There's no better catfish and hush puppies anywhere in Vegas than at The Hush Puppy. The food is fresh and delicious. Their portion sizes are on the larger size as well. I came because my grandmother loved this place decades ago, so I was excited to try a longtime Vegas staple. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the nostalgia. The first disappointment was the signage. Multiple signs advertise "All You Can Eat Catfish," but we were told it's limited to three pieces. That's misleading. We also planned to order drinks from the menu, only to find out the bar is under construction and they aren't serving them. The lobby smelled damp and musty. The fries were limp and tasted like cafeteria food. The catfish was heavily breaded with an incredibly thin piece of fish inside... more breading than catfish. Food and service were a level below mediocre. I ordered the catfish and shrimp. The catfish was hard and stale, and not seasoned (I'm black and from Oakland). The shrimp wasn't seasoned but had an excellent batter texture. No seasons just made it edible. Their take on hush puppies was oh-Kay, but a seasoned hush puppy would have saved some semblance of 'namesake value'. It disappointed but was the better food experience. The chicken tenders were also ordered and were shriveled and, of course, unseasoned. We also ordered three pieces of sweet potato pie. All three pieces were differently sized, with one being appropriate for a serving and the other two didn't sum up to the first piece. My daughter loves Mac n cheese and so I ordered one side of it. My daughter eats microwaveable Kraft Mac n cheese. She says the Hush Puppy Mac n Cheese tasted like a horrible pizza, and she eats school pizza with no issue. I've never witnessed her throw away Mac n cheese until now. The collard greens. if you have to eat it, it's edible. But it's mediocre, if that. The service. While I waited there was a discussion going on between the cashier and the person in line in front of me. It had nothing to do with the order. Just idle conversation. The customer is the one that stopped the conversation to "let me order" so the cashier/hostess/conversationalist took my order. She needed help from another employee, Eastern European-ish tone to her voice. She didn't seem to be thrilled to be alive, much less, at work. So they finished taking my order together. I had been a long time patron of Hush Puppies for more than 30 years. I remember when people came by the bus loads to enjoy the great food! Unfortunately I was disappointed the last time I was here and hadn't been back for quite some time. However I decided today I would go and give it another chance. Today was my last visit!!! Absolutely nothing taste like it originally did basically it was flavorless! Also I have eaten catfish all my life and I'm 75. I don't believe this is catfish at all! I remember the Hush Puppy used to be a popular place...parking lot full and await to get a table. Nowadays it's a ghost town. Walked in and the place almost appeared abandoned, had to wait a few minutes for someone to come seat us. There was only one waitress working in the restaurant. Most of the dining room was empty. Lots of things had changed starting with the menu. No more specials or AYCE options. As I sat and waited I browsed reviews to see what others had been saying. Several one star reviews so it was time to test it out. Well they did not disappoint the hush puppies were burning hot out the grease melting the butter as quickly as you dipped or spread it on. They were delicious and moist. I ordered the fried green tomatoes and the portion was huge and they were seasoned perfectly and crispy. For my entree I ordered the catfish platter with a side of collard greens. The fish was seasoned and fried perfectly, not dry with the right amount of crisp. My only complaint was the greens they were bland and had no type of smoke meat in them. I had to put a little hot sauce in them to bring them to life. Overall the taste of the food was delicious but them prices are high...they definitely went up. Would I go back again...probably but I won't be running. Sunday dinner.? I started coming to the restaurant in 1978. This was the edge of the city but we came in droves for those meals. The business has changed but I come back every few months because it had been the only place I could get catfish. Please know the restaurant is the original. The restroom, dining area, menu but not the chefs. I'm bummed. The fish isn't the same catfish. I was just here 6 months ago. The hot sauce is different. The waitress wouldn't bring the manager out. I informed her I thought we bartered the incorrect item if it was possible to get the other catfish. Farm or fresh water. Was it possible to get the version I don't order. Adam finally came from the back to the front where I was standing with He asked if this was my plate. I wasn't sure if he was the Manager because he walked the around the restaurant with the same pair of gloves. Touching everything. He informed me he was the Manager. This fish was the only catfish version the alternative was Swae. What I had eaten here for the 46 years before now was Swae. Adam was hostile, aggressive, defensive because I knew there was a difference in the fish, although I acknowledged I may have made a mistake. Adam seemed uncomfortable. He said the answer was to take the order off the ticket however, all my family had a complaint about the fish. I asked him to not proceed in this manner, but he insisted. I proceeded to my seat while beginning to write my review. Maybe he noticed and shortly requested my party leave. As my family and I left out, Adam the owner and Manager did mention he didn't give a bleep about a review and asked if I realize how many people like me he sees each day. I will not return and now where shall I get real catfish if not a home. So disappointing. I will move on. I'm happy to have had many, many enjoyable, honest experiences in this place. So much better than the last time I ordered. Perfectly crispie delicious catfish. The fried green tomatoes are to die for. The hushpuppies were warm and melted in my mouth, the only thing missing was the honey butter which I forgot to ask for. I ordered for pick up but the service over the phone was easy. The resteraunt appeared empty at 3pm but the hoast was very nice. I miss the large alligator in the front but it gave the waiting area more space. Ok, ordered the catfish meal and it was farm raised, usually thicker.... But once I made it home, the fish was stretchy and tough like and had a hollow taste, feel and look. Not to mention it was SUPER GREASY as well as the hush puppies. I had to squeeze the fish and hush puppies in quite a