Also when my friend orders NO CROUTONS on his salad please dont "Take off croutons" off a salad and serve it. He had CELIAC DISEASE and cannot consume any gluten. We walked in on a Wednesday night around 6:30 pm and it was PACKED with locals. For the restaurant business in a small town off season - this is a GREAT SIGN! We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table but it was a short wait. Gus seated us and he was very personable. Our waitress was great and she considered herself "still new" after working there 1-1/2 years...another good sign for the restaurant business. My premium roasted Prime Rib was AWESOME and truly cooked Medium Rare just like I wanted it. it was super tender and the sign of a High Quality steakhouse. Recently I came up to Sonora from San Jose to visit my family and we all wanted to go out for dinner and then check out Black Oak casino. My grandpa really likes this place and was saying we should come here. I was a little skeptical at first, are you sure you wanna go here grandpa?!?! ;) However I was pleasantly surprised, I really enjoyed my meal. We came for the early bird special $17.50 for two meals, great! You get your entree, choice of side, choice of salad or soup, and dessert. It was a great meal. I had the chicken parmigiana with some pasta as my side, and it was delicious. The service was excellent too! Gus, the owner, is very friendly! Some of my family has been living in Sonora for years and all the times I have been to Sonora I always saw this place and never gave it a try, I'm glad I did though cause it was great. If you are ever in Sonora come here during the early bird special! Or if you are here to come to Black Oak a little outside of town come to eat here instead much cheaper and better service! I'm not a native to Sonora; I was just visiting a good friend and we went out to dinner here to celebrate a birthday. They sincerely overcharge for their food. Pre-dinner salad consisted of a handful of the premade salad mixes you can buy at the grocery store. Ya know, the ones with the shaved carrots and pieces of red cabbage? Throw that on the plate half-assed and you've got your salad. I asked for the red wine vinaigrette and got a container of red wine vinegar and a container of olive oil. Yeah. I had to "make" my own. I had steak and what were supposed to be stuffed shrimp. I ordered medium rare, I got medium well, and the shrimp were awful. I don't even know what was in them, but I do know there was a solid quarter inch of batter surrounding them in all of their deep-fried glory. The explanation on the menu did a poor job of actually telling you what you were getting. I paid $25 (just for the entree) for food I basically gave away to anyone else willing to eat it. A friend got a margarita. I tried it. Either I have a heavy pour, or someone forgot to actually add booze. The complimentary bread and cheese fondue was actually good. Just go there and eat that. Nothing else appears to be worth the money. Also, the owner of the joint didn't actually help out his waitstaff, but he sure did like barking orders at them incessantly. Way to cater to good ambiance, buddy. Their wine menu made me want to weep. I'm sorry, but if Sutter Home made it anywhere on your wine list, it's time to rethink your life choices as a restaurant owner. Go somewhere else, guys. You can do better. read more

We were all craving steak so the concierge recommeneded this place to us. We went here for Valentines night dinner and looks like the whole city had the same idea. The waiting aread was PACKED! We put our name on the waiting list and asked Gus how long it would be. He quoted us 45 mins. Well guess what? We waited 90 mins. While waiting, we looked at the menu to see what we wanted to order. They offer complimentary cheese fondue with each entree! How exciting! The walls were covered with awards and most of them was for "best steak". We finally got a table and they brought out the complimentary cheese fondue. The bread was very good. It came with smooth whipped butter. The cheese....not so much. It didn't taste like cheese and it was watery. I asked the waiter what kind of cheese was it. He said "It's actually a mixture of cheeses and beer". Ahhh....that's where they went wrong. Instead of using beer they should have used wine. Well that's my opinion. Huge disappointment with the cheese fondue. I ordered the veal. It was ok. I got the garlic butter pasta. It was quite oily but it had lots of garlic taste. Yum! My gf ordered the steak and I've got to say it was GOOD! They don't take reservations so make sure you get there early and be prepared to wait awhile. I did see Gus go around to each table chatting with them. He didn't come to our table though. Outstanding value. We came up from Modesto to visit Pinecrest for the snow. Stop for the first time and we ordered from the "early bird special" Tuesday-Saturday 3:00 pm till 7:00. What great portion of food for the price. My Tri-tip was perfect just as i order it. You get soup or salad, baked potato or fries and a desert for 21.95. That is the TOTAL FOR TWO PEOPLE! You cannot ear for two at a fast food joint for that price. My only regret was they have been in business for 38 years and this is first time we found out about it. We will be back! read more

