Everyone on the phone was nice and accommodating as we asked for gluten free and vegan options from the menu but unfortunately our order was wrong and not of good quality at all. We were given lettuce instead of actual bread for buns without being asked and all of our food was soggy even though we were extremely prompt to pick it up. Worst of all the "parmesan truffle fries" were literally fat fries covered in truffle oil and not skinny or even sprinkled on Parmesan like we asked them to. The covered patio in the front is a great spot for people watching and hanging with your pooch. The burgers and shakes are usually great and generous in size. This is the place my picky-eater would always choose if given the chance, Service is spotty and the wait can be long even when the place looks half empty. I feel management needs to step it up a bit. There doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency with staff turning over tables and cleaning up. Spills and crumbs are left to linger a bit too long on tables and floors. read more

Came in town today and stopped by for the first time. Restaurant wasn't crowded and was very clean. Restrooms were clean as well. Customer Service level was low, napkins were low and was never offered a refill. Asked for additional condiments and was told I "ketchup" on the side of my dish. Wings were huge, a lot of people dislike the "steroid looking" chicken wings. The open front door caused the establishment to be warm and have flies. So we got into Columbia for a college visit, and decided we wanted burgers. We ended up at Grill Marks. My godson recommended it as he goes to school there. It didn't disappoint, burgers were good, I'll kinds of shakes sundaes, and grown-up milkshakes as well. This was my first time eating here so I decided to just go all out with the menu. I had a 3-course meal; the food smelled so good and the pictures that I'd seen on Instagram, just drew me in! For the appetizer I had the Marks Nacho Daddy. If you're into spicy, then this dish is a hit. I'm not a big spicy food person, but even though it was spicy, it was sooooo good. I couldn't stop eating it even though I didn't like how my mouth was on fire lol. For my entree I had the Old MarkDonald. That burger was everything. It was a very thick burger. I don't typically get a burger with a whole bunch of "stuff" on it, but since I was trying something new I figured I'd try it out. The burger came with an egg, a friend egg people! I've never had an egg on a burger before - NEVER! It was soooooooo good. I wasn't disappointed at all. The burger was a nice size and a great deal for the price. It came with fries, which are good too. For dessert I had a FreakShake - Strawberry Cheesecake. Again, I wanted to see if what I saw on Instagram is really what I'd get in person and it was! I absolutely loved it. That slice of full cheesecake they had on top really blew my mind. This restaurant was great. The only con I have is the setup. It is a restaurant that gives off that cook out/working in the garage feel and that's fine, but the inside is also open to the outside. I did have an annoying time with shooing flies away from my food. I also don't care for there carry out boxes. Our last visit was in August 2015, shortly after Grill Marks opened. My first review wasn't the greatest because of the long wait, disorganization, and other things I attributed to the restaurant just being opened and the staff not quite yet trained. So now it's been 1 1/2 years later and we decided to give it a try. Four of us had tickets to the Trustus for a play and decided to go to Grill Marks. I told them that we'd only been once and the burgers were good, fries were great and it was close to the Trustus. The play started at 8:00PM and we arrived at 6:10, so we had almost two hours to eat. It wasn't extremely crowded and we were immediately seated at a table. The waitress came by and took our drink orders, two beers, one water and a chardonnay. It took 10-15 minutes for them to bring our drinks. We ordered a side of fried pickles and the truffle fries with parmesan as a starter. She brought out both the appetizers in about 10 minutes. The pickles were very good. The fries, which we really liked the last time, were almost cold...just barely warm. We told her about it and she took them back and brought out another batch in a short time. These were hot and much better. Since it had taken quite a while just to get the beers and the appetizers we decided to order our entrees as soon as she brought the appetizers. We ordered a basic hamburger $6.95, Au Poivre Hamburger $9.94, Hawaiian Hamburger and another burger. The burgers came out in about 15 minutes or so but they brought out some other type of burger instead of the Hawaiian burger. Apparently the waitress either took the order wrong or they made the wrong burger. She said she'd be back in a second and get the right burger. Meanwhile, we started eating and our friends split the other burger. It now was getting close to 7:30 and she came to the table with the Hawaiian burger. Our friend said to just forget it as we didn't have much time left in order to make the play. She offered to get a doggy bag but since we weren't going home immediately we told her "no thanks". The manager did come out to the table and said "I've heard you had a problem". We told her about our first experience and now almost a similar experience 1 1/2 years later. I must say she was very apologetic and thanked us for giving them another shot. She did comp our friend's burger and one of the appetizers. At least they did show concern. But I'm afraid none of us will be returning for another try. read more

Got there around 1:00 and was told there was a 30 minute wait. No big deal. Was seated around 1:35. Ordered our food around 1:45. Our waitress was very personable which was great. However, when an hour had passed and we hadn't received our food, we were frustrated. We had to go and look for our server to ask how much longer our wait was. When she returned she let us know that there were 4-5 orders in front of ours. Due to it being almost three we left and went somewhere else. I understand that it was a busy weekend downtown- but am confused about why it was taking over an hour to get four burgers/fries out. And why was only one order at a time being done? It seemed as though it was understaffed and rather than limiting the amount of tables they were seating, they were filling every table and making people wait over an hour for food. Do not come here unless you are prepared for really slow service. Every time I come her, I'm dumbfounded by how long it takes to get a drink. It's practically empty with several waitresses just standing around, and you still don't get your drinks. But... they still earn four stars because they have great cocktails. And their boozy milkshakes are to die for. My favorites are the strawberry basil lemonade and the S'mores milkshake. Mark 'n' Stormy is good too. The patio is amazing. We went and got dinner here