Stopped in the cafe here for lunch today. My aussie buddy John wanted to check this place out because it was owned by an aussie and had some aussie-ish type food items. I had the Virginia Ham Sandwich (brie, rocket & aussie wild honey mustard on baguette), a Lamington (sponge cake dipped in premium chocolate & rolled in coconut), and a Cappuccino. The sponge cake in the in Lamington was a little to dense for me. The rest of the food was good. I was able to try the Organic Spaghetti w/ chicken, pesto, and sundried tomatoes daily special. Also the Leek & Asparagus Soup. Both were good also. We talked to the owner for a while. He seemed like a super nice guy. He plans to bring on the aussie style meat pies and sausage rolls too. Maybe also start Sunday afternoon BBQ's on the patio events. read more

The space is beautiful, the gifts items in the store are adorable. I came here for lunch this weekend and had the Veggie Sandwich, hold the cheese and it was delicious. The bread had that criss cross toasty effect and was served with an unexpected and delightful mixed green salad. The dressing was this mustard vinaigrette that was tastee delicious. I also ordered a small orange juice and it was tiny, so if you want a small juice order the large. If you want a sip of juice order the small. If I happened to be hungry and in the hood, I'd do it all over again. read more

Being an Aussie, I was really excited to try this place, as it's so close to my work too. Food is expensive for what it is - $8 for avocado toast? I could make it for less than $2 myself. What I was really excited to try was the meat pie. They're hard to come by in LA. I was pretty disappointed in it, as it did not taste like an Aussie-style meat pie. More like an English one, with ground beef (this would be steak in Australia) and carrots in it. It has a great ambiance though and was really busy when I went in for lunch. The little store connected to it has cute homewares, jewelry and knick-knacks. Nice outdoor seating area out the front. Not sure if I'll be rushing back anytime soon. read more

Gum Tree is a cute little cafe with a nice store attached to it. I love the service and the food is good. I've had the butternut squash soup and I didn't like it, but not because it wasn't good...simply because I don't think I like butternut squash. I've had the vegan chili and a green soup that's zucchini something and they're both amazing. The girls at the front are really sweet and friendly. They have little snacks at the counter including TIM TAMS! Yummy in my tummy. All in all, the cafe is cute and their soups and service are great. I just had the chicken pesto sandwich once and it didn't blow me away. I would love to keep trying more. read more

I've been here a couple of times since my friends live down the street. Very cute cafe with patio seating, friendly service and TIM TAMS. Their menu is pretty standard cafe items, with a few Australian dishes mixed in. Quite a few veg options and they also carry almond milk, which is awesome because I prefer that to soy. The only bad part is that it's a only a few blocks from the pier so parking will be difficult. read more

What a cute, little cafe! I have been meaning to go here forever since I literally walk by this place on the way to the beach for years. My girlfriend and I were wanting to go to someplace different and here we came! Once you go upstairs, you go to the left and inside is where you order your food. Above the counter they have the menu on a chalkboard for the day. You have a choice of sitting inside the tiny cafe or outside. Since this is a tiny cafe, do not expect big portions. The menu is somewhat limited but worth the price. I decided to for the South Indian Chicken with summer greens, roma tomato & ginger mayo on ciabatta. The sandwich came with a side of fresh salad. my girlfriend ordered Brie and apricot preserves on baguette. Since it was a nice day out we took our food to the beach. I love love loved my food! My sandwich was great with not too much strong of a curry flavor. My salad was very fresh and the dressing that came with it was amazing and have no idea what it was lol. The brie and apricot sandwich was even better than mine! The brie was melted with a good amount of honey. I never knew apricot went so well with brie! On the menu they claim everything is locally sourced and organic which is a huge thumbs up for me. read more

How frustrating the constant and never ending search for green merchandise in our local stores. Many shops are carrying at least a couple eco-friendly products, but who has time to strip search the product labels of every item we pick up? As much as I love supporting my local economy, I find myself shopping online for most of my eco-conscious gifts and needs. It is much easier to find what I need with the help of those online directories. So when I heard a shop dedicated to supporting local merchants and green products was opening just a mere few miles from my home, the giddiness overtook me. I was soon telling my friends, neighbors, doctors and yoga instructors. Everyone had to know about this! Yes, Gum Tree was the sweet refreshment I had been waiting for in my local shopping experience. On Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach, in a beautiful craftsman style beach house, Gum Tree is half eco gift shop and half organic cafe. The shop proves to all those weary of the "brown bag" eco product, that environmentally friendly can be as easy on the eyes as it is on the earth. Chic, sophisticated and with all the freshness of the near by sea air, you'll be able to shop for home, baby, and of course yourself. And once you've exhausted yourself, and possibly your pocket book (if you failed to resist the urge to buy everything!) then you can cruise just steps to the adjoining cafe and grab a bite. Gum Tree opened this weekend. I checked it out and it is very cool! I think they will be like a good wine, and just get better with age! read more

