"Don't California My Tennessee," is all I have to say to those trashing Gray's with incompetent emotional reviews. Moving on... Gray's is one of my favorite restaurants that exists. This is a compliment I don't give out too freely, and this coming from someone who has access to amazing restaurants in Southern California (San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles). We loved coming here when we lived in town and this is the first stop we make whenever we're back for a visit. It's just too good and there's a reason A-list celebs frequent here. Their cocktail bar goes unmatched to any others in the area. I recently dined at a casual fine dining restaurant a few doors down from Gray's, and while their food felt equal to Gray's, their drinks were a sorry disappointment. This was another reminder of how unparalleled they are to anything else around. Onto food, how can one make up their mind? Their fried chicken is a classic and never disappoints, but their daily chef's special is always a delectable treat. End your night with banana pudding and you'll have no regrets. So happy to walk in and enjoy a great upstairs seat at Grays. The figs were pretty good, but seemed a little overcooked. The chicken and steak were cooked appropriately and the flavor was good. My husband and I had actually planned to eat elsewhere but they were packed, so we walked over to Gray's without a reservation, and luckily they could seat us because everything was delicious! I obviously had to get the shrimp and grits, and it's some of the best I've had- the Gouda grits and gravy on top really made it top-notch. Absolutely great experience - Steven was our server and it was our privilege to have him. Absolutely knowledgeable about not only the establishment and the menu but the cocktails. He suggested the "wit and wonder" for her (vodka based citrus and elderberry) and "the anthem" for me (if you like an old fashion, you're welcome). Go! This place is tops, from the history of the space to the delicious food to the awesome live music upstairs to the service. I ordered the pan seared salmon which came with a coconut curry sauce, cabbage slaw and crispy roasty toasty carrots. It had me at the word curry, but truly everything about this dish was spot on. Salmon cooked perfect, the cauliflower rice with the crispy carrots had good texture and the curry added just the right amount of spice to the plate. Our server was extremely kind and attentive, and even the hostess made us feel at home. Since it was the Christmas season they had beautiful festive decorations up and just made the coziest environment! All in all, I can't wait to go back and try something else delicious off the menu. Only reason it's getting 4 stars instead of 5 is that I paid $28 for the salmon dish at dinner, but the exact same salmon dish is on both the brunch and lunch menu at $18. read more

We visited Gray's on Main on a Saturday evening while visiting with son #2 and his fiancée (J & Em!). We started out with pimento cheese balls (outstanding), bacon wrapped figs (excellent! smokey flavor) and some potatoes and cheese dip (wonderful). All were delicious! For entrees, we had the Fried Chicken w/mac 'n cheese and green beans; Bone-in Pork Chop (tender and juicy) w/Mustard Glaze, dinosaur kale, hoppin' John; Halibut (which delicious - and I do not remember the sides that came with it); and the Tuna Steak special, which was delicious as well. Derek, our server, was great - he helped explain the dishes for those of us who had never been there before and he was always available when needed. The famous Anthym Spirit cocktail was excellent - would recommend. The atmosphere was very neat - a sort of pub feel from just after prohibition. The building was built around 1876 and housed the Gray Drug Co. for nearly a century. The building was carefully restored in 2013 and the Gray's on Main was born (there is a second floor as well). Came in on a Saturday night at 5:00 pm. Problems started at the door. No host to greet and at least one other staff member walked by my husband and I without acknowledging us. Host finally arrived ferrying my party of 2 and another party of 4 past the grubby bathrooms and up a staircase to a second floor bar/dining area. Decor was cute; ambiance was nice. But despite many open tables, we were sat directly between two parties. Should have spoke up but don't generally like to be a pain. Skylar introduced himself and took our drink orders promptly, but that is where the good service ended. He returned with just okay mixed drinks from the bar and we ordered a Caesar salad and duck fat chicken drumsticks to start. Skylar asked for our starters so we assumed he'd be back to take our main course order shortly. We were surprised when our appetizers arrived, but our server never returned to take our main entree order. The starters were delicious. But we still hadn't ordered dinner and at this point were feeling a bit awkward with empty starter plates and menus still on the table. Instead of asking us if we'd like to order dinner or if everything was going well, our server greeted another table nearby of friends (who I assumed moved from California because they complained about how much taxes they used to pay before moving here). He sat down at their table and spent several minutes catching up. We could hear this because we were only one table away. At this point my husband and I were feeling quite awkward. How does one ask their server to order a main course after appetizers and salads have already been served and consumed? It was weird and I felt like I was bothering this server by being at the restaurant. The audacity of me to sit in his section! We asked for the check at the first opportunity and our server didn't even ask how everything was. Like he didn't even care. On our way out the door, we passed 3 employees leaning at a service window scrolling their phones. Not even a goodbye thanks for coming in. Hands down weirdest and most disappointing almost meal of my life. Would have asked to talk to a manager but likely would still be waiting. read more

