Recommended because under new ownership and they are featuring sushi. Sushi bar was well worn--but stocked with fresh fish. I was served /comped a kani salad that was delicious, and I NEVER eat kani. Chef assured me through an interpreter that this kani was superior grade--and it was very good. I had yellowtail maki with scallion. Delicious. Pressed for time, I enjoyed 2 pieces of yellowtail nigiri--delicious-- and an ice cold Sapporo. Lovely staff. They have a full Asian menu too with all the regular stuff. I love Gung Ho - it has been my favorite Chinese restaurant in town since I was a kid! Every time I come the food is consistently delicious. Huge portions, affordable prices, and good quality. They have one of my favorite fried rices and lo mein. I also like ordering from them vs other places in town because they have an online ordering system which I like. Their lunch specials are great. We ended up trying Gung Ho because they were one of the few places open on Mondays, and we've been going back regularly! They probably the best local Sushi I've found thus far. The location is convenient and parking is rarely an issue. The interior is basic, no issues, no frills. The staff is the only part that could use a bit of a change. There seems to be two servers, the male does an adequate job but doesn't seem friendly or outgoing, at all. The female is personable but is frequently distracted by her "admirers" who like to hang around the bar area to flirt with her, which many times slows her down and causes delays with food service and delivery orders. Hit or miss as usual. Ordered combo 12 boneless spareribs, chicken fingers, fried rice and egg roll. As has been most recent, the fried rice is under cooked and hard , why can't you get that right? I ordered food for my staff yesterday, and it turned out to be a regretful decision. Unfortunately, I didn't check the bag before leaving the restaurant to ensure that I had all the meals. When I got to work, I realized that one meal was missing, so I called the restaurant to inform them. They claimed they reviewed the kitchen cameras and confirmed that the cook put everything in the bag. At that point, I felt like they were implying I was lying, as the employee continued to insist that all meals were included. They even suggested that I bring back all the meals. Never fails when I go to Gung ho I always order 20 beef teriyaki sticks and end up having the most horrible gas that seems to linger with me for a couple days. Purchased egg foo young and chicken fingers tonight. The egg foo young looked like thick clumps of something and had little taste. The chicken fingers were super greasy and had extra thick batter. The 3.5 stars that Gung Ho has averaged on Yelp is pretty well on-point. I ate here for the first time, dining in, and we ordered sushi. Aside from how excited I was to finally dine out during the pandemic, the restaurant instantly felt nostalgic and I loved looking out the window as we enjoyed a Scorpion Bowl and sushi together. I regret not taking photos then, as we really enjoyed our meal. The service was as expected. I thought to try their Chinese menu for takeout, and was very disappointed. The dumplings, while obviously made in-house, had wrappers that were loose around the meat of the dumpling, and they were VERY greasy. The General Tso's Chicken was so bland, it was barely edible. My boyfriend got the Tangerine Beef which, surprisingly, wasn't too bad. We look forward to going back for sushi, but I unfortunately cannot recommend Gung Ho for Chinese takeout. read more

Our go to sushi place. The sushi is always fresh and tasty! The yellowtail jalepeno appetizer is a favorite. The Mongolian beef is delicious when I'm in the mood for beef instead. Highly recommended! Got dinner from here tonight and it was delicious. The crab Rangoon were on point! 8 for only $5.55? Can't beat that. The sweet sauce that came with them was delicious as well. I got the lo mein, which was pretty standard, but the pork fried rice that comes with their meals is amazing. I don't know what kind of spices and flavoring they used on it, but it's delish. We were very hungry and craving Chinese/Japanese food. We used to come here often about a year ago, but the post-COVID Gung Ho is extremely low quality. The Miso soup was obviously warmed up in the microwave and it was served barely warm. The Tuna and Salmon rolls both tasted like cat food. This restaurant has been around as long as I can remember and its always been a great stop for lunch. The service is always attentive and pleasant and the food prices are very reasonable. This place stayed open during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is great for those of us that love take out. Food is ok. I like their fried rice. Crab rangoons are not that good. Beef on a stick app tastes good, but the pieces are tiny and they charge an outrageous amount for them. General Tso Chicken barely ok, I would not get it again... chicken has no crunch at all and all the pieces with the sauce seemed to be melded into one giant General Blob... chicken and shrimp with asparagus was good. My wife is celiac, she tries to avoid sauces when eating out... One thing my wife liked is that they will do any dish steamed with no sauce (or sauce on the side) upon request. One major turnoff for me is Gung Ho features inflated pandemic pricing. IMO the prices are just way too steep. I have stopped at the Gung Ho Chinese Restaurant on and off for decades, but Colchester isn't usually convenient for me. A few months back, my brother and I were on our way home from a long trip, and decided to pick up some Chinese to go. I suggested Gung Ho, since I hadn't been there in several years. I could tell right off they had redecorated since my last visit, but the aroma was still the same. We got Moo Goo Gai Pan (Chicken, Mushrooms and Vegetables) and Roast Pork Mai Fun (rice vermicelli). I ordered Hot and Sour soup and we both got Roast Pork Egg Rolls. All the food was fresh and not overcooked. The chicken in the Moo Goo Gai Pan was thin, light and not overly seasoned, the vegetables still nice and crispy, not boiled to death. I always find Mai Fun a little too dry, but this was just short of perfect (note to self -- Mai Fun does not travel well -- order Lo Mein unless you're eating in). The Hot and Sour soup was flavorful without being overly spicy (although I later found the Won Ton soup could use a little more imagination). The Egg Rolls were fresh, crispy, and not at all oily. I now stop roughly every other week. Service is fast, and most of the folks at the front desk have a good command of English. Variations from the printed menu are no problem -- for instance, my brother prefers Chicken Rice soup, which the Gung Ho does not normally offer, but they will make it up at no extra charge, even for semi-regulars like me. The price? Surprisingly, only pennies more than the place I usually went, but the food is noticeably superior. Gung Ho Chinese Restaurant is one rung better than one would expect to find in a small town like Colchester. I find it's worth the extra miles for the better quality, and the expense is not even a concern. read more

