My husband, my mother and I visited Gullah and Grooves on a trip to Charleston, SC. We so enjoyed the food, the service and the ambiance of the restaurant. My husband spoke all evening about how much he enjoyed his oxtails. They don't have a dessert menu. I hope that changes in the future because after a great meal, you sometime want something sweet. read more

This place has a very nice, intimate vibe to it, with booths, long bar, and individual table seating. They have a band on most nights I believe, which is nice for a date night, girls night, etc. the band was awesome and it's for this reason they received 2 stars instead of 1. Now let's get into my experience. My boyfriend made a $50 deposit required-reservation for us on Valentine's Day. It was for 830p and we were immediately greeted and seated by the friendly lady at the front door. Sat for about 45 mins... no service, no water, nothing. Finally, our server comes (very sweet young lady). She seemed a bit flustered, most likely because they had been very busy for the holiday. Totally understandable. When she arrived, after ample time to decide, we ordered everything -- appetizers, entrées, and drinks. All items came out very randomly. About 20 minutes after ordering, we were informed that we couldn't receive one of our appetizer choices because they were out. 20 minutes after that, one entree arrived (& finally got water from a passing table busser); 15 mins later the second followed. We also ordered a third entrée just to try and that came with the second. 2.5hours later is when everything had arrived. Crabcakes 10/10 -- crab to other ingredient ratio was proportionate Shrimp pasta 10/10 -- shrimp perfectly blackened Oxtails 4/10 -- not tender Collards 0/10 -- dry and bland (how do you serve dry collards?) Yams 0/10 -- tasted like they were canned Fish 1/10 -- huge piece, but the breading tasted only like flour There's a 2hr time limit for tables. I was pleased to see that they didn't enforce this because we definitely hit the 2hr mark just waiting for everything we ordered. The most annoying part of our experience was that management (assuming because they walked around a good bit) didn't address the issues and were oblivious to the fact that things weren't running smoothly. One employee walked around with blinking lights similar to what bottle girls in a club do, while servers/kitchen staff clearly needed some help and some patrons were dissatisfied. I also went back a separate time and got the shrimp pasta. Although still edible, it was greasy and the shrimp wasn't cooked the same. My friend said the oxtails were tender. Good food choices and prices for Happy Hour. Wings were on point, 10 for $10. Friend had their Oyster Rockefeller, $3 each, minimum of 5 oysters. They also have $10 Fish & Fries, that a few people in our party had and enjoyed. House cocktail and wines on happy hour as well. Courtney was our server on the patio, and gave great service. We decided to drive down to Charleston for the weekend. We were there Mother's Day weekend. Upon check out, the hotel front desk recommended this restaurant before we headed home. We got there around opening. It was pretty empty but said they had a full day of reservations and were able to accommodate us in their outside area. That was fine. It was warm but we made it work. The inside was beautiful though. Very nice decor and seating arrangement with band space upfront. Eventually they did have live music. You couldn't hear from outside but they did have separate music playing. There was a set menu for the day. I was a little disappointed when I couldn't add on eggs. What's a brunch menu without EGGS?! Lol. Seriously. However, our food was good. I got the fish and grits. We've ordered mimosas as well. Gratuity was already added to your bill. I don't care for that. Allow me to tip based on service - isn't that how tipping cultured is structured? My other issue is no toilet paper in the women's bathroom. I mentioned to two people and waited and waited. I ended up getting my own and no one ever restocked it while we were there... overall, it was a decent experience. read more

