Wow what an amazing dinner for our last night visiting Portland! The service was so good; the host especially took great care of us. We started with the fry bread and burrata. The burrata was some of the best we've ever had and went well with the bread. I think the bread would have been too heavy and plain on its own, so glad we had that. The Pappardelle dish was my favorite of the night, there was so much short rib in there and all of the "extras" added a delicious crunch. It was much bigger than I was expecting as well. My finance had the Pork Saltimbocca and we actually shared our dishes which I would recommend. It was very good as well, the pork was so tender and everything was so flavorful. Even though we came hungry, we couldn't finish everything which is quite rare for us. The prices are very reasonable for both the quantity and quality of food. I only wish we had this spot at home as we would love to return. We were seated at a table in the bar area which had great cozy ambiance, perfect for a date night. The main dining room is lighter and brighter. We had no trouble with street parking right out front. We did make a reservation shortly before going on a Monday evening. Chose Gumba for my birthday dinner because I had heard so many good things about their food going back to their food cart beginnings. Plus, I love Italian food. Inside is warm, fun andinviting. Lots of color and different seating areas. The bar area is very cool and includes bar seating. The states up front that this is not your typical Italian preparation, but Gumba's interpretation. Truth in advertising. We started with the homemade burrata, fry bread and orange flavored olives. The burrata was very creamy and almost had a melted marshmallow consistency. Along with the olive oil, it was delicious on the American Indian styled fry bread. I didn't care for the olives at all. The orange was so overpowering and the honey made it so sweet, inedible sweet. There was none of the salty brine taste that olives hAve and we were craving. I've had olives marinated in lemon many times and the lemon enhances, doesn't over power. These were just wrong. For dinner I got the pappardelle with braised short rib. The sauce and short ribs were so salty that I literally couldn't eat it. It was such a shame as the pasta was home made and I really wanted it! I even mentioned this to our waiter who didn't offer a replacement or even any comment. Should have listened to the many Yelp reviewers who made this exact same observation. My friend had a pasta with an asparagus and mushroom sauce that was much better so we ended up sharing that. For desert we shared a slice of their eggplant olive oil cake. The eggplant threw us off but I'm glad it didn't stop us from ordering it. This was by far the star of the meal. I'm kind of bummed about it because after reading all the positive reviews, I was really looking forward to spending some serious calories on their carb loaded menu. We ordered: Fry Bread with chicken liver mousse -- the fry bread was delicious and the mousse made for a great spread. The raisin things on the side that came with the mousse was just too sweet. We couldn't eat it and left it on the plate when we were packing up our leftovers. Squid ink spaghettini--my husband's choice for the evening. He said he really enjoyed this dish. I liked his meal more than my own because it was packed with some serious flavor. It was citrusy and refreshing. Pesto spaghetti with crab--on paper this pasta sounded delish. While the pesto flavors came through, the whole dish itself was very bland. It was just under seasoned. The pasta too was lacking and felt overcooked. I ended up not finishing the dish as I didn't want to spend anymore calories on it. Eggplant Olive Oil Cake--I've never had an eggplant cake before and I'm always down to try new things. Top 25 restaurants in Portland or don't @ me. FOOD Personally I think this is one of the better Italian places in the Portland area. Their unique take on some of the Italian cuisine is phenomenal. We ordered the calamari, Squid Ink Spaghettini, and a special Longioli. The calamari was not your typical batter fried bar food. It's grilled with sun dried tomatoes amongst other things. Definitely a must try in my book. The squid ink spaghettini was pretty decent as well. The seafood was PHENOMENAL. Not sure how they cooked it but it's softer than charmin for sure. The spaghetti sauce itself is a bit sour, especially when you reach towards the bottom of the plate but overall a pretty nice dish. The longioli was a special of the night, not sure if they offer it when you go but it's very very good for my taste. SERVICE The service was pretty solid. The waitress was attentive and very nice. It was my sister's birthday and she had wanted to go to this restaurant for some time. A bunch of our siblings and relatives came to celebrate with her. You would never know this place existed from the outside. I have frequented joints, like Pine State and Proud Mary's, on Alberta street many times. But this restaurant is tucked away in the back recesses of the street. Nothing fancy on the exterior. When you enter, the mood is very romantic and intimate. There are whimsical decorations surrounded by fun patterned wallpaper. Even though our table was very large, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The server we had was very knowledgeable and attentive. She was patient with our group and helped make some good recommendations on food and drink. We started on some appetizers. The albacore and tomato bruschetta was good but nothing to write home about. The fry bread on the other hand was the MVP. It doesn't look like much but the bread has a wonderful crunch on the outside with a soft and spongy interior. The Parmesan and rosemary add a nice little punch without overpowering the bread. The little flakes of sea salt and creamy burrata on the side helped marry everything together. For my entree I had the rotolo with shrimp. This was the least flavorful thing I had there. This dish did not have as much substance compared to the other ones. The ingredients like the shrimp, peas, and mozzarella were just muted and everything kind of blended together. I preferred the squid ink entree over this. After we finished dinner, the staff was very accommodating to provide us with forks and plates for the cake we brought in. Overall, I