This Cantonese restaurant is operated by Toishanese, and it serves some pretty authentic Cantonese dishes as listed seasonally on the blackboard inside. It also serves many typical Americanized Chinese dishes, and they don't look half bad either. I highly recommend eating there instead of taking out because that way the food comes out fresh and you are able to enjoy it in its best state. I tried taking the food home once and I guess I took too long to open the box. I don't think theres many items on the menu that could stand overcooking some more in the containers... The $21.99 for three dishes and a soup is very affordable. There is some really good options offered, such as the beef brisket pot, Chinese broccoli with garlic, and ones with pork chops. I love the wonton soup here and the black bean chicken. I got the chicken chow menu which was tasty, but I wish they put more chicken in it. We got take out and they forgot to add fortune cookies. Its located in a small strip mall, mostly asian it seems, certainly the clientele indicated as such. This place looks like it has been here for ages and they haven't changed the outdoor signage in a decade. Give it a real hole in the wall feel. Upon entering, you get the same vibe. About 2 table occupied and 3 others came in for pickup while I waited. When I got there, they were confused about the no gravy and told me I should get it as it will make it better. I said I understood, but couldn't have it due to my diet (keto). She showed me the ingredients that I was expecting to be in the egg foo young. I said it looks fine, just cook them inside as I've seen at other Chinese restaurants. She said, normally these ingredients sit atop the egg along with the gravy. They wouldn't cook them inside. Oh well, I said, that's fine, just give it to me like that. I don't think they had started cooking the egg portion at that time. I ended up waiting an additional 15 minutes, so 10 minutes longer than I was quoted. Total was just over $10. Combination was to have shrimp, pork, chicken and I think she even said beef, which I thought was odd. When I got to my car to check it out, I noted the ingredients on top only had shrimp, carrots, onions, and bok choy. None of the other meats that were to be included. The egg and onion portion, which is what substantiates the egg foo young, were actually quite good. 4/5 I'd say. Nice and soft and eggy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside. I've been coming to this spot for many MANY years (since I was a kid) It's changed owners/managers (?) several times but the food has stayed pretty consistent. I had been craving the Beef Won Ton Soup. I get this soup a few times a year because it's comforting to me and I don't share with my family - lol. Stars aligned and family had other plans for dinner and they were open (they were closed last time I wanted this soup) Called in advance and placed an order. They are super nice and friendly and not to say they knew ME but they knew it was me who ordered the soup when I went to pick it up. I got my soup and have to say: the flavor is still there. I still enjoyed it BUT there is only one reason why this wasn't a 5 star review...the won tons were kind of mushy. Not at all what I was used to. I ordered Honey Walnut Prawns and a Dinner Special - Sweet and Sour Pork , Broccoli Beef , BBQ Pork Fried Rice and Fried Prawns . This place is somewhat of a hidden gem in terms of being in the San Leandro area. It's not in a great location but the food and value you get from it is spot on. Must try the 3 dishes for around $30 deal. Worth it imo. I think the only really thing I would improve is the outdated atmosphere. The carpet gotta go and the wall paper too. read more

This is your typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. Located in a plaza next to an asian market, crawfish joint, and some other random small shops. The parking lot can get pretty full. It was after the lunch rush so thankfully the restaurant was pretty empty. My experience here is....unsure? There's a separate menu that lists 3 items for $21. The stuff listed were just the typical and plain dishes. If you take a look at their actual menu, you can pick out some really good dishes for the same price. Don't forget to look at the specials menu behind the register. Half is in Chinese (I bet it's the good stuff), and the rest is in English. The portions are very generous and the food was actually really good. Not sure if I'll be back. Located in the Manor shopping center, this place serves "homestyle" Cantonese style Chinese food. A lot of great choices on choices on their lunch menu which is offered daily. This place also has 3 for $21 dishes which also offers a great selection. The prices here are very affordable with average size portions. We ordered orange chicken, salt and pepper Tofu, Singapore noodles and scrambled egg with prawns chow fun noodles. The taste was average but won't order again. Law already went here years ago and he told us that this the place where he and his golfing buddies hang out and eat because the foods are delicious and they never put MSG on it. We were served promptly and the food came quickly. The server is great and she knew that we're all famished so served us good. The bill came to around $50.00 plus tax and tip and not bad I may add. This and we have a ton of leftovers and we went home with about 3 big doggy bags to eat later on. Their foods were spot on and really no MSG to be tasted! I admire restaurants like this and they don't cheat you for the volume of food is also spot on! Bitter melon and beef in black bean sauce is my true favorite followed by there dried fried salt and pepper ribs. Smash and dip the ribs into there sweet and sour sauce. I tried their beef stew and ive gotta to say that its one of the best ive tried. Service is ok but their food is excellent. Dont forget to try their hong kong style crispy fried chicken. After searching Yelp for nearby Chinese restaurants, we hit up Great Wall today for lunch. They offer a nice lunch menu that has a lot of variety with all dishes are under 6$. It was tasty enough for the price, I guess - our total only 10.35$ and there was enough food to fill us up. We ordered Broccoli Beef over rice - 4.75 - and Lunch Combo #3 - 4.95 - (pork chow mein, kung pao chicken and 2 fried shrimp). Honestly, it was only ok because the price was so low. I'd expected more because of the 4-star rating. The Chow Mein was no bueno, but the broccoli beef and kung pao chicken were good but typical. Because it's so close and so inexpensive, I might be willing to give it another shot but, I won't be rushing back. Might see ya there! read more

