One of my new favorite things is casually going to Hall's for a late lunch or early dinner. Let me tell you why it's so great. First off, it's not busy so you can easily walk in without a reservation. Next is that you get to experience more of the fun items on the menu that you don't order when you go to a big dinner. And lastly, I can spend fifty bucks on an amazing meal instead of $300. I'm still going to plan fancy dinners there for wonderful steaks, sides, and wine, but this casual early dinner is an overlooked option. This time around we had the wedge salad which they split on to two plates for us making it easy to share. I loved the whole strip of crispy bacon on top too. We also tried the stuffed mushrooms and the steak nachos. The stuffed mushrooms were fine, but not a favorite item so I may not get them again. The star of the show were the nachos! They didn't skimp on any of the ingredients and had a big scoop of guac and sour cream on the plus there was probably a whole steak cut up and spread throughout. The nachos are a must have. Next time I need to try the burger or the hot dog and report back. read more

Overall, it was good but I would *not* say great. Some items were better than others... I came here with my husband and parents. We started with steak tartare and oysters rockefeller. The tartare was excellent! The oysters had a strange taste that I was not a fan of. However, I do want to mention my dirty martini was phenomenal!! For my entree, I ordered the 8oz filet mignon, medium-rare. As soon as the server put the plate in front of me, they whipped out a flashlight, shined it on my plate and asked me to cut into the middle of the steak to ensure it was cooked correctly. This bothered me for multiple reasons: 1.) for a restaurant of this caliber, I would expect the chef to know if my steak is cooked correctly and 2.) I like to cut into my steak at the end not the middle. It was cooked correctly but it was not as juicy/flavorful as I hoped it would be. The sides for our table were the most impressive part of my meal; perfect mashed potatoes and probably one of the best creamed spinaches I've ever had! Oddly enough, it was more crunchy than creamy but somehow it worked and tasted delicious. I've had both better and worse steakhouse experiences but at this price point, I expected just a tad bit better. Hall's Chophouse - Summerville We dined at **Hall's Chophouse** and once again enjoyed a wonderful evening overall. We sat on the patio, which is always beautiful and such a great atmosphere, especially when the weather cooperates. Service was excellent from start to finish--attentive, professional, and genuinely friendly. Food-wise, everything was very good. Highlights included the dry-aged ribeye, bacon steak, and a grass-fed filet. We also got to try a special that night: **homemade cavatelli pasta in a truffle sauce**, which was absolutely delicious and a standout dish. Cocktails were solid as well--strong pours (the espresso martini definitely does not disappoint). There were a couple of minor issues worth noting. The scallops were just a tad overcooked--not bad, but noticeable at this level. Also, I ordered my lobster Oscar style, but the sauce was mistakenly placed on the filet instead. When I mentioned it, the staff was immediately willing to fix the error. I chose to just scoop the sauce over myself, but the willingness to correct it mattered just as much as the mistake itself and was very much appreciated. One thing Hall's does that I genuinely love is their birthday treatment. They automatically bring out complimentary champagne and dessert, which is a very kind gesture. The dessert is vanilla ice cream served with three types of cookies--chocolate chip, sugar, and double chocolate--with a candle. That said, I do have a small suggestion: sometimes guests already have a drink in hand, don't drink alcohol, or can't eat ice cream or sweets (dietary restrictions, diabetes, etc.). While the gesture is thoughtful, it might be even better to ask at the beginning whether guests would prefer a glass of champagne *or* a dessert, or let them choose a dessert from the menu. Asking upfront would make the experience feel more personalized and avoid any awkward pressure. It's also worth noting that Hall's is not pet friendly, even on the patio. However, I have seen that they do support certain pet shelters and animal-related causes, which I really appreciate--it's always nice to see businesses give back to the community in that way. My only real disappointment wasn't with the food or service in-house, but with communication outside the restaurant. I had emailed corporate some time ago and never received a response, which was surprising--especially as regulars, you expect the same high level of service across the board. I mentioned this to our server, who kindly took down my email again, but unfortunately, even a few days later, I still haven't heard back. That said, the food was delicious, the service on-site was top notch, and the patio experience remains one of the best in the area. I ordered an omelette with grits. The omelette and grits came out so salty that we had to send the omelette back. There were multiple dogs inside of the establishment, which was strange for a nicer restaurant such as Halls. This is the third time we have been and honestly will be the last. We love this restaurant, but this last time we went to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday and we weren't even served our food for over one hour. However, they were accommodating and our server was great. I got the Kansas City bone in stake with an Oscars style softshell crab. The steak was perfectly cooked, however the softshell crab was not fried all the way through and was still juicy in the middle. My wife's potatoes were way overcooked as well. All in all about an hour and 20 minutes for us to receive our main course, but it was busy for a Wednesday due to a convention in town. read more

