I've been here a few times and the service has been slower than most restaurants. I may have been there on busy days, but all three times... The pizza is delicious! You have to ask for that menu though, which I found weird. I had a burger once too and it was very good. However, my mom and her friend ordered the steak and were disappointed. I had the 16oz ribeye, cooked med to perfection. No need for any sauce or junk. Was juicy, tender and a great cut of meat. The staff is excellent, and you receive your food rather quickly, especially for how busy it was on a Friday night. The loaded baked potato was also cooked incredibly well. The food was very good! We were a party of 6 so as a group we tried a number of items. All received high approval. I had the pork prime rib with mushroom gravy (the special) with red potato mashed potatoes. It was prepared to perfection and the gravy went well with the pork and the mash. The strip steak and the ribeye were also excellent as were the babyback ribs. A good selection of beers and a full bar as well. I will be making this a regular dining experience. read more

I have a question. Why is an 8 week old baby a "liability" is a facility that serves food, is categorized as a restaurants and not a bad- at 11am on Sunday? Seriously? We were refused service and asked to leave because we have a 8 WEEK OLD BABY with us. I'm pretty sure he- who is exclusively nursing- wasn't interested in ordering a beer. I could see a limit on kids during evenings and nights- but brunch hour on a Sunday? All the times I've been here before, I've never once had good service. Drinks never get refilled. We never get sauces, Extra napkins, boxes- all because we never have a server check on us. To drive all the way out to the valley- it's not worth it. DONT go here. read more

I went here with my son and his girlfriend for an early evening drink. Went into the new side and the bartender was leaning on his elbow talking to some friends that were seated on the other side of the bar. There was one or two other tables in the place. The bartender never greeted us or even looked at us. He continued to talk to his friends while we waited for a drink. Had to actually ask him to help us. I've been here before and the bartenders do whatever they feel like doing and do not hustle to serve anyone. My son was also there one night and asked for a red beer. The bartender said "You don't really want that do you?" Apparently he had already put the tomato juice away somewhere and it was "inconvenient" for him to go get it. One word can describe the food, atmosphere and above all the service at the Grub-Stake.....Abysmal! The waitress (whom I did not know at all) must have decided that she did NOT like me because she kept ignoring me completely....my drinks stayed at the bar till the hostess brought it over and asked if someone was waiting for their drink....then the waitress took my companions' orders for appetizers and didn't even ask me what I wanted....my friend physically ran after her to add my order (which was never brought but I was charged for it anyway)....my friends got their food while I was still waiting for my burger and they were done eating before I received my food....and when I got it the burger was cold. Needless to say, this waitress received no tip from me. Then as it was a Friday night there was music, but it was so loud even in the dining area that you could not hear the person sitting next to you. I made the mistake of going back that second time (the first time was almost as bad)....but NEVER again. read more

Breakfast and drinks were meh, especially considering the cost, servers were not friendly, environment was awkward. Plus, we got cut off. I've never been cut off in my life. We weren't being belligerent. The waitress had just decided we had too many. We asked her about it, and she said it was because we had 5 drinks in 5 hours (while we were watching a football game), which she said was too much. What. She proceeded to become defensive and told us a story of someone who got in a drunk driving accident recently. By far the best restaurant for overall variety. Louie and his wait staff have always been great to us. The burgers are awesome. I highly recommend the mushroom swiss burger and add blue cheese to it. The waffle fries are pretty good as well. But the wings are where they get set apart from any other restraunt. We ask for them to be cooked for 30 minutes and they come out perfect. Well, I have loved just about everything I have eaten here. People obviously differ on how they like their burgers, but I love theirs. It is very Montana and much updated in the last ten years. They are extremely busy all of the time, but if I can, I will go into the new bar and get better service and a great view. My favorite for breakfast is a sausage and egg croissant. This place has really grown on us over the years. The bar section is a great open seating area with live bands on the weekends. The restaurant side is a bit nostalgic. Not the best seating but comfortable enough. The menu is made up of cafe food with a few extra selections. I really enjoy the food but it is a little over priced, Ex. Calazone $15. It's easy to spend $50 on dinner or $100 if your treating. We visit this place once or twice a month. We visit enough to have experienced a little of everything with service. For the most part it has been pretty good, however my last few visits have been exceptional. This place has gone down hill. More worried about $5 cover charge for their crappy sounding music than customer service. Pizza is way overpriced for what you get. Your better off just running 8 miles to town for quality meal. The new addition is horrible. I was there with maybe 2 other tables. And the girl that was across the room laughing and echoing throughout the entire place. Was enough for me to leave. Bands refuse to play there due to the bad acoustics and having to use there crappy equipment. Bands have tried hanging blankets up to stop the echoing only to be told to take them down. read more

