You know this is the place to eat when there is a line out the door! Came with a large group of 8 and the food still came out super quick! I had the meat pie and it was excellent! Also tried the split chicken and it was good but a little dry. Make sure you save room for dessert it is the best part! Every single time I've ordered delivery from this place they have screwed up the order. Every single time. Today was the last straw. My wife friend and I went to Greggs for dinner. Great food service and Dessert. Our waitress was Ashley. She was excellent, however while we were waiting for our food. I was watching a Bus Boy (lousy title for a worker). He was clearing three tables and didn't see me watching him. I later found out his name. Roman. I have never seen a person work so diligently, cleaning everything. Table tops, seats back rests. Spraying disinfectant. As he walked away he stoped turned around and personally reviewed what he had done to make sure it was perfect. Wow I was impressed with him. Since Gregg's is such a Rhode Island institution, I really tried to like it! However, the drawbacks in terms of the quality of the food as well as the customer service do not outweigh the cache that comes with such an historic establishment. It appears that generally, Gregg's is understaffed, which means that servers have too many tables! In the four times I have been, the server has not checked in very often, if at all, and my friend and I had to be assertive to get the server's attention to get the check. The food (both sweet and savory) are, unfortunately, nothing to write home about. Most recently, I went to Gregg's late on a Saturday night an waited more than an hour for my food (to be fair, the waitresses seemed very frazzled, so perhaps the back of the house was understaffed as well). Liz was our waitress and she was amazing!! Super sweeet and knowledgable and not to mention efficient. Our party of 4 was seated promptly & our waitress came over right away and let us know she would be taking care of us. It was a party of 3 and our food came out quickly and correctly! I had the chicken Monterey and it was very good. We even ordered some dessert which was also just a good. Very happy with the service and our meals! read more

Gregg's is fairly consistent with food quality. Some days they get their Reuben inexplicably wrong (as in it's definitely not a Reuben and I don't know what it is), but most days the food is good. I usually think the food at Gregg's is okay, and there's never any major problems with the food. I usually just try to stay basic and get a burger or something. The food isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. I never throw away a ton of food unless it's really bad. But holy shit, there's a reason I say the only thing really good about Gregg's are the desserts. Must have been a crazy day over there. I asked for a burger medium, with cheddar cheese, and raw onions, (I can't stand cooked onions. the texture is weird to me. I prefer to have my onions raw and crispy, it creates a better flavor in the burger for me.) Sneaky folk gave me a burger that was basically falling apart the second or third time I picked it up. I don't think the patty was cooked medium, from the way it came apart like that. (I've had medium cooked burgers there before and I haven't had any major issues with them.) To top it off, they decided to pile on a stockpile of cooked onions, that are incredibly hard to remove and mask from a burger with a melted pile of cheddar cheese on it. The whole thing was a soggy damn mess, it got to a point where I absolutely gave up trying to hold the burger with two hands. So I just went to the kitchen to get a fork and knife, where I could at least try to eat some of the food. I felt like Gordon Ramsay on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Picking apart the food and trying to scarf it down. The only redeeming quality was the fries lmao. I had most of them and threw whatever mess was left of the burger away. The whole thing in my experience was an unfortunate waste of money. Thank God I still have a cake to make up for that shit show. I gotta start recording phone calls when I place takeout orders anywhere in case any other food related botches were to occur. Damn. I was looking forward to that burger too. Getting a buffalo chicken sandwich next time in the long, near future. The cakes are still bomb though. Will be back sometime. but most likely just because of the cakes specifically. Heads up: this review is based solely on their desserts and my experience getting them. I saw a fellow Yelper post a picture of desserts from Gregg's that looked amazing. I was instantly hooked and just HAD to give it a try. So, a few days later I pulled into the parking lot ready for some sweets. Upon walking in, you can tell that this place has been around for a while. It has that slight chlorine-table-cleaner scent with a little bit of a stale/stuffy/musty smell. Not a great first impression but I was not surprised by this at all because it reminded me a lot of a Friendly's. Anyway, my husband and I got in the takeout line for dessert. There wasn't anyone in front of us but we were not greeted for a while and when we were it was by a waitress that kept going back to wait on tables. When we finally placed our order for some cake and pie slices, the waitress still kept going to wait on tables (there were about 3 groups of people in the restaurant on a Saturday morning). So now we started getting frustrated because we were standing there looking quite silly waiting for our order. The waitress would cut a slice and leave to take an order or refill coffee. Anther gentleman came over and asked what we wanted to order and we had to point out our half-finished order sitting