With the vibrant foodie community of the beaches and surrounding area, I'm always looking for another resturant so we tried Gusto last night. Gusto describes their food as "Fresh Italian Cuisine" but our experience was not consistent with that. We were both unhappy with our meal. My girlfriend is a fan of veal and ordered veal parmigiana. With her first bite she said it tasted like it was recently frozen and offered me a taste. It was not tender, soggy and a very far cry from fresh. I cook frequently and regularly prepare gnocchi at home that I purchase vaccum packed. I enjoy ordering it out because freshly made gnocchi is wonderful. I can honestly say each time I have cooked gnocchi at home it has been better than the dish I had last night. It was dense, heavy and way too chewy, not fresh by any stretch of the imagination. The unfortunate part is that the sauce that accompanied the gnocchi was great. It was light, briny and fresh with capers, kalamata olives and crushed tomatoes. I ate all of the sauce but only about 25% of the gnocchi. Our caprese appetizer was just meh. The tomatoe wasn't ripe enough to be tender or have any flavor at all. It was dressed with an olive oil without any essence of it's own and was accompanied by little to no seasoning or balsamic vinegar to brighten it up. We were both disappointed and have no plans to return. read more

THE BEST ITALIAN FOOD EXPERIENCE IN JACKSONVILLE! I have gone to the Gusto location in St. Augustine and loved it, so I was very happy when I saw there was one in Jax beach! I took my girlfriend for her birthday, and we loved the atmosphere, as soon as we walked in we were greeted by a smiling host and the executive chef, who looked like the coolest guy there! We were sat at a high top, immediately greeted and were talked through the drink menu by, I believe our server was James? Im not sure if that was his name but a great server, he didn't over serve us, checked on us when we needed, and always had good opinions on the dishes and desserts, he convinced me to get both the cheesecake AND the limoncello cake! The executive chef, what a guy, he was doing everything! As someone who worked as a server for 5 years, having a good leader is key, and it was clear he was that, no action was under him, he was wiping off and clearing tables, greeting guests, he was attentive, and even came by a couple times to check on my girlfriend and I, he was the star of the show, a super cool guy! So nice! The food was AMAZING! We waited MAYBE 15 minutes for our food, and even if we had to wait longer we didn't care because of our consistently full baskets of bread that we got to snack on (the bread and oil is a must, pay the $4 for it, its so good)! The pappardelle Alfredo was my favorite dish at the St. Augustine location, so I ordered it here as well, im a sucker for a good Alfredo, and this was a GREAT ALFREDO, I LOVED IT! My girlfriend got the manicotti, and it was gone from her plate in 10 minutes, she devoured it, she LOVED IT! The food was so good, we weren't sure if we were going to have room for dessert but we managed, my girlfriend got the limoncello, I got the classic cheesecake, and they were both incredible! The best limoncello cake I have ever had, and easily top 3 cheesecake ever! My girlfriend almost wanted another slice! The best birthday cake and it even had a candle for her birthday! We really did love this place until the recent changes in management and the kitchen. (We have read in a recent review that the former Chef is no longer there). Today was our first visit after these changes, and we are very disappointed. The bread was bland, not toasted, and not buttered. The tasty herb spices in olive oil previously served has been replaced by some gook that we could not recognize. The entree serving sizes have been greatly decreased, while the prices have gone up. The menu has been greatly downsized, with some favorite dishes removed. The tea neither looks nor tastes like tea. How can a place change so very much, almost overnight. Does management think that all of this will bring in new customers ? I think not, but time will tell. On a positive note, the host greeted us kindly at the door, and our waitress was great. We didn't have the heart to tell her that this place has suffered a serious decline. But we go out for good food, which we did not find today. So, you "intentionally" go from a five star to two star restaurant. Very sad. read more

Ordered the meatball (seriously the size of a baseball), a large calzone with no mushrooms or black olives and 3 salads (2 with no Anchovie). Salads come as ordered, which is cool as I'm really not feeling my son complaining about having to pick Anchovies off. Salads we're good, lettuce was crisp, nothing worse than limp lettuce. Son is pumped because the meatball is as advertised, it was so big, it had little meatball moons orbiting around it. We cut open the stromboli and find mushrooms and black olives. Call them up and let them know about the error and the lady who answered the phone immediately rembered taking my order and making the note on the ticket. Threw one in the oven right away. Food was delicious, customer service was on point...will definitely order/eat from there again. read more

Came in tonight was all over the place what I wanted, ordering an appetizer the NY imported sausage with rapini (aka broccoli rabe) and it was delicious - coming from ny ct area I was a happy camper. Tried their own chili house pepper oil and it was da bom but not for the faint of heart. Bread is awesome. Had a Caesar salad dressing made in house added blackened salmon was a good finish. I also adore their pizza crust, rustic o is my fav and the Best I have had in fl in this area to "my" liking. It's not your chain Italian restaurant so not comparable to that. read more