5 stars? Yes, 5 stars! Gus's is another down-to-earth serves-you-fondue-instead-of-butter local joint, but on top of it all they have AMAZING early bird specials. Until at least 6pm, probably 7, they have an "early bird menu" with at least 20 choices on it (like chicken parmesean and even veal). The deal with this is for 17.50 you get TWO meals and those meals include: fondue---of course, starter (soup or salad), the meal, and dessert! So you could go here on a date and spend less than 20 bucks! The food is also really great, and HUGE servings. I actually got Fettuccine Alfredo, which wasn't on the special menu (my parent's were less-than-thrilled about that), and was really good but soooo big---I ate its leftovers for 2 more meals, they also gave me like 6 pieces of garlic bread. So even if you're spending regular price on meals you're still getting a deal (if you dig eatting leftovers). Also, this is a steak house so you should probably try some red meat here, I'm not much of a fan of it so I never have but I've heard it is a must. read more

I think the decor has been the same since the doors opened, but other than that it's a great place. I see all of these reviews saying how nasty the early bird special is, and no, it's not the best food I've ever had, but what do you want for TWO dinners for 20 bucks?? Quit being so cheap and order off the regular menu, and you might like the place a bit more. And I just so happen to love the fondue. My husband and I go there all the time just to order that. I had an entire day to drive around and find a place to eat. I really wanted a steak and was getting bored with the local fare. Driving up the Golden Chain Highway, I hit a watering hole or two to get the lowdown on some local grubberies. A name that kept coming up was Gus's in Sonora. So, with a full tank of gas and an empty stomach,my dogs and I departed for Sonora. Arriving at Gus's, it was a little sketchy. The parking lot is within feet of a MAJOR thoroughfare. Just be mindful when backing out. I got there early enough to get the dinner special. Two dinners for twenty some odd dollars. Now I could of probably eaten both but, well, beach body(not). I was seated promptly and my order taken in a timely manner. My server brought A very warm bread basket and a fondue plate that was warmed over a candle. Although it tasted like velveeta, I thought it was a unique thing. I ordered a chicken and a Tri-tip dinner as it was gonna be a long drive home. I asked for the chicken to go. Tri-tip was cooked by the slice. Which isn't bad seeing the turn around they have. I ate well and was made to feel UN-rushed. Great first time experience. read more

Amazing steakhouse! We were in Sonora over Valentine's Day and wanted to eat at a great steakhouse, we found it at Gus' Steakhouse! Since it was Valentine's Day we did have to wait a bit (they don't do reservations, 1st come 1st serve) it was SOOO worth the wait! They had Valentine's Day deals, we went with the Steak and Lobster for two. The lobster tails were HUGE, accompanied with a huge steak. All cooked perfectly! Before this came out we started with salads and the BEST sourdough bread I've had in a long time. They bring the bread out fresh and hot! With fondue for dipping or butter if you prefer the old fashioned way! Everything was delicious and we left stuffed full! Definitely will be coming back next time we are in town! read more

More than just steak! I'm so glad we were able to eat here on our adventure. The menu is quite extensive (though don't ask me about fish--I don't eat them). Yes, they start you out on cheese fondue & bread--probably the hottest bread I've ever had at a restaurant! Our waitress was new & wasn't familiar with cocktails, so a bit of confusion there on what a "campari & soda" was. No big. The food came as requested & it was cooked properly. Do have the roasted red potatoes! Not that potatoes are ever "not" good, but these were like home fries with a bit less seasoning. The early bird menu includes dessert: ice cream or sherbet or peach bread pudding. My wife had the bread pudding, of which she is a connoisseur. She was a bit unimpressed. It was probably just fine. I had the 3-color sherbet, which was delicious. We hope to return on this trip. If not, we will certainly do so next time. Oh. Do check their hours to make sure they're open. read more

I loved the cheese fondu. I was almost full when my meal came, but of course I ate it anyways. The service was fast and friendly. I got the lemon chicken. It was very good. The chicken parmesan was also very popular at our table. The salad that came with the meal was pretty weak, but the soup was good. And the meal came with a dessert so that's always a bonus. Went to this steakhouse on 7/10/09. They have an early bird special that is AWESOME!!! Two dinners for $19.99 - we ate dinner and had non-alcoholic drinks for under $25.00! This is an older establishment with a restaurant and bar. They have the high back booths and oak furniture and it's all typical of a standard steakhouse - probably what Hungry Hunter modeled themselves after. The guy that met us and seated us was most likely Gus - he knew everyone and was chatting constantly with (probably) locals. They start by serving your warm bread with a fondue dip (guess I like melted Velveeta!) and butter. The early bird dinner includes soup or salad and your entree. There's a choice of about 15 or so items that include beef, chicken, liver/onions, pork, veal and fish. I had the steak and my husband had veal. They were both good entrees. The portions are a bit smaller - probably because it's the early bird special but still - what a deal. My only problem was trying to get out of the parking lot since it's on a busy street - next time I'll park in back. read more

