This place was so good. Amazing. We loved it. Po-boy: definitely the best I've had in a while. Absolutely FULL of shrimp. Potato salad: better than my mamas. In fact, may have edged into slap ya mama territory. Definitely beat your aunties. Red beans and rice: absolutely better than mine, and mine are pretty freaking good. I love me some good ol' Southern-style gumbo and this place looked so tempting everytime I passed it on 9th Ave. in Downtown Anchorage. The street sign is huge and the bright pink building (with lots of parking out front) drew me in one cold Alaskan evening. Ordered the shrimp gumbo, medium (13.99), and it was DELICIOUS! Seriously the seasoning was amazing and with the rice it was filling and kept me warm. I am definitely ordering another one soon. Rice and bean, cup (5.99), was okay. Needed more fat and seasonings BUT when you mixed it with your gumbo it was a winning combination! Dont recommend eating it alone. Plain ol' cornbread (2.49 for a piece) was DRY. I mean crumbly, overcooked dry. No butter flavor. Had to soak that sucker in my gumbo. I overloaded on carbs here but I wasnt aware that the gumbo came with rice already. Ordered through Grubhub here on Yelp (it was a 0.99 delivery fee for Downtown Anchorage addresses) and got my order delivered in 45 minutes. ETA was 40 to 50 minutes. So many things wrong gumbo was awful the Roux tastes burnt, the okra was crunchy and it was just weird. red beans taste like out of a can with ketchup Catfish has no real flavor. Was pretty excited to see a highly reviewed cajun restaurant up in Anchorage, my wife being from near Beaumont Texas has a lot of fond memories of Louisiana influence cooking. Red beans and rice being one of her favorite dishes. We tried the jambalaya, the red beans and rice, chicken gumbo, and a bbq pork po boy. The red beans and rice really fell short for both of us. We'd of preferred Popeye's. The gumbo also didn't deliver, lacking flavor, ending up being just oily and very salty. The jambalaya was okay, rather bland but edible. We ended up wasting the red beans and rice, and the gumbo - wasn't worth finishing. The bbq pork po boy was actually very good, and had we only had that I would of rated the place much much higher. It's a little spot near the Convention Center and next door to a speakeasy and down the street from the Hilton and mall - anyways, the service was 5 . Greeted as soon as I walked in. Saw this place yesterday and decided to give it a try. When I first pulled up and saw the parking lot empty on a Saturday I was wondering if that was a sign. Trying not to judge I went inside anyway. My first thought is the building has been a dozen or more different things over the years. An old house converted into a restaurant it has several small rooms and a very cut up appearance. We sit at a small table in the main dining area, only one other couple in the place. I'm handed a laminated cheer of paper that's the menu. I order the chicken gumbo and cornbread. She orders the shrimp gumbo and cornbread. Once the food is put on the window the waiter, who is obviously drunk off his ass at 1 in the afternoon, brings the food over, spilling it all over the place as he does. I'm having second thoughts about this place for sure but I decide to give the food a try, maybe it's worth it. Immediately I know it's not authentic anything, oily, watered down soup with little to no flavor. Hardly any meat and what's there looks like scraps from something else. The cornbread was old and stale. The place is dirty, they're serving ice out of a camping cooler on a chair. What have I gotten myself in to! My fiancé and I were down town and had sometime to kill and we were hungry for some lunch and this place popped up. This place is a great place to pop in for a quick bite and be on your way. He has fawned memories of this place when he worked downtown working construction during the winter. Offering warm hearty food and decent sized portions of food for a decent price. This place this time did not disappoint. A Restrant this small can get caught up in the larger down town places but being that the house is painted bright pink it's hardly a restrant you could miss. Upon entering we were greeted warmly and were directed to find a seat. The waitress, mind you, who was waiting the total of 8-10 tables in there was awesome. She suggested we get the lunch special our choice of 1/2 a Po'Boy and a cup of either Jambalaya or Gumbo. We both opted for the lunch special. I got the gumbo, which was delish. It had sausage, chicken and oysters with nice sized pieces or okra. YUM it had great flavor I also got the blackened shrimp Po'Boy which has a great sweet remoulade and pickles. Omg it's had the best contrast of sweet and spicy. The fiancé got the gumbo which was also good it had the kitchen sink in it as well. Great flavor! He also got the BBQ Pork Po'Boy also a great flavor with a little bit of spice and sweetness from the remoulade. Overall great experience from this place I would def go back again! read more

