If you like bargains, and are an adventurous eater, check this store out. They cull the shelves of stores like Costco, Sprout's, and Whole Foods and present odd lots, stuff that wasn't popular (but is still interesting!), overstocks, seasonal, and who-knows-why-they-were-taken-off-the-shelf items. Sign up for texts and emails and you'll be showered with coupons. Although I shop mainly for food here, they have everything a variety store has: clothes, perfume, toiletries, household goods, school supplies, furniture, cleaning supplies, loads of holiday items, etc. The two main downsides for me are that some of the food items are close to expiration date, and sometimes the lines to check out take a long time. The helpful staff will try their best to give you all of the discounts that you're entitled to. I shop the Santee store as well as the Lemon Grove, which frequently have some interesting finds, making my trips there both fun and productive. read more

Do not, I repeat, do not attempt to go during the holidays. I mean, you actually may not love the folks on your shopping list to begin with if you're shopping here, but to each their own. The parking this time of year, while not terrible, it's not great either. The selection is the usual unpredictable items deeply discounted, but the part of GTM that fails this time of year is the long lines checking out. Seriously, an updated computer system would do wonders for efficiency but where else are you going to get a (pretty) nice Dutch oven for $20? The answer is: nowhere. Only GTM. read more

Okay, just plane craziness in the morning opening hour! There was a line of 20+ people jockeying for position and ready to race in for the values that abound! They have a varying selection of goods that Tatar a fantastic price! I was there for one item; which was not available this time but might be again. There were camping gear to furniture to pool cleaning apparatus and let's not forget about the food and beverage selections! Immense! I watched as one person loaded their card down with so many cans of a particular beverage that's normally $2+ dollars a can but was available for less than a Dallas each! I was at GTM again! But the Lemon Grove location. This location is highly organized, with WOW deals at excellent value. Not just make-up items but food, clothing, pottery, furniture, electronics. I normally enjoy coming here because the staff is usually friendly and helpful--but the manager, Monica, really stands out in the worst way. She doesn't greet you with a smile or make any effort to be kind. Every time I've had her as a cashier, she never asks if we have any coupons or offers to apply any discounts. What makes it worse is that every other cashier here automatically uses their coupon booklets and tries to give customers the best deals--they actually care. Monica, on the other hand, acts like it's a burden to even ring you up. Her attitude is cold and unwelcoming, and it honestly makes the whole experience uncomfortable. It's disappointing when management sets such a negative tone, especially when the rest of the team does a great job. I have been a GTM'er since there first location downtown. The vibe is so much to my liking. A wide variety of interesting, quality merchandise at hard to beat prices (gotta' use coupons though)! I never had much interaction with employees until now and I can't let the recent, heartwarming experience with Charles go unnoticed. My saga started at the after Christmas (35% off everthing) sales. Got there early and found the coolest humungous rolling toolbox that stood 6ft tall. It was the answer to the chaos and loud profanities whenever I looked for a socket or tool in my garage. Guys, you know what I mean! Standing next to the tool chest I flagged Charles down and asked for help finding the price. There was no one else around. When I heard the price , I immediately said "Ill take it". When Charles pulled out his sales book to tag the item, another employee from behind said it was too late because it was sold. We were puzzled? How, when we didn't see anyone else around? Turned out another customer saw my interest and literally behind my back grabbed another worker passing by and in the time it took to find the price, had the employee start writing the sale. It was rude of the customer, and thoughtless of the other employee not to ask us first if we were interested, before offering it to the passerby. Charles knew what happened and had a lot of empathy for what we both saw was clearly wrong. At that point is where Charles became a hero! He offered to keep his eyes open for any similar type tool chests so I would be first to know when it was on the floor. He took my name and number and promised to text me. Leaving the store, I asked for the manager, Gilbert to suggest that employees should be trained to always defer to customer who was there first before tagging an item. This is where Gilbert became a hero