Started with the crab dip- great flavor and texture, fresh scallions and shaved cheese which helped build up the crab flavor- even got extra bread for the dip since it was a good sized portion, Baby green salad- fresh, crisp lettuces, cucumbers and tomatoes in a vinaigrette Bacon wrapped pork loin was flavorful and tender on the inside while the bacon was crispy and cooked to perfection. The highlight was the squash - almost like a veggie lasagna. Char grilled cab ribeye- cookedto perfection (medium rare) with potatoes. Balsamic fingerling potatoes- while they had agreat taste and texture- little too sweet. Service: Speedy! Even on a full night after the Kentucky Derby, the service was wonderfully quick! The server gave us a few wonderful recommendations of the menu and we enjoyed all of them!! Food: Cornbread- unexpected. This was the free bread corse for the table but it was not expected. This didn't come out until after we ordered our meal. If we had known, we wouldn't have ordered such big meals. Crab & Artichoke dip- Delicious! The dig was luscious and came out piping hot! Definitely burnt my mouth because I was impatient Hawaiian Fish- Big portions! It is true when they say that everything is bigger in the south! The fish was light and free of the fishy scent. This restaurant used to be a favorite of ours -- the food was consistently delicious, and dining there was always an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, this visit was extremely disappointing. The menu lacked the variety it once had, and my steak was cooked incorrectly despite being ordered well done. What made the experience worse was the service. Our waitress disappeared for nearly 35 minutes, to the point that my brother-in-law went looking for her himself and still could not find her. Eventually, he had to locate a manager for assistance. When the issue with my steak was addressed, there seemed to be confusion over a very simple request, which only added to the frustration. Even more the waiters added a $41 4oz steak to my salad without informing us first. Overall, the quality of both the food and service has declined significantly from what we once loved about this place. It was a very disappointing experience. Anytime there is a floor to ceiling windows with a view of water, an instantly enjoyable ambiance is introduced. From the bar to the restaurant area, things feel open, spacious, and calming. I went seafood nosh with my order. The lobster bisque was good, but the fresh lobster meat was what made it worth the while. My huge platter of shrimp cocktails was the star -- fresh shrimp, and a good cocktail sauce with a small kick from horseradish. The fried green tomatoes salad was nice and crisp and slightly indulgent from the dressing, bacon, and cheese. The breading itself could use a bit more flavor or seasoning. We arrived at 4:45pm and were told that a "shift change" was happening, so we could wait in the lobby until they were ready. Ten minutes later, I asked how much longer it would be, and they said that the servers do a daily meeting for 20-30 minutes and they've "been in the meeting for 15 minutes, so they should be out soon". I go out to eat a lot and have never had this happen. The restaurant was nearly empty, with a couple tables seated and a line queueing after us. The host stand didn't ask us if we wanted to be seated inside or outside and, once ready, proceeded to walk us to the farthest end of the outdoor patio next to a large loud party. It was quite hot outside, and we passed plenty of unoccupied indoor tables on the way. We sat outside for ten minutes, and no one served us, so we walked back inside and asked for an indoor table. The booth they seated us at was dirty. They don't offer happy hour, which I think is odd. Our waiter, Cedric, turned things around for us. He was very detailed, so friendly, and super attentive. We ordered the V tower, which had a current market price of $235 plus tax, a side of fries, a strawberry whiskey sour, and the finished with figs old fashioned. The whiskey sour tasted like thick strawberry syrup with not a hint of liquor, so I got a glass of Napa Chardonnay instead. The wine came in a thick glass, which wasn't ideal. No mingonette sauce came with the oysters. While the king crab was tender and sweet and the jumbo shrimp were cooked and chilled to perfection, everything else on the platter was lacking. The lobster was overcooked and tough, the lump crab was flavorless, the mussels were bland, and the oysters only came with two types when we would have liked a little more variety with twelve oysters. I can't believe this place isn't talked about more, or maybe I'm just living under a rock. There seemed to be no bad seat in this restaurant, but the back (heated) patio with the view of the river can't be beat in my opinion. Perfect for special occasion or nice date night. Our server was lovely - she was attentive, friendly, super knowledgeable about the menu, and seemed able to read our minds whenever we needed something. The Kentucky Sunset cocktail is a must if you enjoy an amaretto sour. The complimentary cornbread was delicious and a nice surprise that we ended up taking home with us for a late night treat. But the absolute star of the show was the seafood platter - BLACKENED. We came in having been recommended this by multiple people and I'm so glad we listened. The grouper cheeks, scallops, and shrimp were all heavenly. The blackened seasoning blend is the perfect combination of smoke and heat. I wish we were served a bucket of the remoulade sauce. The coleslaw is genuinely some of the best I've ever had. We got the sweet potato peach cobbler for dessert and didn't care for it. It remained uneaten, but everything else was just SO good that I didn't even care. The River House is easily now one of the top places I've eaten in Louisville. Would definitely recommend a reservation. Very fairly priced for the quality served. Parking fills quickly, but there's an overflow lot a short distance away. read more

