I have been seeing Dr. Riggs for over a decade now and have never been disappointed by even one of my visits. He is personable, professional and very knowledgable which are important factors for someone who has been reliant on contacts/glasses since grade 2. He has a way of picking great staff and seems well-connected with technology. The reason for this (long overdue) review is that recently I had PRK eye surgery. After receiving two different referrals from Grossmont Vision to have consultations prior to choosing a surgeon, I received two very different opinions from each surgeon. This left me confused and admittedly scared on the type of surgery (and consequently the long-term risks and results) as well as which surgeon to choose. So I called and left a message for Dr. Riggs (as he had prepared me beforehand for the potential news of not being a LASIK candidate). Dr. Riggs called me back that same day and took the time to listen to my concerns. Then he called the surgeon I was leaning toward to discuss my case who then called me. Although it was frustrating to hear two opposite opinions from the eye surgeons, in hindsight I am glad I did because it made my apprehension about PRK less so when looking at the (worse) alternative surgery. I chose Dr. Alison Gordon at Gordon-Weiss and felt completely at ease with a difficult (and very important) decision. I have been coming here for years , they have a great selection of eyeglasses and are located in the grossmont center. But I have had my share of bad experiences here. They are very pushy and upsale everything even with insurance. I did chose to upgrade my eyeglasses because they have very nice brand named ones. But recently I noticed more and more that they up-sale you with everything. I called to make an appointment for a contact fitting to see if contacts was going to be a possibility for me, after they quoted me a fee of over 140$ I was alarmed. I called then and had them break down the charges and it was all up-sales. So I called my insurance and they should only change me 60$. It's very unprofessional to up-sale a customer who is only asking for an examination, I can go anywhere without insurance an still pay less! I spend hundreds of dollars here and I feel unappreciated and I can't trust this place. I work in the grossmont center I will no longer be referring coworkers or friends to this place. read more

Had a great experience . Moved to La Mesa area about 9 months ago and had previously been going to an optometrist in Monterey county for over 15 yrs. Was a little scared of seeing someone different. But everything went smooth. Doctor was very polite and the staff was very friendly. I wasn't planning on getting new glasses but they had a sweet selection I could not resist. Have been having issues with wearing contacts due to allergies , doctor recommended I try a more breathable brand they get there in two weeks and cannot wait to try them out . read more

Everyone here is amazing. Go there. The exam was the BEST exam I've received in ages. Fast service. I felt understood, accepted, and validated----or maybe I'm just happy to be able to see clearly! Contacts check. Glasses---urmmmm, I have to go back for those--the frame selection is great and with clear vision (see what I did there) I could tell this visit was not the one to frame shop,(my time crunch). I have purchased 2 pair of glasses at Grossmont Vision and have always received friendly, professional service from all the staff. The last pair I purchased were made exactly as requested but after wearing them for over 6 months I realized my choice of the size of the glasses was wrong for me. The heaviness of the lens was just not comfortable. I went in to see if there was anything that could be done. Despite the fact that I had waited way past the warranty time optician Lynn Thans was extremely accommodating and worked to remake the glasses for me. I would highly recommend them. read more

