The staff is certainly friendly. The food is good...I'll give it that, but I wish I had noticed the "we don't wear masks" sign before we ordered. There is a reason Covid is spreading like wildfire across the country..... The primary reason for restaurant personnel to wear a mask is to protect others. It's basic hygiene. If this establishment does not understand this basic concept, it makes me wonder what other hygiene-related matters they see as a "personal choice" and simply choose to ignore. We were in Amarillo visiting family, and my nephew suggested this place for dinner. I have traveled down the I27 many times and never noticed this restaurant. All together there were 14 of us and the service was very good. There were about ten different menu selections at our table and no complaints about any selection. Well since I have been craving a really good chicken fried steak for a long time, and a good one is very hard to find, I decided to try theirs. I do admit the food was average, but it was by far not the best chicken fried steak in Amarillo. I did have a little bit of a wait time, standing in the doorway with no one helping me and no where to sit. The steak was average tasting, the baked potato was mildly cold. I tried the green chili macaroni and cheese, and I did not like it. I had to sit by the kitchen, and it was extremely noisy with Conversation and somewhat disruptive to my meal. Would I say this is a good restaurant? It probably is. Maybe I should've ordered the regular steak. Will I go back and try to again? Considering how many other restaurants there are in Amarillo, and how it was a little bit out-of-the-way and a little bit of trouble to get to this place, probably not. I have eaten there twice. Wait staff is on the ball. First time was a burger not the best way to gudge cusine but was a solid effort. This time I had the signature county friend steak, almost went with the samples of the three types but I am a purest. I am going to rate it a 5 out of 10. My wife and I had a bad experience there years ago. We both ordered the KC Strip, when they brought the food something didn't look right but it smelled ok--so we ate. Well-- about 20 minutes later we both became violently ill, and I mean ILL. This was the only place that we ate that day with the exception of our breakfast (which was in deferent places). It took us 48 hrs to recover. It took a week before we could even think of that meal again, an in doing so I called the owner/mgr R. Robinson and notified him of what had taken place. He said he had no other complaints that day and said he didn't think it was his food that made us sick. But as some one who's eat'n out a lot I knew where, I just didn't know how we had became so ill. He then asked us to come back and try it or another meal again sometime. Months past, we finally felt like we could go back, we ordered chicken fried stk, and it was good enough for our taste... though we could still remembered the last encounter fresh in our minds. When we went to pay out, we mentioned what had taken place last time we were in and that R. Robinson and I spoke on the phone about it, I stated that he asked us to come back and give them another try. Well, I expected him to at least come and speak to us, maybe buy one of our meals and apologize for our horrible past experience. But the word was... no, he's busy and there is no comp on your meal. I became very upset with the casher and told her I wasn't going to pay for the meal at this point because we were both violently ill for two days and it took a full week for us to get completely over the experience. And... if he was going to treat us with this kind of disrespect we would give it back in return. We walked out... never to return to this day!!! And, needless to say I didn't pay for the meal. I'd seen this place on a couple of different TV shows and it always looked interesting. Since I was stopping in Amarillo for the night I was excited to give the place a try. It happened to be a Thursday night and bitterly cold so there were very few patrons in the restaurant. Our table of 7 was sat promptly and greeted by our waitress. (She was sassy but in a fun way) It was so cold their soda lines had frozen. This is when I learned that they're BYOB! Lucky for me I had ice cold beer in the car! Tea and water were the only choice of beverage due to the temperature being 1* outside. Half of the table ordered the combination fried steaks. All came cooked to perfection and caused table debate over which one was best. (My favorite was the jalapeño) We didn't order dessert but the peach cobbler looked amazing. A member of our party ordered the paddy melt and declared it good but, he also ordered a side of beans and cornbread which was declared awesome! I traveled from California to Amarillo on business. My client suggested I try this place and I absolutely LOVED it. The chicken fried chicken I had "Jalapeno Jack Chicken Fry", was to die for. Hands down the best chicken fried chicken I ever had and that sauce was so so delicious. I was a little worried about the word" jalapeno" in the sauce, since I can't tolerate too spicy, but the waitress recommended and I went for it. Get green chiles on just about any American dish you'd like. The food's good. If you're adventurous, try a buffalo burger. The beer's really good too - you can take your own beer into the restaurant. Use a cooler or just grab a six-pack. One evening when a now-defunct restaurant in Canyon reneged on a party reservation I made, Green Chile Willy's took our group in and made for a great evening. I came to Amarillo for school and will be leaving soon. I can honestly say that this restaurant is the place I will miss the most. I have been here six times now and it has never disappointed, every person I have recommended Green Chile Willy's to has raved about as well. Service isn't a big thing to me, I prefer value and quality but here the service is always excellent. The staff always seems genuine and happy that you're there. FOOD: The green chile chicken fried chicken is my personal favorite. I love the green chile gravy they used to top their chicken fry. The Jack chicken is also very good, but I come to Green Chile Willy's for the Green Chile Chicken Fry every time. Sides are also wonderful, my favorites are the mashed potatoes and sidewinder potatoes (Big spiraled potato wedges that are fried) The portion sizes are very plentiful. I come here with my wife as a treat occasionally and one plate is always the perfect amount for the both of us. I will try to visit this place quite a few more times before I leave!