Cute place, sweet staff, and decent grub. Today I met a friend here for lunch - she got the jambalaya and corn bread and I got the crab cakes. I'd never actually had what I can only guess was deep fried crab cakes... the outer shell was similar to what you'd see on deep fried mushrooms or cheese sticks. The inside was good though - creamy with a heavy does of crab - and the sauce was zesty and delicious. I even enjoyed the side of corn - perfectly crunchy and seasoned. Overall though, I would have liked more traditional pan fried cakes. The waiter (who may have also been an owner?) was very sweet and attentive. That, the convenient downtown location, plus the delicious jambalaya on my previous visit will likely bring me back again at some point. I came down here yesterday for lunch with a friend while running errands around town. The Gumbo House is located in a small pink-colored cottage that formerly housed Cilantro's Mexican Restaurant years ago on W. 9th Ave between F and G St. across from the Delaney Park Strip in downtown. The dining interior is small and cozy with New Orleans and jazz memorabilia adorning the walls all around (my kind of scene being a jazz vinyl collector). If there is any place in America that I would have a blast posting reviews on, that would be the French Quarter in New Orleans. Some of the best restaurants in the country can be found along those famous streets. One of these days.... The person behind the counter who appears to be the manager greeted us warmly as we walked in and beckoned us to take any table that was open. I already knew what I was craving and I didn't have to look long at the menu before deciding on what to order. I went with a bowl of traditional Jambalaya (chicken, Andouille sausage, and shrimp with white rice sprinkled with parmesan cheese). I also ordered a side of Corn Muffins which is available in plain or jalapeno. My friend thought that was a great choice and ordered the same. The corn muffin came out piping hot with some butter on the side as the jambalaya arrived shortly after. The thick stew was delicious with plenty of shredded chicken, shrimp, and flavorful sausage in a spicy broth. The steamed white rice made a great addition along with the parmesan cheese to make for a filling lunch. There were also several other menu items of note to try out on the next visit or picking up for co-workers during weekday lunch. Ones that caught my eye were the signature Gumbo (traditional dark roux, Holy Trinity which is onions, bell peppers, and celery that are the base ingredients for the dish, Andouille sausage okra, and rice), Blackened Catfish served with red beans and rice....this will be my next order, the Oyster Po Boy, the Boiled Shrimp Remoulade Appetizer, Crab Cakes...(always looking out for these on a menu!), and the Bread Pudding with Kahlua sauce for dessert. There was a second location off of Old Seward in the Dimond area that closed a few months back. I asked the manager if they had plans to reopen elsewhere, but he said that remains up in the air for now until business starts picking up again. Copies of their menu are available in the restaurant as it looks like their website is no longer active. My husband and I ate here tonight with our daughter and it was a hit and miss. The service was really good, the food was just not great. We ordered the Taste of the South and Angel Hair Pasta dinner dishes. The Angel Hair Pasta was the better dish I would eat it again however, the sampler was not good at all! If a place is called "Gumbo House" I would expect the gumbo to be good but it was the worst thing of all that we had. The jambalaya was not much better. Cornbread is TO DIE FOR. Both the gumbo and the jambalaya are great! The fried okra will send you out of this world (but I think it also gave me bad indigestion- so don't forget the tums!) Good portions for price. No issues ever with service but I haven't sat down to eat in their new location yet. Probably a spot I will always take out of town folks. Excellent little place to grab a bowl of gumbo or jambalaya! The restaurant doesn't look like mucj on the outside and it's certainly not fancy, but the flavor is absolutely delicious! I ordered the jambalaya and it had a wonderful tomatoey taste to it. It was enough spicy for me but I can see how others would probably say it is not spicy enough. My husband ordered the kitchen sink gumbo and it was also very tasty. The gumbo has more of a pepper taste than the tomato taste of the jambalaya. There was a generous amount chicken, shrimp, and sausage too! One thing I think could be better is the bowl that this is placed in. I felt like both the gumbo and jambalaya would've been much more amazing and comfortable to eat if they had been in a rounder or larger bowl. There was little room for me to move the fork around without spilling rice. If you have the northern lights book you'll save plenty with their coupon! :-) read more

First time visiting when we were in Anchorage recently. Love the food we had, it was delicious!

