"Great Wall Restaurant" is an old-school chinese restaurant located in San Leandro's Manor Shopping Center. They serve up popular Cantonese comfort foods, and some rare "hard to find" dishes. I was there on a Thursday evening in search of a rare and elusive soup......"Hong Tu (Tao) Yee Foo Won Ton Soup." Deep fried won tons in a Westlake style Egg Drop soup. Sometimes dressed with cilantro, minced ham or char siu. It was invented in San Francisco Chinatown, and is considered a regional dish. I got a table way in the back! The waitress gave me a chinese zodiac place mat, and offered me tea or ice water. I ordered: - Hong Tu Yee Foo Won Ton Soup, Price $12.95 - Salt & Pepper Shrimp, in-shell, $11.95 Very fair prices for such good food! For a dine-in experience, a Yelp score of 3.5-4.0 is about right. We used to pass by this restaurant every time we went grocery shopping next door, but never stopped in. One day we decided to give it a try and ordered a few dishes to go. We thought the food was pretty good so we decided to come back for Father's Day. They serve the usual Cantonese favorites, but what makes this place special is that they specialize in Hoisan cuisine. The prices are reasonable, and while the restaurant itself is a little dated, I'm there for the food, not the decor. I'll be honest the service isn't the warmest, so don't come expecting a lot of attention. But the food is the reason people come here. We ordered several dishes, but the dish that really stood out to me was the steamed pork with salted fish. The first bite immediately brought me back to my childhood. Looking around the dining room and seeing so many Hoisan families eating there made me feel like I had been transported back to my mom's home village. Service at this place was extremely poor. My wife and I arrived for dinner last Friday around 6:15pm. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet no one greeted us or offered seating until we walked to the register. We were placed at a table by the exit, and despite waiting about 20 minutes, no one came by until we flagged someone down. Even then, we were only given paper placemats and a single fork--no plates, napkins, or basic table setup. As the restaurant filled, every table seated after us was promptly attended to with full settings, tea, and quick order-taking. Meanwhile, we waited 30 minutes with no service. We had to wave someone down again just to place our order. By 7:15pm--60 minutes after arriving--we still had no plates, no bowls, and no food. When I went to the register to ask about our order, we were suddenly told it would be out "in a couple of minutes." The dishes finally arrived, minus one, and the food looked rushed and tasted bland. To top it off, when paying, they took my credit card and returned five minutes later claiming the machine "wasn't working" and asked for cash. While I don't make racial assumptions lightly, the contrast between how we were treated and how other guests were served was noticeable disappointing and discriminatory. My family has been going here since 1996. Food quality and service have diminished immensely. It used to be the best chinese food in the area as far as taste and value. Now the portions are small and the waiting staff is very rude. The cashier named Kim especially. I came with my family of 4 and was seated on a normal 4 top table. I absolutely love coming here for take-out or dine-in. The food is delicious and very well priced. I usually will get some basic dishes like fried rice, chow mein, and orange chicken. Those are always a hit. I've also tried some of their dishes off of the 3 for $33 menu. This time around I tried the Braised Cod and it was so good. Fish tasted so fresh and the flavoring was tasty. I also am a fan or pork ribs so I tried the Peking ones. Another hit. I really like the atmosphere. It's loud from people talking and enjoying their visit. Also the staff is always great. My family and I visited this restaurant on a Friday evening around 6PM and found parking easily although a bit tight. When you initially walk up to the restaurant, the windows are covered so you can't see inside that well. When you walk in, the place is lit moderately and the decor reminds me of the 2000s. There were about 3 other groups in here(and one of the customers, caucasion man stared at us weirdly. Not sure why!). We were seated quickly and the lady who served us understood Cantonese. We ordered 3 dishes and 1 fried rice for 4 people. We found the price to be quite fair($10.95 for the salted fish fried rice), and portions to be fair. The service was good, but with how empty the place was, that's not surprising. For 4 people, we spent about $50 including tips. I have not been in this place for years and decided to try it. The won ton soup was terrible, they were too hard and tasteless. The soup was so plain and the bok Choy were ok. The Hong Kong style pan fried noodles was covered with salty gravy, a little deep fried noodles. The price was low. You get what you paid for. read more

Neighborhood Cantonese restaurant situated in a little strip mall. A small restaurant which has a lot of take-out orders but sufficient number of spread out tables to suit your party of 1 to many. Serves comfort Cantonese food like Dry Beef Chow Fun, Diced Chicken and Salted Fish Fried Rice, Peking Spareribs, Beef Stew with Tendons in a Clay Pot, etc... We had the three item (pick from a two sided menu - you might need to ask for the menu) meal for $31 which is your choice of items along with a bowl of house soup (diced pieces of protein, bones, and veggie clear soup). We picked: - Fried Fish Filets and Fried Tofu in a Claypot - Peking Spareribs - Beef Stew & Tendon in a Clay Pot All three dishes were tasty and met our expectations. Decent portions and our table of three men finished all except for the Beef Stew which I took home. The items came out in the order listed. Rice is extra on the $31 menu and since we were carb watching, we asked for only two bowls which were more than enough. Introduced to this restaurant by golfer for our 19th hole. Good Cantonese food. They have special 3 item menu so we ordered 6 items from special menu. Every dish was very good. No MSG so really liked the what we ordered. We also ordered 2 orders of the Fried Won Ton Soup. Service was very good and waitress was very friendly. I dined at this restaurant about a year ago and decided to revisit. As always we were greeted and seated right away. The ambiance is okay. Our drink order was taken as soon as we sat down but it took about 10 minutes for the waiter to return and take our order. We ordered a variety