We ordered vegetable steamed dumplings and house special pork from their online menu. Half the meal was thrown out. The dumplings were just a very heavy dough with a small bit tasteless vegetable inside. The pork was so heavily breaded that we had a hard time finding the meat inside. And it actually seemed like some pieces were just breading with nothing inside at all. We would not have ordered this meal if the menu had a description of it as being breaded and fried. read more

I've been to this restaurant many times and watched a woman (who works the register) interacting with customers rudely. So I don't know why I'm surprised when she was extremely rude to me. I only tried this place because some of the recent reviews looked promising. What a mistake. Food was just OK. Chicken fingers were a bit rubbery. Fried rice was tasteless and dry. OMG...This place is great! Tried it for the first time on a cold December night, twas a couple days after Xmas. Dining Room was PACKED but received great service from a charming innocent waiter. First of all, loved the ambiance, the lights kept fluctuating which added character. Now the food!..... I got a Hot And Sour Soup to start, it was unlike any I had had before in my past. Tasted homemade! I ordered the fried Oyster special despite knowing shellfish can be so hit or miss....so glad I did! The oysters were fresh and crispy fried PERFECTLY, they tasted fresh off the happy beach. Now the chef's special steamed dumplings....amazing! The filling tasted better than any dumplings I had had before in my past. WOW! Homemade? I really think so! Also an AMAZING Slow Pouring Soy Sauce, so happy to see that, really makes a difference. Even the black pepper just felt SPECIAL! I also had a noodled beef dish, it amazed me how the beef was so tender and so obviously made to order.....haven't experienced that level of quality at other Chinese food restaurants before. My only complaint is I wish they had used a better vegetable to put the fried Oysters on...they used iceberg lettuce, I didn't want to eat it, icky. OHHH! Almost forgot about the Akai Rice, super healthy and Unique for me. Really high in fiber! I definitely didn't need to order as much food as I did, but I'm glad I tried a lot, I felt like it was a little pricey but it was honestly worth it. On a consistent basis this place has had gloopy, under-seasoned, overcooked food . Also late, with poor service (exceptionally so from the elderly lady front desk). All located in a dank, underlit, outdated, shabby hole in a strip mall. Right down from the rub and tug or the food mart. The Great Wall has the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. A vegetarian's dream, and unique flavors and textures that no other restaurant has ever been able to measure up to. One important thing to note: there are two menus! The standard menu, and the gourmet menu. The standard menu is just that- standard american chinese food: crab rangoon, chicken with broccoli, lo mein, etc. Certainly decent, but nothing out of the ordinary. But the gourmet menu is where it is at. That is what I am reviewing and giving the full shebang: 5 stars. The vegetarian dragon skin is a layer upon delicate layer of paper thin tofu sheets, wrapped around cooked mushrooms and then deep fried to perfection, covered in a delicious brown sauce, and served with broccoli. I have been known to eat the whole thing and then order another. The spicy salt and pepper tofu is again, deep fried deliciousness with hot peppers and salt. So good. My aunt's claim to fame- as a regular there, she inspired them to create this dish. The bok choy is delicious, light, and the perfect compliment to my two favorite tofu dishes that I mention above. For the meat eaters in the group, the eggplant stuffed with chicken and shrimp is soft, delicious, and all around amazing. They also do the Dragon Skin in a non vegetarian version, I think they have chicken in the middle instead of mushrooms. And the roast chicken is a favorite of the meat eaters in my family. It is moist and flavorful. They also have deep fried sesame balls for dessert, filled with sweet red bean paste. Amazing. To top it off, the owner, Clara, is the sweetest woman ever. This place has really deteriorated -- even the takeout. The table we ate at was covered in grease, that old tacky kind of grease that's been accumulating. The service was poor. Their food is heavenly! I only order from the traditional Chinese food menu, not the Americanized stuff, and have never been disappointed. The dragonskin is crispy and stuffed with delicious, tender mushrooms and shrimp with a sweet sauce on top. The stuffed tofu will convert any tofu-hater you know (myself included)! The stuffed eggplant is to die for, so savory and meaty tasting. And the layered beef with 5 Chinese spices is so hearty and satisfying! I would recommend this place to anyone! My dining exeperience was good. The food was good, the atmosphere is dated. On the other hand I had a horrible attempt at delivery. I placed an order and at the end the staff hung-up. It took me 5 minutes to get back through and she informed me that I hung up and that I could pick up my food. Our party of 9 ate here early afternoon on Dec. 31, 2011. There were few diners at that time. I cannot comment on individual dinner plates. We had the dim sum, and the food was truly awful with doughy dumplings and hard, dry scallion pancakes. Rather than bringing the food on a cart as is customary, the servers brought it over plate by plate to offer us from a serving station near the middle of this very small restaurant. This was the area close to the door where customers stood to wait to be seated. The serving station had no sneeze guard or covering of any kind to protect the food we were being served from being contaminated by coughs or sneezes of waiting customers standing closeby. I don't understand the good reviews they have gotten. The service was good, but the dim sum we had was the worst Chinese food any of our group had ever eaten. read more