I come here a couple times a month and absolutely love it. The food, beautiful atmosphere (pleasing homey decor inside and airy patio outside), and charming service make it a go to for locals! And obviously, shopping at their store next door or nearby kids store are a "must" as well! I recommend doing so with a delicious coffee and a s'muffin! If I were on death row, I might request a sea salt caramel s'muffin and a coffee from here! AVOCADO TOAST: this cafe is adorable! The Avocado Toast was really good. It was pricy and I kept thinking this is something I could make at home....although I still haven't and probably won't. I've been here many times and the service is excellent. In fact, Dina is probably the nicest, most friendliest server I've ever encountered. Her awesome sidekick is Wendy and she's just as sweet as well. They both go out of their way to make sure your experience is terrific. As for the food this is my favorite spot for breakfast as they have plenty of tasty and fresh options available. The avocado toast is what they are known for - it's super tasty! This cozy little place is my favorite go-to! A lot of places in Hermosa and Manhattan are broken into 2 breakfast categories: Coffee shops with pastries but no breakfast, or breakfast restaurants with no coffee drinks. This place has a breakfast and lunch menu, pastries and a variety of coffee and tea drinks. The Australian owner, Will also provides little Aussie treats you can't get anywhere else. I really appreciated a gluten free option for their sandwiches (rice tortilla wrap, which they toasted to a crunch for my Avocado with Egg White Toast...delicious!). We tried both egg sandwiches and they were both delicious. The menu doesn't say it comes with a salad, but it does, and the mustard dressing is super tasty. The patio is very relaxing and you can see the ocean without seeing the tourists. Win. As an extra bonus beyond the food being very nice was that the people were very friendly and helpful. We loved this place so much that we came back to pick up lunch (meat pies with salad) on our way to the airport. We also got caramello koalas for dessert with our lunch and they were really yummy. If you've never had Aussie chocolate, give this kind a go. Two thumbs way up!!! read more

Such a cute spot. The ambiance is wonderful, you feel like you're walking into a friends house. Plus while you wait for your fresh and delicious food you can peruse the adorable gift shop attached. The out door patio is a charming place to enjoy brunch or a late lunch. Their gazpacho soup is addictive especially in the warm summer months. I adore their beet salad, as well as all of their sandwiches. I haven't had a chance to try their meat pies, but I'm looking forward to that day. They have a small selection of baked goods and small bags of candy to tempt me, sadly they often win. I only wish they were open later, and that they didn't take so long some times. I think that the owners did a great job of converting a little house into a combined restaurant/cafe boutique. It reminds me of those Americana restaurants you find in roadtrip towns, where you have simple fare in the restaurant and an assortment of giftables in the shop/boutique. I didn't go to the restaurant, so I'll just review the boutique side. It's a really cute beach-side boutique to browse through and find your unconventional wares, be they letterpress cards that appeal to a sense of whimsy, large sock dolls for kids to hug, or intricate hand-designed jewelry items, among other things. It's an eclectic mix, and yet it's all got a homey feel. The prices are a little steep for some of the items. But, then again, it's a non-chain boutique store and the owners seem to offer an assortment of high-brow, upscale items and low-brow, kitschy knick-knacks that you would never think to look for elsewhere. It's definitely worth a lingering walk-through. read more

I was surprised to find Vegemite (a salty bread spread from Australia) on the menu. I'm not a big fan of it, but it was cool to see it and it makes me wonder what other specialty treats are here. At last, I found an authentic aussie eatery in the greater LA area. Gum Tree is owned by Aussies and I appreciated hearing at least 1 of the workers having an Aussie accent because it made the dining experience believable that it was Australian, unlike a certain American Owned/Australian themed restaurant chain. I loved the quaint beachside cafe feel that reflected it's location in Hermosa Beach and allowed me to enjoy the Aussie lunch flavors without it feeling gimmicky. The 'mini me plate' is tasty and left me wanting to order a full sized version of either/all meat pie, chicken pie and sausage roll, not because I was still hungry (came with a side salad) but because it was so yummy. The additional beet salad I ordered was delicious too... especially the goat cheese. If you don't see a lamington on display be sure to ask for one as I did and was in luck. It is a traditional hand held sponge cake coated in chocolate and coconut, perfect to pair with a coffee. Can't wait to go back and try other menu items. read more

