We arrived for a Sunday around 6 PM dinner and were seated immediately. We opted for indoor dining, but outdoor patio dining is now available. Dining area was at 2/3 capacity. The upbeat festive music is quite loud and made it difficult to hear our server. She seemed a bit frustrated with us when we had to request she repeat herself. We also felt rushed during our visit -- halfway through the appetizer course when our entrees were dropped off and then asked midway through entree course if we wanted dessert and To Go boxes. Our entire visit was less than 45 minutes. We started with a combination appetizer, which was a nice variety of items. Entree selections were crab chimichanga dinner, three piggies fajita dinner, and a combination meal. All 3 of us were complimentary of the food. Food is delicious, seasoned well, and piping hot. Menu is extensive with lovely presentation. Restaurant is lovely, modern, and comfortable seating. Property has ample free parking and easy accessibility. Service is efficient and extremely fast. Paid with a gift card and credit card, but realized later when checking receipt the GC was not credited. Ah well, my fault for not checking at the time during processing, but sharing to say to request 2-step process with gift credit to be applied first and then to pay the revised balance due. Will likely return for the phenomenal lunch deals when in the area -- ample selection and terrific value. Great takeout option for quick delicious meals. Overall, friendly staff working as a team to assist table side. read more

My husband and I recently went here for dinner. It was great. I ordered a happy hour margarita. Very tasty. For dinner I ordered the fish tacos which came with a side of rice. It was all very good. I especially liked the sauce that came on with the rice. The setting was very festive with a buzz throughout the restaurant as they were very busy. Even though they were busy, they did a great job getting the food out to all the tables. Our's didn't take long at all. Our waiter checked on us multiple times. We will be back. read more

This review is for the newer Gustavo's in Prospect. This location has been open for a little over a year and it's absolutely beautiful! Gustavo has created a romantic and upscale environment for his diners. So 5 stars for the vibe. And the excellent service. Drinks are ordered and served quickly, and our food came out exceptionally fast. And hot. But, alas, 3.5 stars for the food. It's good. But not exceptional. I think Gustavo's plays it too safe on the seasoning. Very little flavor in both my fajitas and my wife's combo quesadilla. "Bland" is the term that comes to mind. My combo fajitas came with the usual sides of lettuce, a smidge of guacamole, some pico, refried beans , sour cream, and 3 tortillas. The fajitas came with tiny little bits of chicken and beef. It was difficult to differentiate one from the other. I'd prefer "strips" of chicken and beef over "scraps". The peppers and onions weren't charred, but rather "glassy". Not the usual "sizzling" you expect from a cast iron skillet. The portions are reasonable, but pricing reflects the upscale ambiance. Step up the flavors and Gustavo's will be a first choice for Mexican food in Prospect. read more

We had a large group and they were able to accommodate on a Saturday night. The service was great. The food was great!! The atmosphere is very modern. There was a large birthday celebration & we never felt neglected. My nephew is autistic & was able to handle the noise level. We started with the queso fundido which was amazing! The pollo Playa, shrimp Mexicana, chimichanga, and tacos al pastor didn't disappoint. They have a huge liquor selection. I had the margarita flight which was not only beautuful but yummy!! There is a systemic problem with the service at Gustavo's. I've eaten at the Hurstbourne location twice, and this was my first visit to the Prospect location. As a note, the restaurant was not busy. Many empty tables around us. Normal Friday night crowd, but nothing excessive. At every visit, the service has been terrible. Same pattern of once seated, you wait 10 to 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge the table. Take initial drink orders, then wait another 10 to 15 minutes. Bring drinks and vanish. Come back 10 minutes later and take food orders. After another 10 to 15 minutes, the food runner starts bringing food, but doesn't serve the entire table. Last night, 3 of the 4 guests were brought their food while we waited for 10 more minutes for the 4th guest to get their food, as the others got cold. Zero emphasis on drink refills or ensuring the table has what is needed. Had to ask 3 times just for water refills. Won't be returning to any of Gustavo's locations. Louisville has too many options to have to settle for poor service with average food. read more

I love Gustavo's! I am from Texas & Mexican food is near & dear to my heart I tried the watermelon margarita ... it was refreshing & fresh (no artificial taste). My husband had the Old Fashioned & enjoyed it. We ordered guacamole & it was flavorful & bright. The chips & salsa were homemade... so good! Then we shared the Aloha fajitas which had steak, chicken, shrimp, & chorizo. It was all good... my only complaint was the pieces of steak & chicken were fairly small but the shrimp were big & tasty. The ambience was festive & the service was great! They were busy but attentive. One of my new favs that we will visit regularly. read more

