My experience with the location, staff and inside the spot itself was great. Very nice and friendly. Lots of people. They close at 3pm. I forgot when I showed up earlier in the wee at 315 :(. But I went back to try. I ordered the combination plate with two catfish, two wings, grits and eggs and a waffle. Went there on 3/19/26 during my vist from Queens NY and there was a 45min-1hr wait for a table indoors, however the waitress suggested to order to-go plates and utilize one of the four tables outside, Which we did. I ordered the catfish/chicken and grits combo with a sweet tea. This came with toast, a waffle and eggs of your choice. This was possibly the BEST catfish I've had seasoned and fried to perfection not greasy nor fishy just delightful. The waffle was fluffy and paired well with both the fried chicken and catfish. I even left my bag behind and had to return later--everything was still intact, which I really appreciated. It's a small, quaint place, and given that it was a holiday weekend, I assume the longer wait times were due to the high volume of guests. I went to Gritz Cafe on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant is nestled in an affluent area of the historic Westside of Las Vegas. There is parking on both sides of the street. I went inside, and the hostess took my number and said I would receive a text once a table opened. I returned to my car until I received a text stating my table was ready and I had 8 minutes to arrive. The inside of the restaurant had Afrocentric paintings on the wall and classic R&B, like " Nobody" by Keith Sweat, featuring Athena Cage playing. An attentive, pleasant, and no-nonsense server named Angel took my order. I wanted a waffle, so I asked Angel, " What's popular?" She said the classic waffles are popular but recommended the sweet potato waffles as the most popular--an excellent call! I ordered the sweet potato waffles, cheese eggs, four catfish fillets, grits, peach cobbler, and sweet tea! It took a while to get my order, and I saw a family who sat after me get served before me. However, I had time to spare, so I waited patiently to receive my food. My server Angel approached my table and asked, " Did you eat?" I was in thd middle of slurping my sweet tea and said, " Ummm mmmm." Angel frowned up and snapped, " Ummm mmmm" making a face that showed she felt my wait was unacceptable; she seemed to take my wait personally and immediately walked to the back to I presume tell the cook to put some pep in their step because I have a customer who's been waiting too long. It was a funny moment but I appreciated Angel ensuring that I got taken care of promptly; it shows that she values her customers! When I got my food it was worth the wait, especially the sweet potato waffle! The waffle was soft and golden, and it contained chunks of sweet potato inside! It tasted so delicious that I can't return to eating regular waffles again! I enjoyed all of my food, including the scrumptious peach cobbler, and the hostess gave me several refills of sweet tea! When I got a to-go plate for my catfish and peach cobbler; the friendly hostess brought me a box and a small Styrofoam cup full of sweet tea to take! Another friendly female employee or possibly the owner bid me farewell as I exited the door! The food was mouthwatering, and Gritz Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants! We tried the fried chicken wings, catfish, fried shrimp, grits, yams, collard greens, hot link, and cornbread. The food came out quickly. Everything was delicious. Not everywhere can make grits, but these were spot on. My favorites were the fried chicken, yams, and grits. I was too full for dessert, but check it out for yourself. After reading all the glowing reviews online, my family and I were excited to finally try this place. We decided to go on Good Friday, figuring it would be as good a day as any. Unfortunately, that turned out not to be the case. When we arrived, we were told there would be about a one-hour wait. Given all the rave reviews, we assumed the food would be worth it. After an hour passed, we checked in with the hostess and were told there were still four parties ahead of us. This didn't match what their waitlist website showed, but we figured maybe they were just really busy. Another 30 minutes passed, and the wait started to feel excessive. People who had been waiting in line with us, were seated, finished eating, and leaving -- some even joking, "Y'all are STILL in line?!" It almost became funny, but in hindsight, it should've been a warning sign. At one point, I asked a group of gentlemen coming out how the food was, and they told me, "Go to Lolo's -- this isn't it." I brushed it off as different strokes for different folks and kept the faith. Eventually, I checked with the hostess again. She said, "Oh, I was just about to come get you," but I had to interrupt her conversation with a coworker where they were laughing and joking to get an answer. That didn't leave the best impression, but at that point, we were committed. Once seated, we waited another 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order. For a restaurant that isn't particularly large, that felt excessive. When our waitress finally arrived, she was cordial and apologized for the wait, which we appreciated. There were four of us dining. Two ordered chicken and waffles, one ordered the grits plate, and one ordered the Louisiana plate (hotlink, eggs, side) plus a waffle. When our drinks arrived, one of the cups had food stuck to the rim -- which was pretty off-putting. Seriously... When our food came out, everything looked fine at first. We said grace and got ready to eat... only to realize we had no silverware. We asked our server, who said, "Yeah, hold on," then proceeded to serve several other tables before returning. Once we finally started eating, we realized we also had no napkins. After flagging down another server, we waited another five minutes before those arrived. The table next to us -- some friendly ladies from Oakland who had also been waiting outside in line behind us -- asked what we thought. Their response summed it up well: "The food is okay, but the service is terrible." Now, onto the food itself: The waffles were soft and soggy, not crisp at all. They tasted like they may have been frozen and reheated rather than made fresh. The chicken was... just chicken. It was lightly seasoned and lacked the flavor you'd typically expect from a soul food restaurant. Nothing memorable. That wasn't soul food chicken, that was soul-less chicken. The grits were probably the biggest disappointment. When a restaurant highlights a particular dish -- especially one referenced in its name -- you expect that item to shine. The grits were creamy, but completely bland. No seasoning, no flavor, nothing that made them stand out. They tasted like basic grits you could easily make at home. I kept expecting some savory flavor or seasoning, but it just wasn't there. If I went to a place called the Banana Pudding Palace, I'd expect the best Banana Pudding ever, same with Gritz Cafe. Highly disappointed. When the waitress returned and saw that much of the food was still on our plates, she asked if we wanted dessert. We declined. She asked if we wanted to-go boxes. We declined again. Anything else to drink? No -- just the check. After waiting an hour and a half to be seated, another 15 minutes to order, receiving dirty cups, and repeatedly having to ask for basic items like silverware and napkins -- all for food that was simply average -- I can confidently say this is not the best soul food spot in Vegas. Maybe they were having an off day. But if that's the case, it was a really off day. In hindsight, I probably should have listened to the guys who told me to go to somewhere else -- because this place didn't live up to the hype. read more