I've heard the hype and wanted to try so after one of my good girlfriends invited me and eight other ladies out for Galentine's Day; I was on board. Upon entering, there were several people waiting to be seated, making it a little awkward to get inside. Thankfully, sis had made a reservation so our large table was right up front as soon as you walked inside. We were close to the stage but we were crammed and seating was tight. The band on Friday was phenomenal! The decor was nice and inviting; giving "grown and sexy". Apparently there are several sections within the restaurant. There's a large bar with seating as well. I'd checked the menu before and noted that there were no mentions of allergens like most menus provide and knew that they may be a concern for me due to my gluten-allergy. I ordered what I'd hope was the "safest" for me: seafood platter with everything grilled (never received my oysters) and sides of collards and yams. My food came out before the other ladies appetizers. The seafood was salty and overcooked, the yams tasted straight from the can, and my collards were cold. There is a 2 hour reservation period but several of the women didn't receive their food until it was well time for us to leave. Their food arrived cold with some items coming out piece by piece. I'm not sure if their food was just forgotten or they need more kitchen assistance. I ordered a mock tail Shirley Temple and waited for it for 35/40 minutes and it was still wrong when I did get it. I ordered it because the water we were served was horrible. I'm not sure how one could mess up water but our table complained that it was "nasty". The server who was pleasant, said that she would speak to them about lowering the price.. I was given a whooping 10% off of the drink which itself was $12. The food is too overpriced to taste how it does. Every woman complained about their food the consensus that I gathered was to "come for the drinks (alcoholic) and the music". I stepped away to use the ladies room only to see upon returning to the table the owner was there and they were having the ladies get up so they could seat another party. There had already been several issues that night with seating another large party celebrating a birthday. FYI there is an 18% gratuity already attached to your bill. I enjoyed Gullah and Groove Restaurant. Gullah and Groove is low country comfort (soul) food restaurant we enjoyed. I ordered the comfort plate with three fried chicken wings, collard greens on a bed of rice, cornbread with macaroni and cheese. The three fried whole chicken wings were crispy and delicious. The collard greens and macaroni and cheese were savory. The cornbread was the right touch. My friend had the lobster pasta with white sauce and ample amount of lobster. We cleaned our plates. The restaurant is open, modern design. The ambiance is right, nice lighting, booth, and tables. Larger tables and outdoor seating is available. There is live music Thursday through Saturday. No music on the night we visited. Service was good. Jasmine, our server was attentive without being overbearing. We enjoyed her work. The restaurant is not easy to see at night, no neon sign. It is next door to Ashley Furniture in the Centerpointe Shopping and Restaurant strip. I'll be back. read more

Let's start with the ambiance really nice and such a vibe lights dimmed live band rocking the place hitting us with the 90's music. The service was welcoming and the server was very attentive. The food was okay I ordered salmon bites as an appetizer they taste plain. I ordered the oyster po boy as my entree it was definitely too salty and the bread was kind of firm. It wasn't nasty but I wouldn't order it again. My sandwich came out way before my fries. My margarita was a little on the sweet side like too much mixer. But all in all the place is nice. I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience at Gullah & Grooves was incredibly disappointing and, more importantly, concerning. We were referred to the restaurant by the front desk staff at our hotel and decided to give it a try. Upon arriving for our first visit, we were initially denied service because we were accompanied by our trained service animal. After explaining the situation, we were eventually allowed to dine--but only on the patio. Normally that wouldn't be an issue, except there was an extreme heat advisory with temperatures around 98°F. We chose to stay because we were hungry and it was simply too hot to continue searching for another restaurant. Unfortunately, our second visit was even worse. We walked to the restaurant during severe thunderstorms and lightning, only to be told by the host that we could not be accommodated because of our service animal. She identified herself as the manager, which later turned out to be untrue. After we had already been turned away, we were called back and asked whether we had paperwork for our service animal--a request that should never have been made, as businesses are not permitted to require documentation for a service animal under the law. We were then seated inside the dining room. After waiting approximately 15 minutes, the actual manager approached us and informed us that if we wanted to receive service, we would have to move back outside to the already soaked patio. After being caught in a thunderstorm, drenched from the walk, and already seated indoors, asking customers with a legitimate service animal to return to a wet outdoor patio was both unreasonable and disrespectful. This experience wasn't just poor customer service--it reflected a troubling lack of understanding of the rights of individuals accompanied by service animals. Staff members appeared unfamiliar with basic ADA requirements, communication was inconsistent, and we were treated as though our presence was an inconvenience rather than welcomed guests. I sincerely hope the restaurant invests in proper ADA training for its staff and management so that future guests with disabilities are treated with dignity, respect, and in accordance with the law. No one should have to repeatedly justify the presence of a service animal simply to enjoy a meal. read more

Gullah & Grooves was a great experience from the moment we walked in. The first thing that catches your attention is the decor and overall aesthetic of the space. The atmosphere has a very polished, upscale feel to it, while still being warm and welcoming. It definitely gives a mature 30-and-over vibe where people can relax, enjoy good music, great drinks, and good company. I went there with family that I hadn't seen in a long time, and it turned out to be the perfect place to reconnect and enjoy the evening together. The hospitality manager was extremely cool and respectful, and even took the time to snap some pictures for us, which made the experience feel even more welcoming and personal. From what I saw around the room, everyone's food looked absolutely amazing, and the drinks were crafted perfectly. My glass of Chardonnay was hitting just right. The energy in the place was smooth, grown, and just an overall good vibe. The only small suggestion I would make is having a clearer sign outside so it's easier to spot when you're looking for it. We hesitated at the idea of going to Gullah and Grooves because we had an issue with a reservation just a month prior. However, we tried again and the hostess was accommodating and gave us a two top. The atmosphere was beautiful and welcoming. The band provided good entertainment. Our server was nice and attentive. We ordered the Gullah rice and fish. When the rice came out, it did not have okra or shrimp as advertised, the bacon was raw and the sausage didn't have a hint of a sear. When we informed the server, he was advised by the manager that they didn't have the shrimp or okra to put in the rice and they can provide a 10% discount. We rejected and asked to order something different because we did not want sausage rice. The server then advised that we could order something different but it would have to be ordered to go as they have a 9:00 reservation for our table as though it's our fault they didn't have or advise us of the lack of items for their Gullah rice. Management needs a better training because that was not the professional way to handle the situation. We just paid for appetizers, drinks and left. This place has potential but you can't just offer one menu item and just omit things because you ran out. Is it really Gullah rice when it only has raw bacon and sausage? If I wanted pork fried rice I would have went to a different restaurant. read more

