The GW Deli is all about one thing: bacon. The most generous bacon sandwich on the entire planet is made right on the GW campus. They use EIGHT slices of bacon to make this sandwich. They don't even do that in the Deep South where excess is a way of life! Aside from the downright liberal use of bacon, the GW Deli also sports fair, reasonable deals on different subs, sandwiches, pastas, and even empanadas. The prices are extraordinarily cheap; it is possible to get a sandwich and drink in Foggy Bottom for under $8 and the desination is the GW Deli. I LOOOOOOOOOVE the GW Deli. There are not enough good things to say about this place, but the first three that come to mind are: Bacon. Egg. Cheese. The bacon egg and cheese bagel (I'm sure you can also get it on toast - they'll custom make anything) is phenomenal. SO much bacon. As in - a half inch thick of bacon. You can actually feel your arteries clogging as you reach the halfway point. It's a warm, beautiful, cardiac arrest though. Oh - and if you prefer your cholesterol from sausage - try two large patties on your sausage egg and cheese. Or if you're feeling healthy(er, sorta) the Ham option is also yummy and large. The best part about the deli is its cheap. There aren't many places that accept the GWorld card (the card that GW students' dining money is on) and still manage to keep low prices. DJ's fastbreak next door (may it rest in peace) was the former crown holder, and now the Deli has one of the sole "affordable AND amazing" spots left. The huge bagel sandwich will set you back something like $3.85 - and it's worth every penny (it used to be even cheaper, but now it's more accurately priced) Other delicious bargains: The Steak sandwich - greeeeeeeeeasy and good. So good - get it with everything on it, INCLUDING the hot peppers. Yummm. Chicken breast club - their most expensive sandwich on the menu I think, $6.50. Worth it. Very filling, very delicious. Plus, when it gets very crowded around 11 and 12:10 (GW pre-class times) they sometimes have a tray of these sandwiches sitting out hot and premade that you can grab and go, and skip the ordering process. Awesome. And my personal favorite - The bacon double Cheesburger. That's right, you other DJ's fan's. I said the Bacon Cheeseburger. The cheeseburger that is not even on the menu. A couple years ago a friend of mine told me I had to try it, even though it wasn't on the menu. Apparently, this New Yorker knew the unwritten law of Delis everywhere: they will make whatever you ask for - you don't need to actually look at the menu. I followed through - and after about 15 minutes of mysterious waiting, I got THE most delicious off menu burger (also MONSTROUS. I'm a large eater and have trouble with one) ever. I want to say it was around 6.80 or 8.60, either way, HUGE amount of food for the price, and so delicious. I've done it a couple times, but I only like to do it if they're slow since it's not technically on the menu. Basically - the GW deli rocks. The guys that work there are very friendly and love to chat with the patrons. They also love stocking weird and random foods - I mentioned a new Gatorade flavor off hand and it was there in two weeks. If you like junk food - their selection is top notch. I stick to my ($1!) Andy Capp hot fries, but they sell classics like blackjack gum, lemon heads, and basically anything you can think of. Huge selection for such a small space. read more

Ah, the GW Deli. Its a classic stop for more than just the neighborhood college students. The range of items and quality of each is what makes this place hold up. The portions are very generous - a standard chicken salad sandwich is nearly bursting out of its packaging and a breakfast sandwich with bacon will leave you with little room for lunch. If they have it, I recommend the turkey salad sandwich (even better than the chicken salad). Throw in one of the over-loaded deviled eggs for good measure. You'll have about every kind of drink and chips option you could imagine - arranged delightfully on tall, metal shelving that you have to squeeze around during congested hours. Don't be afraid to try one of their specials either, usually displayed on a hand-written sign posted inside the deli case. The empanadas may be one of the few weak spots, but the constant additions of new fillings provide the potential improvement. The place is a small....mom and pop deli. I have been there during the breakfast rush and lunch rush. The line can and does go out the door but they get through the line rather fast. You will not have to wait long! As for the food....meh....well, it really depends on what you get. I have had the sausage, egg, and cheese on wheat. It was sooo salty that I had to throw it away! And I hate to waste food or money! But I just couldn't stomach it. On the other hand, I have had their steak and cheese for lunch and....waaaala! It was greasy, falling off the bun, oozing with cheese, etc.. Just the way that I like it! As for the service, don't expect service with a smile. The staff is not the warm and fuzzy type. Choose your bread type: bagels, rye, wheat, white, etc. and then get your melty goodness that is a fantastic hot meal on a cold day. The place is basically a convenience store with a kitchen in the back you can order sandwiches from. I ordered a BLT on a bagel with fried egg, avocado, siracha and it was delicious. $6 and filling. We went around noon on a weekday and there was a steady rush of "locals" coming in and grabbing their usual. Since it's like a grocery store, there aren't any seats. But we took our food over to the Starbucks a street away and enjoyed our sandwiches in the shade! read more