Tried Halls Nexton for the first time in several years. Ate at the bar, off of the bar menu. Nice ambience, and a live band. I had the salmon salad. The salmon was amazing but the salad was loaded with onions. Hubby had the steak and truffle fries, which was outstanding. Jumbo baked potato was indeed jumbo sized and it was perfectly cooked. I love to eat the skin and sometimes restaurants burn the bottom but this was perfect. I read mixed reviews of Halls Summerville location and I can emphatically say go! Whatever bumps in service or staff there may have been in the past are gone. I've had the good fortune to sample top steak houses in DC, Chicago, Kansas City, Vegas, Dallas, Tokyo, Madrid, and Paris. Halls is among the best. From the moment we walked in we were greeted appreciatively by the manager, and got to meet the owner as he introduced himself mid meal to thank us for coming. Halls delivers a level of dining service that is top tier; everyone was professional, attentive, and appropriately engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed Halls' fine dining experience, including a well set linen table with salad and dinner forks, and butter and dinner knives. Our table was completely reset after our appetizer course, with new silverware and dishes laid for dinner. All of this was done without undue fussiness, it was just the Halls way. But that's just the dining framework. The food was the superlative star. Our waitress knowledgeably explained the Halls steak offerings, the cuts, treatments, and sourcing. We weren't novices, yet picked up new facts about the cuts and treatments that helped us make our choices. You may know that Wagyu beef is very expensive, but at Halls you may buy by the ounce. We did, so the 3 of us shared 3 oz as an appetizer, in addition to fried green tomatoes. This was an affordable way for us to sample this pinnacle steak, and we were well rewarded. I've had fried green tomatoes at a score of restaurants, and Halls' were the best I've ever had. They are sliced thinly, breaded lightly, and seasoned just perfectly. That's enough, but they come topped with a crab, shrimp, and bacon succotash that is fresh, delicious, and the perfect complement to the tomatoes. We chose dry-aged ribeye and tomahawk steaks, and they were like nothing we've had before, absolutely fantastic. You have to experience for yourself. Halls isn't a corporate chain, nor the cheapest dinner out. It is a fair value for their meticulously delivered experience and their excellence in sourcing the very best ingredients and preparing them with passion and precision. We had raw oysters to start, which were clean, no sand, meaty & delicious. From there we all went in differed ways to sooth our hungry palates! A crab cake, a pork chop main, French onion soup salad their main & scallops. My scallops were over risotto, I was too full that I could hardly eat all the scallops, did taste risotto, was yummy . The soup got finished. We ended up with a pork chop in a doggy bag. The crab cake was also finished. Great place to go & lunch time, you can order off of the dinner menu also and share family style. I've been to this location and few times and it's good but doesn't really reach the level of halls downtown chuck. The service is good but not great. The servers and their assistants are attentive and do a solid job. The thing that kind of annoys me is they never cook my steak right. When it comes out the server does have you cut into the steak to ensure it is cooked to your liking. I always say it's fine even though it never is just because I don't want to send it back and delay me smashing any more. When you pay what you do for premium cuts at halls, you shouldn't cut into a steak and see anything other than what you asked for. I'll keep coming back for meals when someone else is paying or on special occasions, because it is a good steak house, but it just isn't as good as downtown. read more

Halls has been bookmarked since I moved here a year ago. I was finally able to convince my friend to join me for a later dinner in celebration of completing my first bodybuilding show of the season. Take that information to mean I was eating roughly the same foods for 5 months so my tastebuds were a bit more sensitive. Let me start off with the ambiance. Lovely, cozy, romantic, and lively with jazz music playing downstairs. Dark woods and dim lighting made it feel both upscale and slightly retro/speakeasy. We were greeted immediately and complimented on our attire (we were both wearing white, somewhat simple dresses). We did have reservations at 8pm, but were seated about 10 minutes past, which we didn't initially notice as we were chatting. We were escorted upstairs and offered either the elevator or stairs. It looked like there was a private party in a separate room upstairs. The two of us were seated in a large semi-circular booth which was comfortable. We were offered water once throughout our visit. The lighting may have been a little too dark as even the 20 year old mentioned she couldn't quite read the menu haha. Our server Adam was polite and attentive. We were offered bread and butter which we accepted. I believe it was sourdough? Nothing special about either the bread or butter. I had been craving a simple steak and baked potato so that's exactly what I ordered - the grass fed filet and loaded baked potato. My friend ordered the same. Our steaks were cooked a perfect medium rare with no accompaniments. It shined all on its own. The potato was huge, which we were informed of, but made for perfect leftovers for a hash in the morning. The potato was delicious with the exception of a huge amount of sour cream which nearly rivaled the size of the potato. I'm going to attempt to visit Halls again, but during lunch and try different items. read more

