My wife and I went to Grumpy Jake's for lunch. It was our first time there. We were greeted immediately by our very friendly waiter. The decor is very much in the western style as you would expect for a Bbq place and very relaxed feeling. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich and my wife ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. The food came out quickly. The fries had spice on them and were very good. Thin cut, cooked well and awesome. My brisket was super tender and juicy, as was my wife's pulled pork. The buns seemed like homemade and had butter on them. They give you what looks like a syrup dispenser full of their house made bbq sauce. It was a great sauce with lots of flavor. We put it in our sandwiches, since it does not come pre-sauced, and I also dipped my fries in it. Yummy! Prices were very reasonable, looks like lots of amazing things on the menu, friendly & quick service and awesome food. What more could you ask for. Outside the smoker fills the parking lot with mesquite smoke. Walking to the entrance I get a good look at the pig on the roof. A wall inside is dedicated to John Wayne. I wonder if the rifle above his portrait will still fire. I was huge fan of John's westerns. Then I started watching those new fangled spaghetti westerns with the awesome Ennio Morricone soundtracks. Grumpy Jake's has the look of an old bbq from the days John Wayne movies were in the theaters. I ordered Jake's Super Sampler to get a variety of meats. Chopped chicken was breast meat and a bit dry with mild flavor. The sweet bbq sauce helped. Shredded pork was also a bit dry with minimal flavor. Beef brisket was melt in your mouth tender and had a delicious smoky mesquite flavor. Pork ribs were amazing. Fat on the ribs had rendered and the remaining pork was extremely tender, moist, and full of flavor. Fresh potato chips were crunchy and had a delicious fresh potato flavor. Grumpy Jake doesn't own this place anymore but the new owners still smoke with mesquite wood and I love the beef brisket, pork ribs, and potato chips. I think the Duke would like it here too as I could see him mounting his horse and riding off into the woods after a good meal. read more

This was my first stop at Grumpy Jake's and I was not disappointed. We ordered the chicken fried steak and the meatloaf. The chicken fried steak was so big that it covered the plate, was perfectly cooked and the gravy was plentiful and very good. The meatloaf was smothered in brown gravy and it tasted homemade. We had the garlic mashed potatoes and they were awesome. The Mac and cheese was good but tasted kind of like Kraft Deluxe with some extra cheese added. It lacked that homemade quality but it was good. The coleslaw had a good flavor but it's chopped really fine so not a lot of texture. The cornbread was very tasty and moist. They have a case of pies at the entrance that looked wonderful but I was way too full to taste one. Maybe next time. Overall it was a good experience. The staff was super friendly and efficient. The atmosphere of the restaurant is down home comfortable. We will go back again. read more

I'm conflicted with this place. I really want to like it, but with all things considered I wouldn't recommend it to a friend. First, they need to update the location on google maps, as it's been at the red pinged dot in the map since before I moved here over a year ago. It's not by Home Depot. Second, they have super cute decor and you can tell they take pride in the theme HOWEVER it's like they rented a dilapidated rundown building, and didn't bother cleaning it before adding all of the cute decor. The tile needs deep cleaned (the grout was legit black) and it's obvious they don't take care to move things and mop beneath them or in the corners. The walls need repainted, and were dirty where they hadn't covered it up with wood siding. The popcorn ceiling screams asbestos. The menu I got had bbq sauce stuck to it, too. Had I noticed all of that right off the bat I would have walked out TBH but because of the cute decor I didn't notice it until I was in the middle of my meal. As for the food - I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The bun looked underdone but tasted good. They gave a nice heaping portion of pork and gave the bbq sauce on the side. The pork alone was rather flavorless, however their bbq sauce was excellent and added the necessary flavor. Taste-wise I would order it again. The potato salad was rather meh. Needed a ton of salt and pepper to give it any real flavor. You have to request a pickle if you want one, according to the menu. My food was served on a massive dinner plate which made it appear to be super small portions. I ate everything on my plate and left satisfied but it likely wouldn't have completely filled up my husband if he were really hungry. Overall, the pulled pork sandwich tasted great with the sauce but with the sides and presentation of the entire meal I would consider it to be just "fairly good". I likely won't return due to how dirty the place was. If it's that bad in the front of the house, how bad is in in the kitchen?? read more