of food items (6) and 2 drinks and the tab was about $90 dollars. I enjoyed the food experience but it could be better for the price. I walked in early on. Friday night & ordered take out. Just starting to get busy with both take out & dine in. Waited less than 15 minutes, exactly how long she said it would be. I was excited to eat there again so though I have a pic of my chow mein, the egg rolls didn't make it! Lol I got black bean sauce chicken chow mein & veggie egg rolls. It was REALLY delicious. There were onions, zucchini and green bell peppers in the chow mein & I forgot to ask what they put in it because I would have said no peppers but I just removed em! Easily enough for 2 at $17 (3 egg rolls/order). You MUST try if ever in the Manor area of San Leandro, worth every penny. Are you kidding me... ? Agree w Rose L.'s review more rice than entree dish. Went in yesterday (Sun.) @ 2:30P & ordered Kung Pao Chicken from their Lunch Special Menu. Was shocked in the minut/diminutive amount in a portion served along w rice. I feel they used only a min. amt of zuchinni (@ most the small cubes made up from 1/10 portion of an avg Italian squash, 4 small slices each of celery & onions at best) about 6-7 peanuts, no carrots or other veggies, anything else, minimal sauce. Kung Pao Chicken. Sorry no photo available. No fried wonton skin or small egg roll or even small soup w the order. Soup was extra, I was told. As Rose L commented no soup was given for her takeout order, but I had a sit-down @ table order. Also no fortune cookie, no small orange slice, either. That's really stingy. Profit margin must be high for this business. My grandfather owned & ran a Chinese restaurant & I even worked there w my Mom waiting on table. I find it embarrassing that Great Wall would even put that small of a portion of food howbeit a lunch special on a plate & honestly say that it sufficient even for lunch. They need to to be ashamed of themselves. They operate like they are an a shoestring budget in service, prep & attaining ingredients. We are not under Covid, were some eateries were scaling back, service & sometimes food. I didn't come in being on a diet, I'm not a large person... I have a small & normal build & am a senior requiring only reduced daily food intake, but truthfully this is substandard & well below the avg amount of food in a lunch special just about anywhere else to can go for a similar sit-down off the menu meal. Food quality was just okay, but they don't prepare the Kung Pao Chicken like everywhere else, no chili peppers or red chili flakes, it was not hot, just plain... it's supposed to be spicy. One of the few Chinese family style restaurants that don't use MSG in their food.. and this place proves that you don't need it for food to taste good. This place is packed and for good reason. They have a 3 dish for $22.99 special that can feed a party of three. Or they have their standard offerings where you get an even bigger portion. Unfortunately I don't think they have the staff to handle this type of volume as the food came out pretty slow. On a Sunday night, we ordered our food at 6:30 PM and the first dish that came out was close to 7:00 PM, and the last dish came out around 8:30 PM. Another problem with this restaurant, is there was a line of about five people deep waiting for the restroom. Most of their dishes were spot on and memorable. Their soup of the day was on the mild side which is fine since there's no flavor enhancer. In fact, it was refreshing. They do make their Salty Fish and Chicken Fried Rice (there's a pungent smell so and the fish texture can be a turn off to some) very aromatic and with plenty of salty fish. The Chicken Curry had good flavor, but would've benefit from have more sauce. Garlic Green Bean was nice and crispy but would've prefer if they used less oil. Their Stir Fry Egg with Bitter Melon was well done, and so was their Fried Tofu. Their Sale and Pepper Spare Ribs was standard and would've been better if they cut the pieces of pork in smaller pieces. This is one place worth trying but bring your patience. read more

I have not been to this restaurant in many years. I'm not sure if the owner is the same or if it has changed hands. Nevertheless, I ordered the lunch special, and it was fantastic! Finally back for in person dining! I think they reopened a few months ago, but I didn't find out until September. It wasn't very busy, and they seemed short on wait staff. Their prices haven't gone up very much (unlike EVERY other restaurant), and the food and proportions seemed the same as pre-Covid. I noticed that there were several patrons dining with their families and someone from their group would go next door to the Manor market and purchase a fresh fish and bring it to the kitchen to have it cooked. We'll have to try that sometime! I was disappointed in their braised pork belly with preserved veggies though. Just wasn't cooked right. During the quarantine times, their service is top line. I recommend that you call in to order. They have a table set up in the entrance of the restaurant for pick up. The lady who helped us for a Sunday evening dinner moved very quickly and was super nice. Portions are SO generous. Order: -Honey walnut prawns: We got more shrimp than walnuts! We got at least 15 big pieces of shrimp. It's pretty coated in batter. It could have used more may dressing -Mongolian beef: This used to be our go-to. The beef is very tender and has a lot of wok flavor. But it was missing some oomph/spice to it that it use to have. -Green beans with shrimp: Delicious! Green beans were very tender and flavorful. They also included a generous handful of shrimp! -Beef stew clay pot: While it was generous, it lacked a depth of flavor. There was more tendon than actual pieces of beef. Great Wall Restaurant is located in San Leandro. After visiting Quickly next door, my eyes caught this restaurant. I hadn't eaten lunch yet, and I remembered this place from many past visits in the area. I decided to try them out. The staff were friendly and attentive as I was seated. They spoke Cantonese. I asked for their 3 items for $21 menu. I ordered the Salted Fish Chicken Fried Rice and Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings. I asked the waitress for a suggestion for vegetables, and she recommended the Chinese Broccoli with Garlic Sauce which I ordered. The food came out quickly in rapid succession. The food was good and cheap to boot. It filled me up. It happened that it was time for the staff to eat lunch as well. If I am in the neighborhood and have an empty stomach, I would definitely stop here to eat. read more
