Yes, the menudo was delicious. The chunks of tripe were well cooked and the red broth was amazing. What made the meal that much better was the service, attentive and courteous. This place has a wonderful atmosphere. The employees are always on the go, making sure everyone is taken care of. On top of all of this the food is delicious. I always order the Chile Verde omelette. My family has very specific orders (picky family) and they always get it right! I'd like to call attention to our waitress from this morning, Joana. We mistakingly ordered the wrong thing and when it was brought to her attention, she immediately went back and brought out what we had intended to order (our fault). She was very attentive. This has become one out if good-to spots in uptown. We've been here probably well over 30 times in 3 years. I can't even really recall having a bad experience other than maybe slightly longer wait to get a check or a delay in getting our food because they were so busy. But you know what? This is the only place that serves a menudo almost as good as my mom's (you know I have to be partial to my mom's cooking). It's never too fatty and always so flavorful. I've also enjoyed their chorizo and eggs, chilaquiles, chile relleno omelette and chile verde omelette and I've never been disappointed. Truly a great family run business. Wanted to try a New Mexican food place and found this one based on the reviews. Very glad that we decided to eat here, the food felt and tasted like a home made meal. I enjoy trying New Mexican dishes, the enchiladas were good but sorry, I didn't take a pic, I will make sure to take one next time. The menudo was flavorful and enchiladas with the green sauce were cooked just right, they didn't fall apart as you cut into them. This place doesn't deserve even one star. This morning went there for first time because hubby said they have a good menudo. I don't know how it tasted because I didn't even tried, it was full of black 2-3 millimeters long hair that were sticking to pieces of meat!!! Not only mine bowl, but also my husband's as well!!! The waitress said that those were hair from cow. Seriously???!!! Menudos are made of stomach lining and since when there are hair growing in cow's stomach?!!! What a bullshit! There is no denying that the food here is good. I ordered the camarones al mojo de ajo, which was delicious. Towards the end of my meal, it dawned on me to look at the shrimp and I noticed that they don't clean them... So that means I ate shrimp poo. Lost my appetite after that. Would have given 5 stars, but not cleaning your shrimp is a deal breaker and I doubt I'll be ordering anything shrimp from here. The Greenleaf Deli is far from new. It has a new name but people who kick it old school know this used to be called "The Deli". I have been eating tasty and cheap breakfasts here since I started solids. The people who work here are all very nice and accommodating. The food is solid, good portions and great prices. They have weekday morning specials that are really good deals. Also, the "home-style" potatoes are greasy garlicky potato yumminess. There are crispy edges and lots of parsley, they really make the meal. Usually I have a "thing" about ordering ethnic food at a seemingly American place, like Mexican breakfasts @ IHOP bc they always fall short. But feel free to order menudo or carne asada here, the guys in the kitchen are cranking out the real deal. If you have kids this is a great place bc the food is really basic and the prices would be hard to beat. Plus, its very casual and the servers are used to families. I think I've found a new weekend brunch spot. The eggs Florentine were delicious here! I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and the one time I did try to come on a Saturday for lunch, they were coincidentally closed for that day. Well I'm glad I came back again. I really like the open layout of the dining room. It felt really spacious and airy. Service was great and our waters were always refilled. The menu consists of Mexican and American food with rotating daily specials. Salads, soups, entrees, breakfast, and brunch items. The menu was quite extensive. Bf and I shared the eggs Florentine ($8.95) and the soup, salad and half sandwich combo (`$7) Eggs Florentine - Loved that you could taste the hint of lemon in the hollandaise sauce. I didn't even know hollandaise had lemon in it until I looked it up. The bacon and spinach were cooked well and the poached egg was perfect. Also LOVED the side of potatoes. The potatoes were cut and layered (kind of like au gratin), seasoned and sautéed with bell peppers made them a delicious and hearty side. I was so busy scarfing down the eggs Florentine that the waitress looked at me funny because I had hardly touched the soup and salad that was sitting in front of me. I was leaning over and eating the bf's food instead. =P Soup, salad and half sandwich combo - opted for the chicken tortilla soup. Delicious. Wasn't too cheesy with chunks of chicken and the right amount of creaminess to the soup. Sandwich was swiss and turkey. Good too. And just a regular side salad. Healthy veggies. Sadly I haven't been to this place in a while . During my first couple months of pregnancy I was having a rough time holding anything down . I've always loved their menudo until I didn't . One day I sent my bf to grab some and he came home , I was sooooooo excited , only when it came down to my first couple bites I noticed something off . I kept getting little hair like texture in my mouth , so I turned on the light only to find little hairs everywhere in every spoonful in the menudo . I called and let them know , but they said that sometimes the tripe comes with little hair which I never heard about or never or had ever come up in any menudo I ate . But I looked it up & it did have a read on google about it . Since it was something I never came across I was grossed out I couldn't fathom eating it . Will def miss their menudo !! read more