right there on the counter. Then the waitress came back to tell the gentleman our order. When he didn't package a slice of apple pie that we ordered, we told him and he grumpily replied, "We don't have any apple pie right now." Oooooook then. Would've been nice to know that when we ordered it about 15 minutes ago. Anyway...regardless of the rude and slow service, the dessert was incredible. The death by chocolate cake slice is as good as it looks and as good as everybody says it is. If you love chocolate as much as I do, you absolutely need to get a slice. The pecan pie was also incredible. So rich and dense and yummy. The prices are steep but the portions are large. Just about as much as dessert from Pastiche which surprised me. But what also surprised me was that I may like this chocolate cake better than Pastiche's and that is saying something. It was definitely worth waiting for (even though it was by no means busy) but not worth getting treated poorly for no reason. The dessert quality is extremely high and I was satisfied with that. Next time I will be sure to simply call ahead to avoid waiting awkwardly. read more

Gregg's is a hit or miss with me. Of course, staple Restaurant to RI, with the fish and chips on Wednesday and Friday. And I've had their prime rib once on a Saturday and it was really good. Sometimes you get hw fish and chips and they are great, other times they are small and over cooked, very dry. I tried their scallops for the first time... never again. The portion was tiny, they were over baked and dry, attaches I have a picture. This picture was taken before any food was eaten, yes that is the amount I was given. As a server I would never have given this to my customer, it looked pretty sad. Desserts are what they are famous for, I feel. Large pieces of decadent cake. Over all, don't hate, don't love it. Cake, cake, cake!! That's why we go to Gregg's. Not the fanciest cakes, but good solid cake in excessively large portions. I've never had a bad meal at Gregg's. It sort of seems to cater to the senior crowd. In fact, I learned about Gregg's from my grandmother. My grandmother is pretty hip for a grandmother, but she still loves herself a Monday night special with an all inclusive wine and meal combo. But we go on our own now whenever we're in the area. It's kind of a blend of pub and diner food. The service is friendly and fast, and they're quick to refill your (non-alcoholic) drinks without you having to ask. But let's face it. We're all really just there for cake. My husband and stepson love the death by chocolate cake. I have even been known to drive from Middletown, CT to RI, for the sole purpose of bringing home death by chocolate cake for them. I'm not a chocolate person, but there is still plenty to choose from at Gregg's. They have pretty much everything, from cupcakes to pies to cakes to pastries. The only thing they don't have is key lime pie. I'm not going to lie, it makes me a little sad. But I'm always happy with a big slab-o-cake, whether vanilla, lemon or the special pink cake I got last time that supported breast cancer awareness. Who doesn't love a giant slice of pink 3 layer cake with pink frosting and little pink sparkly stuff on top? Seriously. So if you're in the area, go to Gregg's. Gregg's is your typical American dinner place. You've got your usual fish 'n chips, scallops, lobster roll, sandwich options as well as your salads and desserts. Most of the food is pretty greasy and not the greatest for you health-wise, but you don't go hear for healthy food, so I guess that's ok. I think the best part of Gregg's is their cakes. The lemon burst cake is fantastic and the ultimate chocolate cake is godly. The frosting is always so incredibly thick. I would usually get a slice of cake to go, stick it in the freezer and slowly savor every single bit of frosting. One slice is big enough for two people. Yum! read more

So I took my class of young adults with disabilities to Greggs so they could practice all those important skills, ordering, asking for refills, paying, tipping etc. The waitress Mia (sp?) was fantastic. She was able to get each students order and she had such a relaxed, easy way about her. The manager, Luis, was also fantastic, allowing us to all have separate checks and making sure everything was set up and ready to go. The food was very good! I love Gregg's for their chocolate cake. Have you read Matilda? Remember that cake that little bruce eats on stage? Yeah. Just like that. Moist, covered in frosting. The frosting is generic, chocolate frosting, like what you would get from a can of frosting from Betty Crocker. Why I rated this 3 stars is because I recently stopped in for a full meal. I ordered the calamari Mediterranean salad. Fried calamari was crispy for the most part with a few soggy pieces, but so greasy. My salad was I tossed and I could not taste any dressing. It seemed as if my calamari grease was the dressing! Luckily a friend of mine had leftover balsamic from his salad so I added it to the calamari salad - much, much better. Gregg's! Consider taking better care of those salad leaves! They need love too. Next, our waitress was so eager to kick us out at 8:15.. I have been coming to Greggs for many years on North Main St. Last Friday night I was having dinner with my 98 year old mother and much to my surprise there were at least six mice running around. I came here with my boyfriend on a weekend trip. We are both from Connecticut. We sat down and ordered some drinks and desserts, the lemon burst cake and the chocolate mousse, which were delicious!! However, I'm writing this review because of our waitress, whose name I believe was Allie. My very animated boyfriend spilled his root beer everywhere in the middle of storytelling