few paper towels to eat. I know it's fried but come on.... No one drained this food. The male at drive thru was nice but this is a review on the food that has not only increased in price but has now seemed to go down on quality and care of food. Earlier, I ordered The Hush Puppy on Door Dash. I had the Cat fish & shrimp combo in one, That came with the fries, 6 hush puppies, 3 pieces of big fried tilapia fish, and 5 fried shrimp. I took my neighbor who has become like a mother to me over time. She had mentioned several months ago that she would just love to have some fried catfish that reminder her of when she lived in Illinois. I had last eaten here over 20 years ago when I lived by there, and thought what the heck because we both live way out in the north west. We arrived at 4pm to be the first ones in to avoid the rush. I've been here twice and the consistency in the service and food quality is comforting-- the iconic 'hush puppies' are more like corn fritters to me, but they are so delicious that I don't care what they're called, I want them in my mouth!! The corn flavor is almost sweet, the texture snappy with a good outer crunch and inner softness, plus they give you plenty of fresh butter to slather them with. Despite being blackened, I do feel the catfish could be seasoned better, because I could barely taste the flavors of the seasoning rub. In this picture I had french fries, but as a side dish I really recommend the Red Beans and Rice instead, the flavor is great on those and you can get fries anywhere. Loses 1 star because they only sell bottled water (no free water, which feels a bit stingy), but apart from that this is an excellent old-fashioned dining experience. The decor is nostalgic without being tacky, and I'm happy this place has re-opened after shutting down during COVID. The new owners seem to be doing the best they can with what they have. They even give you nice containers for your leftovers, because the portions are way too huge for 1 person to finish all at once. Seems there are new owners and the prices have nearly doubled it seems. Went through the drive thru. The parking lot only had 3 cars when i pulled in. Its 6pm on a Saturday. I assume this is due to no longer having the all you can eat catfish everyday, so business has tanked (I assume). 4 cars in front of me. Waited over 30 minutes to get to the window. $11.89 for a two piece snack pack. Fish is still decent so for the price I wont complain. It started with this waitress who had the nasty attitude when I ask to clean the table. She rolled her eyes and told me I see you!!! I reacted and told her again that the table needed to be cleaned. From the quality of the food, to the taste, to the originality The Hush Puppy has maintained an excellent standard which they have lived by for 50 years. The food is excellent. Unparalleled Fried Cat Fish and Louisiana Seafood Gumbo to die for. The service is always fantastic and the servers and waitstaff are always kind, friendly and helpful. If there was anything negative to say about The Hush Puppy it would be they really need an interior design makeover. But that being said it in no way affects the high quality of their food. I've visited this location and the former location on Nellis (that was the better location in my opinion), but ownership has changed and you can definitely tell by the quality of the food. We ordered the catfish dinner and I had the catfish and shrimp creole dinner. The fried fish was bland at best. It lacked seasoning and flavor. My dish was ok but nothing to brag about. The place is enormous, with various rooms and walk ways, the lay out is very weird and the decor gives you the feeling that it hasn't changed since 1986. The service was slow, to the point of being glacial, I don't think this is from lack of care but more from lack of staffing. The waitress was very nice though. No complimentary water, only bottled water for a charge is available... this is laughable and a true sign of a a struggling business. I have been here a few times and have waited to give a review because it's often a mix bag of what you are going to get. One thing that is always consistent is that the servers are always working hard and always very friendly. So last night we came here for dinner walking in there was no one at the host stand/behind the counter, not unusual as they were busy. Ok, I can understand that, if you are busy and don't want to get behind sometimes you don't want to deal with another table. So the lady took us back to her section and sat us. She was extremely sweet and caring the whole time constantly checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed, but you could tell she seemed a little stressed. We ordered our drinks and they all came out pretty fast except for my glass of wine. That took until about when our starter salads came out. We ordered our food, a pulled pork sandwich, jambalaya, gumbo and a kids meal. When the salads came they are basic run of the mill iceberg lettuce with tomatoes,cucumbers and carrots. Tasted pretty good, fresh ingredients. The food took a little long but again understandable. When it came out it looked really good but that's kinda where it ended. The jambalaya I had was extremely salty and the rice in it was crunchy and undercooked. The gumbo was very fishy, yes gumbo has fish in it, but the flavor was overpowering and not well balanced. The Mac and cheese side despite being in a cast iron serving dish was cold, the flavors were there but it was just cold. The pulled pork sandwich was dry and chewy and definitely needed the side of bbq sauce on it to be able to enjoy it. It was also very very greasy. The kids meal was a simple cheeseburger and fries so no issues there. The restaurant itself was mostly clean and it had some cute decor but they were really behind on clearing tables so there were a lot of tables that hadn't been cleared of plates. I am a little torn on if I would come back again. I have been here before and the food can be really good or can be subpar. I think it depends on the night. The servers are really attentive and sweet. We have had Iva multiple times and she has always been great and very good at what she does. We have frequented The Hush Puppy for a few years now whenever we are in Vegas. We loved their all you can eat option. That got taken away sadly. Then the salad bar disappeared. We called on another occasion to see if their menu changed again and no one answered the phone. We called several times. We decided not to go. On another occasion we drove up @7:15 pm and the parking lot was real empty, they told us that they close at 7pm on Mondays, but every where I checked it says 10 PM on Google and it was recently updated.
