My son and I recently stopped at Great Bear Coffee for a cuppa -- and were amazed on all levels. The ambiance, the art, the free dog biscuits -- and especially, the coffee were all wonderful. And the service was great too. I ordered a Latte was made by a male barista, using Osos Blend coffee. I kid you not -- it was the best latte I've had -- ever. Extremely rich yet smooth. I bought a pound of the Osos Blend and he offered to grind the beans. My son ordered the Pumpkin Spice Latte and loved it. I tasted it - and it was great (and I don't generally like 'flavored' coffee). We also got some food -- some sort of a burrito -- which was good. The coffee? Was amazing imo. Like others have mentioned, I had some trepidation that the new owner would fundamentally change a coffee shop institution -- other than cleaner bathrooms, I don't notice much difference. The default coffee is a dark roast which can be stronger and more bitter than some like. There's a medium roast available (at least whenever I've asked) which is likely more accessible to most. If you like flavored drinks, try the chocolate coffee cream (sort of a milkshake and what a frappacino wishes it were) or the irish mocha (but only if you like mint). The wireless is strong and the tables are pretty big -- this is definitely more of a work laptop crowd than a social crowd. The staff are still friendly and helpful. One of my coffee favorites when I'm in town. Service is friendly and the ambiance is very mellow and chill. The ambiance varies depending on day. Busy as times, mellow others. I either order a CCC or vanilla latte. They have food and treats but I typically don't grab anything in the morning. Plenty of seating. It's a must if you're ever in the area. read more

Sunday, Feb, 23, 2025 The matcha latte was good but I have to say the manager was absolutely rude and unprofessional . I was sitting at the bar area having nice conversation with another woman at about 3:30pm. He came over to us and told the woman that she needed to leave by 6pm because that's when they closed. REALLY?? It's 3:30pm SIRRRR!! My husband and I were shocked and completely embarrassed for her because he proceeded to tell her in front of all of us sitting at the bar that she had "some issue" before. That was completely appropriate and unprofessional. He could have waited to tell her that when she was alone or pulled her to the side and had some tact. She was a very nice woman and she didn't deserve to be embarrassed. He owes her and us an apology. read more

Great bear is a staple to Los Gatos! The place is always busy with locals coming in and out, as well as their pets! Over my time here I've seen so many dogs, cats, and even a parrot in this store. Monthly, the art display along the wall changes from artist to artist, which I love. Staff is friendly and knows many of their regulars by name and order. So many flavors to choose for your lattes, just ask to see the list! Growing up my family always got the iced mochas here and I always opted for something stronger. Both are amazing here as they roast their beans in house. It's so nice to see Great Bear survive through the pandemic with all the same charm I remember as a kid. I'm a vegetarian and have others in my family with dietary restrictions and great bear offers so many pastries almost all of which are vegetarian, as well as many gluten free and vegan options (just come early for the best selection, they go fast!). On top of that many pastry/food options here support local businesses, from icing on the cake down the street to bakeries in Santa Cruz. Or try the made in house items: overnight oats, tiramisu, and of course the whip cream. Business is Persian owned and has offered a couple Persian baked pastries (try the wf almond pistachio cookie!) as well as the delicious Persian Rose latte. Great Bear is all about community. I always try to order off of the seasonal/special menu for something unique that's not usually in other cafes and my boyfriend tries to find the best iced cold brew with no sweetener. Thanks to Angie's recommendation, I ordered the Persian Rose Latte with oatmilk. Sadly the only thing I remembered that's in this drink is cardamom so if you like cardamom and like your coffee less sweet, this is the drink for you! My boyfriend also enjoyed his cold brew. If you like chocolate milkshakes, the Chocolate Coffee Cream (CCC) is a must-try! It's the absolute best shake I have ever had. It's the "perfect blend of coffee, Ghirardelli chocolate and vanilla ice cream, topped with real whipped cream." I always stop by Great Bear for a CCC whenever I'm going to Santa Cruz. My wife and I recently stopped here for something to drink after seeing a movie in the nearby Los Gatos Theatre. I have been here many times over the past few years, but this is the first time we tried a Chocolate Coffee Cream milkshake ($7.95 for 16 oz). It was wonderful, one of the best milkshakes I've experienced. The barista even split the portion and gave it to us in two smaller cups, which was the perfect size for us. This is a drink to share with someone as the taste is just too good for one person to experience it without sharing it with someone you love! I do miss the murals on the walls, but the one of the woman behind the counter is still there, but not as a mural, but a photograph of the previous mural. read more

This was my second time here and they have not disappointed. My first time here I got an iced mocha and it was so refreshing and tasty! My fiancé and I had the vegetarian breakfast burrito and pesto quiche. For drinks, we had an iced macchiato with oat milk. The food was served quickly and warm, but neither was particularly memorable. I would have liked to seen more veggies in both, for one. The pesto was extremely minimal in the quiche. Brand new owner. Same Great Bear! After "The Bear" was sold a couple of months ago, I was worried that the new owner would change everything so that he could put his stamp on the place. Fortunately, he decided to keep the same unique character of the original shop while just making a few tweaks. The old bathroom has been updated, the walls have been freshly painted (but the clever trompe l'oeil murals are gone), the floors have been replaced, and there's a large new outdoor seating area with colorful tables and chairs. He wisely kept the experienced baristas, including the longtime manager. Most importantly, his team still roasts the same high quality coffee beans on-site so you know you'll always get a fresh cup. I had a chance to chat with the new owner, Abdy Mirzadegan, while he was grinding a pound of beans for me. He told me that he always wanted to own an independent coffeehouse like this and he was delighted to have the opportunity here in Los Gatos. Based on my recent experience, I'm glad that I can continue to recommend The Great Bear. Their chocolate cream coffee is the best. It's like a milkshake and they add fresh cream on top. I love it when I have it ever few months. If I go too often, I think it's too sweet. I've tried a few of their other coffee drinks and their hot chocolate. I think the CCC is their best drink. It's a super nice shop with nice employees. It's a little confusing when you walk in as to where the end of the line starts. You have to walk around all the people that are directly in front of the register to get to the end. I believe the sign above says line starts to the right of register. I enjoy getting the CCC every few months and walking thru down town Los Gatos to Anthropologie and Sur la Table. read more