We dropped in on New Year's Eve, and were quickly greeted by Gus and Dino. We received fondue and bread right away, the food was excellent and they even allowed us to upgrade our meat choice for the new years special menu. During the course of our meal both Gus and Dino dropped by the make sure everything was tasting good and cooked to our liking. Perfectly cook filet mignons and seafood we're a treat! Awesome dinner tonight! We arrived at just after 3pm when they opened. We were greeted and promptly sat. Of course there is only outside seating right now so it was a little warm, but still a nice evening. We started with drinks and bread that comes with warm cheese and amazing whipped butter. We decided to do the early bird 2 meals for $26. Amazing! Basic salad, but still good. Try their italian dressing! It was so good you can dip the bread into it. Our dinners wereTri tip, fresh veggies and I had the pasta. Very yummy. Just the right portions with a little bit of ice cream to finish it off. The food was pretty decent. The only reason I give it 2 stars instead of 4 or 5 is because the waitress seemed to be annoyed at me for no reason. When she first came to our table (it was my friend and I), she spoke only to my friend and asked her what she wanted to drink then she just left as if I wasn't sitting right there. I let that slide despite how rude it was, but then out of the 7 or so times she came to our table, she only looked my way and asked me what she asked my friend twice. Once to ask what I was ordering (this was after she had already initially asked my friend what she wanted to drink) and another time to ask if I needed a water re-fill (my cup was basically full). Every time she spoke to me, she had this annoyed look on her face. I don't know if she was having a bad day or what, but I felt very disrespected as a customer. I still left a small tip, but I would have appreciated it if she didn't act like I was a nuisance for seemingly no real reason. Would I recommend it for others? Yes, although she treated me poorly, she seemed to treat other people similarly which means that she may have just been having a bad day. Not to mention the food was decent enough. Servings were good for a reduced price menu item. Would I still go back? No, I wouldn't go back because one instance of horrible service is enough for me. The best place! Great Steaks and seafood. My son said this is the best steak he's ever had and we have traveled a lot. The fondue is superb. I'm low carb and I order a side of veggies to dip in the fondue instead of the amazing mouthwatering French bread they offer. You also have the choice of extra veggies instead of potato/ pasta. They had really good fish and chips, but I came in with my parents and it seemed they served actual frozen fish pieces. Like, the kind you get in a box from the grocery store. Maybe they ran out. Either way, not very good. The steaks are nice, but are smothered in garlic, so beware if you aren't fond of it. Went here on 3/26/19. AWESOME!!!!! Were seated quickly, and table was great. Waitress came quick and took our drink orders, while we looked at the large menu choices. What caught our eye? Over 40 entrees, that are $22.95 for two entrees! No typo. Salad or Soup, vegetable, potato or pasta with dessert. This is for two people, each gets all that. We had a drink and wine, total bill $60.00 with an appetizer, 2 drinks and wine. We spent almost $20.00 at Burger King for lunch. Food was excellent, came hot and tasty. We will return!!! The last time I was at Gus's was about four years ago and I was disappointed with the noise level. The way the restaurant is laid out, you can hardly hear your dining companion without shouting at each other. The huge booths are a big waste of space and is reminiscent of the 1970's. It is in serious need of a makeover. This time we went on a Wednesday evening when there was no crowd. Again, very big disappointment. The fondue was blah, the bread was hard as a rock, the prime rib was bland and tough. Their steak knives are horrible little wimpy things, along with their "flatware" which is like cafeteria utensils. Did I mention the prime rib was blah and tough? I ordered a glass of Chardonnay. When I asked for a second glass the waitress brought me a plastic bottle, unscrewed it and poured it into my glass. She should have at least poured it at the bar and brought me a fresh glass. I really like this place. The food is great and reasonably priced..they have a 2 for $25 dinner that is really filling and there are tons of yummy options to choose from. I also really like that you can have a drink at the bar while you wait for a table. Only complaint is that they don't take reservations and they are very popular so you can expect to wait 15-30 minutes for a table. Again, you can get a drink while you wait so that's nice.
