Stopped in for an early dinner. Seated right away. Typical of some restaurants, the atmosphere is darker. They have counter stools, tables and booths. We were sat in a booth. As I slid into the seat it felt a little rough. Noticed that the smooth cushion that's expected was actually well worn and cracked making it a little uncomfortable. I did notice some other booths were the same so they really should invest in renovating the seat cushions. S far as getting served and the food: service was very quick. Soup and salad came out right away. Appetizers were quick and the entrees were cooked and served quick. So that part was great. Salas had a little more dressing than I expected compared from similar places. But it was good, as was the soup. Surprised they served the soup with a metal utensil, normally the Asian places use a wooden spoon. The Ichiban roll was delicious. A little pricey for a roll though. We had the Hibachi combination dinners. One steak with shrimp and the other steak with scallops. Tasty dishes, but the scallops could have used s as touch more searing and seasoning. read more

Hands down one of my most favorite sushi spots in all of CT. The scorpion bowls are perfect for sharing. The sushi rolls are always fresh and made with the best ingredients. The staff are super friendly and always very attentive. Me and my east coast fam eat here every few months because we just love all their food so much. We've been to lunch and dinner here many times over the past dozen years and we've always had good food. Not today! Our lunches were awful! We had the won ton soup which tasted like a can of beef consommé with some hard tiny dumplings floating in it. The Szechuan chicken lunch was practically inedible. It was a mound of gooey onion and pepper slices in a glue-like sauce. The fried rice tasted like yesterday's leftovers and the spring roll had no flavor. The other dish we ordered was the sesame shrimp which did have nice sized shrimp and large pieces of broccoli. That seemed to be more flavorful. Usually we are so happy here. The food is delicious. However tonight we asked for gluten free chicken fried rice, a dish we have ordered for our son who has celiac disease before. My friends and I have been coming to Ichiban since they opened. Their general tsos and orange chicken are hands down the best we've had. The chicken is so crispy and drowned in sauce. We gave this place an enthusiastic review back in 2012. Now, in 2024, it shows its age, and not in a good way. The place looks worn, the tables have been scarred up (our table had someone's initials carved in it), the waitstaff is sullen, the seats are cracked and the springs are sprung and uncomfortable. The room needs a good cleaning, if not a complete overhaul. As for the food, I had an Ichiban specialty roll, which was adequate, but NO effort had been made to make the presentation attractive. It looked like it had just been thrown onto the plate. DH had sweet and sour chicken, which looked and tasted like bad Chinese takeout. What a shame. And will someone please fix the sunfilm on the windows at the entrance? It's so shabby. We won't be back. read more

First time here. Ordered a scorpion bowl, tasted like juice, couldn't taste alcohol. Order maki lunch special with tuna and salmon rolls and it comes with miso soup and salad. Sushi was alright. Miso soup was really good. Salad was a tiny little bowl of ice berg lettuce with a little dressing (which is usually what you get anyways from other Asian bistros) I also ordered a hot and sour soup, the flavor was good but the texture of the soup was like jelly, it was a lot different then every other hot and sour soup I have tried. As soon as you walk through the door the smell of the kitchen is incredible. It hits you in the face and makes you say "Ah, yes, this is why I'm eating out tonight." We had a fairly tall order for a small crowd of pork dumplings, shrimp shumai, miso soup, short ribs, speciality rolls, drinks, and sashimi. I honestly can't say a bad thing about any of them and I certainly sipped or stuck my fork in all of them :) Service was very fast and our waitress was busy, but made plenty of time for us. The pours of wine were perfect size and my hot sake was wonderful. The only reason for 4 stars vs 5 is I think the interior could use some updating, better lighting, and fix the locks on the bathroom doors that are a bit shifty. No negative food comments. Finding good sushi is often a hit or miss proposition, unless you live in/near NYC or LA where there are a plethora of fine sushi restaurants. That is why Ichiban stands out as a welcome addition to my personal favorites list. The other great thing- it's located only one town over from where I live- a definite plus when considering that, due to my rural location, I usually must drive 25+ miles to find a good restaurant to dine at! Ichiban is advertised as an Asian Bistro- they serve both Japanese and Chinese cuisine. Usually dual- ethnic restaurants struggle with the quality of their offerings, but not Ichiban. I have not tasted many of the Chinese offerings, but what I have tasted was fresh and delicious. But what sets Ichiban apart are their Japanese dishes, especially the sushi! The sushi is carefully and artfully prepared, and the ingredients are fresh. They have the standard selection of sushi and rolls, but also have a nice selection of specialty rolls. I'm not one for rolls that have too many ingredients, or those that are stuffed with heavy ingredients like tempura (which they do have several of). I prefer rolls where the raw fish is the star attraction- like their Tokyo Roll, which combined Tuna and avocado. Delicious! The tempura appetizer was excellent- crisp and crunchy shrimp with an assortment of vegetables. The decor and atmosphere, though not typical of a Japanese restaurant, tends more towards the modern side, but is clean and spacious- no crowding of tables. And the service was attentive and responsive. So, if you're hungry for good sushi in a nice, relaxing atmosphere, I highly recommend Ichiban Asian Bistro! read more

