They have lovely food (my favorite is the beet salad with macadamia nuts and goat cheese) - and the store next door is absolutely adorable! If you ever need a present, especially for a baby shower or housewarming party, come here. I am sure you'll find something cute or tasteful. Only downside: the cafe closes in the middle of the day (3 or 4pm). What a pity for people who are working during the day! read more

Bottom line up front: It's always a great experience eating here. Beautiful beach cottage-like feel, delicious healthy choices, great outdoor seating area that's perfect for bringing your dog with you to lunch. The one negative is that it's pricey but as long as you expect that, you'll love it. I've been to this place many times, for my lunch break, friends date, husband date, me-time, you name it. I usually come here when I want to eat something extremely healthy and the Quinoa Salad is my go-to favorite. It's fresh, filling, and surprising full of flavor (the dressing is amazeballs). Out door seating is the best if it's a warm sunny day. I brought my dog Callie here with me once and it was great. They even have free dog treats available near the entrance of the area. Customer service is always great. Everyone is so friendly and happy, it really makes a difference when the entire staff exudes this kind of energy, so keep it up Gum Tree! This is a cute place. We came for breakfast on Sunday and got the avocado toast with scrambled egg (it wasn't really scrambled, more like a folded beaten egg), it was topped with red pepper flakes and it was actually very good. The toast had a nice crunch and it was a simple and easy breakfast. My husband got the special which was the avocado toast with feta and balsamic. The flavors and textures were great together. My 4 year old loved her steel cut oats and ate almost half the bowl all by herself which is a lot. With two lattes everything was about $40 before tip. A little pricey but it was a nice breakfast. If we had gone to a typical breakfast place it would probably have cost the same for a heavier breakfast but we would have left feeling much heavier too ;) Overall, good service and good food. read more

This place is a go-to neighborhood coffee shop. It's a beautiful little building on a hill with a nice little outdoor patio. The service is always great, there is never a really long line, the coffee is good and the food is great. I especially like their breakfast sandwich, and one of the staff members gave me a great recommendation to get cheddar instead of goat cheese, and it turned out to be a great choice! This place is a great destination for a nice sunny weekend late-morning coffee walk. Highly recommended if you're visiting, or if you're a local. I love that it's all tucked in a attractive little craftsman house, where one side provides a charming dining experience and the other provides charming things to buy. Okay, enough with the charm. The food is delicious, the coffee is excellent, the atmosphere is pleasantly relaxing. The menu covers a wide range of items that appeals to every type of eater-- sandwiches, meat pies, salads, eggs, pastries, organic, vegan, gluten free-- you name it. And since the owners are from Austrailia and MB, there's this appealing hometown feel mixed with an unpretentious global experience (it's worth reading their bios). I tried a unique veggie madras curry pie that had a zesty zing to it. I enjoyed a flat white coffee, while my partner liked the ginger lemonade. I'll definitely come back to sample more scrumptiously fresh items on their fascinating eclectic menu. The gift shop is full of cool items and a perfect spot for browsing after you eat. All their wares have been chosen with care and are of high quality (cookbooks, toys, linens, knickknacks, jewelry, home decor, etc.) They've done a wonderful job of catering to singles and families. My favorite new find in the south bay: It's an Anthropologie-esque shop next to a fast and tasty cafe, all inside one huge airy beach house. So much to look at! My favorite was this anchor welcome mat and silverware that I just had to touch (sorry ;). The jewelry was reasonably priced and there was so much inventory even though they had just apparently been cleaned out by a holiday sale. Gum Tree is a cute little boutique style cafe in Manhattan, close to all the cute little Manhattan boutiques. The food is delicious. I love the Australian meat pies! I typically get the trio meat pie as a nice snack or a sausage roll. This place is a treat. The have really good coffee. My boyfriend really enjoyed the food and then patiently waited for me to check out their lovely attached gift shop. The shop is one of those gift shops that's filled with adorable novelty items and more. Perfect for gift shopping :) This is an especially great choice for having lunch with Mom or the girls. read more