Chair slides and doesn't get close to the table. Limited menu. Our server failed to give us our condiments, napkins and plastic ware. After serving other tables multiple times, she came by check on us and realized she forgot about us and by this time our food is cold. Server was nonchalant. She only had 3 tables. Beautiful restaurant with elegant décor and a great atmosphere. My first impression walking in was very positive. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the setting--I waited about 10 minutes at the hostess stand before being greeted or seated. I was eventually seated at the bar, where the bar attendant was extremely nice and welcoming. While sitting there, I observed the staff and felt that some additional training and coordination could improve the overall service experience. The food portions were generous and well presented. The mac & cheese and cornbread were excellent (5 stars), and the greens were decent, but the fried fish and salmon were very salty. A few other customers mentioned the same issue. I should have known to stay away. First I attempted to make a reservation but you cannot do that online, you have to text a number. I text the number with all of my information. After over 2 days there was no response. Since I was in the area I stopped in and was given another number to text. Using that number I got my reservation. Mind you someone finally responded from the original number a day or 2 later (so total of about 5 days). Fast forward to today. Hostess was very nice and the server was pleasant. We ordered and then the food came. Two people ordered the Big Blue Breakfast (nothing big about it). The breakfast consisted of small portions of eggs, bacon and grits. My husband asked about the fact that he automatically received scrambled eggs. Kaitlin (our server) responded "you have to specify". I advised her that if there is an option she should have asked "how would you like your eggs prepared?" like every other establishment that serves eggs. The order for chicken and waffles came with overcooked boxed Egg'o Belgian waffles (sold by the box for $5.29) and 3 wings that looked like they used to belong to finches. When the bill came we noticed that the items on the bill had a different price than what was reflected online (no biggie, prices change) and each item on the bill had an additional charge added to it $14 is $14.42, $20 is $20.60; etc.). When we questioned the server she said she would send over her manager, enter Henry stage right. He confirmed that prices online are not up to date, no problem. However he never explained to additional charges for each item. It was not the 18% for orders over $25 or the 18% for parties over 6 because that was added at the bottom with the 6% sales tax. As a Courtesy he did say that the server would adjust the Big Blue to the online price of $10. However, when she returned she had not made the indicated adjustment, she adjusted the $1.02 that was added to the items. Taking out a calculator and using the "interweb" we determined that the additional charge was Hospitality tax ...just say that, "you ain't gotta lie Craig"? I am all for patronizing a new business and paying good money for good food and good service; and helping them grow, but please don't treat my dollars and my business like they don't matter. We ordered oyster rockefellar 0/10 when my main course came out the rice was cold I ordered the Gullah rice and fish they put the whole plate I the microwave and brought it back out instead of giving fresh rice... how I know ? because the lemon garnish on the fish was hot. Unfortunately, my first experience at Gullah & Grooves was not as pleasant as some. After seeing an advertisement on social media, I decided to check them out. When we were seated, we were told you could only order from one portion of the menu between certain hours, and there was no drink menu. The food that I ordered was not pleasurable to me. I ordered the oxtail and grits, and it was very sweet. I personally do not like my oxtail sweet. They were a good size but also had a lot of fat on them. I also ordered an 8-piece chicken wings appetizer that came after my entree. The chicken wings were so small. They were the size of my pinky finger. I didn't even know they made chicken wings that small. To top it off, I'm not a big drinker; the last time I had a drink was about 6 months ago, so my tolerance was way down. I ordered a lemon drop, Long Island Iced Tea, and a margarita. Two of the drinks were top shelf. I never got a buzz. Smdh! Be prepared to pay extra fees as well. I guess for over $200, I expected better. I always love to support, but unfortunately, not this place. read more