as well... Like Charles, I was struck by his empathy and kind nature. He was forthright about that man who snuck up from behind and said he had seen him do this before. He wanted to make it right and officially instructed Charles to call and tag anything similar for me, before it got to the floor. He then extended the higher discount indefinitely until I found something. Here is where Charles went way "above and beyond" to make things right. Over the next several weeks he texted me a half dozen times with pictures hoping something similar would fit my needs. Finally yesterday more than a month later he sent another pic...and bingo! I rushed in and it was still in back waiting for me (he was purposely slow putting it out so I would have first chance). Who would have expected this a month later? What employee is so conscientious? It is simple. An employee that doesn't just care about how much he makes per hour. He cares about making customers happy. Gilbert, trust me. Charles is management material. Thankfully, there isn't a store like this within a reasonable distance of my home because it featured everything you could possibly need, from food and clothing to toiletries and furniture. The prices were so cheap that they included both a discount and a clearance discount. It was a quarter of what I would have paid at Target or Walmart after using coupons from their website. Nina, the clerk at the register, was a joy to deal with. The fact that she was not only friendly and engaging but also well-versed in the current sales and coupons she could use to help her customers save money was an added bonus. I came in a few months ago and this place was so busy. So well organized and of course I went in looking for some office supplies...came out with 2 basketfulls! OMG awesome deals but let me tell you What made this trip make me want to write a review. The lines at the registers were long and I'm ADHD so it can be a bit overwhelming for me. Luckily we chose a line that the cashier was fast. When we got up to the register she greeted us with a smile!!!? Who does that nowadays? Her attitude and politeness was through the roof. Also known as the Costco dumping grounds, there are numerous deals here. Kirkland central. Discontinued stuff to the max. Plenty of name brands also, but selection not the greatest. It's ok with me, I've bought everything here with substantial savings. Who doesn't like to save a few bucks? I can't say no to that ever, ever. Sign up to the email club and you'll get fat coupons like 30% off periodically and what's on sale and such. All kinds of random things from furniture, clothing, off-brand foods and more on the cheap. Lines can be long, people can be rude, and this location is hard to even get parking in the lot. Deep breathing helps calm the stress somewhat. Sometimes I park by the bar, Grover's Tavern(see review), the only parking available. If you happen to want more selection, try the Santee location, they are a much bigger store. read more

Purchased this comforter set for $47.99 then went back the next day saw the same comforter with a cheaper price $39.99 asked one of the employees at the customer service desk if I could get the credit back since it's the same item with a different price, I even had my receipt to show I purchased the previous day. I was told no, I even said I bring it back for you to confirm, still was told no! Poor customer service and not acknowledging they was wrong with the pricing. If you enjoy shopping at the Santee location there's no good reason to shop here. The parking lot in Lemon Grove is just as bad, maybe worse, and it's in a sketchy part of town. GTM is a good discount store but to get the best value you have to wait for the right coupons. They strategically space out men's, women's, and children's coupons on alternate weeks so you can never get great deals for the whole family on one visit. Tips - All chips are expired, or weeks away from expiration. - If there's no date on a food item, don't buy it. - Many items are from Costco / Target. But to realize the best values you have to wait for the right coupons. I've found shoes for as low at 7 bucks, jeans for 8, and countless kid's clothing for $3... - Furniture selection is not as good here. Wait for parking lot sales or 50% off at the Santee location. - It's also odd that they scan the carts as you leave. I'm assuming it's an excuse for the cashier to see if people are hiding items in their cart. read more

