My friends and I visited this resturant because we use to patronize the former establishment when it was there. The new place has really change things up inside as well the menu. The place is suppose to be a pub but looks like a diner and is really brite inside which is not an issue just weird for a pub. The food I found a little high for the menu selections being offered. The place is not expensive by no means I just found that entree selections that are around 15.00 to 20.00 dollars should be more inspired as oppose to serving cottage cheese and fried pairings with the dinner entrees. We loved this restaurant, Bluegill out of this world ! The waiters and waitresses are always on point, friendly and so considerate. They go to work ready and have a positive attitude. That was not our visit the last 2 timeslast time 4-6 months ago was served RAW chicken. After showing this to the waitress, she asked if I wanted my chicken well done ‍ and this time, they were unfortunately out of most items on menu,I ordered a certain salad it was missing most of the staples. Upon bringing this to the servers attention, she nonchalantly told us they were out of everything. She Probably should've done that before we ordered ‍ Half slab of ribs tasted off, a side of shrimp was $4.99 and there were literally four baby shrimp on the plate. I actually vomited on the way home and had to pull off the road. Usually the waiters and waitresses staff are great, this one looked like she had just rolled out of bed. The berry cider tasted artificial, the Cheboygan grapefruit had to have been watered down, the pumpkin ale was ok although very sweet. Dragon's Milk was very good. Sampler served on a cute wooden figure of MI -- but in plastic cups?! Seriously? Cod was good, perch was dry, onion rings were great, cole slaw meh/bland, baked beans good, chicken nuggets gross, kids cheeseburger dry with a really cheap bun. Let's start with the staff... They make the experience with their "I'm happy to be at work" attitude. Never a negative attitude. Very helpful and knowledgeable. Now the food... You wouldn't expect to get awesome shrimp, but the Tempura shrimp is to die for. Besides the eight jumbo, and I mean jumbo shrimp you get two sides. Their steaks are done to perfection, never over cooked. And let's not forget about wing night. The Thai chili lime is the best in my opinion but the BBQ and sesame are good too. I recommend this place to all my friends. And if you love Michigan craft beers this is the place for you. They always have a minimum of 10 on tap.... Like several other reviewers, our visit to Cabelas led us to Great Lakes, courtesy of a recommendation from a cashier. We should have gone back to Cabelas and thanked her. Decor is "great lakesy", food is mostly sandwiches, prepared well and served hot by an attentive staff. I had a Philly cheese, it was delicious, as were the fries. My partner had a fried perch sandwich with fried "onion tangles'. As stated, pretty simple meals, done right. It's not part of a chain, locally owned, always a plus for me. This used to be our "go to" place when we wanted fish. A few months ago, they started making smaller portions, but charged the same price, and we started coming less often. Tonight, we went back and tried it again, and what a disappointment. The portion size is still smaller, but now they have changed the fish. It's not the same as it used to be. Before, the fish was freshly battered in-house and it was delicious. Tonight, our fish was the same as the frozen fish you can buy that is already battered and all you have to do is fry it. Also, the coleslaw wasn't the delicious, creamy coleslaw they used to serve. It didn't seem to have any dressing on it at all. I don't think we'll be coming back anytime soon. read more

We ate here for the first time last night and had quite a good experience. The food was very flavorful; however, the four star rating is mostly due to the steak temperature. My husband and I both ordered the 14 oz. Ribeye, and despite photographs on the menu describing each temp., they arrived overdone. The waitress asked us to cut into our steaks immediately, which is a total red flag that they may not be to the customer's liking. Indeed, they were not cooked according to their own standards depicted on the menu. We chose not to send them back, as whatever meat tenderizing technique they employed kept the meat moist and not at all tough. They were also well seasoned, which diminished the temperature issue. The only other minor food issue was the sautéed vegetable side, which tasted good but was most likely cooked in "creamy" vegetable oil, a hydrogenated oil with fake yellow food coloring that is not good for you. It would be better with olive oil or plain butter. Other positives--the mashed potatoes had some kind of killer crack salt in them--delicious! The service was great, as the waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and competent overall. Also, I was surprised at the number of craft beers on tap. One could probably go there and find at least one thing they like, if not more. It has a sports bar kind of vibe, which I am not super into. But, if you are cruising up 23, it's worth a stop. read more

Decided to try Great Lakes. Located in a strip mall near Cabala's the decor is rather stark. Not that this disappoints me. I prefer it to the plastic upbeat feel of the chain restaurants nearby. The server had a trainee. Both were pleasant an efficient. The menu was typical bar food, burgers, wraps, wings, sandwiches etc. There was sign announcing a Bluegill special that indicates the kitchen can be adventurous. My colleagues and I opted for items from the lunch special menu which were attractively discounted regular menu items. The Great Lakes Fish and Chips, named for the pub not the seafood since it was two torpedo shaped pieces of Pollock was ok, but not great, pardon the pun. The meatloaf sandwich is served on a swirl bread with an orangy color rather than the normal color. No one raved or complained about the food. A good value and fast service make it a viable option for a quick serviceable lunch. read more

Me and my friends ate here today to conclude our Valentines Day weekend. It was totally unplanned and spontaneous and totally worth it. It was close to another activity we did. There was a 15 minute wait that was really only about 5 minutes, which is really good considering the holiday weekend. Staff was really friendly and helpful. Waiter was really good and food came out exactly like we ordered. Really good chicken wings with good sauces. It was a perfect end to an already spectacular weekend. I visited this establishment with a friend for the first time last night. My first impressions were that the prices were a little high. But I must admit that the food tasted excellent. I ordered the ribs. They were among the best ribs I have ever had. They were tender and moist, and literally fell off the bones when I went to pick them up. Additionally, the portion sizes were large. My friend ordered a pulled-pork sandwich (I don't recall what it was named on the menu). Her food was very good, and her portion sizes were large too. I enjoyed the beer selection. It was nice to have something available, other than the usual "Bud" & "Miller" beers found at so many other establishments. I later had a chance to talk briefly with the owner. I mentioned my initial concern about the prices, but told him that I'll be back, as I am willing to pay a little more for good food. Finally, they happened to have live entertainment last night too. It was a man playing acoustic guitar and singing. Though I'm usually not a huge fan of live music while I eat, this was nice. It wasn't too loud or distracting. The performer later mentioned to me that he is a regular, performing every Friday and Saturday evening for the last eight weeks. It was clear that we were carrying coffee that we had purchased at Tim Hortons next door and the hostess didn't say a word however the server says we can't stay with outside drinks even though we planned to order beers with our dinners. Server claims it is a health code violation however I looked it up and it isnt.