We went to the grub stake to eat on Tuesday night, we arrived a little before 8pm, sat ourselves, like the board at the entrance indicates. We sat in a booth between two other occupied booths, and every server in the place walked past us at least 3 times in the 10 minutes we sat waiting for someone to serve us, or even acknowledge that we were there. Maybe even to let us know that we were sitting in the wrong section or it was too late to take any tables (they say they close at 9 though). We ended up leaving 10 minutes after sitting down, and still no one said anything. Will not be returning. This is unfortunate as it's the closest restaurant to my house, and working at a hotel I recommend this place a lot to the travelers that stay with me, but I won't be doing that anymore. The waitress said well its on a timer so no way it was overcooked, and well next time it will be better. No other attempts to make it right. There won't be a next time soon. I suppose on any given day the food and/or service at any restaurant can be excellent, lousy, or anywhere in between. Happily we struck paydirt when we went last Sunday. Two of us ordered pizzas- mine was some the best I've had in town- canadian bacon with pineapple. The other pizza was also very good. The third member of our party ordered the reuben sandwich, which they said was the best they've ever had (which is saying a lot since they're well along in years!) Not sure what to make of this place. It is always busy, but that could be because it is the only decent sit-down restaurant on this extreme corner of Helena. I can also say the wait staff is friendly and tires hard. And the kitchen, they seem to try hard too. But in the end I was underwhelmed. First, the atmosphere. We ate there Sunday for dinner. And unless you like your kids around drunk strangers, this place is probably not the best place for you. The core demographic seems to be 28 to 40 year old and dating or recently married. And a fan of booze. There were drunk people (not fall over drunk...just happy drunk) all around us. We ordered the New York Strip and a burger. Both were cooked well. Food was slightly above average. But we were left unimpressed because of the crowd and the atmosphere. Might eat there again, but we it would probably have to be lunch and during the middle of the week. read more

Yes, if you like cold nachos that have sit for several minutes after being put up at the counter and listening to the bar tender complain about getting less than 10% tips from customers all day and if you like Patron shots blended with water( not cold so he shook it up with ice which is absolutely a no no) then by all means this is you place. Note to staff check the bar set up when you arrive not at the end of your shift and try to blame it on someone else.I will not be back. Attention day bartender-do a better job and get a better tip. Pay more attention to details, customers do not want to hear about your issues and it is very unprofessional to complain so everyone at the bar can hear you but the one who is really hurt by this is the owner that loses return business because of this. I have never submitted a review in my life but this was ridiculously bad. The nachos were cold and so unappealing with the small ramekins of sour cream and salsa. They weren't even served on a plate but a metal pizza pan. He even asked if I wanted a fork instead of bringng the set up with the order which would be the only way to eat these- beans slathered on the bottom were not even visible until I rolled back the cold cheese and chips to see them, hardly any chicken either. It was a mess that he should never had served and the reason they sat so long is because he was complaining and griping and wanted to leave. I tipped 15% only because the tab had been switched to the oncoming bartender, if I had tipped according to service it would have been a lot less like the other customer that afternoon. If you want a nice dinner on a Saturday night around 7 pm, you might as well save yourself the disappointment. We (4 adults and 1 -5 year old) went there for dinner and it was a disaster. The young girls that were supposed to be checking with people coming in weren't very attentive and weren't even out checking on people...not sure what they were doing. The salads were weak - not even a handful of old bagged iceberg lettuce on a salad plate. I ordered the mushroom swiss burger medium rare, and was told that they are always served medium well. Uhmmm, I don't think dry, gray, cold, tasteless burgers even qualify for either of those. Plus the fries were cold. Our order took over 40 minutes to get to us. It took 15 minutes to get a beer. The waitress didn't really ask us how our food was. Basically, she said "Is everything ok?" and before we could even say anything she said, "oh, it must be you have your food:" Uhm, ya, we were eating because we were hungry and didn't dare ask for something to be corrected. Plus our 5 year old was put through enough waiting. The price of the food was not worth what we got. It was not a quiet place to visit with people as you can hardly hear yourself think. I think this place is in way over it's head. If you are going there to have a beer (which you may get before a 15 minute wait) and party, well, that is all I can even think about recommending it for. read more

Went there on 5-14-14 and the food was atrocious. Took 30 minutes to get 2 salads and a burger. It's hard to screw up a salad, but my taco salad was the worst I'd ever had - gotten alot better at a fast food joint for half the price. Had the Manly Salad and it was cut up iceberg lettuce with a few pieces of steak over the top. The egg was wet and soggy. One cut up piece of tomato. Couldn't eat it. Definitely Not worth the $10. The burger was sloppy and messy. Also, the bathroom was gross. The faucet almost fell off when I washed my hands. The doorknob is bent and broken. No locks on the bathroom stall. I will never go back to the Grubstake EVER. read more

Wife and I went there for our anniversary. I ordered the prime rib ( Duke) and the wife ordered the New York Strip ( basically $24.00 each ). We got a salad served on a saucer plate. We waited 30 minutes for the food. We both ordered med rare. My meal arrived and the prime rib was awesome. My wife's steak arrived and it was literally raw. Sent it back to the cook, and twice they sent the same steak back barely more than raw. We figured you would get a new steak cooked correctly for the price, evidently not at this steak house. Three of us went to Grubstake on Sunday, April 29, 2018 for breakfast. The time was approximately 9a.m. We seated ourselves and a friendly waitress brought us menus and asked us what we would like to drink. We ordered coffee and water, although we thought water was a given. We wanted to place our breakfast order at that time but we were told a waitress would be by to get our order. We waited for quite some time to place our breakfast order. We then waited for our drinks and they didn't show up for another 10 minutes. We then asked a table busser if we could get our drinks. We were told they come with the meal. We informed the busser we would like the drinks right away. They never did bring them to us. There was a lady that came in after us and asked us if the table beside us was occupied. We told her we didn't see anyone sitting there so it must be OK for her to sit there if she wanted to. Immediately after seating herself, she was brought water and coffee. I don't know what made her so special that she was provided coffee and water and she didn't even have to wait a minute before it was brought to her and we were still waiting for ours. I could go on and on but I won't bore you. I don't know if it was something against one of us, all of us, or just no customer service skills in the morning. I heard the morning crew isn't very good there before. I guess I will second that statement. I won't be going back. That is for sure. We finally got up and left. read more