First timer. Birthday celebration, large party. Our staff for the night was Tony and Daniel an excellent large party team. But kudos to the whole staff, they run this place with efficiency. I really appreciate seeing senior staff roving and overseeing operations. The whole eclectic team is amazing. This restaurant is run with not on hope alone, but with the expectation that you will have a great dining experience. Top notch Michelin experience. Chef has his own personal garden to pick fresh items for that days use. Fresh fish and oyster bar. Some rare and delicious fish, Ivory King Salmon was my choice, fresh, well prepared. Everyone's plates were served at the same time, amazing kitchen. I peeked in and watched the magic of a well run staff. $0.02 IMO the best item of the night was the steaks. But I didn't try some interesting dishes, Grouper Cheeks or the Salmon Collar. Patio dinning looked romantic. A place worthy of your special occasion large party or small. Our family enjoys going out with one another and friends. Some places are honestly just plain snooty about your choice to dine at their establishment. Not here. I love a staff who can maintain an aura of excellence without asking. The grounds are peaceful. All is needed is coffee to go. :) read more

Was visiting Louisville and told this was one of the best seafood restaurants around. I must agree. The restaurant is big with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Still packed on a weeknight so I would recommend reservations. Outdoor seating beautiful and would highly recommend weather permitting. They just changed the menu so some appetizers weren't available anymore. I ordered the Ribeye Wontons but they had run out. We settled on a dozen raw Chesapeake Oysters - absolutely amazing. Our cocktails were a Smokey Old Fashioned and a Kentucky Sunset. Can't go wrong with either. Our entrees were the Divers Scallops best ever, and Grouper Cheeks with Shrimp over Chive Risotto and fresh vegetables. The Grouper was better than anything I've had in Florida. Waiter was attentive and helpful. Everyone looked happy working there. Outdoor views of the Ohio River were incredible with the Paddle Boat passing by. Will definitely return. read more

We had dinner here in a Friday night and I was really glad we had a reservation! When we walked in, there were a number of people waiting to be seated. We checked in with the hostess and were told we'd be seated shortly. While we stood there, there seemed to be one woman in charge and she would call out a name, the people would step forward and she would tell someone which table to take them to. There were at least four people just seating people! The place is huge with lots of seating, so it makes sense. We were seated and our server came over shortly. She was very friendly as well knowledgeable about the menu. We made our selections and placed our order. The timing between courses was good. I would say drinks from the bar could have come a little faster, but again, it was really busy that night. We enjoyed our drinks and our meal! I would recommend this restaurant to people. We're just visiting here, so the chances of us returning are very slim - but we'd go back if we ever return! read more

We went the day after Valentine's to avoid a Valentine's menu, but, sadly, the Valentine's menu extended through the weekend, so the menu was limited (no mussels or Key lime pie, for instance, and no okra with the salmon). Very happy with the crab arancini though--and the diver scallop add-on ($9). The sea bass was cooked mostly great though some was less flaky & a tad undercooked toward the denser center of the cut. Loved the purple potato & kale. At first we got seated in the annex room/private event space, but my husband was put off by the smell--happily, we were moved with no wait to the main dining area, which had much better ambiance (don't see why we weren't sat here initially, given it's clearly nicer seating). read more