Let me start by saying I've been wearing glasses since I was 10 years old. My experiences here have been the best all around I've ever had. I've seen both doctors, who were both informative, patient, congenial, and gave me a great rx. The office is smaller than the larger chain optometrist offices, but I like that because it affords me more individual attention. They also have a great selection of frames. Just wanted to inform patients to check with their insurance coverage and Co-pays prior to their visit. My husband and I both were charged copays. I called my insurance and was told we don't have Co-pays. Had to drive back to get a refunds when we are super busy. Our appointments were different days and we are new patients. I let this go because we all make errors and I had a great experience with the doctor and two of the younger staff. My husband said the Asian lady (sorry, I don't her name) was pushy during his visit. She was also rude when we went to get our refunds. When I called five months later to make an appointment for contacts Asian lady answered politely and scheduled my appointment. She told me she was going to check my insurance and call me back by end of day. She told me to call back if I didn't receive a call. I didn't receive a call. When I called one of younger staff members helped me check insurance. She told me I didn't have any available covered appointments until October. Which is fine, but part of me wonders if I showed up would they have charged me out of hand because they didn't check my policy before providing treatment and if my time would have been wasted by showing up only to be denied because of lack of coverage. This bothers me as a busy working lady who would have to take time off work to make appointment. So just check your insurance prices before treatment. After reading comments below it seems others have experienced similar issues with insurance and money. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Riggs for three years now and have to say he is awesome! Very knowledgeable and friendly. He always prescribes the minimal prescription needed for you to see well. Other optometrist in contrast will give you prescriptions that make you feel like you can see through walls. Way too strong. I was so reluctant to get glasses but these people made it so easy. Dr. Riggs is so friendly and knowledgeable. It was so cool to see my eye through the Optomap retina exam. Riggs explained how the eye works in a way I could really understand. Lynn was very friendly as well and nice as can be. The thing I liked most was the fact that none of them tried to sell me on anything they are there just to help me get what I wanted. I had to leave work early because my eyes suddenly got terribly inflamed and I could barely keep them open. Desperate for a same day appointment, I tried this place, and got one in an hour with Dr. Riggs. He was quick yet thorough, and had a very friendly manner. He saw instantly that it was viral conjunctivitis, and was so thoughtful as to give me samples of medications which would otherwise have been quite expensive with a prescription. I paid half of what I would have for an ophthalmologist, not to mention the cost of the medications (which I later learned are actually quite expensive) and would never have gotten a same day appointment. They were very helpful in explaining my insurance benefits, and the whole examination process. The Doctor was extremely helpful in getting me the somewhat complicated prescription I need. In the end I got a cool pair of glasses, delivered on time that work for me perfectly. The two stars is for the selection of glasses. I went in looking to get a new pair, but the customer service was enough to drive me out. The whole time I was there, I felt pressured to chose a pair of glasses quickly. When I didn't like the pairs that the associate was choosing for me, she seemed to be getting frustrated with me. I apologized multiple times for taking so long (I was in and out in 30 mins...). I ended up feeling too uncomfortable in there, and decided to leave. When I left, I noticed that they left forms with my personal information lying on the table. I went to go pick them up for them, but I think that upset them with the way they snapped, "we will do that." I then thought I had accidentally left my paper with my prescription on it, and politely ASKED if they might have it. They immediately went into defense mode and said they didn't have it and made me feel very stupid. I did have the paper in my purse the whole time, but the way they responded to me was so unkind that I left shaking and feeling that I never wanted to go in there again, and I would warn anyone considering going there, to not. All I did was make a phone call and attempt to make an appointment. The person that answered the phone was very sweet and helpful. When I asked to get a quote so I knew what I would pay upfront, I was transferred to a different person. This person was not so friendly very rude, gave me an incorrect quote because she did not read through my authorization of benefits. I thought I was in the wrong so I called my insurance plan to make sure I understood my benefits. And yes the cost that she wanted upfront should be covered by my insurance. All in all this person made me feel like she wanted to collect money upfront that should be billed to my insurance, and did not even care to take the time to look over it again and potentially keep me as a customer. I was very excited to go to this facility because of all the great reviews, too bad a phone call with bad customer service had to ruin it. If there were a 2.5 star option, I would go with that. So I guess I'll be nice today and round up since I wasn't able to experience a complete visit. I'm partially ticked with my insurance company and partially ticked with these guys. Although my insurance company had this business listed as a participating provider, I clearly asked the receptionist to double check this. She assured me she would check it out and let me know if my insurance company was not in their network. She also assured me this would be done before the date of my appointment. Well it turned out to be a wasted trip because they didn't take my insurance. It was the same receptionist and she told me she was the one who failed to notified me due to a family emergency. Although I respect her honesty, she was clearly very sick when she was telling me this. She could barely talk and I could tell she was in pain. I visited today for the first time. I had three pairs of prescription lenses (not purchased through them) that were either loose, tilted or had completely come apart. Their staff took care of me immediately. The lady who helped me did full on eyeglass surgery on two pairs and reset another, also adding silicon pads. A-mazing! She was happy to do it, fast and friendly and wouldn't charge me a dime. I will go there and nowhere else for my eye care needs from now on. Dr. Kevin Riggs is amazing! Explained everything he was doing and very quickly too. He helped me understand to the best of my ability what exactly was going on with my vision and why it happens. I'm usually very careful when I pick my doctors but I'm happy through my insurance that I found his office. The optician Lynn Thana is very friendly and helped me pick out new glasses although they were steeper in price than I would have liked but I now have two glasses that I can use. I told him I thought I might need reading glasses and he tested me for that and assesed I didn't need them but gave me a trial pair of contacts that helped me read better. I also mentioned the irritation I was getting from my contacts and I got a trial size eye drops for allergies. I had a horrible experience with another doctor. This office was clean, quiet, and the staff were exceptionally friendly. They doctor spent almost 40 minutes getting my vision just right. I explained I've had really bad headaches and my eyes hurt. Turns out the other place I had been ignored my astigmatism and just strengthened my power. I am now a happy camper! The first day I stopped by they were steam-cleaning their carpets so they were closed. The second day I stopped by they were still closed, and I could see their sign then, saying they were closed on weekends. The third day I stopped by they were of no use to me whatsoever. I had a broken frame on my $200 pair of eyeglasses, and the lady just told me they didn't have a replacement frame. This is the third place in a row that had that same attitude, "We don't have your frame, so we can't help you, so go away." I have no idea what to do next! Does some other place have the frame? Can the lenses be reground to fit some existing frame? Can some places repair the frame? Do I need to get a new pair of glasses altogether? Who can even give me this info? This place is either as clueless as I am, or is just unwilling to help, so in either case they deserve a bottom ranking. read more