Amazing dinner! I had the Linguini con cozze which included fresh mussels on a bead of pasta. The dish was very appealing and tasty. I paired my entree with a glass of Moscato wine. But the evening was complete with a stellar performance from Akia, who often visits the restaurant and serenade guests with her incredible voice. Gusto popped up on our radar a while ago and while it took us a while to stop in and try it, I don't think I'll be rushing back anytime soon. For a late Friday night, we did expect them to be busy and they definitely were crowded. After a short wait, they were able to seat us, so we were off to a good start. The place looked completely different from the last time we had been there when it was a Mexican restaurant. I liked the facelift they gave it and was excited to try them out. While I always prefer a booth, this would probably the one time I wished we didn't get one. I don't know if the tables were too high or the seats were too low, but it was a very awkward position to be sitting. It was probably a combination of the both, but if they had booths that sat a little higher, it wouldn't be that bad. We got some cocktails and a pizza to share while we decided what else we may want to nosh on. My bourbon based cocktail was quite tasty & hit the spot. The Rustica pizza was packed full of flavor with prosciutto and arugula covering the well baked dough. So far they were off to a good start, but that's where we should have stopped. I ordered the eggplant parmesan, which to some may not seem like a complicated dish. But it's very easy for it to not be good. My plate arrived and there was a lot of cheese on top - which I didn't mind. However, that's all I tasted: cheese & marinara. For the entire plate. There were a few times I even questioned if there was any eggplant in the dish at all. Service was decent. Some might see it as slow, but I liked the pace of it. And if we happen to be in the area and in the mood for pizza, we know that's a reliable bet. But with other places at the beach - and one right across the street from my neighborhood - I don't think I'll be heading back to Gusto any time soon. read more

Each delicate flavor complimented the next . The Bruschetta fabulous for me ! It got very quiet when the main entrees appeared! Each one a visual buffet for your eyes. The looks on my companions faces told the story ! We came for a gourmet experience and Gusto's did not disappoint! From Chicken Marsala ,Calzones ,Spaghetti and Meatball to the Eggplant Parmesan. From the first perfect bite to the point where you know you have fallen head over heels in love ! Oh Gusto's where have you been all my life? When he brought our drinks he said he just spoke with the chef to make recommendations. I'm vegan so it can sometimes be a little issue to find out what can be modified on the menu. All of our service issues aside, which were many, but anticipated that with opening just this week, the food was hugely disappointing. Atmosphere is generally nice. However, this space had most recently been a bar and the back booths which were recycled from that time - need to be replaced as you sink way down into them. Also you want to sit in front room because this space is relatively uninviting. We had the antipasto misty to start - actually very good. Unfortunately all 4 entrees were not - Veal Gusto, Lasagna Romano, Lasagna Primavera, and meat sauce Tortellini. Veal - was not chewy, sauce and pasta with it runny and not very flavorful. Tortellini sauce looked congealed. Other 2 dishes unremarkable at best. Wine list in online menu not available - instead mostly American, not Italian wines. Music was good. Service issues started when we arrived. We checked in, and as there were 4 of us and only 2 there we waited in the bar. Apparently somehow they still had us not there when the rest of our party arrived. The bartender, when asked for a wine list, said they didn't have one - even though there was one on our table when we were seated. Wines offered also just okay. Waiter - it was his very first night ever. Food incredibly slow. When entrees did arrive, only 3 of 4. Last one had to then go back - lasagna primavera - bc of cold center. Bread and drinks also incredibly slow. All of which one can overlook if the food is worth it and write it off to start up - but it just is not. We reserved a table on Friday night for 5. We order food and drink and noticed a sign on the table that if you don't order an entrée you are charged a 25.00 service fee per person. Later in the night some unplanned acquaintances showed up and temporary sat at our table after they bought drinks at the bar. Without warning a 20 percent gratuity was tacked on to our bill. The owner refused to come over and explain why this was so. We went to speak with him and he was a total jerk to us and and told the waitresses not to serve us. My opinion, don't go to to this restaurant were the owner doesn't appreciate his customers. There are better Italian restaurants in the area. read more

Have had to come to Jacksonville multiple times the last few weeks to help my mom sell her house. I found Gusto online and twice have ordered take out . Both times the food was outstanding and restaurant staff super friendly. We've ordered the eggplant parm twice along with a few other meals . Everyone in our family has commented on how delicious the food was. You also get a nice salad with each meal. Wish my mom wasn't moving . Cute decor inside - very traditional Italian flare. The only thing I would change is the bread - not traditional soft Italian bread but more slices of French baguette but other than that would make this a regular stop. read more

