Attention city food snobs!!!! I have to agree with some reviews that Oriental Flavor in Amherst has a little bit of the edge in terms of consistency. But I still gotta go with a great review. It's some of the best Chinese food in Western Mass. I'm picky and snobby because I'm from San Francisco. Nothing else really compares to this or the Amherst location. (Ginger Garden kinda close) If you just like lo mein and rangoons and brocolli beef and other fried stuff it's not gonna stand out. But the variety and tastiness of most of their dishes stands out. Generals tofu is out of this world, spicy pepper beef also great along with lots of other choices. Veggie fried rice: excellent. It's my go to for Chinese. I usually just pick up or use delivery so it gets expensive but worth it. read more

A nice little oriental place. Has a lot of seating inside both on the ground floor and a level above. They have a mixed menu, authentic Chinese and some Japanese options. Tried only a few sushi rolls but not the ones with raw fish. But these good as well. The best I'd recommend is the schezuan shrimp and soup dumplings. The shrimp portions appear to be large, they have great taste. However, Its slightly bigger because of how it's fried and battered. But its not too excessive compared to the shrimp. It's still little and has a good crunch to it. The portions for the rice was quite large as well. The service was really good, always came and stopped by to check in. It's my go to Chinese restaurant (and they do Japanese) - but mostly for convenience. Their food is decent but nothing amazing. Also service is not the friendliest. But it is the best for Northampton (except Great Wall but it's hard to get there when it's open). Good for delivery or take out - when you want Chinese. read more

The service is pretty good. The server is very nice. The food was fast for half (dim sums) - 10 min and very slow (for entrees) - 20+ min. Two big errors. 1) The pan-fried dumplings were under cooked and the pork is raw inside. It's true. I'm sorry. I think they used frozen ones and the pan frying couldn't thaw it. I didn't want to believe it when my guest told me but then I saw it myself (see picture). That was bad. We didn't send it back, but we probably should. Fingers crossed that we don't get sick tonight. 2) An honest mistake happened in taking the order. The food was wrong. It was so late arriving that we are full. Server kindly offered to take it off the bill (the right thing to do in this circumstance). But the manager overruled her and offered either to bring the correct dish in take our container (we were leaving) or 15% off the wrong dish. We didn't argue and just took the take out and paid. I don't think that's the right way to do it for the restaurant. Who'd want 15% of the wrong dish after it's been taken away to the kitchen barely eaten (and now cold). The food was absolutely delicious!! The crystal dumplings are GF and they were such an amazing treat. The Gemini Roll was delicious but it does fall apart easily. The Tokyo Roll is a new "I will order this every time I go there", but unfortunately the cancer roll was very tempura heavy (according my sushi loving cousin). Overall recommend!! read more

We had the special house made noodles from the south of china, recommended by the waiter, they were excellent. Also loved the string beans, and had a couple other good dishes. Prefer the oriental taste in Amherst in a pinch this one's OK but miss really good Chinese food for my childhood haven't found a restaurant that comes up to that standard in the 60s. I think people were more committed to sharing their culture in a serious way back then. read more

If I were to pick out important memories from my college years, Oriental Taste would be on the list. They have amazing extensive menu that allows for trying something new every time. The atmosphere of the restaurant is robust, lively, and homey. OT is where I like to go the full nine yards--I'm talking drinks, apps, desserts. My favorites here are the flat rice noodles, shu mai, red cooked pork, and anything in the salt and pepper flavor. I have never had to add salt to my Beef Chow Fun before... So I'm driving up north for a weekend getaway and I decided I want some collegetown chinese food when stumbled upon Oriental Taste. Upon my arrival to pick up my order, I was surprised with their seating area. Very nice, I would actually sit down and eat here. Only reason I say this is I'll be honest, I thought this was one of those take-out only places at first. Pleasant surprise! However! It was short lived. No utensils or napkins in my take-out bag. Not sure who's fault it was but usually having nothing like this is an unpleasant surprise. And on top of that, I've had the same problem with opposite flavors. By that I mean, I ordered two (2) of my favorite Chinese take-out meals: Beef Chow Fun and Sesame Chicken. The Beef Chow Fun was cooked nicely and all but unfortunately, the seasoning was too light. Bland flavors, I was able to fix the issue a day later when I added salt to it. There was not enough saltiness to it and the whole time I felt like I was eating plain and greasy noodles. Now for my Sesame Chicken, it was way too sweet! It was almost more like General Tso's Chicken that was swimming in that sweet sauce and it just happened to soak up the entire sauce container like a sponge. Maybe that's what it was, the chicken was spongey and way too sweet. It just wasn't good. Fortunately, their service was quick and the restaurant itself earned my respect but unfortunately there were a couple easy to fix yet major issues with the food that I ordered. Hopefully the next time I come around, I won't need my emergency salt shaker that I don't actually have. read more

