Wow! We ate here today for the first time. I had the 1/2 sandwich and cup special....Shrimp Po Boy and Jambalaya. The bread was just right, the sauce was delicious, the pickles were a perfect touch and the shrimp was incredible. And my Jambalaya was delish, the shrimp in it was perfection. They have a new Sweet Shoppe for desserts. We had a cookie and a Cinnamon Roll Waffle. We ordered it sans icing plus ice cream. Oh my goodness!!!!!!! Wonderful. Definitely worth the trip. Also would like to mention that this is a family run restaurant. Beautifully run. Several large tables available for bigger families. Three thumbs up ! read more

Ughhhhhh. Been here 5 times. My wife works close by so when we have lunch, she asks to go here. Now my issue is this. First time I order shrimp creole. It is great! I wish it was not. Why? I order the same thing every time now. I am not able to experiment and try other menu items because this is so good. Ughhhhh. What to do? Go again and order shrimp creole I suppose;) It is loaded with shrimp. Spiced perfect (not way too hot). Sauce is flavorful! Ughhhh. I will never try anything else because it is so good. This place is outstanding! I have had the gumbo, jambalaya, the shrimp and catfish po' boys as well as the cajun fries. Everything is really tasty--you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. It's authentic and can be very spicy (which I love). They have a slamming bread pudding too. The only thing that keeps me from giving this place a five-star rating is the times they are open. Closing at 6:00 PM and not being open on the weekends keeps me from being able to enjoy their food as much as I want to. Having been here more than a few times, I'm told that indeed, it's a business started by a family who moved to Michigan from about 45 mins. south of Birmingham, Al. Everything I have had is perfect. Portions are massive. They have hush puppies made by hand, a chalkboard of daily specials / new items (which don't appear on their website, possibly ever) and a really rockin' gumbo. Great food and friendly, fast service! Wow! This place is a gem. Their catfish is the best I've ever had, hands down! The chicken wings were cooked to perfection. The fries were hot and crisp. The food is fantastic. Best gumbo I've had outside of being in New Orleans . The sandwiches are amazing. Don't be fooled by the look when you come in this is first class food. The cornbread is sweet and moist. I suggest the "medley" - three cups of awesomeness- pick from 5 creole favorites. The good news is, this place has homemade, tasty food !!! I had the trio of Cajun stuff and it was great. I'm usually disappointed in Gumbo from local restaurants. However, this place has some dynamite gumbo. I guess if you're gonna call your place Gumbo's you should make sure the gumbo is your strong suit. The jambalaya was very good, but the rice was overcooked and cakey. I also had the Shrimp Etoufee, and it was pretty darn wonderful as well. My wife had a fried shrimp dinner and those shrimp were light and tasty !!!! The place is two store fronts. One is just a diner looking place (where the entrance is) and the other is an indoor place made to look like it's outdoors. There are some wonderful elements about the latter room. It has tons of potential and is a pretty decent room the way it is. Our waitress seemed less than interested in serving us. We waited a long time to get service, then we waited a long time to get our food. Finally, a different waitress who seemed VERY INTERESTED in serving us came up and got our food quickly. The first waitress would not get a good review from me. It appears they may have a waitress that they have a problem with. Overall, we were very happy and would probably go back. read more

This place was....okay. We walked up and two employees were sitting outside and one of them was smoking a cigarette, but it was slow, so I get it. We ordered our food and everything was cool. But we found it strange that they added ham to their gumbo. It was...okay. But the ham left a distinct after taste that wasn't aligned with gumbo. The catfish in my catfish po boy was a tad mushy. Service 3 stars-food 2 stars! 2 1/2 stars was not doable. I was trying to find another downtown restaurant when I happened on Gumbo's. This was on a Friday with on street parking and meters. I couldn't tell the last time I had to pay a parking meter-well downtown say it all. I did notice that the courthouse was close by within walking distance. The dining area was clean and there was a regular person who stopped in. Next time I will heed the warning a colleague gave me. Remember where you are when looking for dining options. He advised to get Cajun food in places known for Cajun food. Live and learn. I used a take out menu and placed my order. the staff was helpful and courteous. My order was completed rather quickly as take out requested. What did I get? Well of course Gumbo, Red Beans & Rice, a salad and bread pudding. The Gumbo was good but I've had better. The red beans and rice coming from this West Indian lady was more on the bland side. the salad was good except the huge slivers of red onions was over powering. the bread pudding was disappointing and it oozed this fluid that was not appetizing at all to look at. there was a mushiness that I didn't like. There is a choice of corn bread or bread with meal. My food items came in Styrofoam take out containers. I'd hope this is not the norm in serve ware. There are other restaurants to sample on this trip so don't imagine I'll be back. read more