I have lived in the sleepy Washington Manor area of SL for a little over a decade and we just now, thanks to the boyfriend with his knack for locating hole in the wall gems, enjoyed family dinner there. We were impressed. Our hostess/waitress was friendly and clearly has great rapport with the regulars. We ordered potstickers, hot n sour soup, chicken chow mein,curry beef, and orange chicken. Everything was delicious and NOT greasy. The potsticker filling was had a handmade sausage taste to it, not the usual frozen stuff you find in most places. We are less than a mile away. My brother works in the area and found this diamond in the rough buried in a neighborhood. He described the restaurant as making Chinese Comfort food and I would agree. My brother and I grew up eating at two long time Oakland Chinatown restaurants that were down home type cooking, excellent prices and quantity. Sadly, they are both closed but they were both long time businesses. The 1st being Lock Goon and the 2nd King Wah (in business for over 40 years and well known for having the best won ton soup ever plus many other dishes). Great Wall is similar to both those restaurants. Good service, excellent prices, great quantity of food and good food. I had the Pork Won Ton soup and House Fried Rice, the won ton is very good but not as good as King Wah (but that is saying a lot) and the fried rice was flavorful and moist. My brother and his co-workers eat there on a regular basis and I plan to go back and try other dishes. This might have to be my replacement Chinese Comfort Food cooking for King Wah...I have been searching to find a replacement for awhile. read more

Flavor does lack a little, more toward the lightly salted side but great for those who don't have a heavy/bold taste. We're regulars here; so we love this place. The owner & two servers adore our toddler. Whenever we go there, they give her a couple slices of oranges & extra fortune cookies. Of course, we only let her eat one cookie; but, it's nice that they're not your typical Chinese restaurant. They're genuinely friendly & have great service. The Great Wall restaurant has been providing very good and much more traditional, (which now a days is super rare) Chinese cuisine. The food is excellent and worth the three dollars extra per person. The bulk of their business is done later in the day since they stay open late into night, probably until about 10pm some nights, (which is an absolute anomaly in San Leandro). Everything I have ever had at the Great Wall restaurant has been great and filling. I usually go there and buy a bunch of food for a night where my friends and I are all going to hang out. I highly recommend it for large get togethers and even when it's just dinner for two. For two people you should expect to pay a little under $20 depending upon how much you order, (for me and my partner it's usually about $16, but then again she's little). I usually stick to chicken and vegetable dishes, just because those are the very good here. It is usually a little empty but that shouldn't be a concern, the staff are very friendly and personable and the decor is very nice. The food usually doesn't take but 15 minutes or so before it's all done and they do take out so it's always good for movie nights and other occasions of the sort. The prawns lacked flavor and had too much water chestnuts. I had to add soy sauce to make it worth eating. I still think this is a good Chinese restaurant but there are some misses. When you arrive inside you get the impression this is a solid authentic Chinese place. Wrong. Anything fried here is using that same cheap batter at cheapo Chinese spots. Disappointing. There is an art to honey walnut shrimp and Peking spareribs on the fry. The positive was the crispy chicken. They should use that type of fry on other items. I drank a lot of water and ate rice which I don't think is a good indication. Also multiple times we were ignored maybe because I spoke English and I'm full Chinese. I also judge a Chinese spot by basic noodles and these didn't taste right. There are more options around, I'm sorry. If people have a problem servicing you because you don't speak Chinese, you shouldn't be open. I agree with that other review about not speaking Chinese and I am Chinese. read more

This is the worst restaurant we ever experienced in Bay area. Bad service attitude and management. The restaurant didn't care about customer. Father's Day came and said 20 min wait and pointed we will be next for 'that table' Only one family ahead of us. After 40 min wait, carelessly gave the table to three people who just enter the restaurant and didn't say anything to us until we asked. They lied that three people called yesterday for the reservation. However, this is a table for 10 people and there is another 10-people table which was empty all the time as the table had a reserved note on it. We are not fool. However, they have modernized and feature a special dinner blue plate special menu of thee dishes for $21. We came early on a Sunday night and it's a good thing we did because they place became packed later in the evening with both Chinese and non-Chinese patrons. Service seemed a bit overwhelmed. We got nine dishes for $63, added on one dried fish fried rice dish, and fed eight adults. Where else can you do that? Good deal. One last thing. It got really crowded and boy, was it noisy.