G-dub deli is addiction that I cannot beat (not that I want to). BLTs, veggie burgers, bacon egg and cheese on a bagel or just a regular sandwich, I've always left feeling extremely satisfied and oh so full. This place is dingy and not what I expected. It's like a small size 7-11 with a deli in the rear. But if you need to get food, it's difficult to find somehwere that will fill you up...for a few blocks, for a few bucks. If you have 15 minutes for a walk, avoid this place. I also got some hash browns and some meat and eggs that I was able to share. If you're used to eating healthy food, you'll have to try really hard to enjoy the food from here. Be selective when you order from their menu. The food tastes fairly good but it's just soaked in its own grease. When I was a fat, unhealthy senior in college, this was a viable option. I didn't go to GW, so I wasn't brainwashed into thinking that this food could be quality. GW Deli isn't that clean. The counters are overcrowded. It's a tight fit and if more than 2 people are in an aisle it's like sharing a shower to get past each other. HOWEVER, I know that there are other menu options I didn't try. I often want breakfast for lunch, and the Deli never lets me down. Classic deli shop in the midst of George Washington University's city campus. Solid food. I ordered a half-pound split of egg salad, chicken salad, and tuna salad with a carrot and a pickle. Kind of bizarre, but it was exactly what I was in the mood for after a long DC night... or should I say morning. Pretty good, but not the best I've had. What is really great about this place is that you can get a 64 oz. ice coffee to go (with soy!) Again, this is exactly what I needed given the night before. Instead of my usual sandwich order, I opted to try their knish (traditionally a Jewish snack food that is a layer of flaky dough enveloping a filling of mashed potato, perhaps with other things mixed in). Along with my Broccoli & Cheddar Knish ($3.25) I also ordered a 5oz side of Cole Slaw ($2.95). Both items were unimpressive. They have a good selection of cold salads here -- pasta, egg, potato, veggie, etc. -- but I'd stay away from the cole slaw unless you like yours very vinegar-y. Likewise, the knish was underwhelming -- particularly because the crust was not flaky and provided little contrast with the soft mashed potato filling inside. I would definitely stick with the sandwiches here (average price of $6?), which are flavorful and large for the price. I have one friend who adores the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich here. Ambiance: (2.5/5) GW Deli is a fast and cheap joint geared toward students in the area so it's not seeking to impress patrons in terms of looks, food presentation, or ambiance. The exterior is tired looking and you wouldn't look at it twice if you didn't know about the food finds within. The inside is a tiny, cluttered space with the front half devoted to endless (some foreign, some hard to find) varieties of juices, soft drinks, cookies, ice creams, candy, and other snack items. The deli section is toward the back of the shop and is just as cluttered with food specials written nearly over each other and with the salads fighting for space under the display counter. Location: (4/5) GW Deli is located in the Foggy Bottom area, and it is in the midst of GW's dorms and buildings. It's also a short walk from the Foggy Bottom metro stop. It's well-placed for students. Service: (3/5) The service here is usually decent. The service depends on who takes your order in the deli area; you may be happily served by a Asian man or brusquely served by a middle-aged woman. The speed of service greatly varies according to when you come. During breakfast or lunch times, the lines get really long (out the door even); you may have to wait up to 20 minutes to get your food. If you come a between meal times (eg, I went at 2:00pm today) there's usually a short 1-3 people line or no line at all; you'll likely get your food in less than 5 minutes. I believe they've changed their payment policy since some of the prior reviews; they now accept credit cards in addition to cash, GWCards, and debit cards (w/$1 fee). Overall: (3/5) GW Deli is definitely recommended for students or anyone who happens to be in the area around meal times during the week (they aren't open on the weekends). Sooooo good. Chances are when you walk in there will be a line to the door, but don't worry, it goes fast and it is worth the wait. I go here when I have to wake up early in the morning and treat myself to the sausage, egg and cheese on a bagel. Highly recommend it! The only downside is that they close the grill kind of early (usually by 6 or 7) so if you get a craving for it in the evening your are pretty much screwed. There's no seating here, in fact, it's really a convenience store with a big deli counter in the back. But you don't come here for ambiance and conversation. You come here to grab a cheap sandwich and go. Prices are reasonable, portions are generous, and people are friendly. The sandwiches are good, not great. Certainly not as good as A. Out of panic and my bestie telling me to hurry up, I ordered the Portobella Mozzarella hot subby special. "WHO WOULD ORDER A DUMB SANDWICH LIKE THAT, You can't eat any of mine". Well the DUMB portobella sandwich was amazing. it had thick pieces of mozzarella and drenched in balsamic vinagrette. After the first bite, everything made sense.