for a friend's birthday. Nothing was edible. The fried pickles were fried so hard they were crunchy and were more like kettle chips. None of our burgers were cooked to temps we asked for, but they also came out cold. My burger came out with lettuce and tomato even though it wasn't supposed to have that even per the menu. One got skinny fries, one got truffle fries, and I got sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries were supposed to come with queso, the came with some sort of sweet white sauce that tasted like canned orange juice concentrate. The fries were so tough and inedible they had the texture of chewy dog treats. The truffle fries were tossed in really bad/cheap/over poweringly funky truffle oil. The buns were hard. Well that was one of the most unpleasant lunches we've ever had in Columbia. The food was tolerable but the flies in this open air restaurant left us swatting and flailing for the entirety of our meal. Disgusting in the summer. It left me feeling nauseated when we left. I am not sure if it was seeing all those flies on my food or having to eat it within seconds to avoid more flies landing on my food that made me more ill. Also, poorly placed fly killing machine near the restrooms had not been cleaned inna while & smelled rancid. Overall the burgers were mediocre and the service was disappointing. Had an overnight in Columbia a little while back. I hadn't been downtown Columbia in decades and was very impressed by all the renovation, growth etc. Anyhoo, my wife headed off to a relative's wedding and the boys and I were left to our own devices. We happened upon Grillmarks while we were wandering down the main drag. It was a clean, well lit, warm looking place. Being pretty late on a Saturday night, there were only a few other tables in the dining room. Our server was prompt but perfunctory. That's my only complaint about our visit here. The young lady did her job but did not engage or make any real attempt to be hospitable. I get it. It's almost close and you are trying to get out/get the restaurant closed but you should never let the guest "feel" that. Enough about that. Our food arrived in a timely fashion and it was hot. Visually, all of the items were very appealing! My boys stuck to the classics and shared a grilled cheese sandwich and chicken fingers. There were heartily pleased with their orders. I had the bison burger with a side of onion rings. Maaaan, let me tell you. That was the best burger I have had in a long time. I didn't get it with too many bells and whistles as I like to taste my burger and this paid off! It was hot, juicy and delicious. Worth the price and worth the walk. Also, the onion rings were also exceptional. Bravo to the kitchen for that. I love onion rings and they are often the most disappointing part of a meal. I've got a soft spot for restaurants inside of re-purposed historical buildings so I was delighted to discover Grill Marks which is inside of an old warehouse that was built in the late 1800's. Old photos on the wall pay homage to the building's history which I thought was a nice tough. The front patio is a great place to enjoy the fresh air and downtown vibe of Columbia and dogs are welcome as well. Inside a bar and plenty of tables to enjoy your meal. The menu was a tiny bit confusing for first timers (especially when kids keeps ripping your focus from deciphering exactly how and what to order. ) As an appetizer we ordered the White Truffle fries served with Dijonnaise (which was DELICIOUS!) Once we were ordering our meals, we realized that we could have just gotten it as a side with our meal. Whoops! I ordered the French Connection burger and my husband ordered the Firehouse Burger. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. I loved the whole roasted garlic cloves on my burger. Everything was hot and fresh. For sides we got, Sweet Potato Fries served with some sort of cinnamon sauce and Fried Pickles with Ranch. I was unimpressed with the pickles, but I'm picky about my pickles personally. ‍ Kids meals were awesome! Served on frisbee plates, generous sizes. Finally had a chance to check out Grill Marks in the Vista and I'm a fan! My friend and I arrived around 6pm on a Thursday and were seated immediately. Our server greeted us quickly and was attentive throughout the meal. (Someone that I guess was management stopped by the table at one point to see how we were doing too.) I knew I wanted to try out a burger and was considering adding the pimento cheese to it but all pimento cheese is different so I wasn't sure. I asked if I could have a sample of it and the waitress said sure and brought it over within a couple of minutes. The pimento cheese isn't spicy and was very creamy so I decided to go for it. My friend ordered the 4 cheese burger and we decided to share the "Three Way" appetizer (getting a little scandalous there, Grill Marks!) and chose the white truffle parm fries, sweet potato fries, and fried green tomatoes. We received the appetizer first (we asked for it first) and started to chow down. The parm fries were our favorite. They come with a mayo garlic dipping sauce. The fries are great on their own and you don't even need the sauce but I kept using it anyway. I love to dip! The fried green tomatoes were a close second for me. They had a good coating to tomato ratio, were crunchy on the outside and piping hot! The sweet potato fries come with an orange cinnamon dipping sauce and the sauce is the star of that show. I got a "Perfectly Dressed" burger (no onion) and added pimento cheese. I asked for the burger to be medium well and it came out well done but was still juicy. It was a good burger but I felt like all the flavor came from the pimento cheese and the pickles. There wasn't a lot of flavor from the actual burger patty. I ate a little piece of it by itself to check. I'm definitely interested in coming back to try some different burgers... I'm looking at you Low Country Burger. This place is a bit pricey. The burgers do not come with a side of anything so be prepared to order an "appetizer" if you want something to go with it. I paid over $16 for a burger, 1/2 the three way and I only got a water. I went in when there was only 1 other person at the bar (so they weren't busy at all) and encountered a less than friendly bartender. Ordered food to go and they got my order completely wrong. Was missing fries, and got the wrong sandwich. I was staying at the hotel a few doors down and called to see if they could run me the right food, but the hostess scoffed on the phone saying they don't do delivery. (Let's maybe think outside of the box - it would take less than 2 minutes for a manager to walk next door and make it right.) I should have checked my bag, so lesson learned. The place just kind of looked nice enough that I expected I wouldn't have to. Also, I ordered the fried green tomatoes as a side and they were flavorless and soggy. Two stars since the sandwich I did receive was decent and the manager refunded my card for the fries.
