First off, the atmosphere was good. What missing on New Years Eve was either live or recorded Greek music to make it festive as befitting a holiday. When you call something a taverna, you hope for more atmosphere. As for the food, the Spanikopita was in small pieces and dry with little feta cheese added. My dining partner and I split the vegetarian Moussaka, which had a powdery textured cheese (béchamel) on top, a thin layer, not what I have had in the past where this layer was thicker. The Greek coffee I had with dessert was good, the baklava could have used more butter between the phyllo layers, fell apart was too crumbly and not moist with honey or syrup. Amazing food and service! Went in for Sunday lunch and surprisingly it was pretty quiet but this place is usually packed! I ordered the Lamb Souvlaki and the other dish was a Solomos Sharas (small plate of salmon, which honestly was a pretty big portion for a small plate!) The service was awful. I took my girlfriend here for our anniversary. Big mistake! The waiter asked me if I can tip in cash before serving anything! He opened our wine bottle, left the wrapper on the table and didn't pour the wine. He placed my entree on the other side of the table where no one was seated and said "here's your fish" and walked away. On top of that the food was mediocre at best. I've had better food at a diner. A group of us came in for dinner as we all were in the mood for Greek. When we arrived we were promptly seated for our reservation although in retrospect we did not need them as it was very quiet for a Friday night. The waiter promptly brought out some warm, herbed pita bread and some ice buckets for our beer. We opted for the hummus, grilled octopus and the tavern chips (fried eggplant and zucchini slices). All of the appetizers tasted freshly made although the chips could have used more salt. The general consensus was that the tzatziki sauce was very good and that the octopus was also very well prepared. For my entrée I opted for the gyro platter which came with fries, pita, salad and sliced lamb gyro. The meat was a little too dry for my tastes but other than that it was good. It was large enough that even sharing some with the wife we still ended up taking some home. She enjoyed her shrimp kebobs but felt they were also somewhat dry. Service was friendly and the prices for the amount of food you received was very good. Another plus is the on site parking which is a rarity in Montclair. read more

We just went in for something light and chose to pick from the appetizers menu. We made reservations for the day my daughter graduated Montclair state. YEAH!!! We love Greek food and we were excited to try this restaurant. We also prefer BYOB places. We started off with four appetizers, hummus, Melitzanosalata, tzatziki dip and an apricot and goat cheese appetizer called Katsikisio. We absolutely loved all of them! Our waiter Greg was extremely attentive and professional and never let our glass get empty. For dinner some of us had the lamb kebabs, one of us had a chicken platter and the rest of us had the Gyro platter. Delicious!!! And the owner gave complementary shots of Grappa in celebration of our daughters graduation! We highly recommend this restaurant. Some of the best Greek food (and best service!) I have had in NJ. We ordered the grilled Cypriot cheese for an appetizer, which was delicious. Since I am a vegetarian I ordered the appetizer sampler for two as my entree, which was more than enough food and as long as you're not craving a hot dish, provides a nice variety of some Greek classics. The tzatziki and hummus were both excellent, and their dolmas were the best I've ever tasted. We also had the cheesecake baklava for dessert, which was a tasty spin on a classic Greek dessert. This place is a bit out off the beaten path from many other restaurants of its caliber in Montclair, but the service was excellent and the staff was incredibly kind. Changed, for the worse. We asked if they are under new ownership, but they said "no". I just can't believe what had happened to this place over the years. This used to be our favorite, go-to place to eat wonderful Greek food in town. Now sadly, this food barely passes for Greek. 1, they got rid of the Skordalia dip and the wait staff didn't even know what Skordalia is. 2, the grilled calamari was not "grilled"; no char marks. Looked reheated or stir-fry. 3, the grilled veggies resembled sautéed Chinese veggies. 4, the greek roasted lemon potatoes had zero lemon flavor and were basted in mustard (not a staple of Greek cuisine), 5, there was a dirty wine glass left in the corner of our booth 6, I could go on. Last night we ordered the seafood dish to share and spanakopita (spinach pies). Half the seafood was very good, the other was over cooked :/ the spinach pies were yummy, but the sesame seeds on top take away from the flavor. Sad update! Went back today for lunch. We were the only table in there. Placed our order at 12:10. It was freakishly quiet for about 5 minutes. During this time, we got to watch the entire staff eat lunch over the prep area. Watched one guy actually comb his hair. This place is okay...not great, but okay. I've been here a handful of times with a friend of mine for lunch on the weekend (Sundays mostly) and it has always been okay. We typically split the cold appetizer platter (plenty for two or three people to share) along with some soups and salads for our main dish. My gripe with this place is that a table for two is way too small. By the time we have our appetizer platter, our pitas, and our drinks, there is no room left for anything else. The ice bucket for the wine stays on the floor and we have no room for our salads and soups. It's a combination of the dishes being oversized and the table being too small. We find ourselves taking over the neighboring table, provided no one is sitting at it, of course! That being said, we can take our time BS-ing and we don't feel like we're being rushed. What happened? I've been to Greek Taverna a number of times over the past couple of years, and it has slowly, steadily gone downhill. Last night pushed me over the "I'm not going back" edge. Ordered a chicken platter to pick up. Got the food, brought it home -- still hot. So psyched. Open my container, and half the chicken wasn't cooked through. Had to throw it away. The amount of raw herbs -- didn't recognize it, thyme maybe? -- thrown over the salad greens overpowered everything and made the salad inedible.. The rice was good. I can make rice. I don't need to go out for rice. Overall, the reviews for this place are up and down -- and while every place can have an off night here and there, when it comes to food not being cooked, I'm moving on. read more
