Oke Poke hits the spot every time! This location is nicely located in a lil plaza with lots of other eateries and a Vons store! We checked it out for lunch on a Friday and it was a little busy but the staff worked really fast. This was my first time at the Monrovia location and I really liked it! The seafood is consistently fairly fresh and they have a great selection of toppings! They're also fairly generous with their scoops so I think the price is fair for a bowl. I love the dynamite sauce! It's just spicy enough and really puts the bowl together! The parking situation is ok - there's a large lot but the plaza is popular so while there's a lot of spots, it's a pretty full lot. Great poke and I'd totally recommend! Poke tends to be more expensive than other food options around the area but this Poke restaurant does a fantastic job maintaining a generously low price for the food while also balancing the quality and quantity aspects of the food. What I think this restaurant does a fantastic job of doing is that they are aware that not everyone wants a humongous bowl of Poke every single day so they had the brilliant idea of suppling a Small Bowl option for their customers. I've been to many Poke places and I haven't once seen another restaurant give the option of a small bowl. The food is also pretty delicious and very much worth the price. This poke is more than A-OKE in my book. It really did go above our expectations. In my opinion, they have a larger than normal selection for the different types of fish and sides. They even have kid sizes available for the ones with smaller appetites as well as poke burritos (a personal favorite of mine). I had decided to go for the salmon with white rice and all the fixins possible to the point of barely being able to close the actual bowl. I told the server to surprise me with the sauce, as long as it had a reasonable amount of heat to it. I'm a big proponent of spicy food, and personally really enjoyed the fact their sauces had a variety of spicy versions. On top of the great food, the customer service was great. I never really like how they expect you to provide mix-ins even before picking your protein, it just seems backwards. The employee didn't understand the concept of having sides (seaweed salad, crab meat) on top of the protein, like how almost every single poke place does it. She kept going back and forth and it was a confusing experience. They also gave me like 3 pieces of corn, I knew inflation was bad, but I didn't think it was THIS bad. Are you really skimping on the corn out of all things? I find it a bit expensive for the size and I didn't feel very full afterward. 3 scoops for $9.50 ($10.40 including tax) 5 scoops for $11.50 1 scoop kids bowl is $4.99 veggie bowl is $7.99. +avocado as a topping is free (if you're into that) I found their sauces a bit confusing and had to ask for elaboration on most of them. Their okeyaki sauce is like a spicy teriyaki sauce. Their 'oke' sauce is soy sauce + ponzu. I'm not a fan of places where it gets confusing just to order sauces. WARNING: DO NOT order the spicy mayo sauce if you cannot handle spicy. I can't handle spicy food, but normally a light spicy aioli is okay, which I was expecting the spicy mayo to be. IT WAS NOT. My mouth was on fire and I couldn't enjoy the poke as much as I wanted to. Sincere regrets. However, unlike a lot of other poke places, they have dessert here! They have Hawaiian shaved ice, ice cream sandwiches, and Dole pineapple soft serve (Dole whip?). The girl who helped my friends out... not so much. We all did the build your own bowls. It's nothing special when compared to most other poke places. most of the ingredients are the same. They're a little light handed with the sauce and don't mix it in very well. I like how they do it at Pokelicious in TC. eh. My friends asked repeatedly for half salad / half rice but she just made their bowls however she wanted... They gave up halfway through and thus, their bowls looked pretty empty. I felt pretty bad. There's no way they got full off that meal. She left out ingredients or murmured something about she wasn't allowed to do that... As I don't live in the area, I don't see why I'd come back. Poke spots are a dime a dozen these days. They're now starting to flow into The City of Monrovia with 3 options to choose from: Oke Poke, Fins or Tails Poke Bar and Sharkie Poke. Based on appearance and quantity, decided on Oke Poke. Apparently, they have a slew of other locations all over the OC and IE. Build Your Own -- They have a handful of signature bowls but I like building my own. While they are entirely way too generous in terms of quantity, the quality was merely acceptable. The pile of albacore looked old, dry and not appetizing at all. I went against my better judgement and ordered it anyway. Their habanero masago was a unique item as I have never seen that served anywhere else. It has