I didn't know food so bad could be so overpriced! I got takeout from there once, and only once because I am afraid to try it again. This is sad news as my studio is right across the street and it would have been really convenient. I ordered crab rangoon and hot ans sour soup. I know my hot and sour soup was reheated in the microwave from frozen state, because it was a nauseating light grey color, really runny and the tofu texture was super crumbly. Needless to say I couldn't eat it. I don't know how you mess up crab rangoon but they did. Waaaaaaaay too sweet and also kind of grey instead of the usual golden brown. Dim sum at The Great Wall: it's a one-cart restaurant. It's a small, family run restaurant. The food is good, but service is spotty and inconsistent. All the dishes are on one cart supplemented by dishes in three or four chafing pans. Typically, they have lo mein, pork buns, shu mai, Shanghai dumplings, scallion pancakes, spring rolls, salt & pepper shrimp and squid, shrimp dumplings, sesame balls, spare ribs, stuffed tofu, steamed greens (by request), seaweed salad, folded rice noodles, and sometimes they have an eggplant dish, fresh spring rolls, mussels, and different dumplings. My wife and I generally enjoy the food but the service makes me want to pull my hair out, e.g., our bill varies enormously though we generally get the same stuff (they're not consistent about counting dishes) and sometimes we get two sesame balls and sometimes three. I do think they serve some of the best Chinese food in the area and recommend trying items off of their "gourmet" menu which is their more traditional Chinese fare. I would give 4 stars on food, but their service really needs improvement. (How about washing the teapots once in a while?). And note, dim sum is only on Saturday. read more

Great Wall has great food but you have to order from almost the traditional menu to get the good stuff. Otherwise it can be just another Americanized Chinese restaurant. When my husband and I moved to the Valley 8 years ago we tried Great Wall but didn't like it. We settled on Panda East for our Chinese fix, but then they lost their lease and went out of business so we tried Great Wall again. At first we found the food to be really good and we wondered if we had been mistaken the first time, but over the past year we have found the quality of the food to be so inconsistent that we have decided not to go there again. Consistency is so important and I have found their food to be great one time and then inedible the next. For instance we have had wonderful beef dishes and then had the same dish and the beef was tough, slimy, bland, and you could taste the corn starch! We always request mustard packets when we get delivery and they never come! I've never seen a Chinese restaurant that was so stingy with their condiments. Usually they give you too much! Here, they don't give us the packets of mustard even when we ask for them. At times their lo mein has been excellent and then next time it has no flavor at all. I even tried dumping soy sauce on it and it was still bad. The last time I ate there the broth for the wonton soup was tasteless. Unfortunately, like Indian restaurants, I think there are no good Chinese restaurants in the Northampton area. I'm tired of paying high prices for mediocre food. If I'm going to pay for someone else's food, I want it to be at least as good as what I can cook, and hopefully better! read more

Best local Chinese joint I've ordered from. I usually do General Tsos with steamed dumplings. Best General Tsos I've ever had. Big pieces of white chicken breast, you can't find that anywhere. Dumplings seemed hand made having a nice thickness to them. The food seems somewhat healthy too. It doesn't have that weird greasy taste too it which I really like. The woman who took my order over the phone was downright rude and when I arrived to the restaurant to pick up my food, I was left standing at the front counter alone for a couple of minutes as no one acknowledged my presence. Not only was I not greeted warmly, but I was not thanked for my business after I paid for my food. Hands down the best Chinese in western Mass. If all you want is something fried with a sticky-sweet sauce, there are plenty of other places like that. If you want authentic Chinese food, you have to go here. They have two menus: one is generic American style, the other is the real one (they call it the gourmet menu). The specials posted on the door are amazing too. People are very nice and the atmosphere has improved. On the phone, service is sometimes curt, but once they're not taking tons of orders, they're so nice. Remember, this isn't the cheap pagoda Chinese, but the value here is far better than anything outside of Boston or NYC. The only thing I would change would be their use of styrofoam containers. They sometimes melt with dishes like the iron skillet beef. My family has been going here for years and it just keeps getting better. read more

High quality Chinese food. I like to stop by for their lunch specials which usually cost $7 not including the tip. Their House Special Chicken is a spicy, garlicly variation of General Tso's Chicken that I like to eat with their above average Fried Rice and Wonton Soup. I should note that The Great Wall makes the best Crag Rangoons that you're likely to find. From their Gourmet Menu, which doesn't include the standard Americanized Chinese food like Boneless Ribs, I recommend their savory aromatic Roasted Chicken, which has the perfect texture and flavor. read more

We ordered at 5:29. I asked how long it would take to deliver. The woman told me 30 min. It's a 10 min drive from my house so I asked them to deliver. At 50 min I called and they told me that the delivery person had already left. At 80 min my mother called and expressed that we were concerned about the food being hot. They said that we could just send it back when it arrived. We did not want to do that because we were anxiously awaiting our food. The delivery man arrived well over 90 min after the order was placed. He was very nice and told us that he was given many orders from the restart to deliver at once. At 30degreea it seems strange to send multiple orders at once. Not surprisingly, our food was ice cold and needed the microwave but more troubling was that we ordered spicy entrees and in fact asked for one of them to be extra spicy and none of the food had any spice to it at all. Calling this the worst Chinese food ever would be an understatement. My friends and I were actually scared to eat it for fear of getting ill, due to the rancid, old oil taste in all of the food. We had sesame chicken, fried rice, spring rolls, steamed dumplings, and lo mein. The dumplings were also disgusting, but because they were not put into the oil, they at least did not taste like chemicals. Also, the woman who took our order was extremely rude. The food here can be absolutely fabulous. I have been going there, having deliveries, and take out for over fifteen years. Except for certain periods of time while I try and forget really bad experiences and how they handle it. The fly served in my soup. The foot long hair threaded through my tofu special. My nice neighbor who always tells the story of the cockroaches in her dish. The countless and countless times of the wrong food in my take out. Their is also just the regular bad manners on phone or in person and to a customer who has given so much ( I think pleasant and understanding) business for so many years. I have had the final straw with them a few times, but now I must say goodbye for good after second wrong order in a row. This time I verbally verified my order before taking it home. It was wrong, that happens. I called with good manners considering the frustration to let them know and ask that the item be credited to my card ($5.95). The woman on the phone would hardly listen and would not stop saying they got it right she was eventually yelling at the top of her voice at me for some time until I hung up.