One of my favorite places since coming to Louisville. It feels like coming home on a rainy, sunny, or celebratory day!! Not only is the food fresh with seafood flown in but the view is exquisite. My neice loves the burger and I tried it last time and now I know why she can't get past the burger. You get it, the food is phenomenal and unforgettable! Today i started with a mixed green salad with oysters added. I also had cocktail sauce tonite as a salad dressing which theirs is quite good. The oysters are just so fresh and the coating is so light but crunchy. Their cornbread comes in a cast iron skillet. It is sweet southern cornbread. Keeping it real, it's like eating cake. It is so good. I had the lobster bisque for the second course. The flavor was on point. I did keep thinking there should be just a little piece of fresh lobster with a side of lemon on top. But I'm extra sometimes. My main was the Hawaiian Ahi Tuna. It will always be one of my favorite dishes here. It comes in two sizes. The tomato chutney can't be described in words. It is not what it sounds like and tastes better than you can imagine. I got asparagus instead of book choy. It was so Smokey good. It also comes with polenta cakes. The garnish with the Tuna is so fresh that you can literally see the chef picking it from the garden while you are dining. I Looooove that! Check out my photos to see the chef picking. All meals come with their signature cornbread in a cast Iron skillet. I didn't like bourbon until I came to Louisville because you really have no choice. Bourbon is in everything. I took her recommendations for my drink, entree, and dessert and wasn't disappointed. To start, I ordered the Smoked Chicken & Corn Chowder soup, Jumbo shrimp cavatappi pasta and added 2 diver scallops but chef gave me 4 (all was grilled to perfection), skillet cornbread came with the meal (delicious), I had a Blackberry-cello to drink, and the white chocolate bread pudding for dessert. I am so sorry to post this review. River House was one of our favorite restaurants in Louisville. Had a reservation & got seated immediately. Server came up quickly. It was downhill from there. She was very nice but went on & on about the menu. We finally just cut her off. Had to remind her about one of the appetizers. Meal came in a timely manner but 3 of the 4 different meals weren't good. Overdone, no flavor, lukewarm, rubbery. We've not experienced this before. Our crab legs were okay. Not the best ever by far. Our server was helpful and pleasant. The other wait staff kept our shells cleared away. However I was sat in direct wind from the back porch. Every time the door was open I had to hold on to my hair and napkin. Not a pleasant spot to try to eat crab legs. The room was busy and very loud. So between the wind runny every minute, the loud noises and mediocre crab legs I really didn't enjoy my evening as I anticipated. Everything was just wonderful. Greeting by the wonderful staff at the door, that sat us at our table right away. Tyler, our server was wonders We started with Blackberry Lemon-Drop Martinis. Food ordered was Ribeye with fingerlings potato and okra ratatouille and Surf and Turf Pasta. Both were really good. I was not impressed with the okra ratatouille, I really didn't see any okra. We have been here several times and enjoyed the experience. Yes, it's a little pricey but the ambiance off set that. However, going for a holiday (Father's Day) was a significant disappointment. For starters, the prices were grossly inflated. For example, the pork tenderloin which is normally $28 was $42. From there, the prevailing answer seemed to be "no". I normally order the spare rib dinner. Can I get that? "No" My daughter has dietary issues. Can she order off the children's menu? "No" So she wound up getting only a side order of asparagus. I'm sure a child's meal would have been more expensive - and we wouldn't have had to get her something from another place later. Since I couldn't get spare ribs, I ordered seabass for $52. It and the accompaniments were all cold. It was a very disappointing experience to what should have been a nice time with family. So in the future, if someone says 'shall we go to River House?' my response will likely be "No" read more

Everything is fine, kind of punches up to be the jewel restaurant for special occasions, to impress a date or client or a splurge. We stopped for takeout lunch. Would have loved a sit down meal if we had the time. Many patrons were sitting out on the patio enjoying the view and the weather. Food was tasty! Would definitely get the salad again. Sweet potato fries were very fresh. The risotto was tasty but didn't have much lump crab meat. It was more just cheesy but good! The cornbread was very good. It had a crispy, sweet top to it and it tasted almost cake-like. Would definitely come back and try more things! The raw bar inside looked amazing. We got the oysters rockerfeller and we enjoyed them. Me and my son ordered the seafood platter which consist of grouper cheeks, seared scallops, shrimp, coke slaw, and i substituted the potatoes for grit cakes which i love. Went for 28th wedding anniversary. I got the tilefish which was presented well but was raw in the center. All they did was re-cook the fish and put it right back on the plate it came on with a somewhat surly message of "I hope this is better for you". Nothing was taken off the bill either.
