Gritz Cafe is a local Las Vegas treasure. This Historic Westside restaurant is lauded for its Deep South, soul food cuisine and pays homage to the region with meat 'n' three plates for each Deep South state and a variety of other Southern-inspired menu items. As a Mississippi native, I fully approve, and here are some quick diamonds (pros) and coal (cons) from my visit this past Sunday. DIAMONDS: - My entire meal of fried catfish, sweet potato waffle, and grits. This was definitely some of the best soul food I've had from a restaurant out West! The sweet potato waffle is what initially lured me in (as a sweet potato lover), and it was packed with flavor & quite scrumptious. I also ordered their sweet potato cheesecake to go, but I haven't tried it yet... Nom, Nom. - The warm, colorful, and inviting space that was full of art and soul. - The customer service... While there was an initial wait to place my order, the service was on point afterward. - I also enjoyed learning more about the restaurant owner from the LVRJ article and Nevada State Proclamation posted in the restaurant. She's quite a trailblazer. See the attached pictures for more details. COAL: - Unfortunately, I did have to wait 1 hour and 40 minutes to get a table for my solo, self-care breakfast. I did anticipate this, so I brought along a book that's easy reading to keep me occupied while I waited in my car. In total, I probably spent 2.5-3 hours at this location. So, my "self-care breakfast" turned out to be more of a rushed brunch since I had a lot of errands to run. Moral of the story: It would be great if this restaurant expanded and offered additional seating. :) read more

What a blessing Gritz Cafe is. They do something that a lot of other venues have problems with.. They are consistent. Food is consistently good. Dependable, delicious food and reasonable prices. We came in this morning all the way from Henderson and had a great breakfast. But todays meal came with a very pleasant surprise. We were met with the most beautiful, smiling and welcoming face of Olivia. She was just amazing. Very efficient and thorough, but she was very sweet and hospitable. The "Mississippi", three well seasoned, cornmeal crusted, fluffy and moist deep fried catfish filets, a bowl of buttery grits, well cooked collards and a to die for 12" thin and crisp waffle all for a little more than a quarter cheques? Don't like my choices? How about juicy fried chicken wings (stolen from a poker bud's plate), grilled pork chops, sausage patties and choose from a plethora of choices of sides, biscuits and breads. Everything is also available ala carte so mix and match anyway you like. Omelets and sandwiches including the requisite po boys available. None sampled. Holy CATFISH! Incredible! We had the "Holy Trinity" & every item was incredibly yummy! The greens are the best in town! We used to go to Hushpuppy - the catfish is far better!!!!! Time for brunch at the Gritz Cafe on a Saturday morning. There's a wait, so be sure to get your name on the list and take a seat inside, outside, or in your car as they'll text your when your table is ready. Arkansas - Crispy Golden Chicken Fried Steak $18 Served with country gravy, two sides (we chose gritz and two eggs your way) and one bread (we chose cornbread). The steak was super crunchy but a bit on the smaller size. The Husband's gritz were a bit runny, which isn't how he likes them. He later saw mine, which was thick and not watery and preferred the one I got. Louisina - Juicy Beef Hotlink $18 Served with two sides (I chose two eggs your way and gritz) and one bread (I chose cornbread). I had ordered two hot links and only one arrived. Had to let our waitress know and the other link arrived later on. BLT with Fries (or Gritz) $12 The bread was just basic white bread and was a bit burned, but edible. The Little Guy ate it all except the fries. There is a 4% transaction fee when paying with a credit/debit card. When we paid the bill, we gave the waitress cash. My change didn't look right, and I realized she charged me the credit card price. So, I had to let her know the error and she ran into some issues giving me my change as each waitress is responsible for their own cash. This makes it a bit tricky as the waitress rounds down when giving you your cash change back, and not coins but in dollar bills. Overall, the food was decent. The husband is a big fan of country fried steaks and has had his share. Although it was good, he was disappointed in the size of it. My hot links were hot links, and fine. We noticed others waiting a long time to be seated, so we lucked out at the time we arrived so our wait was minimal. read more

Had a lunch meeting here with coworkers from Vegas. There was a 30 minute wait outside. I couldn't see inside, no windows. When we entered the restaurant was small, seating for about 30 with inviting sunlight yellow paint. The waitstaff was very helpful explaining the food options. Everything on the menu looked delicious. After about 15 minutes going back and forth I decided on the Basket which included waffles, wings, fish with eggs made how you like and a side, I chose grits. The food was so good, I forgot to take a photo for this post. Some of the best I've eaten in Vegas. We met the Owner, she came out to greet us. Such an awesome experience all around. read more

If you're in a hurry, don't go because there is a long wait to get a table. To their credit, they have their system down pat --- you get a text letting you know how long a wait, how many ahead of you, and then when you are off the wait list because your table is ready. The food is authentically southern. Would love it if they had hush puppies as a side dish, but that item is missing from the menu. We ordered catfish two ways --- fried (in corn meal) and grilled. The fried catfish is tasty, not overly seasoned and not salty. Just really good eating. The grilled one was left in the grill too long and became dry. On the other hand, the waffle was underdone. Sweet potato fries were some of the best we've had -- very crispy. Yams were quite tasty but a tad too sweet. Collard greens were good, but a bit on the bitter side. I remember that in the deep south, we used to add a little sugar and a lot of bacon or ham to temper that bitter taste. Our server was exceptionally happy, singing along to the music that was blaring (yes, blaring!) from the overhead TVs. All in all, a good enough experience to once again indulge in southern cooking. However, there are other places to get good seafood that won't require a long wait to get in or get served. read more