Sorry, this Aussie was thoroughly disappointed. The coffee was burnt and poorly prepared. The food was dismal, especially for the price. Some of the photos here make it look well presented, mine was definitely not. It was bland and boring and very overpriced for what we got. Came into this store a few months ago and was overcharged by sales woman who then admitted to discrepencny but stated it was store policy to not give refunds!!! WTF you OVERCHARGED MEE! And I"m supposed to only get store credit bu not a refund back! When asked to speak with manager she stated she wasnt available and couldnt call her! Needless to say we got into a pretty onesided agreememt in store as to why I have to pay for her MESS UPPPPP. Classic BLT and "Mama's potatoe salad" !! It was a last minute pick right after work but luckily no line & a very chill vibe. Next door there's a cute little store where you can browse while you wait for your food. It's Hallmark meets a boutique book store to me. But don't worry, the wait was not too long. The staff is super attentive and patient too. It gives you a chance to check out a spot & ask questions if you want without feeling pressured. The atmosphere is very similar to a mom and pop coffee shop but the food options look & sound delicious. Which is not always up to par in comparison to the coffee but at this place both were pretty good. The prices are a bit too high for my taste otherwise I'd stop by more often and there are not enough seating in my opinion. But overall I do recommend if you want good quick breakfast & coffee to go or pick up! read more

I had a new friend open a store right around the corner from Gum Tree and she was having her opening weekend last weekend. Another friend and I came and supported but wanted a quick bite first. We walked down the hill and the first thing we saw was Gum Tree. We saw on their sign that they had sandwiches and said why not. BEST DECISION EVER!! Had a quick breakfast stop here before a day at a local spa...there was a little bit of a wait for our food on the patio, but it was a gorgeous Hermosa Beach day so it was fine. Ordered a very interesting 'toasted' quinoa with dried fruit...I guess I thought it would be more like a crispy cereal or actually 'toasted' but it was served in the same fashion one might get in a salad. Regardless, it was tasty...the added fruit and nuts made it all the more enjoyable. My friend had the avocado toast; really nice! Avocado spread on toast with feta and a drizzle of balsamic with a side of really good fruit. Overall, a very healthy breakfast on a patio with a great view for people (or traffic) watching. :) I'd go back...they have a small shop attached but we didn't have enough time on this outing to check it out. Very cute and charming little cafe located near the beach. Inside there is a small seating area, very clean. Outside is a great space with lots of seating and umbrellas to block you from the sun. From some of the outdoor seating you have a nice view of the pier and ocean. I got a flat white... having loved them in New Zealand but this was just okay. Small and not very creamy. Plus they charge so much for almond milk... never exactly excited to see people charging heaps for a small about of almond milk. But hey if you drink regular milk you'll be just fine! I can't believe I haven't written a review about Gum Tree, when it is hands down my favorite place in the South Bay. My husband and I used to live walking distance and were here every weekend, enjoying their amazing coffee and avocado toast. Since moving a mile further we still come for breakfast when we can every weekend, and I usually indulge in something from the shop as well. Coffee that taste rich and is done with quality! Jack, Dina and Yuma are amazing! If you have the opportunity to be served and helped by these 3 gals I guarantee your Gum Tree experience will be above 100%! I get coffee here almost every morning before heading to work at Curious and it is thanks to these girls that I start my day with a smile on my face! Sometimes I'm not having a good morning but these lovely girls change that around for me every time! Reminds me of other cafes, so nothing too unique here. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, with pesto, goat cheese, and tomatoes, and was prepared to get the tortilla wrap to make the "healthy choice" but it came on buckwheat bread anyways, so bread me up! The sandwich was really yummy. I chose mixed greens with it, but I should have ordered the dressing on the side because I felt like i was doused in dressing (see my photo).