Extraordinarily ordinary. For a medium to high price tag, there are far better places in the area. The Nashville chicken lacked any heat whatsoever for the two in our party who ordered it. Honestly, it had nothing to offer that would make anyone order it again. The shrimp and grits was average size, nothing special as far as seasoning. Would have rather seen 8 shrimp as advertised instead of 4 or 5 plus a big old shrimp head. A guest had the $55 filet ordered medium rare, it was delivered medium well yet the server never asked how it was cooked. Between 10 of us we walked away with a $640 bill including gratuity and most of us were a bit like "what the heck did we just pay for?" Mixed drinks were good. Small list of canned and bottled beer. Essentially the $640 bill was put in front of us to figure out. No real interest from the server to help figure out what was what. Not bad for a $100 tip. Cool setup though with a stage for bands. Again, not sure what the draw is here although its ambience is kind of cool Menu is sparse and way out of date on their website. Like 1/2 of the things on the website aren't on the current menu. This place is so cute! We got seated quickly and they were able to accommodate us upstairs so we could be near the music. I ordered the grilled pear pizza. It was really good, a tad bland but I added salt and it was great! We also had the Caesar salad, one with salmon and one with chicken. Both seemed to enjoy it. The kids had a burger with fries and the other a cheese pizza. Delicious and perfectly portioned! The bourbon glazed salmon was bland as well, and kind of a disappointment. Good experience here. This place is located in an old pharmacy building. It's three stories tall and no elevator. We were on second floor and yes, the people that work here go up and down these stairs all day long! They have a fair amount of gluten free dishes which I appreciate. They specialize in Brandy drinks. Minimal menu but makes it easier to choose from - not overwhelming. Our waitress was kind and enjoyed giving us the history of the building and the pharmacy who owned/ ran it. They have live music at 9pm but we left before it started because they charge a cover fee even if you've already paid for dinner. I love the decor inside. The parking can be difficult depending on the time of evening I'm told but we got lucky and found parking right away. The pork chop was pretty good but the beans that came with it were almost flavorless. This is a classy place with a casual feel. We saw lots of dates there. read more

We did not eat here so not reviewing on that. Our first time in Franklin so we were checking thinks out and this place looked funky fresh so we mosied in on a Tuesday afternoon. Only a few customers there. Hubby wanted a beer. Hostess took us upstairs to the bar. We asked about the history behind the building. She told us it was originally a furniture store and then a pharmacy. Told us about repurposing doors and a history timeline on the wall by the bathroom and the prescription wallpaper. All very chic and interesting. Seems like a great place for live music with a raised stage. All staff was friendly and the air conditioning worked. All good! read more

We had a nice lunch at Gray's on Main on a beautiful Saturday in downtown Franklin. The space itself is great- we were drawn in by the aesthetic. Once we sat down, however, we were not thrilled by the small menu, particularly in terms of appetizers. Ultimately though, we enjoyed our entrees very much, including: --Farmer's Daughter sandwich (ham and bacon on sourdough with mornay sauce) and house-made chips --Blackberry & Strawberry Salad with Salmon Our server was attentive and continuously brought us refills on our soft drinks. Really is a neat place. Food is well made and the ambiance is very cozy. This place is an institution on Main St in Franklin. But...When I told the waiter I was vegan, he said, "there's a salad, but we've really got nothing for you". Understandable, but not helpful. He didn't even offer to pull together sides to make a meal. Just stared at me. Then when I ordered shishito peppers, I belatedly realized they were drenched in butter. I met a colleague here tonight. What a great flavor of downtown Franklin this is! I love to bring out of town folks here! (Be sure to see the old prescriptions on the walls near the kitchen, they were uncovered in the renovation). We started with the Brussels and the fig appetizers. They were both fantastic, but the figs are out if this world! They are served in a steaming hot tiny iron skillet and are just goodness through and through! Being so full from these starters, we both ordered salads. I got the Caesar, I can make a killer Caesar so it is risky for me to order one when out. This one was very nice, with unusual additions, including avocado, sundried tomatoes and a beautiful radish! All in all, this is a great place to visit, bring friends, bring family, everyone will enjoy! I'm updating my review of Gray's after a second visit. Their menu said in large font "Ask about our Gluten Free options" so I asked our server and her very curt reply was "Everything with a star is Gluten Free". I say " Can items be modified to be gluten free?" Seemingly annoyed with me, she replies NO...so I continue with "How about leaving croutons off a salad?" Yes, she says...so, they are not very gf friendly, at least not last night. There were only 2 entrees with stars. I mean, really, who goes to a restaurant to choose between 2 items? My mother and I took a quick trip to do some Christmas shopping in downtown Franklin last weekend. Upon recommendation, we decided to eat a quick lunch at Gray's on Main - we were thoroughly impressed! While we didn't get an entree, we did opt for two of the appetizers on the seasonal menu that had just been released. Though there are fewer options on the menu than anticipated, we were blown away by the bacon wrapped goat cheese-stuffed figs and the pimento cheese balls that were accompanied by a house-made moonshine reduction sauce. Delicious and so unique! The host mentioned they often have live music on the second floor and I have no doubt it's a fun place to hang in the evening!