10.23.11 about 9:30 am. Man it sucks to be the one person who has a less than ideal experience at a popular place like this but it is what it is. The only saving grace to our breakfast the other day was a young girl who served us, short little Latina, she had blond hair and was incredibly friendly and sweet. I'm totally bummed that I didn't get her name but she was the epitome of what a good server is, efficient, friendly and was tipped as such. On the other hand, the bus girl and the young dude at the register were cold, unfriendly and had absolutely no eye contact. The place is just like everyone has said, pretty, brightly painted, clean but sadly, only ONE bathroom for both sexes in a place that looks like it seats 60-70 people. I had chilaquiles, my husband had his usual ham and cheese omelet. It came with toast and lukewarm, very lightly browned hash browns and the 'omelet' was a joke. The ham and cheese omelet is the only thing my husband will ever eat when we go out so he has become an expert at what's good and what's not....and this was seriously lacking. The omelet itself looked like it had started it's life as an omelet but ended up being chopped up and scrambled by mistake. It also looked overly browned as though the egg had been left too long on the flat top. The true disappointment were my chilaquiles. Similar to what the other reviewer said, there was a strange, weird taste in the sauce covering the tortilla chips. Tasted very UN-homemade and basically it was just sauce over chips and sprinkled w/a light hand of cheese. The refried beans and rice were decent but that's about it. I think our server knew I was disappointed but I told her not to worry and still tipped her well as I've never been one to 'shoot the messenger.' We will probably never be back as we live to far away but I guess even the yelpers miss sometimes and hopefully their other food dishes are far better....why oh why didn't I follow my instincts and get the menudo?? read more

Truth be told, this review will be a little slim. I have only ordered one thing here and can't imagine ordering anything different. I can tell you, without reservation, that I really enjoy the chilaquiles....and there's not much to them. Hash browns and beans accompany crispy chips soaked in red sauce. I top them with eggs over medium. Simple. I think that's why they are perfect. The sauce is full of flavor, with just the right amount of spice. The hash browns are done well. The egg yolks pour over the chilaquiles and add a little richness to the depth of flavor. They are perfect. Simple and perfect. Aside from that, I can tell you the wife loves the pancakes. They are light but have a nice texture that reminds me of the Midwest. I have stolen a few bites here and there. There was a small foreign object in our salt shaker. Silverware was dirty. Food was bland and the server never came back to refill our drinks. I've had great lunches and dinners here, but it has become one of my favorite breakfast places. Eggs Florentine are my favorite, and I am picky when it comes to Eggs Benedict-like dishes. Get it with the lyonnaise potatoes. The staff is always friendly, and the place is kept very clean, with a bright, open atmosphere. Large parking lot in the rear. It's a good family restaraunt, and a great date restaurant when you want somewhere that's above reproach yet below $10. I don't know how they do it. The kitchen might take a while when they are busy, but I've noticed that they never seem to rush the cooking or compromise the quality no matter how slamming they are, they just keep cranking out the same consistently good food. I like coming here altho my boyfriend doesn't but he doesn't know good food and has a weak stomach so whatever this is my review. We've come here for breakfast and i usually order the nopales(cactus) with eggs plate, the Chilaquiles special and the cheese omelette, i liked them all and for lunch i always get the chicken fajita salad which i love! Its soo good and so filling..... maybe my boyfriend just orders the wrong things (always gets burritos and hamburgers, no matter what time of day) but he always ends up stomach issues afterwards lol! Everytime we go for the lunch and dinner sevice they would bring us chips and salsa but the last time we went they didn't so i'm not sure if they stopped doing that or maybe they just forgot to bring us some??? The one complaint i do have with this place is the service.... its just slow, even when there isn't alot of people there it just seems to be slow. I've been here a few times now, and each time has been a good experience. This cafe is nestled in the heart of Uptown Whittier, almost directly across the street from the Village. There is plenty of seating inside, with two dining rooms and two sets of bathrooms. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by a friendly server and prompted to have a seat at a table of your choosing. They present you with the standard menu along with a sheet of weekday specials. I've had their mucho grande ( I think that's what it was called) breakfast, which is two eggs, two sausages, two bacon strips, hash browns, and two pancakes. I'd compare this to a norms style breakfast, kind of basic but very much enjoyed. They make my egg whites so that they're not over done, and the pancakes are just what I expect, fluffy and delicate. This plate sets you back $6.99 on a weekday morning, weekend pricing is different if I'm not mistaken. I've also had the nopales and eggs, which comes with beans, Mexican style rice, and tortillas of your choosing. I like that it's not just straight up nopales (cactus), but is mixed with onions and some tomato along with the egg, making a scramble. It goes perfectly with the beans and rice when scooped up with a tortilla. To eat this the right way, put the utensil down! Enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed, scooped straight from the plate to your mouth by a tortilla vessel! This takes me back to mom's cooking for sure. Ordered with a cafecito (coffee) on the side, it's a damn good breakfast if you ask me. This will run you $5.99 on a weekday morning (not sure about weekend pricing). The food is by no means the best ever, but it has that comfort food feel that you can't deny. As for the service, every employee I've ever encountered has been very courteous, and I really have nothing bad to say about them. The establishment is always clean, which is a big plus. Menudo is good but not worth coming for alone. Staff is friendly, service is prompt. Bathroom are close to tables on one side of restaurant. You can sit away or on the other side and not notice bathrooms. Food is not great but it's not bad.