This used be be my go-to for Asian fusion but my last order was a dud. Pad Thai came with no green onions, no bean sprouts and no peanuts. My husband and I love eating here! The staff is super friendly and helpful with their menu. The wonton soup has such a delicious hint of ginger. My favorite dish is the Japanese basil chicken with brown steamed rice. My husband loves the general Tao's chicken and we both love their lomain which they make mine spicy! Mmmm!! At some point we will make it to some of the sushi choices which as the dishes go by look really good! The restrooms are clean as well. Sadly, if this is what Connecticut has to offer in the #1 Asian food, I'm sorry CT, but you are clearly mistaken. This was the first time in history I witness my other half (a man who takes pride in pretty much eating anything) actually return something - for taste reasons. We've done take out a week or so before this actually dine in experience. We tried their Green Curry ($10.95) & Kung Pao Chicken ($9.95). The curry is a lot thinner then I'm use to, and their chicken was cut in slivers rather then pieces. My guess is their Chinese food might be the way to go. ~Parking was available. ~We were seated immediately. ~Their menu seems to have Japanese, Chinese, Thai food, and about two or three Vietnamese options. ~ Looking around I noticed that everyone gets sushi...not sure I'm down to try that here. Tempura Veggie ($6.96) came with: 1 onion, 2 each of eggplant, sweet potato, and broccoli. The batter was a lot thicker then I expected it to be, as I prefer my tempura to be thin and crispy with less oil. They don't add daikon to their dipping sauce, so for me, it lack that extra flavor. Gekkeikan Plum Wine ($6.5): Pretty good. The Szechuan Eggplant, which comes with salad ($8.95). Was alright, and was the better choice of all the things I've eaten there. Chicken Pad Thai ($8.95) which was the item sent back. When it arrived it seem a lot lighter in color then we're use to, which had us questioning already. After 3 bites (two his and one mine), we came to the conclusion it had no "peanut sauce" taste what so ever, it lack flavor of any sort to be honest. Even the chicken was done poorly; extreamly soft and practically mushy. This is our third visit and we have had really great meals all three times. The decor is nice, the staff is professional and the food quality and presentation is very plesant. We've had the Hunan Beef, Cashew Chicken, Green Curry, Beef Hibachi, and sushi (try the 'never say never roll') and love the Gozya (pork dumpling) appetizer. Be prepared for a gigantic plate coming your way! Food is average amount. Half of the plate is decorations for fill up the space. Rainbow special sushi roll was disappointing. I expected it to be more extravagant with a wow factor. It looks a little sad. The spicy tuna was comparatively better. Sushi expectations are high given the sushi buffet restaurant places options these days. If the quality is better than sushi buffet them at that price point, it'd just be better to go to buffet and get the same things if not more. Service: friendly staff. Knowledgeable in their menu which is always appreciated. Complimentary salad came with our meal which I thought was a nice surprise. Surprised they didn't ask for dessert on a rare day when I was pondering about it. But since it wasn't asked, I thought oh well. Save some calories. Overall, everything was at expected but not exceeding my expectations on the food. I'd rather pay more and get a better quality meal. I think that either we had a bad night, or, they have cheapened out a bit on ingredients since my last visit. I got drunken noodle with veggies and it was greasy and bland. On the menu it is marked as spicy, and was recommended by the waitress when I asked for spicy. I had to use several TABLEspoons of siracha to eat it. Veggies were sparse considering they exist in place of chicken or beef at the same price. A TON OF ONIONs that weren't cooked enough to lose their onion bite and become palatable were in the dish. Onions are not veggies. Chicken drunken noodle was sad and brown with very little color or veg. My mates Pad Thai was even more watery than last time. Absolutely no color, just a pile of sugary noodles and she too had to load up on siracha. Meh. Maybe the cheap lunch special that I had before is the way to go here, not a dinner. read more

I would have liked to have had the hot sauces already at the table instead of having to ask for them. Went for sushi tonight. The server was friendly, the girl who took our drinks and refilled them was great. The only negative encounter we had was our waitress. She greeted us with a very rushed "what do you want" we ordered our sushi. We didn't receive the salad that comes every time and had to ask someone else for a refill. When our meal was ready She left the platter on the table without explaining what was what. (We ordered all new stuff) 20 minutes later without a word she dropped the check off and left. If this was a Saturday night, it would be more acceptable.. but it was a Thursday and only half the restaurant was full. Ichiban used to be the local darling of Colchester cuisine. I'm sad to say that is no longer the case. The tables and chairs are beat up, the menus look like they've been chewed on by a dog, and the service was downright bad. My wife and I stopped in for an impromptu lunch date today. We both ordered the Vietnamese Noodle Bowl; hers with shrimp, mine with chicken. What came out was probably the most bland and uninspired food I've ever seen at Ichiban: a ridiculous portion of rice noodles with 3 cucumber slices, 3 tomatoes, an oversized green lettuce leaf, a small handful of bean sprouts, and a tablespoon or so of the crushed peanuts used in Pad Thai. We requested chopsticks and some Sriracha sauce to spice things up and lend a little flavor. The waitress brought those to us 6 minutes later. Except she brought a very small (think sushi soy sauce bowl) amount of Sriracha. So we asked for the bottle, which took another 5 minutes to locate and bring to us. Long story short, it's sad to see a place that was once the toast of the town fall to these depths. I doubt I will return. read more

I used to eat here a lot based on how close I lived to the restaurant. I continue to eat here because it's just really good food. I have had lunch and dinner here both in the restaurant and as takeout and have never been disappointed. My favorite items are the ichiban sushi roll, Thai spring rolls, and General tsos chicken. I actually have a hard time deciding between these items because I enjoy them all so much. The spring rolls in particular are light and fresh and delicious, I would eat them every single day if I could. They also make really good mixed drinks here so if I'm solo I like to sit at the bar and have a drink and a few appetizers. Beef and shrimp hibachi is my favorite thing to order with some hibachi noodles ($2 extra). Hawaiian Dragon, Walnut Shrimp, Crab Rangoons, Vietnamese Egg Rolls, Dumplings, and Boneless Ribs are all must tries. Like any food, everything tastes the best fresh so eat it as soon as you can, especially fried items.