a bit of a kick, opposite of the sweet orange masago. I understand that poke is meant for the bottom shelf fish but the options they had there looked somewhat sketchy. Not sure how long it had been sitting out there or how long it had been sitting in the fridge but everything looked old. I guess they make up for it with quantity. Service was great. It was obviously our first time there so the staff was pretty patient as we worked our way down the line. It's conveniently located in the Pavillions plaza next to the little massage spa. Yes, poke place are popping up everywhere, and not just recently ... for the past couple of years. Bon Appetit magazine even did an article on the island cuisine invading the mainland, but surprise to all of those who give these poke places a 5 star ... it's NOT authentic! The ones you see littered all over California have the flavors catered to the western palate, not true to how Hawaiians have it. On that note .... we came here for lunch to support a local business (cuz we're cool like that!) After trying several places in SoCal, they all begin to look the same. Here, you choose 3 or 5 scoops of fish. Don't get excited, they're small melon ball scoops, not the ones Baskin Robbins use. Then you can tack on toppings, like edamame, onions, sesame .... or even cream cheese for an extra buck (that sure screams authentic!) We ordered two 5 scoops bowls. For the fish, we picked ahi, yellowtail and salmon. We avoided the scallops; they're just too bland and the spicy tuna is grounded up, which always makes me think they use the leftover veiny parts so you can't tell. We also added some edamame, sesame, avacado, and sesame oil, oke sauce and a dash of miso dressing. Both bowls were good and filling, but not heavy and didn't weigh us down. But I can't figure out why this would ever be a 5. It's good, but nothing like the many different kinds of marinated fish served with steamy white rice found on the islands. The young lady that served was was nice, but I couldn't hear half the things she said. After asking about their sauces, I just blindly picked what I thought would work. Another thing that took away from the experience was they blasted reggae. How is that related to Hawaii? Note to manager: Jamaica and Hawaii are 2 different places and they're quite far apart, just sayin'. Overall, we did enjoy our lunch. I really enjoyed Oke Poke! My bf & I had previously only tried Oke Poke's catering and hadn't had the chance to come in to try for ourselves. Restaurant space is small and clean. Service is good. It wasn't too busy when my bf & I came to dine on Saturday night so we got to spend some time thoroughly looking at their menu options. Oke Poke allows for 3 scoops and 5 scoops of fish ($8.95/$10.95, respectively). We both ordered from Oke Poke's specialty bowls. Keep in mind, their premade specialty marinades are only for Salmon and Tuna. However, the girl who was prepping our bowls told us we could choose fish from outside and she could have the specialty sauce on them as well. My bf got the Crunchy Garlic (5 scoops) with tuna & salmon, and one scoop of Albacore, with a base of half white rice & salad. I got the Bailey (3 scoops) with tuna & salmon and one scoop of Shrimp, with a base of salad. Both of these flavors were really good, and we added almost all of the add-ons they offered & top-offs. I made a visit to Oke Poke today and it was delicious! Poke is one of my favorite foods and I can definitely conclude that I had an amazing bowl here at Oke. I decided to go with the 3 scoops, and thankfully I did, because the scoops were very generous. Another good thing I have to mention is that the avocado topping is free of charge, unlike other restaurants. The scoops were very generous, and even though it doesn't seem like much, it really filled me up. Not only that, but the prices are definitely beyond reasonable, I mean it was $10.25 for 3 scoops of fish and a good chunk of avocado. I definitely recommend this place to Poke lovers as it's an amazing place. I chose 2 scoops of salmon and 1 scoop of spicy tuna as my protein choice; no regrets about that at all. The fish was fresh and I got to say, their spicy tuna was over the top. I mean, I've never tasted spicy tuna that fresh before, especially in any of my Poke bowls that I've had before. This new poke spot just opened up in Monrovia so my work BFF and I had to check it out. For 3 scoops, it was $9.95 and enough to fill your tummy for lunch. I got the Albacore, Spicy Tuna and Octopus. I liked everything and the fish was very flavorful when it came to mixing my own sauces. I got their house sauce, sesame oil and a bit of the miso. At the end, one of the staff offered me a sample of their house hot sauce and it reminded me of Lahtt Sauce and the chili oil sauces you get at Chinese establishments minus the chili oil. It was addictive, pretty hot and my friend and I shared