My experience was beyond amazing! The restaurant sits downtown of Mount Clemens Mi. So it is very unexpected to find southern creole food in the area! I was being adventurous and I love Love Love catfish! Read the reviews and the pictures suffices for the visit and too add I was skeptical because I was the only person in there so I was wondering if it was good! They definitely met and went beyond over my expectations! It was Tuesday so the special is Fish Tacos which was highly recommended but I was stuck on the Catfish Fish and Chips. My waitress was Lauren which is the family of the owners and she provided the BEST service. She was nice enough to let me try the fish tacos which was blackened catfish with slaw and creole mayo... so damn good! My food came the catfish and seasoned fries with a house made tartar and Cole slaw! My food was so good I did not need ketchup or hot sauce which is what I usually drown my food in! Coming back and bringing some family! Thank you for my experience! And the restaurant was very clean! read more

Gumbo's is the best! New Orleans is one of my favorite vacation spots and one of the best places to eat! To have a little taste of NOLA in Mt Clemens is amazing! The family that owns this restaurant is so sweet. It's always the same few faces whenever you go in and they are extremely kind and hospitable. The shrimp po-boy is my favorite, but honestly I haven't tried anything from here that I didn't enjoy! The Mac and cheese is amazing and the fried okra, hushpuppies, fries, gumbo, jambalaya, and étouffée do not disappoint. So happy that they expanded their hours! Customer services was excellent. Our waitress was very attentive. The portion sizes are huge, which is good. I got two meals out of mine. My major complaint is that the gumbo and the jambalaya that I had had too much sodium, which was overpowering. In my opinion, if the rue had been a little thicker, with less salt, it would have been excellent. In regards to the jambalaya, it needed less salt, more sauce and a little more soul. Stopped in to Gumbo's because planned place was closed. Ended up being a great decision. Food and service were great. My girlfriend and I did the Pick 3 with all Cajun samples...fantastic. We went yesterday (Wednesday evening). We were the only people there probably because it was mid week. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. We were a party of 6. Two of us ordered Jambalaya. It was good (spicy but a tad mushy) but didn't come with a salad or anything cool for a contrasting taste. It did come with a dinner roll which I thought was odd. My daughter ordered a side of sweet potato fries which were just this side of burnt. Same for the hush puppies two of us ordered. The others ordered sandwiches and a catfish dinner (overpriced at $13) The service was good, the decor is odd. I didn't like that a more than 20% tip was added automatically to our individual bills. That was VERY off putting. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. read more

Found Gumbos after a quick search of places near us and this place did not disappoint. Our waitress was very sweet and gave us a heads up that she had one table ahead of ours so we knew we weren't being ignored. One of my favorite places to eat. My favorite is the Mac and cheese, it tastes amazing. The sweet tea is really good as well, given the fact that it's hard to find good sweet teas up north. The Cajun pasta is really good as well is a creamy white sauce with chicken and sausage. They usually add two shrimp on the top of it. I have tried their fish po boy which is huge! You will definitely have enough for 2-3 servings. I think it's a great spot to try if your in the area! The prices are ok. I think it's moderate but worth it. read more

I've been to New Orleans many times, and have eaten off the beaten tourist path and I can say that this place has the most authentic New Orleans style food in the area! They just added a cute bakery in the back and they make a mean cafe-au-latte from Cafe du Monde coffee if you ask.