Great food! But not the best I've had! Still a delicious food for a place you don't expect have great bbq. I was a little bit disappointed with the signs prior to getting in by the window, and the bathroom is very clean. I would've given them a 5 if it was cleaner and the food was more presentable. Food looked not very presentable but the flavors and taste were good. What a delightful place. If you enjoy smoked meat by all means come here. My husband ordered the Super BBQ sampler, he enjoyed every bite, especially the fall off the bone ribs. I enjoyed my 1/2 BBQ chicken and the coleslaw was the best I ever had. The service was superb and although we were unable to try a slice of their in house homemade pie. So, off to Show Low to pick up new eyeglasses. Well, you know a girls gotta eat, right? But...where? Hmm, so many choices. Ok ok ok, I "settled" on the Brisket & Rib plate. Sides were Cowboy Beans and cole slaw. I had intended on taking the beans home, but you know what a joke that is! I finished that bowl! Brisket was soooo tender! How did Alannah Miles say it in Black Velvet..."a new religion that'll bring ya to your knees". Wow, did I mention how tender it was? And I had to laugh out loud when I tried to pick up one of the ribs. These things, you can't bite the meat off the bone, it just FALLS off!!! Both the meats were tender, smoky-flavored, and simply enhanced by the BBQ sauce. Overall, just a damn good meal! The aroma! Open up those olfactory passages, savor and BREATHE in the smell, let your taste buds foodgasm when you take a *small* mouthful. Ohhhh my! The **warmed** BBQ sauce in the pitcher was just an added bonus, too! Tart with a bit of a bite to it and oh, so sweet & smoky!! Cole slaw was nice and crunchy, a bit sweet. I used to like eating here. Yesterday I ordered a patty melt. It was the worst sandwich ever. The bread and meat were so dry and tasted like leather. Cheese was so thin it looked see thru. Small teaspoon of onions with little flavor. My Dad ordered the cod, very overcooked. His sides of green beans and squash looked old and overcooked as well. Other family member had a burger which looked great and tasted good according to him. Food for entire table of seven was not all at once. First person to get their food was half done eating before last person got their meal. I hope someone from management reads the reviews and increases education for kitchen staff. I've driven by Grumpy's several times when in the Pinetop Lakeside area and finally stopped in for lunch with my better half. The place is kind of homey like a good little neighborhood BBQ joint should be. We ordered and got our food quickly. I did spring for the zucchini as an appetizer, you know, they were pretty good, not too greasy and good flavor, they were cut like spears, I do prefer the slices but what the heck. I had the pulled pork with beans and cole slaw Mrs. M had the ribs with beans and cole slaw. Our food was pretty OK, the pork could have used a little more flavor and the ribs were a little over cooked but the beans and cole slaw were on the money. I was stuffed like a pig which is my normal routine but when our waitress asked if we wanted a cobbler for dessert I could not say no. I have a real weakness for Peach Cobbler.. Id walk 7 miles to school through the snow with newspaper in my shoes (my mother used to say this) just for a warm cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Actually she never did it for a cobbler, it was because back in the day she had to walk to school etc. etc. Anyway the cobbler was warm and tasty and I woofed it down. So there you go, i'm going with 4 stars cuz of the friendly attitude and decent food. We visited here earlier today. We ordered the BBQ nachos, and the large sampler. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and fast. It appears to be a family owned establishment. The BBQ sauce on the nachos had what I considered a underlying sweet potato taste. I hadn't tasted one like it before. I personally didn't prefer it but my wife liked it. The rest of the nachos were very good. The 1/4 rack of ribs is subjective to each person on what is considered over cooked and cooked right. Some believe if it is cooked right it will still have some chew and pull to it when biting it off the bone. Others want them to be fall off the bone. I like fall off the bone and easily removed from the rib. They were in my opinion cooked and rendered perfectly. The meat was moist and had a light mesquite flavor. The shredded/pulled chicken I couldn't eat. It was cooked just right and moist, but the flavor was in my opinion very unpleasant (with or without sauce). I tried it with sauce first and didn't like it. I tried it without sauce and the flavor was worse. The pulled pork was very good. I didn't try the brisket, but the wife said she liked the brisket. The beans didn't have much flavor at all to them. The sauce overwhelmed them and didn't marry each other well. Bathrooms were clean. Not my style of BBQ at all, but others obviously like it. As with anything in cooking taste and preference is subjective to the individual. I believe the sauce is very runny, and needs tweaked more. The pulled chicken go back completely to the drawing board in regard to whatever is being added to them. read more

The server brought me a sample of the brisket and it was juicy and decent, not great, but decent. I went ahead and ordered the brisket platter. What I was served was completely different from the sample, total bait and switch, it was SUPER dry and literally fell apart with just the fork barely even touching it. It was falling apart to where it looked like dry tuna fish in texture. So absolutely disgusting. I actually threw up afterwards. The only reason I gave 2 stars was because the server was nice and attentive, the onion rings were pretty damn good and the homemade potato chips were great.
