you take any GD longer to make my f'ing coffee? And, really, who doesn't know that things run much more efficiently when you take names for the drinks? Who doesn't know that? I watch a guy take what I know is my coffee, because I pay attention to who is before and after me in line so I know when I can expect to get my drink. So, that's kind of his fault for being an idiot who doesn't pay attention. I would have thought that the difference between a ceramic to-stay mug and a paper to-go cup would have tipped him off, but, hey. So I get up there and get total attitude from the gal, like ooohhhhh shall I bow at your feet because you said you can make me a "new" coffee? How about take f'ing names! And you better f'ing smile and act contrite, too! But the best was the uber-bitch who obviously does not belong in the service industry. I can identify these people because I am one of them. I hate the public and I would hate to serve them coffee or anything else. That is why I do not work in food service or retail. That chick should quit. No smile, no help, no service to speak of ... and no tip. Seriously? What the hell is your problem? And I have a serious bone to pick with some of the labels that they put on their baked items. As I said before, pumpkin muffins do not automatically contain nuts. What gives on the walnuts? Also, an almond croissant contains almond paste. You can't call it "almond" because you sprinkled some slivers on top. Duh. AND they really need to reorganize because the whole place is a cluster-fck. And the kids' area is gross. "Clean up after your kid" means that you put the toys back, not bust out the disinfectant - that is your GD job! Jesus. How hard is it to bust out the bleach every now and again? I think I am moving into the realm of hating this place. A lot. My husband said I had on my very best Pissed Off face this morning. There is ONE GUY who I think does a good job there. Oh My Gooooooodness! I have to laugh! It's been several months since I went in here. I got yelled at so badly once and then horrible customer service another time. I just saw the bad review written a bit ago and the entire incident recalled itself in my mind. ^^^^^^^^^^UPDATE********** WOW I got a compliment from a new Yelper with no name or pix saying I was yelled at because my ass was too big! ummfrom the employee who yelled??? My fiancé and I met some friends here when we were in town the other week. First thing that I noticed? It was perfect for them and their one-year-old daughter. It wasn't too quiet, too crowded, or too stuffy. They had kid art on the walls and a corner with children's games. We got there a little early, so we decided to order coffee before our friends arrived. We didn't have the same problem with the Cafe Vita coffee or service that other people have mentioned here. After our friends arrived, we ordered our meals at the counter, and I got a tuna fish sandwich on their struan -- a multigrain sandwich bread. That was a nice alternative to the usual wheat or whole grain bread I've had before. The tuna was flavorful without being overpowering, and it seemed like it had just the right amount of mayonnaise so that it held the tuna together, but didn't leak out of the bread. I'm giving 3 stars mainly because the sandwich wasn't all that memorable, even though we had a nice enough time inside. If my friends want to eat here again next time we're in the area, I'd go, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way just to eat here. read more

Where's the beef? Well, for this place, it is more like, "where's the corned beef?" I ordered their Reuben, a hot sandwich off their panini griddle and was shocked to discovered that for $7.95, I got 2 slices of corned beef and a lot of Sauerkraut. While I do love fermented cabbage, I would like a better ratio of Sauerkraut to corned beef. At that point, I was just eating a Sauerkraut sandwich. Coffee was alright. I do appreciate that they only charge $0.25 for rice/soy milk substitute, which is cheaper than most places. However at the end of the day my 12 oz soy latte was still almost $4 (it all works out to be about the same price anyway). read more