On December 13, 2025, I had the pleasure of gathering with my beautiful sister-friends to exchange some holiday cheer. However, what started out as a wonderful occasion, sadly ended with us being racially profiled & rudely treated. In spite of the sub par, tepid food, along with less than stellar customer service, the group and I maintained our composure and professional candor to continue our planned celebration. However, after paying our individual bills and during the time to capture the moment with their hired photographer, the manager insulted us by saying we were too loud and needed to leave because customers were complaining. Now, albeit, there were 15 ladies in the group yet at that time, there were less people in the restaurant and our noise level was acceptable. The managers disposition and demeanor was off-putting and the manner for which she approached the organizer of the event was inappropriate, especially considering we spent about $600-700 patronizing the establishment. Needless to say, going forward, we won't spend our money with Gustavo's or any other business that doesn't respect who we are as individuals nor appreciate us as consumers. We're not recommending anyone else do so either. Black people's dollars count, too. read more

Went here for the first time tonight. Overall it was a pretty good experience minus two slight ways they could improve. Firstly, when you walk in here, you get exposed to what is a very sleek restaurant. I definitely did not feel like I had just walked into the average Mexican place like el nopal. The bar area was really cool. The whole place had a nice vibe going with it. They had a wide padio outdoor area since the weather was good today. For the food, I got the chicken chimichanga (comes with rice and refried beans). It is one of the better ones I've had in recent times at a Mexican place. Definitely better quality than if you went to your closest el nopal. The rice and beans were good. Now onto a couple things they could improve on. The service got off to a rough start. It took us a solid 10-15 minutes to get someone to take a drink order, so it seems they were a bit disorganized even though it wasn't that busy. Once we finally did get a server there were no issues. It was efficient and about run of the mill. Secondly, the portions could be a bit larger. Usually when you go to a Mexican place you would receive two chimichangas in a dinner portion. Here you only get one. The rice portion was also a bit lacking. Even though it was really good, I was expecting to get a bit more food. My partner got a more expensive dinner and probably had even less food than me. I thought about doing 3 stars but considering how good the food was I thought that would be a little harsh. I'd definitely give it another go. A few small tweaks and this would be 5 stars probably. read more

I really wanted to love Gustavo's. Since recently moving back to town, I have been searching for my new "go-to" restaurants. I have had several friends talk about Gustavo's and I have also seen them involved in a number of give-back events around town, which helped to pique my interest in them. After a long week, we decided to swing by for dinner on the patio. The weather was perfect for it and we were glad to be seated almost immediately. We weee greeted with some chips and salsa and put in our drink orders, as well as a kids meal for the munchkin. We perused the menu and I went with my standby for Mexican restaurants: taco salad. Drinks arrived, and they were smaller than I would have expected. I got a virgin margarita and it tasted like Gatorade. My husband got the leaded version and said it wasn't too good. I was really disappointed in my salad. It was the same price I paid at my old favorite spot but was easily half the size and chintzy on the good stuff like tomatoes, guacamole and shredded cheese. Service was prompt, the ambiance was nice. But I just couldn't get over the price for what we got (and even my virgin margarita was nearly the price of a regular, just $1 less). Overall, Gustavo's was not worth it. We both said we would rather go somewhere else then return. read more

We went to the new location on hurstborne lane. It's really nicely decorated. Their picante sauce is spicey but I liked it. I got the aloha fajitas. They were good. My dad's enchiladas were small and boring looking. I wasn't impressed by my wife's taco salad. My brother got the same meal as me. My mom liked her shrimp tacos. The table liked the flan but I didn't care for it. I would go back 1 day. read more

We had been longtime patrons. Moved away and came back to the new location. Salsa wasn't the same, basically tomato paste, and served with gross flour tortillas. The corn tacos that we have been getting for years were served with only one corn tortilla so they immediately fell apart and broke when first picking them up to eat. The service was slow and inattentive, and the liquor pours weren't the same. It's clear they have cut corners on the quality and quantity of food to pay for such a lovely space. The space may fool some into thinking it's good food, but for those of us that have eaten there for the past decade, it was sad to know we no longer had a close neighborhood bar and restaurant. read more

I wrote a 1 star review originally because my food came with toppings that were asked to be taken off, and it happens a lot when I eat delivery from here. But the owner responded immediately and wanted to help. Overall the food is great, but if you're picky or allergic to certain toppings just be extra clear about it. Amazing new location in Prospect on Hwy 42; it really has an upscale vibe. We went on a Tuesday about 7:30p and it was busy but we were still greeted quickly. Service was great. I ordered the Arroz con Pollo-loved it. Chicken was tender, was not overly cheesed like many places. My husband ordered the Enchiladas de Puerco and it was amazing and likely what I will order on our next visit. The only things that may be a negative are; not enough parking and It can be a bit noisy inside, but outdoor seating is very nice. We parked in overflow parking and there is a door to enter through the bar on that side, but the actual entrance is on the other side (north) of building where the paved parking is. I don't review places again often. But today merited another. I came on Sunday with my family as soon as it opened at 11. We were the first ones there and the place was clean and tidy. We were seated immediately and our waiter came by to get our drink order. As he asked us, another staff member came and gave us chips and salsa. We had two baskets of chips since there were 5 of us. My parents ordered the chicken and beef fajitas to share. It's a good portion for 2 people! My parents really love it here! My older sister got the al pastor tacos which came with beans (which had pork in it and tasted smoked) and pickled onions. She loved it! My other sister got beef and chicken taquitos. They were well-presented on the plate and looked tasty! She enjoyed them. I got tamales. So so good! Our food came fast! That's how it is here, which is awesome. That is something I can count on them to do consistently. Overall, great place! It's one of my favorite Mexican food options in town. Can't wait to return! read more