Do you like to freeze your butt off while waiting a long time for your food? Eat at Gung Ho! Went for dinner on All-You-Can-Eat sushi night. They sat us at a table that was FREEZING! I mean had-to-wear-a-winter-jacket-the-whole-time kinda cold. This would have been tolerable had the service been a step above a snail's pace. Now, I understand that on All-You-Can-Eat-Sushi night it can get a little busy. Add more staff next time. Also, please bring in an HVAC contractor. The Chinese tea is super yummy, the Pho is good, dumplings are awesome - can't go wrong. Only reason it's not a 5 star is the inside could use some renovations. Ordered the sweet and sour chicken and rice with no vegetables as well as the powdered doughnuts. They were absolutely horrible. Doughnuts were hard and the sugar fell right off and the rice was disgusting. I usually don't write reviews but for 18$ for two things I was extremely dissatisfied. I think Gung Ho is one of the better Chinese restaurants that I have been to. The service is nice and prompt. The menu is large and offers a plethora of dishes at fair prices. I have never had a bad experience here and the food is always tasty! Additionally when dining in, tables are given complementary noodle chips and hot tea which are delicious! Let's just say this review doesn't even deserve one star! After going to Gung Ho since I was a child, this restaurant will no longer have my family or my business ever again. Ever since Jimmy Pan the previous owner of Gung Ho sold this place, it has completely gone to shit. The past five times we have all ordered from here something has gone wrong. Yesterday we ordered four meals, the woman who rang us out went over each order number and stated everything was there and charged us for the four entrees. Well once again that was a lie. We got home and my mothers meal is missing. I called them and Maggie (The manager/Owner) stated that we could come pick up the rest of the order and she can give us a refund. I then stated absolutely not because I was not going to drive all the way back there to get an order that was supposed to be there already, I asked if it could be delivered, she stated oh no sorry we do don't deliver especially on a Friday because we're really busy. I then asked her what can you do for me as a customer?! Maggie stated that we would have to return all of the food for a full refund when she originally stated that she would give us a refund for the missing meal. I stated this is completely unfair the past several times I had spoken to her regarding missing items or the food not cooked properly, and even better my mother is allergic to Shrimp and the last take out from there, the order came with shrimp, during that phone call she just kept I'm sorry I'm sorry but were BUSY. Isn't the entire point of owning a business to stay busy? Well maybe you shouldn't have a restaurant if you're too busy to properly run it. I've been going here for years. The staff has always been very friendly, the food quite good, and the prices very reasonable. The fish at the sushi bar are the standard selection, but the sushi chefs are creative with what they have. The Chinese dishes taste good since they serve the popular Americanized recipes. Their menu has expanded to include other Asian cuisines. People dining with me have said they are good, though I've never tried them. I recommend this place highly. read more

I miss Gung Ho desperately. I was diagnosed with celiac disease a few months ago and am still unable to safely navigate a Chinese restaurant. But before I was diagnosed and had to go gluten-free, Gung Ho was a favorite treat. Service is great and the environment is nice. Everything is professionally presented and deliciously cooked, and the portions are generous. The fried rice is unique - I don't know for sure but I believe they either use brown rice instead of white or else different spices. At any rate it's divine. Gung Ho offers three different types of cuisine - Chinese, Japanese and Thai. I've had better Thai, and the sushi is decent. It's the Chinese that steals the show. My wife and I had lunch here over the weekend. We have been here a couple times before but not recently. Gung ho definitely matches the 4 star rating they have on yelp. The lunch prices are great. 6.95 for a whole meal! You start off with hot tea, (not my thing but it's free), fried noodles with a dipping sauce, choice of soup or Salad, then your entree with fried rice. I got the general tso chicken it was very good, however, it could have been a little more crispy. My wife got the boneless spare ribs which were also very good. I understand I can't expect amazing Chinatown quality Chinese food in small-town Eastern Connecticut. With that said, Gung Ho is disappointing no matter what way you slice it. My wife and I tried Gung Ho within our first week of moving to town. We had seen it from Main Street, and it looked festively decorated. We thought we lucked out, as it was Friday night and there wasn't a line in sight. That should have been our first warning. After waiting 20 minutes, we finally got a waitress to come over to our table. I had been very thirsty when walking in, but at that point the waitress arrived I had been eying the candle wax, as it vaguely resembled a beverage. After another 10 minutes, our beverages arrived, and we were set to order. I ordered wonton soup, chicken lo-mein, and sesame chicken. My wife ordered the same soup, but beef and broccoli. After 45 minutes of being inside the restaurant, our soup finally arrived. I'm not sure how wonton soup could taste acrid and burnt, but it did. Neither of us could choke down our soup. Again, this should have been a warning. Our entrees arrived five minutes after the soup. We were starving at this point, so we dove into our food. Remember that acrid burnt taste we mentioned? Well it returned. This time it coated every inch of our grease saturated lukewarm food. After attempting to slug down burnt tasting chicken down my gullet, I decided I had enough. Neither my wife nor I finished our food, and we asked for the check with 80% of our food still left on our plates. After an hour and ten minutes of being in the restaurant, we left hungry, lighter in our wallets, and feeling ill. Try Hung Won instead. They have much better service, food, and prices. We sat in a booth and had sipped a scorpion bowl (actually, it was called volcano acid)served in an extra-fabulous lava bowl with the requisite orange-maraschino cherry-umbrella decorating the edges.