My husband and I live in a remote part of Alaska and expended considerable effort to dine at Gumbo House. Unfortunately, our meal was not worth the effort. When we swing through Anchorage, our time is short and our transportation is often limited. Coupled with this is that Gumbo House is wrapped up in some sort of mess with Restaurant.com in which we are not sure who is to blame. Our Gumbo House odyssey started in July in which we exchanged a restaurant.com certificate for one at the south Anchorage location of Gumbo House. When we pulled up to that location, there was a sign on the door that they were permanently closed. We were surprised by this because there was no indication of this on: A) restaurant.com B) yelp C) Gumbo House's website (yes, I had looked at all three). We did not feel like driving downtown at that time so we planned to try again on this August trip. Which brings us to the present day. We exchanged the south Anchorage restaurant.com certificate for the downtown Gumbo House location. We had a rental car and drove downtown, parking in the free 2 hour parking south of the park strip, and enjoyed a walk first. Gumbo House is in a real house. We both really like the little old houses in downtown and south addition and appreciate that Gumbo House has kept the house intact. The inside is very cute as well, with creative painting of music notes and Cajun scenes. The host/server allowed us to sit where we wanted and we chose a little room with no one else in it. The environment is probably the only thing we liked about this restaurant. Our restaurant.com certificate required that we purchase $50 in one sitting, so we had gone planning to get lots of leftovers. We have used restaurant.com certificates in Anchorage at several other places and never had a problem, but since we planned to order leftovers, we decided to show the certificate to the server before we ordered. He immediately said "You've been scammed, we don't accept those." We explained that we bought it blah blah blah and he said that he would get in trouble with his boss if he accepted it. He indicated that this has happened quite a few times with many customers going back some time. Hmm. We asked for a minute to re-group. I would have left at that point, but my husband really wanted to try it. So we scaled back our order and placed it. The food arrived a few minutes later. The first item out was the caesar salad. While huge, it was underwhelming visually. It was a giant bowl of romaine so pale it looked like iceberg. It was scattered with parmesan and croutons and came with a side cup of their housemade dressing. It was very bland and we uncharacteristically did not finish it. My husband took the leftovers to go, and even more uncharacteristically never ate it. The second item was a cup of oyster gumbo. This was totally blah. To me it even had an off taste and was pretty icky. Finally came the calamari po'boy with coleslaw. Po'boys come with a choice of potato salad, fries, or coleslaw. The coleslaw was meh. Some of the cabbage was limp and it lacked flavor. The sandwich was decent. The calamari was very good; the bread was nothing special (not stale but not fresh-tasting). It was vastly improved with the addition of hot sauce. They provided two Louisiana-made hot sauces on the table and we tried them both, preferring the one with habanero in it. We were antsy for the check. It took us a bit to find the server again, but he gave us a $10 discount of our bill because of the certificate problem. He talked at length about other customers having problems bringing them in and literally not having the money to pay for their food. When we left, I looked up this restaurant.com issue and it appears that the Better Business Bureau has a lot of problems with their business practices. But I can't help but think that if Gumbo House has had so many problems with them, can't they have done something to get their name off their website? Or put a warning on their website stating, "We do not accept restaurant.com certificates" or something. I can't help but feeling that the owner is leaving this problem to the servers to deal with, which is a bum deal for everyone. We debated between 2 and 3 stars. The food is awful in my book and ranked about a 1 star. The place is cute, which brings it up a bit. The server gave us a discount, but otherwise we just felt like they don't really have their act together. read more