GTM is great if you are looking for deals. The store has a ton of different items such as shoes clothing, household items, groceries, furniture, toys, electronics and more. Prices are great!!! If you really want to make out like a bandit utilize the coupons everyday. Coupons are usually 20% - 40% off. The staff is great. It's a discount store so many items can be there one day and gone the next. Staff is good about helping you find what you are looking for. I recommend going through every isle because you never know what you're going to find. If you like to feed your pets the exact same food be aware the pet food brands change frequently. There are some decent deals, but the store is in disarray, so I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. Most of the clothes are on the wrong size hangers, so you actually have to look inside each clothing item to see what the real size is. The cashier was loud & bossy. What should have taken me no more than two minutes to check out, took much longer because she was too busy Bossing me around. And - loudly - pointing out any errors I made (I had two transactions, & she made me feel like dirt over it - she said - loudly - that I am not allowed to do that, and went on for 30 seconds on WHY - which apparently her manager told her it's not allowed, because it takes too long. Yet her scolding me took much longer than it would have, had she just freaking rang me up!). I was polite to her the whole time, and as I was walking away, she snickered at the next customer, obviously making fun of me. I have a spinal injury and I've been in severe chronic pain for 13 years, so I have depression because of it. I WAS having a good day - but I left feeling badly because I was not treated nicely to someone who I was very nice to. You might think about getting some secret shoppers to spy on your employees, so you don't lose a bunch of business. I noticed since the last time I was here, the store is not busy like it used to be. Hmmm, I wonder why? Fyi - I choose not to continue shopping here. The girl is so loud anyone can hear her, so management should have already given her a warning, apparently they don't care. I saw a sectional I liked at GTM, I went to Costco online to get the measurements and I found it cheaper going directly through Costco and I get a brand new sectional with warranty. WORSE customer service ever, I called the Lemon Grove store from the Santee store to ask a question about a recliner, and was put on hold. We arrived to the Lemon Grove store and walked up to the service desk, there were 3 lady's standing there, I asked where the incoming calls come in at and they pointed to the phone, I pointed out thats me " the flashing light" still on hold. Kind of disorganized with product placements and isle ways are impossible to get thru - especially when parents bring 2-3 kids. Okay, everyone has a right to shop and I think it's great, but you cannot get down the singular isles. I went to GTM today for a tank top. I don't usually shop here but it was recommended by one of my tennis team members. The store carries a bit of everything. The shelves were packed with merchandise. All types of food items, canned goods, snack items, cleaning supplies and auto motive stuff. In one corner of the store were furniture things: sofas, chairs, tables, lamps. It also carried a full line of active wear: tees, shorts, tanks, slacks for men, women and children. It was a lot to take in. The customer service was below average. The staff were very busy working out new arrivals and merchandising. Four registers were open so the wait in line was only a couple of minutes long. If you find something you like in this store buy it because they get different items all the time. Be prepared to search through the shelves and racks. read more

Melissa, at Customer Service, since you were less than professional and refused to offer an apology, I will turn to the one forum that warns others of poor customer service and terrible experiences... I went to GTM on 1/31/21, at around 2:00pm, to do some impulse shopping. I wanted to take a look at a couple of purses behind the counter. I waited quietly and patiently for Melissa to finish her transaction with a customer, who was purchasing some groceries. As she was helping him, Melissa and I made eye-contact, so I was very unpleasantly surprised when she finished the transaction and completely ignored me as she went around to the other side to do a return. Flabbergasted, I chased her around to the other side to let her know that she didn't even say anything to me, like, for example, " I'll be right back" ... Melissa said, " I have to do this return and then I'll be back to help you." Ok, I thought...I'll hurry back to where I was at the counter and continue to wait for her. Meanwhile, my husband had walked up to me and I explained the situation to him. He posted himself at the halfway point of the counter, where he was able to see the both of us at the same time. Several minutes later, my husband informed me that Melissa had just taken other customers... All I can think about was her lack of integrity. As I came around the corner to confront Melissa, she exclaimed "This is my priority doing returns"! Just then, the security guard intervened, because he heard me raise my voice at Melissa, as I pointedly accused her of needing a refresher course on BASIC customer service. So