Interesting little "Aussie" restaurant in Hermosa Beach. We came here because my Australian friend found it, and it advertised selling Australian Meat Pies. The cafe had basically everything Australian: Tim Tams, Vegemite, Milo, meat pies, sausage rolls, etc...sadly, they were also at Australian prices. Ouch. The meat pies were $7 and came with a salad. It was way over priced for what we got. The pies were tasty, but reminiscent of Pie Face in Australia. Still, as one of the only places in town that even knows what a meat pie is, it was a nice place to stop in and try out. The staff was friendly, and there are fun maps of Australia hung in the store as well. read more

I've lived off pier for the last three years and I finally tried Gum Tree after seeing the patio busy often. I was not pleasantly surprised. After paying $20 for my meal at the counter and adding gratuity I went outside. My food and drink were delivered, I asked for a napkin and fork and was instructed I could get it myself inside.... ok the staff member came past me several more times over the next 30+ min and never once brought a napkin. I was dining alone and did not feel comfortable leaving my food, drink, purse at the table to go inside the store to get what I needed so I needed to carry my food, coffee, and purse inside opening two doors to get a napkin and fork to eat. For a restaurant that asks for tipping and charges the prices they do (which I don't mind paying) I thought the customer service was awful. read more

I love this place. My parents own the shop next door so I'm here fairly often. I've never had a bad meal or drink here. Their pesto pasta is my fam's favorite but we also love their sandwiches and salads. Roasted beet is my personal favorite and I usually add their chicken to it and it's filling and so tasty. I also love their matcha here and love that they have organic, raw honey near their creamer to add to drinks. My boyfriend adds it to his cold brew here and loves it. They also have a small bakery section with adorable mini muffins and tim tam cookies. I made my boyfriend do his first ever Tim tam slam here and he gave it a 10/10. It's Hermosa Beach so parking is how you'd expect - metered and busy. It's worth it to look though as you're just a walk down from the beach and there are plenty of cute shops to browse in the area. One of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots in Southbay! Super cute Australian-run cafe a block away from the beach. This used to be someone's beach house, so the white cottage-like, minimalist decor is the perfect spot for weekend brunch! As confirmed by a good Australian friend from Melbourne, this place is really authentic with their Tim Tams (kinda pricey to be buying per piece), white flats (basically an espresso latte), vegemite, and meat pies. My favorites are the Aussie meat pie & sausage roll, both served with a side salad and very filling. Some tips: -Since PARKING is always a nightmare in beach towns like Hermosa Beach, first try the CVS plaza at the corner of PCH/Pier Avenue. They never check parking here and they don't mark tires so you can pretty much park here all day (hellooo beach day!). It's just a bit of a walk to Gumtree so if you're lazy, don't park here. If you can't find any spots, try the Hermosa Public Library free parking off Pier/Valley. -Gumtree closes very early and they tend to run out of food (especially the meat pies) so get there no later than 1pm. -BEST table is on the deck by the main entrance in between the cafe and store. It's private and you get the best view! -Make sure to check out the adorable Gumtree general store connected to the cafe. They offer a one-time Birthday 20% DISCOUNT on everything in the store for your entire Birthday month! Look for the Birthday offer postcard at the register. Since seating is limited (especially the patio), its best to come here early by 11am, otherwise good luck waiting for a spot! Super-friendly, chill service! read more

This place is so cute!!! Really good meat pies too! Whenever I think about going there I just start singing the music from Sweeney Todd, probably bad imagery to go with a really good cafe... They also have a super cute boutique, I've never shopped there but it's so quaint and adorable. Out of all the meat pies, I love the curry chicken one best. Reminds me of Switzerland, and getting attacked by swans in a paddle boat. The crust is super good and buttery too. The coffee is fantastic! read more

Gum Tree Cafe (GTC) is a totally adorable place for a morning snack. (I'd describe it as "totes adorbs", but I don't think I'm that basic...yet.) GTC is actually one-half of the Gum Tree bungalow -- the other half being a cute boutique with Australia-themed items. The menu at GTC isn't especially Australian, though. I opted for a cafe mocha and a bowl of toasted organic quinoa. The mocha was gorgeous to look at, and tasted fabulous. The quinoa was a nice, healthy departure from the usual morning cereal or oatmeal -- although it could've use a little more fruit or honey to temper the earthiness. The biggest draw at GTC is the location. Located on Pier Ave in the heart of Hermosa Beach, the people-watching opportunities are endless. Just grab a book (or iGadget of choice), get comfortable with a warm beverage, and fritter the morning away. read more

This little cafe was so cute and charming. I love the added gift shop on the side and the healthy options for breakfast and lunch. I ordered the toasted quinoa breakfast bowl, and while I liked it and found it to be filling, there was something missing. Maybe add in some granola so that there is an added crunch, or maybe a dash of cinnamon so it is not quite so bland. I'm not really sure what it needed but it was missing something. Even though I was left wanting a bit more, I would return here for sure. The quality of the food and the service was enough to bring me be back, but I will be sure to try other options off of the menu this time. read more