My girlfriend and I visited Halls Chophouse last Friday for dinner, and as usual, it was a great experience. One of the things I truly love about this restaurant is how the managers always take the time to visit the tables it adds a personal touch and makes you feel valued as a guest. We ordered the wedge salad with steak, and while the salad was flavorful, the steak was tough not the best cut we've had there. If you're going with a friend, I'd actually recommend ordering a ribeye and sharing it, then adding it to your salads. That would've been a better value and overall dining experience. It would be great if the staff suggested creative options like that to help guests make the most of their meal. I'm a regular at Halls usually once a month and I still highly recommend it for the consistent service, atmosphere, and overall quality. Found myself in the Summerville neighborhood without a plan. Being very familiar with Halls in Charleston it seemed like a great idea. We had no reservation so decided to take a table in the bar area. The staff was so helpful and friendly while we figured out what made sense after lunch but before dinner. We started with a glass of wine, which was delicious. We decided to share the wedge salad and it came out of the kitchen split onto two plates for us to share easily. The bacon was so perfect and cooked just right. We decided to share the nachos and they were fantastic. They were covered with lots of fresh veggies and plenty of cheese and a generous portion of guacamole and sour cream. But the star of the dish was the generous chunks of tender steak throughout the pile of chips. It seemed like there was an entire steak tossed into the nachos. It was a hardy and delicious meal. We also ordered some stuffed mushrooms which were very good. I'll be sure to put Hall's Chophouse near home on my radar and come back to Summerville location when I'm close by. Halls Chophouse in Nexton is absolutely one of my most favorite places to go for any occasion. The staff greets you right as you walk in and take serious consideration to what your reason for being there is whether it's something more casual or something really special. I took my sister out for her birthday and they served us a glass of champagne and allowed her to pick any dessert. She wanted after our meal. We got the chocolate cake. She had the filet mignon strip steak with baked mac & cheese, and I had the same but with truffle fries. My favorite drink there is the Bill's Bramble and she had a spicy martini. The experience was absolutely wonderful. There was no rush and they really took care of every little thing that we wanted and needed. This place is always a 10 out of 10 for me ! Next the lobster mac and cheese skillet and soup. Both came out cold. Sent back the mac and it came out again lukewarm at best. Turkey was good but sides were average at best, Desserts made no sense. We asked the waiter how the apple pie was and he said he heard it was good. How he has not tried it is beyond me. But ... Apple pie was mushy, caramel cake tasted frozen, pumpkin pie was watery and cheesecake was good. Empty plates piled high for 20 minutes before they were taken away. WHAT a Disappointment! Go to Marble and Fin. It's a 10, this place is a 3. Clearly expanded too quick and has no quality control. The owners would die if they knew how bad this location is run. Sooo average. We called and made last minute reservations for Thanksgiving -- literally day-of!! We hurried over and were very happy with everything that afternoon. It was all of the regular menu along with turkey and sides specials. None of us are turkey fans so we were glad for the steaks and other menu offerings. Im pescatarian and my fiancée has celiacs so we always have restrictions. Our server, Mackenzie, was amazing. She gave us time to look everything over and brought the steak board out to explain the options. Drinks, apps and meals were served timely and we were not rushed. Set up dinner reservations for a 615 on a Saturday evening. Arrived about 15 minutes early and we were quickly seated. We had requested seating outside in the patio area. It was beautiful and a bit quieter than the inside which was what we were hoping for. Service was excellent from the beginning with drink specials read to us and immediate orders. I took advantage of the pumpkin spice in house special. It was excellent. We started with the calamari and it was fresh and fantastic. We moved on to salads - I had the chopped salad with goat cheese, pecans and vinaigrette. Reminds me of a salad I used to get back in Philadelphia regularly that I dream of. So good. Finished with the wet ribeye and lobster Mac and cheese. So great. Only thing I would change is the temperature of the Mac and cheese. I like it piping hot and it was barely warm. When you set a reservation you expect to get the table you reserved at the time of your reservation to he seated and served. I went there yesterday evening after making my request over a week prior. After arriving we were told we didn't order that special table and they were going to seated in a closed up room. I said no, I want my table I requested a week ago. The blonde hair hostess told me I was mistaken. Number one Im not a liar number two this hostess said the table we wanted won't have a server ready for 30 min. I told her we will wait for our table. She told us to wait at the bar. I looked over at the bar and it was packed. We found a couple of seats to sit in. After 45 min, we just left. I won't be going there again. The hostess was a snob and basically called me a liar. The food is sub-par and not worth all the waiting you have to do for your food or the special table you requested a week in advance. This place has just gone down hill fast. read more