Visited Oriental Taste as a new restaurant in our family dining repertoire. We were impressed with the size of the menu. Selections ranged from traditional Chinese to Japanese. I had the Spider Sushi Roll which was well prepared and delicious. Our server was very courteous and attentive to the accuracy of our order. If I want to order takeout or go out to eat, this is usually a last resort if I can't think of anything else and im stuck in Northampton. That's not to say it's bad though, probably the best Chinese food in Northampton but definitely nowhere near the best in the area. It's definitely the kind of place where you don't wanna order anything too out of your comfort zone, something might be weird about it. There have been times where I've gotten food from here delivered and it's been basically inedible, but there's also been plenty of times where it's been delicious. So inconsistency is definitely a factor here. However, when it's good it hits the spot. Definitely stick to the Chinese part of the menu though, that's what they specialize in. read more

Jerks!!! Ordered $60 worth of food via DoorDash (only way to get delivery to Hatfield). I asked for no mayo on my shrimp tempura roll and they gave me extra. UGH!!!! Disgusting!! The other food was not good either. Dan Dan Noodles were off-tasting and just a congealed mass of noodles with hardly any sauce. Cumin chicken ordered "very spicy" was doctored up with a huge amount of red pepper flakes like what you put on pizza. Gross. The dumplings had a very weird texture. I absolutely loved dining at Oriental Taste in Northampton. To be honest, I shied away from Chinese food for years. I eat Japanese food and mostly ate sushi, hibachi noodles, shumai, veggie dumplings, etc throughout the years, but one bad experience at a Chinese restaurant scarred me years ago. Fast forward to recently when I decided it was finally time to satisfy my craving and try some. I just so happened to pop into Oriental Taste and ordered the orange chick (not spicy), vegetable Lo Mein, crab rangoon appetizer, scallion pancake appetizer, and spring rolls. I cannot even express just how impressed I was. THIS is what I've been missing for years. Not overly greasy, syrupy, or gross Chinese food. I didn't feel disgusting afterwards. The apps tasted crispy and fresh. The Lo Mein and orange chicken were PHENOMENAL! I've ordered take out twice since then. The restaurant itself was clean and the staff was accommodating. If you're going to do Chinese, Oriental Taste is THE place! In my life, I've seen some dumplings that are average at best. Oriental Taste has mastered the dumpling art form. Their pan fried pork dumplings are the perfect shape. They are big, round, and full of happiness. In addition, they are perfectly juicy and loaded with meat when you bite into them. With every bite of each superior dumpling, you get an explosion of juicy goodness and delicious flavor. The outside is as crispy as it is soft. It's exactly the combination you want. They also come with this very tasty dipping sauce. These dumplings are THE BEST. I'm telling you. I've had MANY other dumplings in my life and NONE have ever been this good. Ordered takeout which amounted to nearly $40 once Door Dash attached all their fees, etc. I ordered three items: soup dumplings, spring rolls, and kung pow shrimp. Dumplings were fine but nothing special. Spring rolls barely contained any filling and didn't come with sweet chili sauce. Kung pow shrimp was basically celery and peanuts in soy sauce with approximately 6 shrimp. I know we're face planting straight into a recession and it's a show of privilege to complain about food I didn't have to cook or leave the house for. But really? Celery? Celery is barely even a vegetable. You can dumpster dive behind any grocery store and get enough celery for a year. Remember when Chinese restaurants used to phone it in with the dollar bag frozen vegetables? Well, I guess those are too expensive. I have been to this location probably around a dozen times and the food is always so good! But the problem I always seem to have is the staff that works here. I called in an order around 5PM to be picked up at around 5:30PM. I paid over the phone to make things easier as well! I arrived and expected my food to be waiting for me because I was running a bit late than expected with the traffic going to Northampton. To my surprise, my food was not there! The staff seem to be scrambling around trying to look for my order. At the conclusion of the search, the manager said to me ' Sorry I think the lady that came in before you took your food and didn't tell me' I couldn't believe my ears, the staff here let random people just take $80 worth of food out the door... They had me wait another 40 mins to re make my food and ultimately, DID NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE IT RIGHT BY ME. Not even a shred of guilt or a credit for next time. Just something!! Never coming back. Fantastic Szechuan and Chinese Food. Always fresh and well cooked. Wonderful service. I love the way they cook their vegetables: always perfectly steamed: with crunch to them. I loooove supporting this restaurant. Their spicy cucumber salad is so delicious and flavorful. And for their dishes that are not Americanized Chinese food, they do not cater to Whitewashed flavor profiles so that's where their food really shines!!! Oriental Taste is a hit or a miss depending on what you order. Sometimes, they get the food just right and it tastes very authentic. Other times, it tastes like a rough attempt at what they should be. The Fried Squid tasted as good as any I've had in Flushing, and in Chinatown in NY, and the Pig's Ears were delicious as well. However, the Soup Dumplings had no soup (Very disappointing. I love this dish normally), and the Mala chicken had a strange consistency. The wait staff is not very attentive. They do their jobs fine, but other times when I try to get their attention, they are on their phones and I'm tempted to print my own check and check myself out. I have to do some weird mating ritual dance just to get them to see me. This might, however, be a consequence of the lack of patrons. Overall, know what you want to get, and I suggest getting Carry-Out to avoid the service. read more