then, fine, I reason, if that's your priority, that's ok...just tell me that, so I can walk around and do some other shopping and not stand there, wasting my time waiting for you. After all, Melissa, remember...YOU'RE here for the customer, the customer is not here for you! GTM relies on the customer and the repeat business of the customer, for the success of the business...just ask Steinmart, Mervyn's and Sears! THANK GOODNESS, Charlie, was there to step in and show me the merchandise. He was prudent and kind, but he did try to make excuses for Melissa, by saying that it was a busy day. I understand that it can get busy, Charlie. During these crazy times, everyone is overwhelmed and busy, but there's never any reason to be rude to a customer and if you say you're going to help that one customer and come right back, then you should honor that. Melissa didn't do that. She told me those things and did the opposite. Melissa was clearly being passive aggressive. I'm not trying to psychoanalyze what's going on in Melissa's life, but something about me rubbed her the wrong way, when I politely told her that she had left me without acknowledging me and at that point, she made up her mind to be extra nice to everyone else, but me. So, I ended buying a purse...I had to pick it up from Melissa's counter. She completely ignored me (surprise, surprise). I thought it was peculiar that the Security guard had to retrieve the purse for me, but that's what has to happen if you don't have the emotional maturity to handle that level of problem-solving intervention. I looked at her and said, "Ma'am, just so you know, as a customer, I felt like you didn't communicate with me well and that's not very good customer service." Melissa side-eyed me and said, "Ok." Your Honor, the Prosecution rest... Then the Security Guard handed me my purse and he apologized for the incident....even he had the fortitude and the character to recognize that customers are everything, especially right now! I asked the Security Guard for the manager's name and Melissa's name and I exit the store thinking about how my whole day was going great, until I went to GTM! I took the time to write this, because I had hoped that someone with someone wisdom to impart, will take her aside and teach her to say something like, "...next time, just tell the customer, sorry, I'm the only one at this counter, I'll be back as soon as I can. If you have other shopping to do, you may want to check back in a few minutes". read more

So this is basically Costco returns. When you think about it the prices should be cheaper than Costco but there are about the same. Bought lamps at Costco on sale 48.99 ($10 off) this place had them for $55. So you would only save $4 off the normal Costco sale price. Electronics, home decor... all barley marked down. I'm more interested in how they get these products and what discount Costco sells them to this third party. This place has done its home work and definitely shoots for maximizing profit to unknowing Costco shoppers. Returns are a pain in the butt so I would not recommended this place. Well, I'm all about the greater good, so I figured I gotta share this place with people. GTM Discount General Stores is somewhat like a Big Lots. Now I know what you're thinking, why on earth am I getting so excited for a place that is being described similarly to a Big Lots. Well here's the deal- this place has great deals on just about everything- electronics, houseware, furniture, and CLOTHING. For real, they got the hook up on clothing. My wife and I got Lucky Brand Jeans for $20, Seven (brand) Jeans for $50, and Black Diamond (mountain gear) jackets for $15!! Definitely a great place for a bargain hunter, we have yet to go to this place and not leave with an amazing deal. They don't have common items in stock, they just have trucks drop stuff off weekly, so each week is a new adventure. Plus they have coupons on their website where you can take an additional 30-50% off selected items. This place beats outlet prices! (Gosh, I feel like a car salesman all of a sudden:-P). My mother loves this store, why? Because you can always find great bargain deals here. Yesterday, she bought about 100 water bottles for a mere $5.40!! Usually you buy a 24 pack for $4-5 at a regular store. Basically you can get a water bottle here 8 cents each! Definitely a steal for people who like to live off of water bottles. Lol. They also have good quality men's clothing here as well for a fraction of the price. I bought a pair of men's kirkland brand pants for $3!! And a set of 3 Puma brand boxer briefs for $15. And I remember that i've bought revlon hair straighteners here in the past for like $10-$12. Basically, they always have discount items here, some name brands, some not. But guarantee that you will find something that you will need or want. The only thing I don't like about this place is that its really cramped and some areas are messy.
