Ridiculously healthy food that tastes good. The staff are always really nice and the food is fast (you order at the counter, but they have tables too). I am glad they're on Mealpal, and I also see a lot of regulars greeted warmly. It's just a cute little oasis that is too friendly to be of this city/neighborhood. I have been coming here for 17 years. It is my favorite meal in New York. Yes, it is a paper plate topped with lettuce, unseasoned chicken, and steamed vegetable dumplings - I can't explain, but it's stunning. The tahini sauce is the best I've ever had, plus the bottles of soy sauce and hot sauce you're meant to drench the food in. Anyone who doesn't love this place was absolutely born after 1990 and is poisoned by the convoluted flavor combinations of places like Sweet Green and their accompanying vaguely Scandi and Sans Serif aesthetics. Beyond being my favorite meal in New York, the vibes are impeccable. At some point, they tried to slightly modernize with new signage but no need! This is the kind of whatever New York place - random plants, mismatched furniture, cellophane wrapped cookies and muffins - that I sorely miss with every new all-white-everything coffee shop that opens. The food: Combo specialty is 5 light, but delicious dumplings with veggie filling + multigrain rice with friend rice vegetables (pretty standard, not good, not bad) + steamed veggies (veggies taste pretty fresh, but nothing mind blowing). Overall, the food is what you would expect of a good vegan restaurant - the tastes are light, but the meal is filling and makes you feel good. I had the baked salmon with brown rice and they substituted veggies instead of a salad without a problem. The Banana Chocolate-Chip Bar they sell is PHENOMENAL, it is moist, filling, has great flavor and is priced well at $3.55 I will definitely come back here. Everything is made with best health in mind by hand, nothing is processed, it's all fresh food that your body will respond to favorably. Their packaged snack/drink section has things you might not find at Whole Foods, perfect for a post workout snack. They have a big Smoothie Menu posted inside but their food menu is printed. It's easy to think that all they serve is Smoothies but there's an extensive food menu but really, it should be posted prominently. I think this spot and Rainbow Falafel on E17th are now my favorite healthy food spots in the Union Square area. I know family-owned spots like this need our support to make it through this pandemic. I've been going to Village Yogurt for over a decade and am always super pleased with my meal. I'm not a vegetarian, nor do I love healthier foods, but I LOVE this place. Whenever I'm in the Union Square area, I try and stop by to give one of my favorite spots in the city a little love. The Korean owners usually work the register (heads up: the older man is much nice than his wife) and the same Hispanic guy has been working the kitchen for years. While we never officially exchanged names, they all know me there and are always very friendly. For under $10, I usually order veg dumplings with brown rice or Chicken Fantasy. For an additional buck I can get a delicious oatmeal raisin cookie. FYI, they serve the heaping portions on one thin paper plate and give one napkin. Add a dash of hot sauce and Tahini and you're good to go. read more

VY looks kind of shady from the outside, but it's really fantastic. Village Yogurt is the best place in the city to get reasonably priced, quick, healthy food. I used to live right around the corner. Even though I felt like my life was unwinding at that time, this place was the great healthy pick-me-up (and hideaway)! This is the kind of food that makes you feel good, not bloated. I came in for lunch last summer and ordered the steamed vegetables & shrimp dumplings, and I've been coming back at least 3-4 times a week since. This is a delicious and healthy lunch in a perfect portion. They're currently redoing the interior to make it more quaint and approachable (new lighting, custom menu board, employees), but the food hasn't changed a bit! I miss the old counter girl (what happened to her?) but it's nice that the owners recognize us regulars. Some day the man will remember my order (shrimp #6, extra kale), but I don't mind as long as it stays so fresh and filling. I LOVE this place. Its exterior is plain and I've walked past it for years without it ever catching my attention. The decor is plain...a few wooden chairs and tables (plus the random headshots on the wall, as mentioned by another reviewer). If you are a health nut and extremely picky about the way your food is prepared, this place is for you. They have food that falls into vegan, vegetarian, no wheat, no sugar, no fat, and low sodium- among other categories. They steam a lot of the dishes, and the portions are big. Steamed chicken, vegetables, brown rice, dumplings...they've got it all. They serve their house dressing on the side, so your dish will never be doused with it if you like to eat light/low residue meals. They've also got a great selection of delicious salads, sandwiches, and shakes. Oddly, despite Village Yogurt's name, they only serve one type of frozen plain vanilla yogurt. It's a bit on the expensive side (around $3 for a small cup), it is pretty good and non-fat and low in sugar. A bunch of delicious vegan desserts on the counter round out the menu. The owner's smile and friendliness definitely keeps me coming back. He's a SUPER nice adorable little Asian dude who usually holds the fort down in the front while another man cooks in the back. He's so nice that even when the line starts to get a little crazy during lunch time, you'll never see his customers getting inpatient or pissed off at him. Sometimes he'll give you a free cookie too. I stumbled upon it, and was pleasantly surprised to walk out with some really flavorful, fresh kimchi, hemp oatmeal (creamy, yummy, and not overly "green" tasting), and kale salad (which is sitting in front of me now, the day after, looking every bit as fresh as it did when I purchased it). They do a good job of making a small store look