Everything we ordered was better than our expectations from the butter pecan waffles and crispy chicken wings, shrimp and grits, and the most flavorful collard greens ever. If you heard about the place from the Netflix series " Somebody Feed Phil" like we did, Gritz Cafe more than lived up to the hype. Great atmosphere and friendly staff too! My friend wanted a soul food fix and I saw a news story about this place (channel 8!) and at 6am on tv it looked amazing and it 100% lived up to the hype! The fried chicken was crispy and juicy, the Mac and cheese was like a comforting hug. And the biscuit! My friend thought I was crazy boy putting butter or jam on it, but it didn't need it! Gritz Cafe is my favorite! I might have to drive 2.5 hours to get it again, but it is a favorite. Located in what I can only describe as an industrial and business side of Las Vegas, this small gem has an ample amount of parking in its parking lot and in the streets. You know it is good when people are waiting to dine-in and to take out. Upon arriving, you will be asked for information to put you on the waiting list. We were informed 45 minutes, and we decided to sit in the pretty patio area. We were willing to wait, but I received a txt message earlier than told, and we were shortly seated. We were seated (by the way, such great customer service) and were offered a choice of silverware or plastic. We said we would take whatever was easier for her, and she thanked us and gave us plasticeware. For drinks, we ordered the sweet tea. I enjoyed the tea, but my friend thought it was too sweet and claimed the sugar sunk to the bottom. I disagree. It was mixed well. When our waitress arrived, she asked if we were ready because we looked ready. We laughed because it was true. We were ready. Let's talk food. First, my Big Gritz Breakfast. Found under the Gritz Favorite section of the menu. It was a plate served with a waffle, gritz, eggs (made in your choice, I chose scrambled), and an option of a chicken wing or catfish. Catfish it is! I haven't eaten catfish in a long time, and this generous serving of 3 (or was it four?) pieces was delicious, flaky, and oh so good! So good! Top it with some of their hot sauce, and it is perfect. I usually top my breakfast with Chulula, but this sauce right here was fantastic! It was not oily at all, just the right amount of flakiness, texture, and flavor. Next on my plate was the waffle, eggs, and gritz. The waffle was a thin batter and fluffy, but personally, I prefer a bit of crunch on the edges. Nonetheless, a very tasty waffle topped with syrup. The eggs were perfectly buttered. The gritz did not need anything more than for me to eat it. We tried gritz at other places, but were so happy with what we got here. The waitress placed a handful of prepackaged single-serving butter, but I didn't think any of my dishes needed it. My friend ordered the Biscuits and Gravy. It was served in a way I never saw, where it was topped with the sausage rather than mixed in with it. It was a bit too much of a flour flavor for me, but my friend did not mind it too much and appreciated the generous amount of pepper in his gravy. The saltiness from the sausage helped balance it all out. The biscuits were perfectly fluffy, smaller than what I am used to, but still something he pleasantly enjoyed. He definitely enjoyed the gritz, no different from mine, but he was disappointed when he ordered grits from another restaurant, so Gritz Cafe served up the cup of gritz that he wanted. He got his plate with sunny side up eggs. The cafe is small, but very busy and it is a good busy. Oh, and that playlist of 90s R&B and the matching music videos on the TV screen brought a bit more love into the meal. Great for families, couples, or a meal to treat yourself. Call ahead if you are a party of 3 or more. That way, they can reserve your seating and plan accordingly. read more

My LA friends will hate me for this , I really enjoyed this place a lot better . The food was so good and the customer service was amazing . Erin was our waitress and she was so nice and welcoming to my family . She was attentive and kind. She had a great smile as well. All of the workers were kind though. The fried chicken and waffles here are wow. Usually I don't get gritz but it was in the name of this cafe so we tried it and it was one of the best gritz I've had . Definitely a southern spot located off the strip that was a little busy when I arrived. Inside location seems a tad bit small, but it did not stop the buzz. It was a 1-2 hour wait and for me traveling alone and with other obligations I opted for the to go option instead over the experience. The hostess who provided me with a secondary option as well as the waitress who took my order offered great service. What I ordered? The menu had some delicious sounding options that it was hard for me to choose. I settled on fried fish that came with two sides. It was a simple decision, grits please and some scrambled eggs. The fish .. I don't know who was back there cooking it. I could slap them for how good it tasted. Though I got it to go I stopped to take a taste test before I headed home. The grits I got covered with cheese bacon . They were okay. A little more creamier and we would be in there for sure. The eggs weren't any razzle dazzle, but overall it was great breakfast. My wife and I shared the grits and the sweet potato waffle which were outstanding! My wife also had a biscuit and their chicken wings which were terrific! I had a veggie omelet and toast which was very tasty. The staff was very friendly making us and everyone around us feel very welcomed. All in all a great home style experience! Good breakfast spot. Grits were creamy, they were even good later in the day without warming up. Catfish was real catfish and seasoned to perfection, just a pinch of hot sauce to elevate the taste; perfect. Shrimp and grits were good as well, lost a fraction of points for not having green onions and brown sugar for the coffee. We would have liked the waffle to have a crunchy texture, but that is just our preference. The staff were pleasant and attentive as well. I'm kicking myself 2 days later because I ate all my greens yesterday and I'm trying to teaspoon the Mac n cheese n yams to last one more day with one wing per day. This was our first time and oh what a treat. To spite the 50 minute wait it was well worth it. The staff were friendly and professional. To actually see the owner Ms Trina Giles pitch in and assist her staff even as much to wiped down tables to help customers get seated promptly.