After receiving a nice note from one of the employees, I can definitely move this place up a notch. I'd say a three until I give their sandwiches another go. Their desserts are a solid 4/5. (So rare that you get articulate feedback for a somewhat negative review, very classy.) Katie was kind enough to let me know what was causing the missing meat problems. It seems they were changing to a new supplier that raises their meats more humanely. Which is very cool. She was getting used to the ordering. A very forgivable offense. And I would have said the same thing if the staff had mentioned that at the time too. My sandwich still was kind of sad. I'm planning on making another few lunch trips to try their sandwich wares. FAIL. Too bad the baked goods here are pretty good. But I will not be going back to Grateful Bread, since the service staff is the WORST service I've ever received in Seattle. You'd think since Grateful Bread has a hippy name/vibe and more conscious food preparation of organic & vegan options, that the staff would be at least nice or pleasant. I'm not surprised to see so many of the YELP reviews hate the staff, and keep complaining about this one woman. The woman with the dyed orange hair (no streak on bangs) who wears her hair in a low-side pony tail, is a total B@#$H to the customers. I've been going there for almost 6 months, and was trying to give the staff and this one woman the benefit of the doubt, since I've worked in the service industry before, and I know serving hungry people can really suck. But everytime I've been in, that girl throws a lot of attitude & is really mean to the customers. She throws down my receipt for signing, rolls her eyes, and never says thank you. I hope management gets a clue, fires this girl, and trains the rest of the staff that running a good cafe means having courteous staff, patience, and non-surly service. Do yourself a favor by not getting crappy service and the horrible punk attitude, and go to Columbia City Bakery and Volunteer Park Marketplace & Cafe. Honestly, I don't like bagels. Seattle bagels are the equivalent to baby food to me. Bland and boring like Taco Del Mar. BUT...then my boyfriend and I discovered Grateful Bread...WOW. The everything bagel + sun-dried tomato cream cheese is my favorite breakfast now. We only get weekend mornings to get breakfast together and we go EVERY sat + sun morning now. To all the Seattle people complaining about their service, you've obviously never worked a service job. Being a veteran barista at a once very busy independent shop, when you have a line out the door and you're serving FRESHLY made food, its going to take longer than the Starbucks food that is premade and sits in the fridge for up to 5 days. STOP COMPLAINING. There is a reason the food takes longer to make. ITS FRESH and GOOD for you. Wait a minute. All you complainers, just don't go here. Espresso takes FOREVER. Baked goods are pretty good. Slow service. I used to like them more, maybe 3 stars...until I saw the harassing they subjected TOP POT to when they were opening up across the street from them. I'm talking calling the city on the work trucks saying they were blocking traffic, threatning Top Pot owners and repeatedly telling them they were trying to shut them down...INSANE stuff...very bizarre IMO & that pretty much changed my opinion of Grateful Bread - all that hippie stuff...they should be spreading LOVE...not Top Pot HATE! read more

This place is just about my neighbor. I have gone there a few times... the food is ok sometimes, better other times, and even sub par other times. The reason for the low score is the people working there. Every time I go I feel like I am burdening them with my patronage. I work in the neighborhood and go here frequently for the AMAZING pumpkin muffins (crunchy walnuts on top, warm and gooey inside!). The coffee is pretty gross, I'm not sure what's up with that I just started ordering an Americano instead. I only give three stars because the service is pretty bad. Most of the baristas are a bit snarky and act like you are troubling them. It's an evil force, the smell of freshly baked bread and warm bagels. Quiches, salads, sandwiches -- they're all good, but my Grateful Bread kryptonite is traditionally a warm bagel with butter AND cream cheese because fat is delicious. I don't really eat bagels anymore, but that hasn't changed my cream cheese habit. Be everyone's best friend, bring a side of their way-better-than-anything-Philadelphia-makes herb 'n' garlic cream cheese with your veggie tray to the next party -- and resist the urge to eat it with a spoon. ...Or don't resist the urge, I won't judge. read more

100% Organic Flour Organic and Sustainable Coffee Organic Milk It's obviously paradise. And the bagels are only $1!!! How's that for sustainability on a budget? They offer many different bagels (I love the garlic bagel with salmon spread- no need to add more cream cheese, the salmon is mixed in with the cream cheese) and a good selection of other pastries (I always have my eye in the lower right hand corner of the display case, if you go you'll know what I'm talking about- dinosaur sized cinnamon rolls!!!!!!). Did I mention 50% day old bagels and bread (shelf at the entrance to the left, but you're going to have to beat me to it)! There's been a line everytime I've been, but it moves pretty quick. They do run out of bagels, and I've heard the old "they'll be out in 5 minutes" and that never coming to fruition, so you might want to get there earlier if you have a preference. read more

Brought my seven and eight year old boys for bagels, ended up with banana bread and a cookie. A chocolate croissant for the wife was later gobbled up with joy. The coffee is fine, I didn't try espresso drinks. Got a bunch of bagels and they were a big hit with the entire family, particularly with the cream cheese packed and sold by this place, which I thought was exceptionally good plain cream cheese. The vibe is just what you'd expect for Seattle and the neighborhood: welcoming, bustling, smattering of kids, noise level easily tolerable, and low key overall. Prices are reasonable and the line seems to move quickly for a pretty packed place. The kids liked the Italian sourdough they bake. Seems like a neighborhood gem. read more