We took a trip to Charleston to celebrate our 5th anniversary and Halls was definitely on the list. We have been to Halls in different cities - Greenville, Nashville....but the Charleston location is the best one - it has a tradition to it, and the service is just a step above the others (not that the others are lacking. Here are a few adjectives to describe Halls right off the top: Traditional, Lively, Clubby, Extravagant, Comfortable, Perfect. No matter how busy, and it's busy - you enter in a bar, with live music going on, and you are greeted right away, warmly, like a friend is greeted. They asked if we were celebrating and we said we were. We were led to our table. Every room is club-like, and busy, there are no empty tables and it can get a bit loud, not crazy loud, but lively loud. To our left was a big table of 10 guys celebrating something and behind us were a few ladies celebrating....both with energy. Our server Scott made us feel welcome and the manager stopped by with champagne to celebrate. Dinner was multi course with cocktails. We skipped wine as we were driving a bit to get back home...but the wine list is comprehensive. The cocktails were perfect. Appetizers were oysters, oysters Rockefeller and tuna tartare - all prepared expertly. Salads followed - both large and you can split one easily. Steaks were next - and they were as good as it gets. We got wet aged strip and filet. We have been to nice steakhouses everywhere, This is in the top 2.....they know how to cook a steak perfectly. It was so good and flavorful. We added lobster. Sides are huge- potatoes and chanterelles ......both good - at this point we were so full we only had a couple bites......Scott heard us talking about the corn side and brought us a taste - (We didn't ask) - and that was the best side of all. That was so nice and thoughtful. We did have chocolate cake and ice cream - which was very good.....didn't need to, but had to.....and then we dragged ourselves out of there. Look, it's not a low cost place, we left $500 later - but we can honestly say we knew it is high price point ahead of time and we knew it would be worth every penny. We loved celebrating there - it's just so special and the Hall family and their team are special people who know what they are doing and love what they do. We can't wait to return. read more

Went to Halls for Brunch today. It was an okay experience. Service from Jenna was great. To start off with I had a Bloody Mary and it was really good. Appetizer was the fried green tomatoes and it was tasty with the shrimp and bacon topping. For lunch I ordered the Prime Rib sandwich and Parmesan fries. The fries were good but the sandwich was just okay. I think they gave me a poor cut of meat. It was chewy and inedible. So disappointing. May try dinner one day but for the price, I don't want to chance it with another poor cut again. So I will wait for a while. Waitress and the Valet were great. This is third time eating at the Summerville location and unfortunately, it keeps getting progressively worse. My wife and I went there for our 45 Wedding Anniversary and we were hoping for an experience commiserate with this special occasion. Unfortunately, what we got was bad, torturously slow service, mediocre food and no draft beer, even though it's on the menu. For appetizers we ordered the bacon and Caesar salad. The bacon was a fatty mess and we should have sent it back. The Caesar salad, while having a great presentation, was too much dressing and was soggy and tasteless. In fact, sans the presentation, you can get a better Caesar salad at a myriad of other restaurants for a fraction of the cost. At this juncture the service disappeared and dinner became a thankless marathon of disappointment. When we finally received our dinner my $78 steak was dry, tasteless and a huge disappointment at this price point. My wife's scallops were very good and was the highlight of this disappointing experience. For dessert we ordered the custard cheesecake which took an hour to arrive. You would think that they would have decorated the cake to recognize our anniversary but that was not the case. I will say that the cheesecake was a freebie for our anniversary, however it wasn't worth the wait. I don't think we will be back. Get your downtown Charleston Hall's fix in Nexton! They made the restaurant look almost identical too! I sat at the bar for lunch and just did a quick cheeseburger. It came quickly and the bartender was nice and helpful. I had one of the local draft beers, but they mostly limited as they are mostly a cocktail or liquor spot. They did have a 3 course lunch special, but seemed a little aggressive amount of food for lunch. I figure most folks would split it. Noticeably an older crowd being near Nexton and Summerville. A big disappointment in this years menu on New Year's Day, we went last year and had a brunch menu. So we decided to go again this year, but there was no brunch menu. We had to order off the regular menu, which you know has some pretty expensive items for an early lunch. So what we had was ok at best, one of us had to return there sandwich because it couldn't be chewed. Please bring back the brunch menu or we will find a place who is open on New Year's Day and serves brunch. read more

Honestly a very good experience and very good service. I had the New York strip which was cooked perfectly but the sides could've been better. In my opinion probably slight lack of seasoning but nothing to worry about. It could just be personal preference. The desserts are great, the waiter did have a hilarious mix up and gave me ice cream instead of the crème brulee I ordered which ended up with me waiting for like 15 minutes to see if he was for real or not. Either way a solid experience, you can tell they really put effort into making you feel like you're truly somewhere special. read more