appreciated the unique Italian twist that this restaurant provides. Depending on what you get, some dishes pack a flavor punch more than others. The Fry bread, like the others mention is definitely a must have! It's fresh, crispy and it's delicious even on its own. The chopped salad was also my favorite, they were able to make this vegetarian and it was perfect. It had a perfect mix of tanginess yet savory as well. The Tagliatelle was good and unique, loved the presentation and how the toppings went with the dish. Wish they add some sort of plant based protein but otherwise it's solid. Their tiramisu however was too sweet and felt like it was a store bought version so I'd skip that but otherwise a good time. The service we got and the ambiance was top notch. Mushroom Alfredo - 5/5!! No hesitation on that rating. The noodles were cooked perfectly -- the flavors and textures were mesmerizing. Rigatoni - 4.5. The pasta was a just a bit undercooked on the harder side however flavors were still there. Ambiance is chill and the staff was so friendly. Gumba is located in the Alberta neighborhood, so has many places to go before or after dining here. (My favorite is going to the wine bar 'Les Caves and Le Clos', which is right by.) Not gonna lie, the night started out rough for my girlfriend and I. She wanted burgers and didn't realize this was a pasta place. Nor that it was a "nice" place. After opening the front door we saw a guy in a suit jacket, meanwhile I was wearing sweatpants and a bulky Steelers hoodie. When we were seated at the bar I went to take off my hoodie and I felt a hand tugging at my shirt. It was my girlfriend. That thing happened where your shirt gets scrunched up and your stomach shows. Seriously, seriously good food. The word that comes to my mind is "professional". It's just clear to me that the people behind the food are well trained and some of the more skilled people in their field. And it really turned our night around after the rough start. First was the ceasar salad and fry bread with burrata. I've had ceasar salad's a bunch of times before, but this was pretty clearly the best. The level of flavor was just higher. Nice amount of crunch to the lettuce, creamy dressing but not too thick, maybe some sort of shaved parmesean and stuff for different textures. I'm not sure exactly but it really was great. It also came with these pickled red onions. I don't like pickled flavors so I was planning on not eating them but my girlfriend urged me to try it, saying that it's not pickle-y at all and instead has a sort of mellow sweetness. And she was right. That little extra pop to contrast the creamy dressing was just awesome. I also thought it was cool that the salad had no green color! Speaking of cool, omg was that burrata good. It had a cool but not cold temperature that really made it awesome. It was creamy with a little bit of saltiness. Kinda bland in a sense, but not in a bad way. Just very fresh and high quality. I liked how some bites were solid enough to chew and others were creamy, almost liquid but not quite. OTOH the fry bread was fine but nothing special. Fry bread is a Native American thing so it was interesting to see it on the menu. We ordered calamari as well. They forgot to bring it and when I asked if it was on it's way the server immediately acknowledged that he forgot, seemed genuinely disappointed as if he actually gives a shit about our experience, said they'd get it out ASAP and not include it on the bill. Wow. That really impressed me. I don't like calamari so I didn't have any but my girlfriend said that a) it was great and b) you can't really compare it to others since this was kinda cooked differently; other places are more sauted/grilled but this wasn't. Ok, now for the pasta. Again, wow. Professional! It just really screamed out to me that the people behind it really knew wtf they are doing. Fresh tasting, perfectly cooked, awesome sauces. I really appreciated how the pappardelle had a crunchy element to it, some sort of breadcrumbs maybe. The braised beef with the pappardelle was perfect. The meatballs with the spaghetti carbonara were awesome and had a really nice kick to them. The carbonara sauce itself was one of my favorite parts of the meal. Creamy with a nice pop of black pepper. Just so well done. I wish I could describe it better. The drinks were also awesome. I got this Italian lemonade soda thing that was great. Pretty strong lemon flavor but not too overwhelming. One of the best sodas I've ever had. My girlfriend got a wine that she liked and then this other drink that she was super impressed with. Something about using the right amount of lemon to get a pink color that is really difficult to do. The deserts were less impressive. Still good, just not great. The special pasta of the evening was the spicy spaghetti with pork belly and it did not disappoint. The sauce wasn't all that spicy but was enough to pair well with pork belly since it cuts some of the richness and fattiness. The beet salad and the pappardelle were also amazing dishes. It's been awhile since I've had terrible service. The waitress seemed liked she didn't want to work or had somewhere else to be. She left us menus and left, didn't say much the entire time. When ordering, I asked about the sausage add-on and she responded with attitude "it's good". That's it, just a "it's good" + attitude. She refilled our water bottle once, asked if we wanted dessert and came back when we were ready to pay. She spent no more than 5 minutes at our table. Never checked up on us, never smiled, didn't even say thank you towards the end, just handed the credit cards back. I should have tipped her less than the 20%. Good, but I had little room left after the Fry Bread and Burrata. For dinner I had the Tagliatelle. Spicy Vodka Sauce, braised leeks, pickled peppers, ricotta cheese and I added the fennel sausage. Very Good. I was sad that I was too full, but knew I had great left overs (unless you have a night time bandit in your household). Awesome food and environment. Portion for the pastas were little small but to be expected in more up scale places like this. But portions for appetizers were decent so I recommend getting some, especially the fresh flat bread. I was super impressed that our waitress took down our entire order (table of 4) without pen and paper and just pure memory. read more