Gustavo's is such a great option when you're in the mood for Mexican! Before ordering my meal, I had chips with salsa and also ordered a side of queso. The salsa was super yummy, as was the queso! For dinner, I ordered the El Pollo Sabrosa, which is grilled chicken topped with bacon, Pablano peppers, and cheese sauce. It also came with a side of rice. This meal was so so good! I have been to every location and it never disappoints. Love Gustavo's any day of the week; although sometimes it's a bit hard to get in because they are incredibly busy, but once you're in...it's all worth it. My go-to entrees are always the Ceviche mixto (shrimp/fish), carne asada and the carnitas Chile Colorado. When it's nice and sunny out, I love sitting in their patio. Every patio has a nice relaxing vibe. Btw..their Micheladas are always on point. I can only drink one because they're hugeeeeeee. lol not that I'm complaining ;) Every time my boyfriend and I visit, they welcome us with open arms. Never have had a complaint with their hospitality. Always prompt, professional and very courteous. To those who'd like to give them a try, I definitely recommend. My wife and I were excited when we first arrived at this new location, but became quickly confused when we approached the building and found EDM music at eardrum blasting volumes. We checked in, but after 15 minutes of trying to hear each other talk we almost decided to go somewhere else. (Un)fortunately, we were told a table was available for us right as we were about to leave. We thought "oh well, we're here now, might as well stay". We sat down, music still blaring, and were eventually able to communicate with each other enough to decide that we would try a pitcher of margaritas. Our waiter took our order and after some time he brought us some chips & salsa along with possibly the weakest margaritas I have ever had at a restaurant. Not a great start, but hey, maybe the food will be good! After about 15 minutes of waiting for our waiter to return and another 20 minutes for our food to arrive, I received the chimichanga that I ordered. The chimichanga was good, but was made with a smaller than normal tortilla and was less food than I'd expect for the price. The beans were incredibly watery and spread across my plate to look more like a reasonable serving. Despite feeling like we were receiving a very cheap experience, the actual flavor of the food was good at least. We decided that we'd like a refill on our chips & salsa since our entrees weren't as filling. Evidently, however, you can't get a refill on the chips & salsa, or at least we never received a refill despite explicitly asking for more. After a while our server came by and grabbed our plates and we thought "Well, we'll just get out of here and have drink at home at least". Only problem was, that was the last we'd see of our server for the next 20 minutes before we could get our check. Within those 20 minutes that we had to wait, I did realize that I needed to hit the men's room. I stepped up to the urinal to find urine all over the floor and I had to all but brace myself against the wall to keep from slipping. Despite this, I'm thankful that I went to the men's restroom because at least I got to see the silliest wallpaper in any restaurant I have ever seen: Mr. Gustavo himself, photoshopped onto a horse, smiling big in front of a bunch of desert plants. I recommend skipping on Gustavo's and going to any one of the dozens of other competing Mexican restaurants that we will find ourselves frequenting instead. read more

Y'all, Gustavo is one of the most amazing, generous, lovely people that I have EVER MET in my life. I want to let you know on this Thankful Thursday how much he has done for not only our Prospect community but for the the Crestwood and the Lagrange communities as well. He supports so many student athletes, local musicians, Front'line workers, Emergency personnel, people that have experienced hard times/are experiencing hard times, etc... Seriously, I don't know how he does it but he has NEVER come from a point of scarcity. He just gives and gives. He runs specials, he gives portions of his proceeds to school teams.. AND he provides super yummy food for our community. I seriously love him and his family and I am so grateful that he is a business owner in our community. For Cinco de Mayo, my family ordered carry out. So did at least half of Prospect lol! They accidentally forgot to give us our large cheese dip (and they forgot give my hubby my margarita - but they didn't charge him for that anyway). The thing is, I KNOW they would make it right if I went up there and told them but I don't even care. Gus has given so much to this community that I don't give a crap about collecting that dip or the $7 I spent on it. I hope he pays his staff that by selling and distributing a large cheese dip to someone else. As a matter of fact, I think I will walk up there and hand him some money and ask him to send a meal or a few to some family that is struggling right now and needs it. How about YOU join me in doing this? He feeds people for free that are having a hard time. Who else do you know that has this kind of HEART FOR OTHERS??!!!