half of the sample and spread it all over our poke bowls. Topping selection is pretty solid-- I liked that they had habanero masago and that unlike some other poke places, didn't charge you $1 for avocado. I hate when they do that. Seating was limited here and mostly comprised of 4-person tables. So you'd get this awkward one person sitting at a 4-person table and you're basically vulturing for a seat in the A/C... I hate to leave a poor review for a small business, especially since it's been hard due to Covid, but my experience today was awful and I probably won't be going here anymore. Oke Poke used to be my favorite poke place with spotty customer service. It was never horrible, just mostly unprofessional, until today. My friend and I showed up around 1:30pm today to pick up food, only to be told they were closed for half an hour for food prep. That was fine with us. We returned at around 2pm and the sole employee in the front was assisting a customer and then after helped us. What ensued was incredibly embarrassing and pathetic for any business, in terms of customer service. We watched as the employee slowly and carelessly slam the rice and spring mix salad into the bowls we ordered. He even spilled some rice onto the lid exterior of my friend's bowl and left it there the entire time. I did not realize this until later when I picked up my friend's bowl to give to her, and a clump of old rice was stuck to my hand. For the spring mix salad, we each got an amazing amount of 4-5 sprigs. As we moved onto the toppings, it was evident that the employee did not care at all and hated working there. He worked incredibly slowly to throw just a few slices of cucumber one at a time into our bowls. He continuously looked out at the front window to see what was happening in the parking lot instead of paying attention to what we said, forcing us to repeat ourselves multiple times as we slooooowly worked through the toppings section. In fact, we moved so slowly that his coworker who appeared from the back helped the customer after us and quickly caught up to where we were in the line and had to wait for us to be done. The other employee working was very nice to the other customer, asking if the customer wanted the toppings mixed in or plated individually, while the employee helping us just chucked our items into the bowl. As we finally wrapped things up, the icing on the cake was when the careless employee quickly turned surprisingly upbeat and energetic as he joined in on the conversation with his coworker and the other customer. He was so enthused and engaged in this conversation, that he forgot what dry toppings my friend wanted right after he had asked her. As she repeated herself for the second time, he now couldn't hear her because they all started laughing raucously with the other customer over their shared conversation, so my friend had to repeat herself a third time. Finally checkout time came and I wanted to pay with my card. I don't understand why with Covid, Oke Poke is still having their employees touch the customer's card. It's a hygiene problem and kind of gross. The careless employee took 3 swipes before he could get my payment to go through. The fish was fresh, but they definitely skimped on the portions as compared to how they used to operate. Unfortunately, this is where my patronage with Oke Poke ends. Order Setup (See Wall Menu picture for more details): 1. Choose Your Size: $9.50 Bowl (or Burrito style, if preferred) 2. Base: Brown Rice - fluffy, tender and quite filling. 3. Add-Ons: Avocado (Free!!!). I also added on imitation crab, cucumbers, edamame, masago, and seaweed. 4. Proteins: I went with 3 Scoops of Protein (Salmon, Ahi Tuna and Albacore). I would have considered yellow tail, but it didn't look too fresh nor appealing. 5. Sauce: Oke Sesame (Creamier). If you get the regular Sesame Sauce, it's the oil version. 6. Toppings: Fried garlic and furikake. Drink: Just got a cup of iced water. The meal itself was tasty, wholesome and quite filling. The Oke Sesame sauce was creamy and light, not too much sodium, yay! Good size portion for my first time here. My meal also came with miso soup. The broth itself was light and good. However, I was bummed to see that my miso soup didn't have any seaweed or cubed tofu bits like my two friends' miso soups (then again, the service I got from the male employee was mediocre). I ended up skipping the ice cream sandwich because I was already full. However, Tora and Jan both got their (Green Tea and Vanilla Bean) ice cream sandwiches and they liked it. Service: The guy helping me looked miserable and annoyed, especially, when I asked him what the differences was between the Sesame and Oke Sesame sauces. Even when he ranged up my transaction, he still looked like he had a stick up his bum. I had to remind him about my miso soup, even though I had shown him my Yelp Check-in right before he rang me up.
