We felt like we were in o.n East Lansing's best kept secret. The dining area is so cozy and fun. 5 stars on the vibe! We came on trivia night but had no problem finding seats at the bar. Our bartender, Stevie, was welcoming, knowledgeable and attentive. We ordered the special -- 2 beers, pretzel and a pizza for $30. The beer cheese and pretzel were delicious! The beers were delicious -- my husband loved the hazy and I loved the Red Ale. We will definitely be back and look forward to trying the burgers and craft cocktails! There's so much for everyone on the menu. Highly recommend!

I am a dark beer person, so that is what I look for when ordering. They had a Tiramisu Stout and I chose that. Tiramisu, I'm thinking pastry, espresso along with the maltiness of a stout but I did not get that. There was no coffee and it had a bitter finish that lingered. The beertender was willing to swap me out for their Amber. It was a better choice and to style. The space itself was nice, plenty of seating and a good view of the brew equipment.

A big group needs space and a huge menu so everyone can actually find something they want to eat. The college aged kids working the tables were running around trying their absolute best to keep up with the drink orders and the food. It took forever for anything to arrive, but honestly that part is understandable with a crowd our size. Things started getting weird when the entrees showed up before the appetizers and salads. I dug into my stuffed Chicago style pizza and noticed it was barely warm. Even stranger, it was sitting in this unbaked pan on top of some weird tray keeping it off the bottom. There was zero crusting on the pan at all, which makes no sense for a pizza that is supposed to bake for thirty minutes. It was just a lukewarm disappointment. Then the night took a massive turn for the worse. Halfway through the meal, the guy sitting right next to me jumped up because he saw a bug. He lifted his pizza up, and a live cockroach came running out across the table. One of our friends had to trap the thing under a glass. The whole table went into a frenzy, so we called for the manager. When he finally showed up, he was completely nonchalant about the fact that a live roach just crawled out of our dinner. He gave us a casual apology and walked away. After waiting around for another half hour, we spotted him just casually wiping down other tables. We had to confront him again to see what was being done, and he just brushed us off by saying the waitress would handle it. He comped a few minor things, but left almost the entire bill full. We had to push him a third time because half the table lost their appetite and refused to pay for food that came out of a roach infested kitchen. He threw a small discount at us, but still forced everyone to pay for their tabs. While we were trying to settle up and just get out of there, the staff started opening up to us. Our waitress told us she was quitting in a week because this kind of stuff happens constantly, and she was tired of dealing with the fallout. Another waiter mentioned it was only his third day on the job and he was already planning to jump ship. To top it all off, we walked past the kitchen and office area on our way out and the sheer lack of cleanliness explained everything. Unless you want a side of live pests with your lukewarm pizza, absolutely skip this place.

My nephew…read moretold me about this place and told me to get the dry pot, so checked the place out while visiting EL. I looked at the menu and for the dry pot, you need to select a min. of seven items from the menu. If doing dry pot, let the staff know, as there's a separate menu for it. I went with med. spice, added: squid x 2, rice noodles x 2, shrimp x 2, beef brisket x 2, pork belly x 2, baby bokchoy x 1, chinese cabbage x 1, egg plant x 1, dry tofu x 2, & enoki mushroom x 1 Yes, added a lot and it's because the menu was not helpful. Lot of the items are singular, couldn't tell if "Squid" meant 1 or 1 serving. If it was 1 serving, how many squids came in a serving? As I wasn't sure, some of them I ended up ordering two. IE: Shrimp, I got 2 orders, there were 9 or 10 shrimps... had I know 1 order was equal to 5 shrimps, I would have ordered just 1. I wish they would update their menu to reflect the topping items so the customers know how many comes in a order. My bill came out to $70, yeah, it can get expensive! It took some time to get the food... but because I ordered lot of items, the food that came out was good for 5 people :) It was good, loved the medium spice and definitely hit the spot. Oh and yes, had leftover and took it home. I thought I was going a good job of eating, but barely made dent in the plate. I brought the leftovers home and had two more meals out of it. If you are in EL area, definitely visit the place and if you go, go with friends to try other offerings. If you are solo diner and ordering dry pot, only order one item of each from the list and 7 items from the list will be plenty for one person. Three stars for now.

We only stopped because some of the other places such as HopCat & ElAz were packed. Harpers was only about 1/4 full which was surprising before a weekend game. We were seated right away but there was one delay (and excuse) after another as to taking so long to get drinks & the order placed. 25% full was apparently an unexpected rush because we kept hearing how shorthanded they were. Anyway, I did post an extra star due to the host keeping us informed and taking the initial order, just to keep things moving. During our stay the table next to us had two groups back to back just get up & leave due to the crappy service. The food itself was good and no complaints there, but it's obvious that management has had no clue for quite some time on how to give proper service. Yes, it is a college town bar/brew pub but that's no excuse for such mis-management. We were lucky that we had an extra 30 minutes to spare or else we would also most likely had picked up early and left. There's just too many decent places in the downtown E/L area that do take care of customers and if you're looking to get proper service it would be best to try those other options.

I was standing at the bar near the entrance with my friends when I suddenly felt something wet hit my hand. I looked over in complete disbelief and realized a guy next to me was so intoxicated that he was literally urinating at the bar. I had just been peed on. Naturally, I yelled for security and demanded they remove him immediately. They did escort him out, but what happened next was even more unbelievable. The guy happened to be friends with one of the employees, and instead of treating me like the victim, security accused me of trying to start a fight because I was understandably furious after being urinated on. A few minutes later, they kicked me out too. Once outside, I saw the same guy talking with several of the bouncers. That's when I heard one of them say, "You have to stop getting kicked out for pissing in the bar." Hearing that made it sound like this wasn't even the first time this had happened. Being urinated on inside a bar is one of the most disgusting experiences I've ever had, but what made it even worse was the staff's response. Instead of looking out for the customer who had just been peed on, they removed me as well. Management seriously needs to reevaluate who they're hiring and how situations like this are handled. I will never be coming back.