somewhat spacious, tables aren't crowded, it's very clean, the shelves and cases are well-stocked with a good selection of healthy fare, and lots of freshly baked goodness. Are they borderline ridiculously overpriced for many of the items...even for the area? Yeah. But, in this micro-area which tends to be a black pit when it comes to finding quality - let alone healthy and clean! - food? Well worth just about every penny! The man behind the counter is very friendly and helpful in making a selection. You have more options if you eat chicken, but the vegetarian selections are solid too. The veggies came with a nice tahini dressing--slightly on the oily side but a nice highlight to the vegetables (kale, carrots, scallions, and so on), tofu, and rice. There's no ambiance, but it's cheap and filling. Grab an aloe drink or a coconut water and you have a virtuous meal on your hands. So i made my way down to this hole in wall restaurant. But, when I approached the counter this old Korean man greeted me with a great big smile. I ordered the combination plate with the banana shake. The plate came with brown rice, steamed veggies, tofu, and veggie dumplings. I would have to say very simple and quite delicious. I would of much rather had this then any fast food Chinese joint. They even had my favorite hot sauce (red devil). The banana shake I got was amazing. I would of never thought in this world that skim milk, yogurt, and bananas would taste so good. Village Yogurt is a jewel. It's so unassuming from the outset, but people who've been here (as you can see by the reviews) know that the food is good, and the service is honest and perhaps the friendliest I've ever known in the city. I've been eating there since about 1990. I almost always order the Everything Fantasy (I love those funny dish names) which includes steamed shredded chicken, steamed vegetable dumplings, steamed brown rice which has chopped vegetables in it, and steamed vegetables which include carrots, broccoli, kale and the crispest bean sprouts anywhere. But despite the fact that everything is steamed, the food has great texture and flavor, aided only by the black vinegar and soy sauce or tahini they provide either at the tables or with your takeout. Eating from here is something of a cleanse for me when I don't want anything unhealthy, and it always hits the spot. I don't know how vegan the food is, but you can look through their menu for variations on the combination of elements above to find a dish that will cater to your dietary requirements. I'm not a vegetarian, but this is the place I go to when I want a guilt-free lunch. In increasingly chain-store filled NYC, it's amazing to find food this good, and service this great, in such an unexpected setting. read more

I have been eating lunch here since 2008. I stopped going for a while, but I have returned to a healthier way of eating and the food is still slamming at Village Yogurt! My all time favorites are the #15 & #16 Both have baked chicken, steamed veggies, and tofu. The #15 has brown rice, and the #16 has salad. I can't forget to mention that the sesame sauce they include is phenomenal! Love it! I truly can say the food is prepared & cooked in the mornings, so it's fresh, and it's clean eating. How do I know? I asked in detail how the food is made every day! Plus, they also have organic juicing, so if you feel up to having a liquid lunch that's good for you, look no further. I had the worst service and food at this place. The register woman was on another planet. Didn't know what "vegan" meant when I asked if the lentil soup was vegan. She later handed me the juice meant for another customer and got yelled at by her manager. The lentil soup was completely flavorless. Literally just boiled lentils in clear hot water. My mom had the dumpling soup which was also completely flavorless. They accidentally gave me a little plastic container of sauce, and then rushed to take it back. The owners are adorable, and they push the fantasy plate for a reason. It might seem like steamed veggies and tofu would be boring, but I'm telling you, the combination of their homemade sauce and just the right amount of hot sauce makes this one of my favorite meals. Anyone who knows me well would not be surprised to know that I tried this place out. If you asked them to explain why, they would likely point to the following evidence: 1. Green smoothies. That alone should be enough indication why I like this place! I tried the almond greens, which is a mix of greens, banana, almond butter and flax seed. I literally finish this in less than 5 minutes because it's so tasty (and not too sweet!) Not badly priced at $6-7 a smoothie, though I guess I could technically make this myself and I actually like the ones I make better. 2. Dumplings. I LOVE the tofu and veggie dumplings here. The skin is thin (homemade quality) compared to other places that have thick , cakey dumpling sleeves. The filling is tasty and healthy! 3. Asian veggies. They are pretty bland by themselves because they are just steamed. I don't actually like the sesame sauce that they give you with it (would prefer something more on the carrot-ginger side or even more peanuty because the current sauce has a bit of a strange aftertaste that I can't quite put my finger on. But I do love that the veggies here are steamed and healthy, and that there's a ton of variety. Lots of seating. I really like this place. It's a cozy mom and pop shop with a crunchy earthy feel to the place. The protein smoothies are delicious and anyone who eats a meal here must try the dumplings. They give you a generous portion of vegetables, rice, tofu and dumplings and salad. The sauce is nice and has a mild flavor. These taste pretty awesome. My only negative are the vegan and gluten free deserts. They sound delicious from their descriptions on the display case and look appetizing, but when I tried the banana chocolate cake it had a weird synthetic aftertaste - like cardboard with stale laundry. Vegan treats line the counter, behind which the ever present owner (does he ever take a day off?) and his staff are always smiling.
