Hunan food is also known for its pickled vegetables, a necessity shaped by the region's humidity, which makes food preservation difficult. This restaurant pickles its own vegetables and uses them throughout its dishes. The pickled radishes in the chicken gizzards are sublime. The dish arrived with strong guoqi, that hot steaming air resulting from high temperature pan-frying and it was just salty enough to combine with rice. The same goes for the fermented chilies served with the steamed fish. Now the negatives: the place looks like an old Chinese restaurant that hasn't been renovated since the 1980s. That adds a certain charm, I suppose, but it can also make it harder to fully feel like you're having a "nice dining experience." In addition, they only accept certain types of credit/debit cards, and my Discover card incurs a 2% surcharge. The owner was kind enough not to charge me this time, but it still makes me hesitate about returning. That said, the service is superb, with a real family-run warmth.