and Allie helped clean up the spill and asked if we would prefer another table, which we politely declined. Why dirty another table? She was super friendly and an absolute delight to talk to. Unfortunately her shift was over before we got a chance to properly thank her and another waitress stepped in to take over, who was also very lovely. We only visit Gregg's for deserts, which you may all know, are amazing! I typically go for the chocolate chip cookies or the brownie. The hubby always goes for cheesecake. I did wish that I could buy cookies individually. We have also purchased some of the cakes for family events, which have been a hit and are reasonably priced. Let's just say the average age was 78 at 1pm. The low booths and classic diner layout took me back to the 1980s and past visits to Denny's during that decade. My pastrami Reuben was fine - I liked the pastrami but the bread was not the classic rye I was hoping for, and was prepared like a grilled cheese.. the fries were classic diner steak fries. Old-timey restaurants like Gregg's can either go horribly wrong or delightfully right. At their worst, this type of diner can be dirty, bland, and stuffy. Luckily Gregg's is none of the above! Every meal starts with complementary warm rolls and pickle slices. Who can say no to that? The menu is something like 15 pages, but I settled on the portobello burger (can come with or without meat). The bun was a little soggy, but other than that everything was delicious! The vegetables were surprisingly fresh. The fries looked kind of undercooked but they were actually perfect! The service was super fast and attentive. Soft drinks and iced tea come with free refills, and they must have brought me 4 iced teas throughout my meal! But the best part of the meal was definitely dessert! Gregg's is known for the death by chocolate cake, which is a simple chocolate cake with rich chocolate frosting. This was seriously the best chocolate cake I've ever had! It's so fluffy and soft! Even though $7.50 is kind of steep for a single slice, it took me 4 sittings to finish it so I'd say it's worth the price! The other desserts I tasted were delicious too. The blueberry crumb pie seemed to have fresh blueberries instead of canned filling. And the toffee cookies with cannoli filling was a unique option with a huge portion. Landed on Greg's for coffee and cake (say that 10x fast) As I planned on light fair- I was seduced by a photo I was then interrupted by the conversation to my left A couple discussing their divorce- loudly. I just wanted to quickly run in and run out before the game to grab 2 slices of dessert. And this was at 2 in the afternoon before the 'rush!' Of course RAVE reviews over their dessert. Gregg's is a reliable place to eat for homestyle food. They have a large menu and if you find something you like (you will) it will be the same every time you order it. They have specials for each day of the week that are popular because it's a full meal that includes some of their unbelievable desserts. I am a fan of chicken parm night followed up with the eclair the size of my face. I always have to take it home because I am so full. I've been wanting to come back here for a year now, glad I finally made it. I had their bacon cheeseburger with fries and my friend had one of their wraps with onion rings. I forgot to take pictures because, well, we devoured our food once it was placed in front of us. My burger was cooked to perfection and the bacon, nice and crispy as requested. I also forgot to ask my friend how her food was but she finished the entire thing so we'll say she enjoyed it. Our waitress was on point. We never had to look for her because she checked on us regularly. She was friendly and answered all our questions regarding the menu. We did order dessert to go. She informed us that ordering certain desserts allowed us to have our drinks free and the dessert would cost $3 instead of their usual prices. I like that plan. I have come here many times and never had a problem. This trip, however, has ruined the restaurant for me. If you have waitress Carol serving you, it may be best for you to go ahead and leave. Things started out great. She was a little rough/Rude when taking our orders, but I wasn't going to hold it against her. Some people are just like that, you know? She brought out the rolls but not Gregg's Famous Pickles, so we politely ask for some. She brings a messly put together bowl and slams it on the table. Great. My partner got the unlimited Shirley Temples. When his glass was empty he waited for a few minutes for her to notice. She didn't. So he politely asked for another. She made his second, in the same glass!! This is a health code violation. To make multiple drinks in the same glass increases the likelyhood of spreading dangerous diseases like Norovirus. I immediately brought this up with her manager. He speaks to her and she immediately changes her tune. Makes the drink in a new glass, all polite and smiles and trying to chat with us. Icing on the cake, as pictured, I found steel wool in my salad. Won't be coming back to this location. read more

Well I guess Gregg's is a RI staple, but if I'm going with RI staples, I'd prefer Chelos. The food here is just OK, but I didn't order anything very creative either. In their big 'ol menu I settled on chicken tenders with fries. They were your average chicken tenders, nothing to write home about. My guest got the turkey dinner sub, which has the turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing. He liked it. What was terrible, was their spinach and artichoke dip. I posted a picture on yelp. It was like they dumped a can of creamed spinach in the oven and covered it with cheddar cheese. Awful, just awful. I wouldn't go back. read more
