I work a lot and have two dogs, one of which is a young Lab, so my evenings are spent breaking his spirit with toys and tennis ball chasing. Allow me to discuss why this pizza is great. The crust is handmade - it's chewy, crispy, perfect amount of salt and flavor. The sauce is very fresh-tasting; light, a little sweet, a little tang. And the cheese is GREAT - real cheese, flavor, a little greasy (a necessity, and it's not too greasy). The toppings are very high quality as well - sausage is real italian sausage with the appropriate fennel taste. Onions are always sliced thin for some nice sweetness and crunch. Pepperonis are like little cups. There's a pizza called the Chicken Siciliano that's AMAZING - chicken, feta, herbs, spicy peppers, onions and garlic butter - you gotta try it! After reading all the reviews on this place, I was ecstatic about placing an order for delivery. My first thought was to make sure to get myself an order of their famous lantern bread. And we did. And it tasted like the breadsticks from Papa John's. What a huge freaking bummer. So we started off with a deep dish pizza with green olives, pepperoni, onions and extra cheese. I really liked that it came cut into squares. It was hot and tasty but I've had better. Much better. I even prefer a simple Papa John's regular cheese to this. My husband, on the other hand, really enjoyed it. So, it might have just been a personal preference. We also ordered a 10 piece order of wings. They didn't ask me about a level of spiciness so I just assumed they were going to be mild. They were ridiculously hot and drenched in so much sauce that I had to pat them down with a paper towel. The delivery took close to 55 minutes to arrive and after ordering a Mountain Dew, they sent us with a Mello Yello 2 liter. My new go to pizza place for take-out and delivery. Toppings are thick cut and plentiful. Crust is crisp, crunchy and delicious. Sometimes you want good pizza that isn't pretentious, and that's what you get here. This is the same pizza as the sit-down Green Lantern on John R. to be sure, but you don't have to deal with the families and tight quarters. They have a good selections of standard toppings and a few specialty pies which come in handy when you're indecisive. Be careful if you're picky about crusts, as some of these pies are deep dish by default. It doesn't bother me, but just make sure you specify when you order. 45 minutes delivered more or less. I'm really bummed about updating this review with 2 less stars. It's actually been awhile since we've ordered from Green Lantern. We tend to jump around since there are several pizza places in the area. Our sweet neighbors gave us a gift card to Green Lantern, so we decided to use it. First issue I had was trying to order online from my phone. It was way too involved, but I figured it was worth it if we order again. From what I could see on my iPhone, it only gave the option to pay at delivery. Since I had a gift certificate, I wanted to call to make sure they'd accept it for delivery. When I called, I must have gotten the new kid. He wasn't sure how to deal with the gift card for delivery & struggled through the call. I ordered an X-large pizza with 2 toppings & Lantern bread. I asked for well done bread and extra sauce. When the pizza arrived, the toppings were pretty scarce and the pizza was overloaded with cheese. The Lantern bread was definitely not well done & pretty doughy. The sauce is very sweet and lacked flavor. Since I have had several pizzas in the area, I wasn't really impressed. Luckily, you shouldn't have that problem at Green Lantern. The Detroit style deep dish is a perfect symmetry of dough, crust, fresh toppings, and cheese/grease. FRONT-LINE WORKER SAVED BY PIZZA! I take my scrubs off to the staff at this location. After working over a 14+ hour shift for the 4th day in a row I was wound pretty tight. I made a mistake ordering online (I wanted to use the 20% coupon for my first online order). I carried the pizza out of the store, by the time I got home I had eaten a slice (square) in the dark driving home, it was amazing, really hit the spot. Basically they gave me an all cheese pizza. I asked the guy who showed me the pizza and he didn't have an answer. Green Lantern claims to have the best pizza in town. I don't know about that but it is good. It's your typical greasy, deep dish, pizza that'll have your average person full over a 2-3 slices. With that said, you can get just as good if not better pizza from Shields or Buddy's for the same price without having to deal with the hassle written below... Reason for 2 stars...this places needs to get with the times...they should actually call it Green Dungeon as you walk in and it's very dark and you get hit with smoke as there's NO non smoking section. Perhaps they are trying to hide the waitresses leather faces as they are all ancient. I don't know. Ageism at it's best : ) . I would not bring my son here as I don't consider this place kid friendly. First off I am reviewing the original crust. The deap dish from GL is not the original recipe. So I suggest sticking with the classic. From an 8 year old child to my grandparents...when someone is introduced to the GL, they ask...where did you get this pizza? It is F'in amazing. The Royal Oak location does not use the brick oven like the original in Madision Heights. So to ensure your pie is done right. Order the pizza well done. This will ensure crispy peps and a nice crunch. Trust me. If you fail to do this, your pizza could be a little flimsy. I must comment on the person who complained of grease. This is pizza. Over sauced one day and under sauced the next time. Today I was overcharge and when I asked about it the counter guy was SO rude I just took my two dollar loss. The pizza was again OVER sauced- to the point it was barely edible. The reuben was just bits of corned beef. It was decent but I prefer slices of meat rather that the scraps off of the slicer. I have a big family that eats dinner together nightly, including some teenagers, so great inexpensive dinners that please everyone are hard to come by. The Green Lantern on John R is nice for sit down, but being a family on the move, this location is fast and friendly when we need take out! Colin and the other staff that work there are super amazing! They are very accommodating...they cook the pizza exactly as we ask even with special requests. They get what extra sauce or extra cheese means, unlike other pizza places in the area. Speaking of toppings, the CHEESE...omg...their cheese is so amazing and gooey and wonderfully melty. I can't even handle it. Their sauce is good and tomatoey...not too much extra spice added keeping things nice and natural just like I like it. They have a good variety of toppings...I am a vegetarian and I have options even though I prefer just plain cheese from there...so good. My niece LOVES their pepperoni. The cheese bread is also delicious...you know, because the cheese. I really like cheese...sorry. They have other items to choose from as well if you have someone in your family who isn't a pizza fan, like my father. After a hard day of labor, we used our welcome wagon free pizza coupon to try Green Lantern. The pizza was for a 2 topping large. We added some extra toppings and a garden salad. I was a little disappointed with the choice of side items basically they only had chicken wings or bread. I was impressed with the delivery service. On a Saturday night we got a pizza delivered in about 30 minutes. The delivery guy was friendly and patient while we looked for coupon and a wallet to pay for our salad and upgrades. We got the thin crust. It was perfectly cooked with crispy edges on the meat. I was especially fond of the crust which was chewy in a good way.