We went for an early dinner on February 18th, The Waiter was friendly and attentive, but the food was a disaster. The bruschetta tasted like it had been in the refrigerator too long. The salad was made way in advance and refrigerated: limp lettuce and a stale taste. My spouse ordered a pizza that was burned on the bottom and cold on top with a soggy, doughy crust. But the final insult: after the pizza arrived, I waited for my order for about ten minutes before the waiter came to tell me the computer lost it. It would be another ten minutes before the cook could produce it. I said forget it, and we left after paying for the wine, the bruschetta, and the salad. The pleasant and apologetic waiter took the limp pizza and my non-appearing main off the bill. We won't be returning. read more

We came for our 15th anniversary. We didn't expect live music, but it was a nice touch. Our waiter was attentive and the food was delicious. I can highly recommend the Rib Eye with mushrooms and wine sauce. My husband had creamy Chicken Marsala --his favorite dish. read more

We made reservations since it was a Friday night and there is live music. The reservation process was extremely easy and someone from Gusto followed up with me via phone the day of my reservation. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a lovely hostess who was very friendly. Our server was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. He made sure there was accuracy in every order he took for us, from drinks to entrees. The food came out with limited wait time and every dish was delectable! Each dish was delightfully garnished and cooked to the right temperature. I was pleased to enjoy a restaurant experience that enabled a perfectly healthy customer the option of not wearing a mask and encouraged that the staff was also not required. Our Governor had lifted the "mandate" in beginning of the year and our Mayor just followed suit. Overall, this restaurant has gained much respect for their quality of service, entrees, atmosphere and basic common sense. Thank you Gusto!!! read more

Inconsistent best describes this restaurant. Excellent NY style pizza, 2/3 of the time. That's the problem, they have the ability to serve excellent food, but they are not consistent. 1 out of 3 meals is terrible, not simply not great but actually awful. I'm going to go with a solid MEH on this place. The good: they were able to accommodate a large party of us (12) very quickly and we were able to make reservations that day online. They called to confirm also which I appreciated. They bring warm bread and butter to the table which tasted great. The ambience is nice and cozy and not too loud so it makes for a great place for conversation. The food was pretty good. I got a small house salad with their dressing and it was good. I also got the salmon dish with spinach and shrimp which also was very good. Others at our table did not have the same experience with their dishes but mine was great. The bad: the service was so slow! Completely unacceptable honestly. It took almost 45 min just for everyone to get a drink. It seemed like the waitress was inexperienced but with a party our size they should have sent someone to help her. The food took another hour and a half. Needless to say it was almost a 3 hour dinner which is not what any of us expected. It actually kinda ruined our after dinner plans due to having to get back to babysitters, etc. The waitress was asked several times by an older woman (manager? Owner?) if she needed help when I felt it was pretty obvious that she did and she should've just jumped in. Maybe it will be different experience with a smaller group and I may try it again. But I was pretty under impressed and so was pretty much everyone in our party. read more

I really hate to write a rant review as I REALLY want to like this place, however, I do hope someone at this restaurant may read this and take some constructive feedback from it. We went tonight for dinner before a show. I neglected to make reservations and hoped for the best. This is the second time of the exact same experience--they seem very put out that you don't have a reservation despite the half-empty restaurant. Both times there were tables with "reserved" signs on them and both times, no one sat in any of the "reserved" tables in our immediate vicinity. So, maybe they should be a little more welcoming to walk-ins? So, we are finally sat but are not given menus. We waited, and waited, and waited. Finally someone came over with menus, water, etc. She said our server would be right with us. Again, more waiting. We went ahead and picked out some wine and when the server (same lady) came to take the order, disappeared to the bar and came back when she realized we had old menus (well the one picking the wine did). We got the right menu, made a selection and the server disappeared. Back again to let us know they don't have that wine. Finally she came back with a bottle in hand with a "how about this one" approach. Okeedoke. We start getting some food orders in--mussels were ok, almost 25% of ours were still closed (ie, shouldn't eat) but the red sauce was tasty/spicy. The caprese was just meh. We ordered entrees, as well, unfortunately I won't be able to review those. We arrived at 6:35 and by 7:50, no sign of food. We had an 8pm show to get to so we asked them to box the food and get our checks. And, unfortunately, the computers were down. No options of what to do given, just "we can't ring you up, our computers are down". Not sure if we were just supposed to hang out until they came back up? Thankfully they did come up in the 10 minutes it took for them to box and deliver our food. This is the 3rd time I've dined at Gusto--I plan to give it one more chance because I think we NEED a nice place like this at the beach. The atmosphere, live music, etc. are nice and I think the overall intention is good. The execution needs a lot of work, service standards need to be established and adhered to and the food just needs that little something more. Fingers crossed for the next visit. read more
