My uncle got the catfish n grits which he pretty much devoured and his potna Darnell a vegan omelet i think which he said was good and looked good . My wife and I came here the other day and had a great experience! We ordered the Gritz Bowl with fried shrimp and jalapeños, Biscuits & Gravy with potatoes, the Sweet Potato Waffle, and the Butter Pecan Waffle. We stacked the waffles ourselves and they were both delicious! Everything came out fresh and tasted great. The fried shrimp were crispy, the gritz were creamy, and the biscuits and gravy were definitely one of my favorites. Our server, Khasheana, was awesome! She was very attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed without making us feel rushed. She really made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. We didn't realize we'd eaten here before until we arrived, but we were just as impressed this time around. The food and service were both excellent. It's a small café, but the wait goes by quickly because the atmosphere is welcoming and people are enjoying good conversation while they dine. This visit, I tried the sweet potato waffle with greens and catfish--delicious! My husband ordered the grits and pork chops, and they were absolutely banging. I cant recommend this place enough. Well worth the wait. The costs are a bit high, but it's not obscene for the quality of the food. Our server was kind, helpful, attentive, and just everything you look for in a server. We waited about 20 minutes to be sat, but you'd expect that at a breakfast place at breakfast time. No concern there. I ordere chicken fried steak- amazing, gritz bites - double amazing, tried my husbands sweet potato waffle - triple amazing! The mac and cheese was just fine. I would easily go back again just got the chicken fried steak, sweet potato waffle, or gritz bites. The ambiance is quite nice. Theres a table dedicated to the matriarch of the establishment, which really adds to the southern, home cooked vibes. Stopped by Gritz Cafe while in town for an AKA sorority conference, and it was a mixed bag. When we first arrived around 1:30pm we were told the inside was closed and only to-go orders were being taken. After standing in line for about 10 minutes to place a to-go order, we were suddenly told we could sit inside after all. We put our name on the waitlist for a table, but it ended up getting given to another party -- seems like there was some miscommunication among the staff. Thankfully, we were able to place our order while waiting, so the food came out shortly after we finally got seated. The space was small and pretty crowded, especially with other conference attendees also stopping in. I ordered the Big Gritz Breakfast -- 2 wings, 2 catfish, eggs, and a waffle -- and it was excellent. So good and filling I needed a nap afterward. The staff were genuinely apologetic about the mix-ups and even gave us free waters on our way out, which was a nice gesture. Once the hot sauce was added it was even better! The waffle itself was also amazing. Now i love me a Waffle House and i swear by their waffles, but these got them beat by 100000! I ordered a plain waffle, my brother got the yams waffle. (Yams in the batter.) OMG!! That was beyond delicious! My sister got the peach cobbler waffle which might've slightly been a bit better than the sweet potato, and i got the regular waffle which was still a good 10/10! They serve it with hot syrup. (Careful cuz it comes in a metal container that's also hot). They melted butter into the waffle before it comes to your table. It was everything!! I definitely would've came back if i didn't have other reservations. The ambiance was super cute. They don't sell alcohol, so we ordered lemonades and sweet teas. They had a nice pandora playlist playing in the background and by the time we left, there was a line out the door. The food was good, but it just didn't have that "wow" factor I was hoping for. It was a fun experience, but the wait was extremely long, and the location was a bit out of the way for us. This is my second review. I left out some things. The atmosphere was good, no ambience music. Really busy and crowded. I didn't know where to go to get a table, so I waited at the order take out for about ten minutes because the person was on the phone. I noticed another entry door and welcome booth. So, I went there and asked and luckily there was one table available for two, so I was seated right away. It took about seven minutes for my waitress to come to the table. I was asked if there were anything I would like to drink, I said just water. It took her another five minutes to bring me water. She dropped off the water and left for another five minutes. Then asked me for my order. The service not good. No smiles. But all the staff(women and men) was no smiles, not very friendly. Seemed mad the whole time. I ordered the Mississippi and Kentucky meal, with sides of collard greens, yams, macncheese, cornbread and biscuit. Everything was five star except the fried fish, it was extremely salty, I couldn't eat it. The wings was were good but small, had bigger at other places, so I was surprised they were small not tiny. The side's could have been slightly bigger portion as well but okay. I waited ten minutes for my waitress to come back after motioning to her I was ready. Never checked on to see if I needed anything. Asked for to go boxes and cups for sides, gave me two with one lid, waited another the minutes for her to come back for the check, asked for another cup and two lids. Yum, yum, and yummier! I've been dying to try this spot after hearing about the legendary wait times, so my colleague and I stopped by for lunch. We were seated in about 15 minutes, which wasn't bad at all! Our server was incredibly sweet and attentive. We both ordered the catfish, grits, and waffles (I added eggs with cheese to mine). After hearing so much we finally made it out. I called on a weekend to hear that you gotta wait and they cut the line an hour before closing, so we took our chances with a Monday. Paid off. Of all the stops on our food crawl, Gritz Cafe was hands-down the most satisfying! Comfort food at its finest. I completely cleaned my plate--wings, gritz, greens, and mac 'n' cheese. We arrived a little after 12pm, so it was busy with a few people ahead of us and lots of pickup orders going out, but the wait was only about 10 minutes and absolutely worth it. I was in town for the Chris Brown concert and like many others I came to Gritz Café after seeing so many great reviews. I fully understand that a popular restaurant will come with a long wait. That was not the issue. The real problem was the lack of communication. I arrived around 1:45 pm and was told there would be about a two hour wait for a table. The hostess suggested I try takeout, which sounded like a good option since there were outdoor seats available. However, when I went to place my takeout order I was told they were no longer accepting any more orders. At that point there was no way to eat at all. I had already spent more than twenty dollars on an Uber to get there only to find out I could not be seated or order anything. I then had to spend even more money on rides to another restaurant and back to my hotel. That part was especially frustrating because a simple sign outside or clearer communication from the hostess could have saved me the trip and the cost. I was excited to try this place but I never even got the chance. Maybe the food is as good as the reviews say, but my experience was more about poor communication than the wait time. Hopefully this is something they can improve on so other guests do not walk away just as disappointed. read more

The Gritz had a big menu of delicious options but you really have to choose from the abundance of deliciousness. We all went with combo plates. Some with yam waffles and chicken and a Holy Trinity with cat fish fillets. We also all had "muddy waters" to drink - their version of a Arnie Palmer. Everything arrived hot and delicious - from the Mac n Cheese to waffles and the chicken and fish. Not much talking happened at our table but guttural moans of satisfaction broke the silence.