Very disappointed in this place. Customer service is horrible. I feel like we were treated differently because we weren't Asian. There were 2 parties of Asians who came in after us so we saw the way they were treated and the way we were treated. The waiters were very attentive to them but indifferent to us. I had to call for the waiter to put in our order for food, literally no one was interested in coming up to us, we were sitting for over 20 minutes trying to order food. After waiting close to 30 minutes my food came out, unfortunately my wife's food was brought out 40 minutes after mine. What's the point of going on a date night if we're eating at separate times. I wouldn't mind all of this, I understand that the restaurant business if short staffed, however there were 2 parties of Asians who got their food in a reasonable amount of time. Asians who came in an hour after us got their food before us. That's absurd. I saw on numerous occasion non-Asians trying to get the attention of the wait staff while the Asian customers were constantly approached and asked if they need anything. Blatant discrimination. If the roles were reversed and Asians were treated like we were this place would get sued, but somehow its ok if the people being discriminated against are white. Discrimination and treating someone differently based on race is wrong no matter who you are. The food wasn't anything special either. The beef in my meal was very low quality. Just a typical Chinese restaurant. Nothing to write home about. Definitely not worth the 2 hours we spend at this restaurant waiting to get our food. read more

Just Okay for my first experience on a Sunday mid afternoon. I ordered take out via yelp but was scolded when I got there. I had written "please add avocado" to my special notes and was prepared to pay for it. However I was told when I got there "call for special orders" but I didn't actually get the avocado. Nor did I receive a call which if you've ever ordered from yelp, it says to provide a phone number should they have any questions. Oh well. Not there fault. Decent Hong Kong Roll sushi. Oriental Taste is pretty solid if you're looking for some yummy tasting Asian food. It took my friends and I a while to order because there were so many items ln the menu. They were very similar dishes that it seemed kind of confusing. We ended up ordering scallion pancakes, dumplings, soup dumplings, ma la chicken , mapo tofu, and a salt and peppered fried squid. The scallion pancakes, dumplings, and soup dumplings were all okay. The scallion pancakes did not have much scallion but still had an okay crisp to it. The dumplings were filled well with ground chicken but tasted a bit odd. And the soup dumplings had a good texture but there was barely any soup in them! The entrees we ordered tasted much better but maybe a little on the oily side. Also, on a previous visit to this restaurant I ordered a cold pigs ear dish, and that was aunthetic and very delicious! Setting: Entering the place, it was very quiet around 2 pm on a Saturday (weird time to eat I know lol). But the restaurant is very pretty and has great lighting from the fixtures and incoming sunlight. Even though we were 1 of 3 groups at the restaurant, the waiter seemed not very attentive but thats kind of normal for Chinese restaurants. Pretty disappointing sushi - the eel avocado roll had a hunk of avocado, with a barely visible piece of eel. Salmon sushi was good, but at $7 for two small slices, was overpriced. The miso soup had very little flavor. I've got nothing bad to say about the seaweed salad but that was the only thing that wasn't either skimpy or flavorless. There are better sushi restaurants in Northampton and I'll be going to them from now on. read more
